Itrsquos the hottest seat in town but some ticket-hold-ing students stay homeStudentsrsquo menrsquos basketball tickets are sold out until the Dec 22 game against Citadel but the top stu-dent section rows have been emp-ty for every home game which has students questioning how UNM distributes free student ticketsldquoIt could be a lot betterrdquo student Erick Ford said ldquoUNM could save some tickets to give out on game day Students know it is sold out and they give up trying to go even though there are seats to be hadrdquoFor home games UNM distributes 1650 free student tickets on the north side of e Pit

UNM President David Schmid-ly has spent more time out of of- ce than any other president since at least the 1930s but University communication policy making and budget discussions have continued on main campus while Schmidly recuperates

Acting President Paul Roth said in a Nov 1 campus-wide e-mail he began a series of luncheons that al-low him to meet with students and faculty to discuss University issues

ldquoIrsquove found this to be a ne way to share information and look for-ward to spending time with a num-ber of you over the coming weeksrdquo he said

Schmidly has been on extended medical leave since his Aug 17 op-eration on a slow-growing abdom-inal tumor and in mid-October Schmidly appointed Roth executive vice president of Health Sciences as acting president until he is cleared to return

University Spokeswoman Susan McKinsey said communication be-

tween Schmidly and Roth has been e ective

ldquoIt is really simple and straight-forwardrdquo she said ldquo ey are in daily telephone contactrdquo

At a November Faculty Senate meeting Senate President Richard Wood voiced support for Roth and the work he has done in Schmidlyrsquos absence

ldquoHe has been meeting with a lot of faculty and I believe he is re-ally listeningrdquo Wood said ldquo e dis-course of the University has shifted in a very important way e tone

and tenor of the meetings and the kind of meetings that are happen-ing have changed in very important waysrdquo

And communication to students faculty and sta has continued without a hitch through the Monday Morning Message which University administrators including Roth and Schmidly collaborate on McKinsey said

Wood also said he supports Rothrsquos policies on impending bud-get cuts though he was reluc-tant to compare Rothrsquos stance with Schmidlyrsquos

ldquoActing President Roth has ad-opted a lot of what I believe to be the right languagerdquo Wood said at the November meeting ldquoEven in these hard budget times he has said lsquo ere will be no 5 percent across-the-board cuts to academic depart-ments we will make better budget decisionsrsquordquo

A Nov 12 Albuquerque Journal article reported that Schmidly is continuing to get full bene ts de-spite his extended medical absence Schmidly was eligible for a maxi-mum of three months sick leave the Journal reported but the three-month mark passed more than a week ago

In a Nov 22 University-wide e-mail Roth contested ldquorumorsrdquo that Schmidlyrsquos sick leave was coming to an end

ldquoLet me say that following (After) his surgery in August he su ered a very stormy and di cult post-op-erative course resulting in a longer than expected convalescencerdquo Roth said in the e-mail ldquoHe is however continuing to make a strong recov-ery and we fully expect his return to

duty well before his maximum ex-tended sick leave bene ts expire in February 2011rdquo

Roth also said that Schmidlyrsquos bene ts and sick-leave allowanc-es are governed by University poli-cies In addition to extended leave Schmidly is allowed almost six weeks of annual leave which could only extend his absence with bene- ts through the end of December if he hasnrsquot already taken any person-al leave

University o cials declined to release the amount of personal time Schmidly has used

According to University policy an employee returning to work af-ter an extended medical leave must submit a physicianrsquos statement cer-tifying that the employee can safely return to work something Schmidly is not yet able to do

Greg Overman right took over the Bike Coop on Central Avenue in 1998 He dropped out of New Mexico State University in 1972 because of financial problems He was studying music at the time and he worked in a bike shop in Las Cruces He said he hadnrsquot planned on being a life-long bike mechanic ldquoBut doing what you enjoy is quite a privilegerdquo Overman said ldquoEspecially if thatrsquos your job and you get to do what you enjoyrdquoAfter moving to Albuquerque in 1973 he kept working on bikes in different shops around town He said his mother taught him how to fix things ldquoWhen I was a little kid I liked taking things apart and not always putting them togetherrdquo he said ldquoMy mother made it clear to me that if I was gonna do that I have to learn how to put it back together so it will work And thatrsquos how I started itrdquo ldquoLife is short All I have to do is enjoy as much as I canrdquo he said

This marks the last column in the Afro-American Experience series which has ran since the beginning of the semester We hope you got some insight from reading these heartfelt installments and good luck on your final exams

Political science major Patrick Barrett said prisons retain more black men than universities do

ldquoYou donrsquot see too may African-Americans at the graduate levelrdquo he said

ldquoA lot of people with a criminal record theyrsquore not entitled to go to school Wersquore here on scholarships and grants Once yoursquore convicted of a felony thatrsquos all out the window Most of them are charged with non-violent drug offenses Itrsquos mostly pet-ty drug sales and most people plead out without ever realizing how itrsquos go-ing to impact their futurerdquo

He said former President Ronald Reaganrsquos administration gave police departments monetary incentives to go after drug offenders

ldquoHis war on drugs really devas-tated the black communityrdquo Barrett said

He said that in 1990 there were 900 college graduates in Wisconsin compared with 18000 prisoners in the same state that year

As the president of the Black Stu-dent Union Barrett wants to repre-sent a more real picture of African-Americans

ldquoNot all black men sag their pants but wersquore honorable righteous men that take care of our families who are responsible and work hardrdquo he said ldquoAnd the way Irsquove made it through

this academic world has been through people like Dr Jamal Martin Dr (Charles) Becknell and Dr (Fin-nie) Coleman Since we donrsquot have a large number black students have to reach out to these guys to help them succeed in this type of environ-ment because theyrsquove been through what wersquore trying to go through They can give us pointers how to navigate through this system Itrsquos more like a mentoring

He said a lot of students probably donrsquot realize they do this He blames studentsrsquo subconscious biases on how the media portrays African-Americans and wishes people would look beyond the superficial media

Agitated by a suggestion that other Kappa Alpha Psi members allegedly brawled with security at a downtown nightclub the frater-nityrsquos faculty adviser Richard White wanted to make one thing clear

White said to his knowledge only UNM football players Julion Conley Bryant Williams and Joe Harris mdash all members of the fra-ternity mdash were involved in an al-tercation at Lotus Nightclub early Thanksgiving morning even though an Athletics Department statement sent out Nov 26 quoted head coach Mike Locksley as saying ldquoseveral members of a fraternity on campus were involved in an altercation at a downtown nightclubrdquo

White said the coverage on the brawl has unnecessarily thrust the fraternity into the spotlight

ldquoI donrsquot think we would have been implicated in this situation if somebody hadnrsquot put our name in thererdquo he said ldquoIf we had hosted a party or something wersquod be having a totally different conversation Itrsquos just individuals acting on their own

Unfortunately our fraternity is at-tached to behavior of others and we have to make sure we take prop-er actionsrdquo

The fallout prompted White to suspend all social activities for the remainder of the academic school year That all fraternity members are suffering from the actions of a few is unfortunate White said but itrsquos necessary to send a deterrent mes-sage and uphold the organizationrsquos tenets of accountability achieve-ment and excellence

This came a day after Kim Kloep-pel with the Dean of Students told the Daily Lobo that her office was investigating the matter to deter-mine whether the three football players breached the Universityrsquos Student Code of Conduct She said it also planned to explore whether other Kappa Alpha Psi members were involved in the scuffle or were with Conley at the club when the in-cident occurred

Kloeppel had few new details Tuesday and said her office had yet to receive the APD report but some of her staff members had phoned the club owner and Ath-letics representatives to find more

information If found to have violated UNMrsquos

Student Code of Conduct Conley Williams and Harris face ldquoverbalwritten warnings disciplinary pro-bation suspension or possible ex-pulsionrdquo according to the sanctions section

Because it was not a sponsored fraternity event White admitted he hadnrsquot looked into the incident and said the players acted on their own He said their behavior is not indicative of what the fraternity promotes

At least four security personnel and a go-go dancer were injured in the brawl when security personnel said someone with Conley tried to gain access to the nightclubrsquos 21-and-over section using Conleyrsquos ID

No criminal charges have been filed against Williams or Harris but an APD spokeswoman said Mon-day that the two would likely be summoned to court in the future As for Conley his court date is still pending and owner Brian Craig has threatened to take criminal and civ-il action against the three football players

In Tuesdayrsquos article ldquoHousing lsquoplanrsquo confuses wor-ries communityrdquo a quote from Real Estate director Kim Murphy which appeared at the very end of the story was cut short and could perhaps be taken out of context His full statement about what would need to be determined before a ground lease with ACC was signed was ldquoAre we going to have everything from A to Z figured out when we sign it That will come later There are a lot of details and there will be an abundance of material in the ground lease that sort of sets the framework of how wersquore going to collectively op-

erate and manage this housing programrdquo

I was on campus today and picked up the Daily Lobo

I was interested to read Muhajir Rome-rorsquos letter It certainly was a powerful state-ment but I must confess that part of it left me confused namely his statement that the majority of Arab leaders have ldquosold their souls to the godless Zionists

Irsquom a Jew and a Zionist Irsquove been a Zion-ist as long as I can remember and listened to my motherrsquos stories about surviving an-ti-Jewish riots at the University of Vienna in the early 1930s knowing that her father (my grandfather) was one of the last Jews to get out of Vienna in 1939

I took my first trip to Israel at 14 and have been back several times My sister lives in Israel My nephew is Israeli and

my incredibly cute grandniece is an 11-month-old Israeli

My confusion stems from the fact that I have regular Shabbat dinners at my home welcoming in the Shabbat with the appro-priate prayers I attend Shabbat morning services regularly Irsquom hosting a Hanukkah party this year and Irsquom invited to two oth-ers I consider myself religious not god-less All the rabbis I have known have been Zionists and all my religious school teach-ers too

So I am confused about why the Arab leaders sold out to godless Zionists

Zionism the goal to live as a free and in-dependent Jewish people on our own land dates back to Judaismrsquos earliest days to the psalmist who wrote By the rivers of Baby-lon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion (Psalm 137)

Religious Zionists certainly compose the majority of soldiers in the Israeli De-fense Forces and Jews around the world say next year in Jerusalem at the end of the Passover Seder every year

I think it is unfair that the Arab leaders have sold their souls to an almost infinites-imal minority of the Jewish people There hasnrsquot even been a godless party since the decline of Mapam in the 1960s

On the other hand perhaps if Romero inadvertently misspoke and Arab leaders have in fact sold their souls to all Zionists regardless of degree of religious obser-vance why havenrsquot I gotten some of that money

I would greatly appreciate it if he would let me know where I can go to receive my payment from Arab leaders to the Zionists Could I receive payment here in the US

Do I have to collect payment in Israel In an Arab capital

Again I would greatly appreciate any information Romero has in this regard Thank you

Itrsquos wonderful to see that the Daily Lobo provides a voice for even the most

deranged and ignorant of UNMrsquos student body

One such student the admirably vocal Muhajir Romero managed to outdo him-self in a recently published letter wherein he shamelessly reduces the innumerable complexities of an entire geopolitical re-gion into a single vitriolic anti-Semitic conspiracy theory

Thank you for reminding me that I have the privilege of sharing my academic en-vironment with maniacs such as Romero Irsquom looking forward to further scrutinizing his apparent incapacity for thought or rea-son in future publishings Jacob Peifer UNM student

Irsquove spent most of my time these days staring at the cat and weeping

You see Irsquom worried sick about the peo-ple who earn over $200000 a year

These people are the most productive members of our society They own small businesses and they have created scads of jobs in recent year in places like Ban-gladesh There are only about 200 such individuals in New Mexico and they are all friends of mine and former Gov Bill Richardson

I feel such a sense of outrage about this injustice that I have developed a counter-proposal that has so much incredible posi-tive merit that it just makes me tremble to think about it

Letrsquos not tax these fantastically produc-tive and creative citizens who are all prob-ably college graduates Letrsquos tax the unem-ployed There are about 2 million of these unproductive louts who are just stand-ing around doing nothing but sucking up space

If these bums had any merit or talent the rich productive folks would have hired them long ago Instead these wastrels just keep on collecting government checks and driving up the national debt These lazy dope smokers should be contributing to society

Taxing the unemployed has two distinct advantages No 1 these unemployed hip-pies canrsquot afford to hire tax attorneys and accountants to defend themselves so itrsquos quite simple to collect their tax dollars

No 2 if we tax them hard enough per-haps they will stop using up valuable re-sources such as food and air They will just fade away and stop bothering us

After all this is America so letrsquos get in the holiday spirit and tax the unemployed this happy season Merry Christmas and ho-ho-ho everyone

Editorrsquos Note It starts with something simple but expensive say a $276 speeding ticket from the grand state of Oklahoma

Suddenly donating plasma to get money not only becomes and option but a necessity You heard somewhere you donrsquot really need your plasma at least not all of it and since you need or at least want some extra cash you decide to check it out

But let the Daily Lobo save you the trouble of something you might be incapable of doing Culture Ed-itor Chris Quintana literally gave up his life fluid for you people so you would have a better sense of what goes on in plasma donation

My day at the Yale Plasma Cen-ter began at 10 am and didnrsquot fin-ish until 230 pm The process in-cludes a medical screening health questions an AIDS awareness test and waiting And more waiting And then more waiting just when I thought it was all over

And when I was done with all that therersquos the needle

Itrsquos about the size of a ballpoint pen tip and it goes in the vein right in the crook of the arm But I am getting a bit ahead of myself

For those interested in donat-ing herersquos whatrsquos required a let-ter addressed to you within the last 30 days your social securi-

ty card and your state driverrsquos li-cense to verify your identity

From here itrsquos all about the questionnaires They give you a giant packet to read stuff deal-ing with AIDS Crohnrsquos disease eating habits dangers associated with donation and so on A couple of new donors were there the day I came in and they just skimmed over everything Itrsquos safe to say thatrsquos probably standard

From there begin the ques-tionnaires They ask about any diseases surgeries tattoos (sorry folks but some tattoos specifi-cally those that canrsquot be verified by a professional agency will dis-qualify you from donating) sexu-al activity and any time spent in Europe

I answered the same questions about two or three times but itrsquos reassuring in a way This plas-ma is going to help someone the signs in the clinic says and it only makes sense that they would want to run checks on it

Herersquos the difficult part They are long waits between these questions the first time you go in Therersquos a lot of processing of re-cords blood and urine that takes a while On top of that they enter you into their system and check you against a plasma registry to make sure you havenrsquot been blacklisted from any other plasma donation centers Standard stuff mostly but it takes a long while

Actually waiting after a while

does terrible things to the mind You start wondering if the per-son in front of you cut whether the people dealing with your files are actually doing anything other than just chatting with one anoth-er Basically you go insane and then wait even longer

From there itrsquos a urine test and from there a brief and non-invasive physical And then some more waiting The whole time you do this return donors come in sign a sheet and then are called to the back where they are hooked up to large machines You see this and wish it was you because they get to leave sooner

Eventually once your paper-work is done and the tests fin-ished you go through the nor-mal donation process They pull up your file and call you to the front desk They prick you with a needle and weigh you They also mark you with a UV marker so you canrsquot donate at other centers They ask you more questions and then you wait again and then fi-nally yoursquore called back

There are rows of machines each with a tiny centrifuge in-side It draws blood then spins it separating the red blood cells from plasma and then returns the blood but to do any of this itrsquos got to draw blood and that blood comes from human beings In this case me

Which brings us back to the needle

See I used to donate plasma as a freshman and I have slight scars on my arms from it I know the process of getting stuck as the phlebotomists and patrons call it and I did fine until an infiltration occurred

Thatrsquos when the phlebotomist ruptures the vein with the needle Then the skin swells in my case to golf ball size They gave me ice for the swelling and I was fine but spooked

I stopped for a while but then needed more money and came back as is the case with most peo-ple there Ask anyone in the clinic A lot have had this happen some are even happy You get an extra $5 when it does

This time the stick went off without a hitch Therersquos a tiny amount of pain when the needle enters the vein but it goes away quickly and from there itrsquos just suction

The blood is drawn put into the machine spun and returned once the plasma is harvested The returned red blood cells feel a little cold but itrsquos reassuring to

know yoursquore getting your blood back

This cycle happens about four to six times depending on how fatty your blood is and thatrsquos it Therersquos a bottle that you can see filling with your plasma as an in-dication of how much longer you have to go The person donating generally loses about a liter of flu-id but it depends

I ended up hooked to the ma-chine for about an hour and a half but that was largely my fault (See graphic)

The removal of the needle is also painless They pull it out you apply pressure on the wound and then they wrap it tight with gauze to prevent bleeding

After the process I was a bit woozy and lightheaded but I got $20 the first time The next visit I am scheduled for $35 And I got to say I was pleased Sure therersquos the issue of selling bodily fluids but the money is so easy and fast

The rates are different because amounts of plasma are withdrawn based on weight Obviously the smaller the weight the smaller of amount of fluid drawn and the smaller price tag And yes there are weight limits for those that are too heavy or too light

Tips for successful

plasma donationDrink lots of water If you

already drink water you will need to drink more to make sure your body can stand losing about a liter of fluid

The staff has a saline solution that helps keep you hydrated and your blood from

coagulating but it doesnrsquot hurt to be prepared

Avoid fatty foods and dairy products the day before donation They will put fat in your blood

and make the donation process longer than it needs to be

No alcohol or caffeine before donation day Alcohol will dry you out completely and caffeine

will cause excessive urinationBring a book or some form of distraction This

way you donrsquot go crazy from waiting

Luis Jimeacutenezrsquos gaudy on-campus fiesta dancers have spurred unfavor-able reactions from passersby but their appearance is intended to por-tray Southwest working class mem-bersrsquo lives

Graduate student Eric Castillo is writing his thesis on the artist He said Jimeneacutezrsquos career began in New York City but he returned to the South-west where he produced work that il-lustrated his vision of America

ldquoA lot of it is archetypal so like universal images that have meaning for a lot of peoplerdquo Castillo said ldquoHe wanted to make sure that as many audiences as possible could relate to his workrdquo

An internationally known artist Ji-meacutenez grew up in El Paso and his up-bringing influenced his art work said Reginald Richie Jimeacutenezrsquos friend He

said Jimeacutenezrsquos vibrant color use am-plifies the statuesrsquo attributes

ldquoItrsquos a very beautiful piece and his work is very skillful very dramaticrdquo Richie said ldquoThe scale is exaggerated and so were the featuresrdquo

Jimeacutenez died in 2006 after a piece of his sculpture fell and severed his femoral artery

Installed at UNM in 1996 ldquoFiesta Jaraberdquo the dancing statues in front of Popejoy Hall is inspired by Jimeacutenezrsquos observations of dancers in Hondo NM

Delilah Montoya a friend and for-mer colleague said the statues are a cultural hybrid and Jimeneacutez want-ed to create a piece that reconciled American and Mexican differences

ldquoBecause of his Mexican back-ground he wanted to work in the themes that he understood the best and could relate tordquo she said

Student Serena Davidson said the statues arenrsquot visually appealing

ldquoI think it was a great idea just to show the Hispanic population and culture we have but the statues them-selves are kind of uglyrdquo she said

Castillo said students think the statues are unattractive but they change their mind when he ex-plains Jimeacutenezrsquos background and intentions

ldquoHis people and his images are mostly shapely people with a sort of gaudiness to themrdquo he said ldquoI mean they just look worked Their bodies look worked and that comes back to his working-class aestheticrdquo

Richie said all of Jimeacutenezrsquos work is meaningful and he said the statues convey lifersquos beauty

ldquoItrsquos the enjoyment of human life mdash the human sexuality thatrsquos really obviousrdquo he said ldquoThe passion and the joy of life beauty and the human spirit He was interested in life the way life is livedrdquo

Because of rave-like atmo-spheres with live DJs Albuquer-que has seen an explosion in the number of city hookah lounges Bubble Lounge manager Ahmad Al-Qasem said

ldquoWe used to have a big line in hererdquo he said ldquoRight now we have a lot of hookah lounges out this wayrdquo

Bubble Lounge employee Kirsten Brothers said most of their customers are under 21 She said she got a job at the es-tablishment after frequenting the joint as a teenager

ldquoI was in here all the time as a little teeny-bopper so they hired merdquo she said

Terrene Hookah co-own-er Aaron Roth said hookah lounges have enjoyable atmo-spheres and thatrsquos what attracts

customers He said Terrene doesnrsquot scout for bands the acts come to them

ldquoThe atmosphere the clien-tele that we have is a lot more laid-backrdquo he said ldquoWe tend to have lower-volume music so people can talk to each other And thatrsquos how it should berdquo

Bobby Burdock Terrenersquos other co-owner said the lounge draws a diverse crowd not just under-21 patrons who canrsquot go to bars

ldquoWe get anybody from 50-year-olds to 18 students to work-ers All of rsquoemrdquo he said ldquoYou get the club crowd you get the re-laxed crowd We get everybody in here pretty much The older crowd likes it because itrsquos not super-loudrdquo

UNM student Mike Perino 23 said he prefers newly opened Hookah Star to the Albuquerque bar scene

ldquoI donrsquot really go to bars that oftenrdquo he said ldquoDuring the

summer Irsquoll tend to go a bit more because the Rapid Ride runs late but itrsquos hard to drive to a bar be-cause I refuse to drink and drive ldquo(And) this is a great place be-cause you can smoke cigarettes in here Itrsquos so nice to not have to go out in the frigid weatherrdquo

Terrene manager Jack Jacob said the establishment has one major advantage over other local hookah lounges

ldquoWe have something that no-body else has which is foodrdquo he said ldquoNobody in Albuquerque can sell shisha with food Thatrsquos what makes us differentrdquo

Still many people support the hookah lounges for simpler reasons

Matt Salvio a 19-year-old Bubble Lounge customer said he goes to the hookah lounge be-cause they have pool tables and he lives close by Will he contin-ue to come to the Bubble Lounge once he turns 21

Junfu Han Daily Lobo

Greg Overman right took over the Bike Coop on Central Avenue in 1998 He dropped out of New Mexico State University in 1972 because of financial problems He was studying music at the time and he worked in a bike shop in Las Cruces He said he hadnrsquot planned on being a life-long bike mechanic ldquoBut doing what you enjoy is quite a privilegerdquo Overman said ldquoEspecially if thatrsquos your job and you get to do what you enjoyrdquoAfter moving to Albuquerque in 1973 he kept working on bikes in different shops around town He said his mother taught him how to fix things ldquoWhen I was a little kid I liked taking things apart and not always putting them togetherrdquo he said ldquoMy mother made it clear to me that if I was gonna do that I have to learn how to put it back together so it will work And thatrsquos how I started itrdquo ldquoLife is short All I have to do is enjoy as much as I canrdquo he said
