Although efforts to collect $675 million in donations for UNM began in 2006, the UNM Foundation has collected only about 60 percent of that money and has only two more years to reach the goal.

The “Changing Worlds” fundraising campaign is an eight-year project that ends in 2014. The money raised is held in the Consolidated Investment Fund (CIF).

The foundation collected $83.1 million in FY 2011, $75.1 million in FY 2010 and $90.1 million in FY 2009.

According to the 2010-2011 Annual Report on Giving, the fund spends between 4 and 6 percent of the total amount in the CIF each year, to ensure a steady amount of income for UNM to depend on in years to come. DAILY LOBOnew mexico

Director of Communications at the UNM Foundation Wendy Antonio said 50 percent of the total donated money in FY 2011 will be used to provide financial aid to students and about 27 percent of donations will support faculty. She said previous students who excelled at UNM, such as presidential scholarship recipients, often return to financially support and mentor current students to ensure more students can excel.

Antonio said some donors want to support a specific organization or department, so donors decide where their donations are award-ed. She said about $30 million of the money donated in FY 2010 was

designated to specific programs and organizations and the remain-ing total of about $45 million went to general funds.

“Many Lobo fans cheer on their teams, encourage student athletes and help create great facilities for sports through their gifts,” she said. “Others give in a planned way, using the proceeds of their estates to make gifts that are meaningful to them.”

According to the report, UNM alumna Sonnet McKinnon, who graduated from the Anderson School of Management in 1993, and her husband Ian donated $7.5 mil-lion in FY 2011. The donation was split $5 million to Anderson and

$2.5 million to Athletics. “We hope we’re able to play

a role in advancing outstanding educational opportunities for all New Mexicans, as well as for students from all over the world,” Sonnet said.

Antonio said the satisfaction of giving a gift and the impact dona-tions can have on a student’s life motivate donors to become lifelong contributors.

“Asking ‘whose world would you change?’ resonates with (donors) be-cause they experienced the way their world changed through a wonderful professor, a mentor, the knowledge or perspective they gained through their classes, or generally through the positive educational experience UNM gave them,” she said.

Antonio said the foundation collects donations that will be used in the distant future. She said the fluctuation in donation collections does not instantly affect the

University because the foundation’s annual budget depends on donations collected 10 years ago.

Antonio said departments probably won’t be affected by low donation rates in any single year because the foundation can make up the money lost during the period between when the money is collected and when it is disbursed. University programs would only be affected if giving continued to decrease over a long period of time.

“Donors are not on a timetable, so total contributions vary from year to year,” she said. “Overall, the needle is moving upward but we prepare for things to change from year to year.”

The softball team let a win slip away on Senior Day.

Head Coach Erica Beach said the loss was a letdown because the Lobos had a 6-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.

“It’s always disappointing, es-pecially when you get such a good lead,” Beach said. “We had a lot of good opportunities to get out of the game.”

The Lobos scored the first run of the game with a home run from se-nior right fielder Shenise Cox to give them a 1-0 advantage.

In the fourth inning, UNM added another run to make it 2-0. The game turned into a rout for a moment af-ter the Lobos scored four runs in the fifth to give them a 6-0 lead.

The Rebels scored four runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to two.

In the top of the seventh inning, UNLV tied the game at 6-6 when junior Lobo pitcher Kari Gutierrez gave up an RBI double from Rebel third baseman Jaexie Balilea.

The Lobos (27-22, 2-7) did not score in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. The Rebels took their first lead of the game when right fielder Stefany Valentino singled home second baseman Elena Fata to give the Rebels a 7-6 edge. The Lobos failed to score in their next at-bat to end the game with a loss.

Sophomore shortstop Chelsea Anaya, who went two-for-four at the plate, said the Lobos lost concentra-tion because they weren’t receiving some of the calls from the umpire.

“I think we got too carried away with not getting the calls we should have gotten, and we became a little unfocused,” Anaya said.

Starting pitcher Kaela DeBroeck did not allow a hit until the top of the fifth when Balilea hit a double down the right field line. DeBroeck pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowed four

runs on six hits and walked three batters.

Gutierrez threw two and one-third innings, gave up three runs on three hits and also walked three batters.

Editor’s Note: is letter is in reference to the column “Mothy mayhem means the end is nigh,” by Devon Stevens, published in the Daily Lobo Wednesday.

Editor, e column “Mothy mayhem means the

end is nigh” rightfully pokes fun at what is a most unfunny buildup of belief that the world really will come to an end this year. One such true believer I know used to be a levelheaded sta er at a drop-in center for the mentally ill. en he had a stroke and now every day he posts a little note outside his door announcing the number of days left until Dec. 22. Yes, they have it right down to the date. I assured him that a solar are — his version of events — could not possibly reach out and actually engulf and destroy Earth. But his countdown goes on. Wrapped in envelopes of superstition, the doomsday survivalists are holed up among us like ticking time bombs of potentially self-ful lling prophecy. ey forget it is one thing to be a self-proclaimed prophet and quite another to extrapolate into the future with hard statistics. But their kind hates the objective approach of science. ey were not smart enough in high school to understand science, and becoming scientist-mocking, scriptural literalists is their way to sublimate into a la-la-land above the plain-ol’ business need for coexistence, and look down on scientists with inferiority masquerading as superiority. How many Armageddon addicts are riding scientists’ backs with a paranoid whip? When it comes to driving science to come up with newer weaponry and arousing a grandiose awe by shocking yet another part of humanity, no problem. is irony is doubled in modern India, where adherents of Gandhi’s religion escalate global tensions toward the kind of rapture that can only come from the decisive glow of a nuclear winter, as witnessed by their recent launch of a long-range missile that can now plant an all-consuming mushroom cloud on sprawling Shanghai. So whether it is America or China or India today, or Iran tomorrow, a seesaw of power balances from competing, one-on-one hallucinations of the religious kind are propagating forced oscillations arcing across the planet. e initial perturbations were terrorists. Increasingly, these are reinforced with America supporting India against China with nuclear know-how, and China supporting

Iran to bypass American sanctions and make nukes, leading to a vicious cycle that can suck us all in. e maw of the resulting vortex is being fed by television, where even the History Channel makes a mockery of fact with shows predicting doom like it is really going to happen. However, college students have freely blossoming minds. To us, it is not some rapture ending the world in some white-hot ash that we must fear. It is the ossi ed minds of those suicidal and homicidal individuals, spread out like black holes over the world, who actually believe in this nonsense.

Editor’s Note: is letter is in response to the letter “UNMPD needs proactive approach to stop skaters” by Larry Compton, published in the Daily Lobo ursday.

Editor,Several days ago, the Lobo printed a letter

titled “UNMPD needs proactive approach to stop skaters.” is letter was in regard to the large number of skateboarders who frequent the UNM campus. While of course the author of the letter is entitled to his opinion on the matter, I found some of the language in his letter to be unfair. e author of the letter re-ferred to the skaters he had seen doing tricks at UNM as “sco aws” and “delinquents.” He also referred to the tricks he has seen them doing as “antics” and “jackass-type tricks.”

e author mentioned he had spoken to the skaters several times and had been called names and threatened with violence. If these events did happen — and I have no reason to believe they did not — then it is unfortu-nate he encountered a group of skaters who treated him as they did. However, for him to place all skateboarders into the same group as disrespectful, belligerent delinquents is rather unfair.

I do not skateboard, but I know plenty of people who do, and I can vouch that all of the skaters I know are polite, respectful individu-als who just want to skate in peace. With an activity as widespread as skateboarding, you are bound to have some people who re ect poorly on the group as a whole, but it is un-fortunate some people insist on judging an entire group based on the unfortunate ac-tions of a few.

Editor’s Note: This letter is in reference to the photo essay “Drinking for sport,” by Dylan Smith, published in the Daily Lobo May 4.

Editor,Looking through the photo edition, I

was pleased enough at what I saw until I got to the last page, where you had included beer pong as a “nontraditional sport.” This is ridiculous. Beer pong is so far from physically demanding that to call it a sport — while arguable — is just silly, especially when compared to the other sports presented. Volleyball, cricket, horseback riding, dancing, beer pong. Which one doesn’t belong in that list? Not to try and sully the reputation or the proud history of athleticism that beer pong represents, but I just wish you had given that space to an actual sport that is perhaps played by people on campus. There are folks who regularly play badminton in the gym, for instance. Or perhaps if I could toot my own horn, I might even suggest the UNM Fencing Club. Maybe it was meant to be funny or a lark, but promotion of drinking games seems a little out of step with an issue about “nontraditional sports.”

No, Athletics is costing the University too much money. In this economy, student fees should cover only expenses directly related to education.

Yes, even though it’s an increase, it’s a relatively small amount to pay for athletic programs compared to fees students pay at other universities.

Yes, athletic programs are an important part of the college experience should be funded by student fees.

LAST WEEK’S POLL RESULTS:

The Board of Regents approved a $50 increase in student fees on April 27 to fund Athletics. This amount will be added to the amount from student fees the Student Fee Review Board already allocated to Athletics. This means each student will pay $131.75 for Athletics as part of his or her student fees. Do you support this increase?

Perhaps some skaters show poor judgment in the areas they choose to skate in, but to call them delinquents is unduly harsh. I would think with the childhood obesity problem in America today that we would want to support an activity in which participants spend hours upon hours outside, engaging in a physically demanding activity while honing their skills both physically and mentally. The next time the author hears that “clack” sound, I would challenge him, instead of immediately getting angry, to stop and watch the tricks some of the skaters are doing and consider the amount of time and practice it takes to build the discipline and skill it takes to successfully land some of those tricks.

BOSTON — Chris Davis had a much better day as a designated pitcher than as a designated hitter.

In the first major league game since 1925 in which both teams put a position player on the mound, Davis overcame an awful day at the plate by pitching two scoreless innings and getting the win as the Baltimore Orioles outlasted Boston 9-6 Sunday in 17 innings.

Davis went 0 for 8 as the DH, striking out five times and ground-ing into a double play. Yet in a sea-son full of surprises for the Orioles, the first baseman by trade deliv-ered the biggest one yet in his pro pitching debut.

“I was like ‘Sweet! I get to try something different today — be-cause hitting ain’t working,’” Davis said. “Basically, that was my first thought.”

Adam Jones hit a three-run homer in the top of the 17th off Darnell McDonald, an outfielder the Red Sox turned to once their bullpen was empty.

Boston then got two runners on to start the 17th against Davis (1-0). With a fastball in the mid-80s mph, he struck out All-Star slugger Adrian Gonzalez and got McDonald to ground into a double play to end a game that took six hours, seven minutes.

The last time two teams brought

mlb

in position players to pitch in the same game was Oct. 4, 1925, when Hall of Famers Ty Cobb of Detroit and George Sisler of the St. Louis Browns closed out the second game of a doubleheader on the last day of the season, STATS LLC said.

The last time any position player wound up as the winning pitcher was May 25, 2011, when Philadelphia infielder Wilson Valdez threw one scoreless inning in a 19-inning victory over Cincinnati.

“I was just out there trying to throw strikes and not blow the game,” Davis said. “In a game like that when everybody’s battling, trying to get a win, both teams are throwing everything they got at each other. You don’t want to blow it.”

Baltimore and Boston each used eight pitchers before going to Davis and McDonald.

“Just when you think you’ve seen it all, some days you come out here and just assume the position. That was fun,” Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. “It was a long day, but you like to get something good out of it.”

Boston has lost five straight. McDonald had scored the tying run as a pinch runner in the eighth, and took the final swing against Davis.

“He had pretty good stuff. He had a lot of life on his balls — more than I expected,” McDonald said.

Though never completely boring, the Vortex Theatre’s production of “Speed-the-Plow” is a disappointment, failing to reach the dizzying heights of comedic potential in David Mamet’s outstanding script.

Mamet, one of the most treasured playwrights in the American theatrical repertoire, often writes complicated, male-dominated dramas, such as “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “American Buffalo” or “Oleanna.” But “Speed-the-Plow,” one of his most enduring plays, is a comedy devoted to portraying how Hollywood big-shots make movies against incredible odds.

“Speed-the-Plow” introduces two movie producers, Charlie Fox and his boss, Bobby Gould, who have climbed the ranks of their industry together. The play’s plot is simple. Gould falls for his temporary secretary, Karen, who convinces him to make a movie based on an unwieldy, philosophical book about radiation and decay. When Gould agrees, his old partner Fox reminds him their job isn’t

Complicated comedy fails due to poor casting

to make “good” movies — they must make movies that will turn a profit.

“Speed-the-Plow” isn’t a dra-ma designed to change lives or enlighten the audience. It is a viciously funny story of two un-repentant, charming narcissists who make movies.

Unfortunately, the two ac-tors who play Fox and Gould leave much to be desired. Marc Comstock as Gould never finds the confidence or authority that should be second nature to a Hollywood executive.

Though Fox is written as an instant-gratification fiend with a weakness for caffeine and cocaine, Aaron Worley makes the character seem strangely relaxed. Both Worley and Comstock struggle to own Mamet’s unique language, taking far too much time with it. Their dialogue drags when it needs to snap.

Fox and Gould are a theatrical double act, a pair of mischievous and amoral characters whose similarities and disparities de-fine each other. Unfortunately, the two actors lack the neces-sary energy or chemistry to make their scenes soar and “Speed-the-Plow” suffers for it.

Julia Harris, who plays Karen, lends her character an honest na-ïveté. However, Harris misses the opportunity to make Karen am-biguous and even mysterious. As written by Mamet, Karen is a fas-cinating woman, a character who knows exactly what she wants and is willing to manipulate oth-ers to get it. But Harris’ portray-al of Karen seems entirely inno-cent, even when the playwright suggests otherwise.

Though Hollywood has hardly changed its ways since Mamet first wrote “Speed-the-Plow,” director Harry Zimmerman decided on a distinctly period production and set the play in the ‘80s. This decision has somewhat mixed success. Gould’s half-painted office, the main setting, never feels genuine, but the costumes designed by Kathy Gomez are well chosen and help create the world of ‘80s Hollywood. The set itself is arranged in an awkward thrust, surrounded by an audience on three sides, that doesn’t seem to serve any purpose.

The Vortex’s “Speed-the-Plow” is ultimately a let-down. The lead performances simply aren’t good enough, and a play that should be an effortless joy to watch feels more like a chore.

Capricorn—Your mind has tak-en you to some exciting, ground-breaking places over the last few weeks. As a result, you’ve become more accepting of people who only appear to be different from you, because you’ve realized ev-eryone is essentially the same. Over the next couple of weeks, you’ll discover how to integrate this new understanding into your daily routines, perhaps eventually changing deep-seated beliefs and behavior patterns.Aquarius—Where establishing deep roots in relationships is con-cerned, you’ve made astound-ing progress over the last couple of weeks. You like to have a large network of loose connections, but the minute you feel your freedom being hampered by a relationship, your tendency is to run. There’s a special person waiting patiently for you to let them in. Give them a chance and you’ll likely be pleas-antly surprised.Pisces—Whether or not spring fe-ver exists, you’re certainly in the mood to frolic with anyone will-ing to play. You’ve got quite a se-lection at your feet; nothing to get egotistical about, but you feel sud-denly as if there are so many op-tions that you simply can’t restrict yourself. This may violate agree-ments you have with others, but as long as the damage is minor, it’s probably worth it to explore.Aries—A person or work oppor-tunity you’ve been pursuing will suddenly be within your grasp. Keep in mind this is all up to you and the only thing between you and what you want is any nega-tivity you allow to muddy your confidence. Take care not to bowl over everyone and everything in your way, but just know that if you work your charm without being too aggressive, you will certainly have your way.Taurus—You’ve recently come to

a point in your life in which you no longer feel like a stranger to yourself. Now, the world seems to be less intimidating and you feel capable of fully loving any person regardless of outward ap-pearances. You may be asking yourself how you’ll ever choose a mate when there isn’t anything to differentiate between them, but the point is that you don’t have to choose. You are free to enjoy all there is.Gemini—If you’ve ever been so hungry you don’t know what to eat, you’ll have a better under-standing of the problem arising in your social life. Your boundless energy and lust for experience has led you to make more arrange-ments and agreements than you can really keep up with. Try to find what really captures your interest beyond a fleeting experience and stick with that for a while.Cancer—If you’re experienc-ing anxiety seemingly out of no-where, you might examine your value system to see what’s hold-ing you back from enjoying life. Like breaking off a long-term re-lationship, a belief can ultimately be destructive or unproductive, though it’s still difficult to let go, because it’s become part of who you are. Let this be a chance for you to become someone free of negative restraint and be at peace with that choice.Leo—Pat yourself on the back for attempting to remedy a miscom-munication or conflict in your personal life. This suddenly be-came easy because you realized letting it fester was adversely af-fecting other areas of your life. You can expect that the damage will be undone, but make sure you consider the other person and not just say what you think they’re expecting so you can feel comfortable again. Virgo—A subtle sensation you’ve

been flirting with may become a serious possibility for you. Wheth-er or not what you envision be-comes real is entirely up to you. Any reluctance you feel may have something to do with fear of the unknown, as the reason this no-tion is tempting is because you want to experience it. Try not to feel guilty about what you’re wanting, or you’ll be stuck dream-ing about what could have been.Libra—An idea or ambition you’ve been fertilizing over the past couple weeks has ripened to your liking. Now that you’re ab-solutely certain of how you’ll go through with it, you may have to deal with creeping doubt. You are so excited at the prospect that the uncertainty of whether or not it’ll be what you have in mind is a lot to cope with. Relax and go with the flow. You’ve put enough thought into this; it’s practically already a reality.Scorpio—Preparation will be-come very important to you in the next couple of weeks. You feel something very important is about to happen, and though you may be dreading it, you should know whatever conflict arises is an op-portunity to grow. It’s time you re-covered your personal power and let people in your life know where you stand and that they can’t just walk all over you. You need to bal-ance your needs with others’.Sagittarius—It’s time to indulge in the material world. Making a habit of indulgence is not the goal. Rather, it’s time you understood the relationship between your body, mind and soul. Explore what makes you feel good and what doesn’t, experiment with sensations you’ve never consid-ered. In a few weeks, you’ll know what it is to live fully and be able to shed any bad habits that keep you from that life.
