MASS INTENTIONS

O P V —Notre Dame of Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic community of faith called to be missionary disciples of Jesus Christ, for the purpose of bringing about the Kingdom.

O P M —Formed by the Word, fed at the Table, and inspired by the Holy Spirit, we INVITE, WELCOME and GUIDE each other into relationship with Christ, to GO OUT and MAKE missionary disciples.

THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD

The Gift of God’s Word

On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of God's Word. Because it is creative, God's Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God's Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Because it is graceful, God's Word establishes a relationship of deep intimacy between us and God.

At the heart of God's Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning.

Once accepted and opened, the gift of God's Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in return. It dares us to be like the gift-giver and to become gifts for others, not only at Christmas, but at every moment of life.

HEALING ENCOUNTERED THROUGH A CATHOLIC’S DIVORCE SURVIVAL SERIES

Led by three amazing ND disciples, a small group of folks from our community began back in September, the 12-week journey "A Catholic's Divorce Survival Guide." Their series concluded a couple of weeks ago.

This is the third year our parish has offered this journey; there is no doubt that with the blessing and guidance of the Holy Spirit, this program and the leadership of this ministry has brought healing, peace and hope to those who answered the call to be a part it. As we share below some thoughts from participants, let us pray others who have faced the pain of separation or divorce find the courage to search for Christ's healing, peace and hope. A new series will be offered here at ND beginning in September, 2017.

"This program has given me a chance to recover from Divorce and begin to put my life back together with 10 new friends who are on a similar journey and who also share my Catholic faith."

"We came for healing of ourselves and realized that we could be helpful to each other's healing. And that our future will be better as a result of our taking these positive steps. I know that my outlook on life has been positively changed by this experience."

"I found that missing piece of the healing process, the piece that finally allowed me to close a painful chapter in my life, come to piece with life and move forward."

"Each person brought something special and unique to the discussion. I think we all shared some very personal feelings with the comfort of knowing we would not be judged."

"Thank you listening and sharing and supporting. The power of community is awesome and our faith is strong and bonded us together."

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR PARISH FAMILY FOR MAKING

A TRUE “ANGEL” DIFFERENCE!

Your response to our Angel Tree effort was overwhelming! The two Angel Trees in our gathering space were replenished with tags a few times, as you so lovingly chose to include these special Christmas wishes on your personal shopping lists. You deeply touched the hearts and lives of the many who

were blessed by your thoughtfulness and generosity. After gathering over 970 presents, we were able to give toys to the children of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and “Toys for Tots,” as well as gifts to the clients of Greystone, the Jersey Battered Women’s Service, the Father English Center in Paterson, NAMI and a homeless shelter. In addition, we had over $600 in cash donations and gift cards which were used to help a number of families in need right here in our community.

We extend a special thank you to our lead Angel Tree Coordinator, Deb Brazzel, who has been leading this special ministry for over 11 years! We thank as well as her angel assistants, Roe Doherty, Susan O’Connor, Ginny Martin, Katelyn Gavin and Joanne McHugh. These generous disciples continue to lend their valuable time and talent by sorting, wrapping and delivering all those presents!

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” - Matthew 25:40

OUR CHRIST’S CORNER GIFT SHOP NEEDS YOUR HELP!

If you attend 10:30am or 12:15pm Mass regularly and can offer your smile and sales support for 20 minutes to ½ hour before and/or after that Mass, please join our Gift Shop ministry; no experience necessary - we will train you! It is a wonderful opportunity to serve our parish and also

get to know many of our friendly & faithful "shoppers." Please contact our parish office at 973-538-1358, ext. 105.

A NEW YEAR’S PRAYER

It's a new beginning, Lord, a new day, a new month, a new year: and I know that new beginnings come in different ways for different folks...

So, I pray today for all who've longed, hungered and waited for a new year, eager to leave the past year behind…

I pray for those who are more than ready to move beyond the hurt and disappointment, the grief and burdens of 2016...

I pray for those who desire a new beginning, who pray for a new grace to look afresh at everyone and everything…

I pray you give the grace we need, Lord, to begin again, to trust again, to try again, to hope again in you and in your love for us…

I pray this morning for those who are stuck, Lord, for those who’ve lost the energy, the courage, the desire to look ahead to a new beginning...

I pray for those who’ve lost a sense of when one day ends and another begins...

I pray for those so tired of yesterday they’ve lost a taste for tomorrow…

I pray you give the grace we need, Lord, to begin again, to trust again, to try again, to hope again in you and in your love for us…

And I pray, Lord, for those too tired to mark the beauty of a rising sun, the solace of a silvery moon…

I pray for those weighed down by worries, fears and problems, burdened by too much work, with too little time to do it…

I pray for those whose days and nights blur, keeping them from rest and relaxation...

I pray you give the grace we need, Lord, to begin again, to trust again, to try again, to hope again in you and in your love for us…

And I pray, Lord, for those who miss the gentle ways you hold us when we’re weary, strengthen us when we’re weak and carry us from day to day...

I pray for those who need to see how faithfully you walk with us: each hour, day and week through which we pass…

I pray for those who long for your healing of the year we leave behind and for your peace in the year we've just begun...

I pray you give the grace we need, Lord, to begin again, to trust again, to try again, to hope again in you and in your love for us…

Send your Spirit, Lord, to open our minds and hearts to all you'll offer us in the year ahead...

May this truly be a year of grace: may your mercy be our healing and your healing be our hope…

Give us what we need, Lord, to begin again, to trust again, to try again, to hope again in you and in your love for us….

Amen.

2016 ROSEN AWARDS

For the past 15 years the Jane Delores Rosen “Saint on Every Corner Award” has recognized Confirmation candidates who have devoted themselves to outstanding service to the Notre Dame of Mount Carmel Parish Family. This year’s Rosen awards were presented on Saturday, December 10 at the 5pm Mass to Ryan Wilson and Conor Danus. These outstanding youth strive to follow in the footsteps of Jesus by selflessly serving others as Jane Rosen did.

Ryan has been an Altar Server for a number of years now and also brings his giftedness on drums to both the Teen Band and to our liturgies. He has been part of our Antioch ministry and has helped bring other teens closer to Christ. Conor has been part of our Altar Server ministry and has helped with Faith Formation. We recently heard from a parishioner who, while facing health challenges, has been on the receiving end of Conor’s kindness: “He has been my angel, always finding time to give me a hand. The past couple of winters he's been there shoveling the walk and driveway; he brings his mom, dad & brother to assist him and never expects anything in return; he does these things out of the kindness of his heart.”

We are so grateful to both of these teens for their amazing example of Christian love and discipleship!

A PRAYER SHAWL: A TANGIBLE SIGN OF GOD'S LOVE

Do you know someone in need of strength while undergoing a medical procedure? In need of comfort after a loss?

In need of peace and patience during an illness?

Through a prayer shawl or a lap blanket, our Prayer Shawl ministry may offer that tangible sign of God's love, peace and comfort to your loved one. Each prayer shawl (or lap blanket) is made with prayer. The maker of the shawl prays before, during, and after they work on the shawl. To request a prayer shawl, please contact Maryann Johnston at (973) 539-7835

If you have time and talent to bring to our ministry, won't you join us? We meet the 2nd Saturday of every month at 1pm, downstairs in our Resource Room. If you have yarn to donate we would be grateful for your donation. Any questions? Call Alice Muir at 973-451-1983.

PLEASE NOTE! Our ministry will not gather in January. Our next gathering will be on Saturday, February 11 at 1pm.

COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS

The Compassionate Friends, a self-help group for bereaved parents, siblings, and grandparents will be meeting on Thursday, January 12, 2016, 7:30pm, at St. Christopher's Church, 1050 Littleton Road (Rt. 202), Parsippany, room 101. The evening’s program will be “New Year, New Beginnings”. For more

information please call Lily Capriglione at: 973-568-4164. 365 DAYS WITH MARY

was, bringing some very special teens closer to Christ.

SAVE THE DATE: FAMILY PASTA DINNER Saturday, January 21, 2017

Make your reservations in the Gathering Space the weekends of January 7/8 or 14/15, after any of our weekend Masses.

RACHEL'S VINEYARD RETREAT

Rachel's Vineyard is a safe place to renew, rebuild, and redeem hearts broken by abortion. Weekend retreats offer a supportive, confidential, and non-judgmental environment where women and men can express, release, and reconcile painful post-abortive emotions and

begin the process of restoration, renewal, and healing. A Rachel's Vineyard Retreat will be held from Friday evening, January 27 through Sunday afternoon, January 29, 2017 in the Stirling area.
