THIRTY-THIRDSUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH TIMES “It’s going to get worse before it gets better” is a phrase that prepares us to buckle up for a rough ride. We know that enduring a difficult time will require some strenuous physical or emotional energy on our part before we experience the calm of normality. Our past experience tells us that we can endure the difficult pressure better when we know how long it will last and if we know that something better awaits us. Getting through the

tough times while holding to the promise that awaits us is the message of this weekend’s readings. They point toward the promises of God’s kingdom that will come after the maelstroms and chaos of this world.

10th, 11th & 12th GRADERS: JOIN US FOR ANTIOCH 69

"Antioch has helped me so much in these tough teen years. It helped me get closer to God and has changed so many different aspects of my life because of that. My relationships with my family members and friends have improved greatly. Antioch has helped me battle through high school and all that comes along with it because it has helped me get to know God."

Applications are available for Antioch 69, to

be held the weekend of December 18, 19, & 20, 2015.

Please register online at www.ndcarmel.com.

Applications are due Sunday, November 22. If you have any questions, please contact Pete DeNigris at [email protected]

or call our Parish Office at 973-538-1358, ext. 102.

SENIOR LUNCHEON REMINDER! Tomorrow, Monday, November 16, 2015,

following our 12:10pm Mass. We look forward to seeing you!

IF YOU COULD HELP BRING A FAMILY BACK TO CHURCH, WOULD YOU?

Many young families stop coming to Mass due to struggles they encounter in keeping their little ones from being disruptive during Mass. Our Shepherd's Call Ministry gives families an opportunity to come to our 9am or 10:30am Mass and change an experience of stress and

frustration to one of spiritual nourishment for the entire family!

Will you consider helping us? Ministers are scheduled to serve only once per month or less, based on personal availability, and may choose to serve during the 9am or 10:30am Mass (or both!). About an hour and half of your time each month is all it takes to bring these families back to Mass! If you are able to make a difference in the lives of these families, contact Kelli White at [email protected], Norma Jahl at [email protected].

Married couples: Join us for an evening of MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT

Our Marriage Enrichment gatherings are very casual and informal -- we share fellowship and light refreshments for about ½ hour and then gather to reflect and share thoughts on particular themes that help strengthen our marriages. If you have never attended a gathering, please join us Friday, November 20, at 7:30pm, at the home of parishioners Ralph & Diana Thomas. If you have any questions, or to RSVP, please contact Ralph & Diana at 973-267-5871.

WOMEN'S GUIDED MEDITATION

Women of our faith community, please join us for Women's Guided Meditation, an opportunity to refresh your spirit and strengthen your faith. Our next gathering will take place Wednesday, November 18, 7:30-8:30pm in our Resource Room. Bring a friend!

NATIONAL BIBLE WEEK 2015—THE BIBLE: A BOOK FOR THE FAMILY

National Bible Week provides a unique opportunity for parents to revisit and renew their understanding of the power of the Word of God in the life of their family. As leaders of the “domestic Church,” parents are encouraged to be not only the first but the best of teachers for their children in the ways of faith. Parents help fulfill this challenge by ensuring that Scripture, the living Word of God, is given due emphasis in the life and activity of the

home. The more deeply the Word is rooted in the home, the more the entire family grows in relationship to Christ and to one another. Parents today rightly take time to promote family health by choosing appropriate food, drink, and exercise to build healthy bodies and by forming their children in proper study habits. A critical component of the spiritual health of any family is a well-balanced diet of God’s Word. Wise parents understand that building healthy habits requires daily attention and repetition, rather than occasional focus. The same is true of habits in the home surrounding the Word of God. It must be a daily effort

Focus First on Self—The first rule of making the Word of God a central part of the home is to first make it a priority in one’s own life. Parents cannot pass on to children what is not firmly rooted in their own lives. Take a few moments each day to read God’s Word. Slowly pray through a Gospel or a New Testament letter, reading a few minutes each day. Be sure that your children see you spending time with the Word.

By actively participating in some form of involvement with the Bible, your family can be assured that the Word of God will become a prominent part of your home and that family members will, at an early age, recognize the person of Christ in his Word and grow in God’s love throughout their lives.

“Overcoming real & self-imposed limits” McFarland, USA, starring Kevin Costner, is a funny and inspiring movie based on the real story of Jim White, a football coach who, looking for new opportunities after losing his job, moves with his wife and two daughters to a poor neighborhood in the County of McFarland in the state of California, populated mostly by Hispanics.

The central focus of this story, revolves around the work of Jim as a high school physical education teacher, where he discovers the potential of some students for cross country running. With no experience coaching this sport,

which the movie shows us as exclusive for schools with more funds, White and a group of students – at the beginning reluctant – embark in an entire sports adventure.

He will need to use cunning, motivation and creativity to overcome the obstacles that will present themselves. But most of all, he shall win over the students, each of them with their own problems and challenges. With the guidance of White, in a sport where the individual victory and team effort are equally important, the boys will discover a new sense of friendship, solidarity, and, in particular, overcoming real and self-imposed limits. At the same time, White – and his family – will discover in McFarland a community experience and a sense of belonging as they never felt it before.

Even though the story has been told many times, McFarland, USA manages to successfully overcome the stereotypes to offer in a new way an entertaining story full of values and an important testimony about the individual effort and the necessity of bonds that join us with others to achieve goals.

FROM OUR DIOCESAN DIRECTOR OF MUSIC Diocesan Children’s Choir

Our project-based Diocesan Children's Choir will continue this year. These young people will join the regular Diocesan Choir this December 6th for the Christmas Concert and have this springboard into the NYC Pueri Cantores Festival in April as well as the Diocesan Celebration for First Communicants with Bishop Serratelli next May.

Children in grades 4-8 are welcome to participate. There will be 4 rehearsals for the Christmas Concert, and are listed at www.patersondiocese.org/choir. Children need not be part of a school or parish choir and even 1 child from a parish or school is encouraged to participate, as together from the Diocese they will become many! Music will be provided and there is no registration charge. All rehearsals and the Christmas Concert will be at St. Peter the Apostle in Parsippany. 2015 BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL Serving Christ Among Us

The Eucharist is the summit and source of the Church’s life (Lumen Gentium, 11) At the Last Supper, Jesus not only gave us this great gift, but he instituted the priesthood so that, in every age and in every place, the Eucharist could be celebrated. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal helps fund the education of our seminarians. With the blessing of increased vocations to the priesthood in our Diocese, comes the obligation to prepare these men who will one day serve our parishes. Your participation in the Appeal helps to make that happen. Please make a pledge to the 2015 Bishop’s Annual Appeal today! For your convenience, you can make an online gift at www.2015appeal.org.

SEARCHING FOR MEANING...

Viktor Frankl, author of Man’s Search For Meaning, was a survivor of the Nazi concentration camps. He has done great work in the study of meaning in life. He suggests, “Live as if you were living for the second time and had acted as wrongly the first time as you are

about to act now.” Making this an active part of your decision making process takes you out of the equation for a moment so you can look at your choices objectively. This practice of contemplation allows the mind to see alternate outcomes in order to lead to a decision that is not merely emotion based.

This internal struggle is usually based on our view of freedom and happiness. Our view as a culture is that in order to obtain the happiness that we seek, we need freedom from suffering. Freedom from suffering is a fruitless venture. We all suffer. Unavoidable suffering can be one of the ways that we find meaning in our lives. Meaning brings us hope, and through that hope we experience happiness.

Frankl states: “you don’t pursue happiness, you ensue it.” Happiness is not a goal to be reached in itself, it is a side effect of finding of meaning through love, through service, through faith and even through suffering.
