What’s planned for 2012

• Ports – Analysis of RTGs in Savannah, GA. They are installing 2-4 bus bar type electric rubber tired gantry cranes.

• Ports – EPRI PHEV Yard Tractor dyno comparison in process and to be completed. Possible optimization of that tractor in 2012.

• Airport – Development of additional prototype cargo tractor, and demonstration. Project is being developed now, scope is open to multiple airports.

• Airport – Electrification plan from FAA ACRP 02-16: Airport Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Inventory and Emission Reduction Strategies results

What’s planned for 2012 (con’t)

• Mining – Development of two types of chargers.– Fast charger with a single port charger intended for a 128-volt

battery.– High frequency dual port charger for the equipment that uses

two 64-volt batteries.• Rail Electrification (Passenger rail, switch locomotives,

high speed rail, analytical tools)• Non-road Video – 5-6 minute summary showcasing

Non-road ET. Will develop multiple industry videos for EPRI web from clips not used in summary.

• Mobile forklift calculator (on iTunes)

Non-road Electric Transportation Market and Environmental Assessment Model & Demo

1. Develop model (collaborative)Framework enables a utility to estimate the potential

environmental and economic impacts of a non-road electric transportation program

Inputs:

• Number of pieces of each technology to be analyzed

• Weighting percentages to criteria

• Financial information

• kW/kWh rates

• Program administration costs

Non-road ET Mkt. & Enviro Model & Demo (con’t)

1. Model output will assess estimated: – Load impact per technology (kW)– Total program impacts (kW)– Cost-effectiveness of program implementation– Technology potential ranking– Expected program revenue– Environmental impact

Page 12: Non-road Electric Transportation Update - EPRImydocs.epri.com/docs/publicmeetingmaterials/1112...• Ports: Dredge – Study completed on electric dredging at the Port of Long Beach.

2. Energy efficiency and demand response analysis– Despite increased electricity use, decreased emissions,

oil use and other societal benefits should be counted– This study will quantify these potential benefits and

demonstrate how they translate into environmental and economic gains for the utility and region (and meet energy efficiency and demand response goals)

– White paper can be shared with utility management and regulators

3. Demonstrate the model with regional informationSub-task 3A: Market Analysis

– Utility, with support from EPRI, chooses six non-road electric technologies to assess in its region

– EPRI conducts a market potential and impact report for each selected technology

Sub-task 3B: Cost Benefit Analysis– Analyze the structure, financial performance, risks, and

other characteristics of various business models designed to support the growth of non-road electric technologies.

3. Demonstrate the model with regional informationSub-task 3C: Implementation Plan

– EPRI develops four scenarios of most efficient path for the utility to meet its goal

– Additional scenario development can be added– Utility or a third-party implements the plan
