My dear parishioners, One of the great tragedies of the pandemic was the loss of a loved one. So many people died during this time and to make it worse, so many loved ones could not be with the dying person in their last moments. Due to the lockdown and the churches being closed, we could not celebrate funeral Masses. This prevented people from having the opportunity to mourn and to give their loved one a proper farewell. During the lockdown, I was first going to the ceme-teries with families for the burials. One day, I did three in a row at St. John’s Cemetery. The problem was that some ceme-teries or crematories had different policies, about who was allowed to come, how many people, etc. One cemetery did not want me to get out of the car, but just to do the prayers from inside my car. Papavero Funeral Home and I agreed that we would do a prayer service in front of the church. They would drive from the funeral home, and pull up in front of the church. I would ring the funeral toll bells and come outside. Papavero would open the hearse and pull the coffin out a bit, the family would gather around (maintaining social distanc-ing) and then I would celebrate the burial rite, sprinkling the coffin with holy water and blessing the body. At the end, I apologized to the family that we could not have the funeral Mass but once the restrictions were lifted, they could come back for a memorial Mass. The first of the memorial Masses will be on Saturday, August 15 at 11 am for Charles Rawlins, a longtime member of the parish, who would be known to many of you, especially those who attend the 10 am Mass. You are welcome to come to attend this Mass along with his family. Since it is the Solemni-ty of the Assumption (but no obligation) the Mass will be the proper of the day. We have other ones coming up. If your family member died during the covid19 pan-demic and you could not have a funeral Mass, you may ar-range to have a memorial Mass. It is basically a funeral Mass without the body. If you have the cremains, it would be a fu-neral Mass, with the expectation that you would bury the cre-mains according to Catholic practices. Every baptized Catholic should have a Mass celebrated for them upon their death. If you want to schedule a memorial Mass for someone who could not get a funeral Mass, please call the rectory at 718-672-4848. Also, our Mass book for 2020 is now full for all Eng-lish Masses. If you want a Mass, you may pick one of the Spanish Masses (the Masses have the same spiritual benefit) or you can request an unannounced Mass. Unannounced Mass means a Mass will be said for the person but it will not be pub-lic. I have a priest friend in Rome and another in Washington D.C. who do not have public Masses, so they would offer these Masses when they can. Let us pray for all our beloved dead. Eternal Rest grant unto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. Mis queridos feligreses, Una de las grandes tragedias de la pandemia fue la pérdida de un ser querido. Mucha gente falleció durante este tiempo y para hacerlo peor, muchos seres queridos no pudie-ron estar con la persona moribunda en sus últimos momentos. Debido al encierro y las iglesias estando cerradas, no podíamos celebrar exequias. Esto le impidió a la gente la oportunidad de llorar y de dar a su ser querido su despedida apropiada . Durante el encierro, al principio iba al cementerio con las familias para el entierro. Un día, hice tres seguidos en el cementerio St. John. El problema fue que algunos cementerios o crematorios tenían diferentes pólizas acerca de a quién se le permitía venir, cuanta gente, etc. Un cementerio no quería que yo saliera del carro, sino solamente hacer las oraciones desde mi carro. La Casa Funeraria Papavero y yo nos pusimos de acuerdo que haría un servicio de oración frente a la iglesia. Ellos vendrían de la casa funeraria y se estacionarían frente a la iglesia. Yo haría sonar las campanas de exequias y saldría. Papavero abriría el coche fúnebre y sacarían el ataúd un poqui-to, la familia se reuniría alrededor (manteniendo el distancia-miento social) y después celebraría el rito del entierro, rocian-do el ataúd con agua bendita y bendiciendo el cuerpo. Al final, pedí disculpas a la familia por que no podíamos tener las exe-quias pero una vez que se levantaran las restricciones , podían regresar para una Misa conmemorativa. La primera Misa conmemorativa será el sábado 15 de agosto a las 11 am para Charles Rawlins, un miembro de la parroquia de mucho tiempo, quien seria muy conocido de ustedes, especialmente los que asisten a las Misa de 10 am. Ustedes son bienvenidos a asistir a la Misa junto con su fami-lia. Como es la Solemnidad de la Asunción (pero no es obliga-ción) la Misa será la propia del día. Tenemos otras próxima-mente. Si su miembro de familia falleció durante la pande-mia de covid19 y usted no pudo tener una Misa de exequias, ustedes pueden hacer los arreglos para tener una Misa conme-morativa. Es básicamente una Misa de exequias sin el cuerpo. Si usted tiene los restos cremados, será una Misa de exequias, con la expectativa de que usted enterrará los restos cremados de acuerdo a las prácticas católicas. Todo católico bautizado debe tener una Misa celebrada por ellos al morir. Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament

Our parish has had a long history of providing adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. One of the requirements to have ex-position is that we must have at least two people present in

order to adore and protect our Lord. We are having a hard time ensuring coverage, hence we have not been having it as regularly as we want. We need people to volunteer to at least one hour each week. Many of our regulars are nervous about

coming out and that is understandable. If you are willing to take an hour or more a week, please call the rectory at 718-672-4848 or email at bvmwoodside11377@aol.com to pro-vide your name, phone number and times you are available.

Adoradores del Santísimo Sacramento

Nuestra parroquia ha tenido una larga historia de proveer

There are Seven Sins that Lead to Excommunication

Excommunication from the Church has its roots in Scrip-ture (see Lv 18:29, Mt 18:15, 1 Cor 5:1-8). While various offenses can distance any individual from receiving Com-munion, the 1983 Code of Canon Law lists the following seven sins as reasons for automatic sentence of excommu-nication: 1. Hay Siete Pecados que Llevan a la Excomunicación

La excomunicación de la Iglesia Católica tiene sus raíces en las Escrituras (ver Lv18,29; Mt 15,15; 1 Cor 5,1-8).
