100th Birthday Treat Was Visit To
Old Rectory
When life-long Methodist Margaret Mackenzie was
asked what she wanted as a present for her 100th
birthday, the centenarian immediately replied that
she wanted to visit Epworth‘s Old Rectory Museum.
For the Grade 1 listed building is the birthplace of
John and Charles Wesley - founders of the
movement that went on to become the Methodist
Church - and Miss Mackenzie had never visited it
before.
―I was offered a trip in a helicopter to a ride in a
chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce but as I‘ve always
wanted to visit Epworth to see the Old Rectory
Museum and its gardens, that was my choice,‖ said
the Lincoln resident.
She was greeted by the museum‘s curator, Rev
Claire Potter, who presented her with a with a
commemorative plate, depicting the Old Rectory,
and a reusable shopping bag depicting the same
scene.
Miss Mackenzie lives in at Methodist home on
Lincoln‘s Stones Place and was granted her wish by
the Methodist organisation Seize The Day, which
works out of the home.
It grants wishes for residents on their birthday and
the organisers of Seize The Day were only too
happy to drive Miss Mackenzie to Epworth in North
Lincolnshire for her visit of a lifetime.
She is the daughter of the late Rev Finlay
Mackenzie, who was a Methodist minister, and was
brought to Epworth by Seize The Day volunteers
David and Sandra Clack, who live in Lincoln‘s
Doddington Park.
The fourth person to make the trip to the Old
Rectory was Miss Mackenzie‘s friend, Mrs
Rosemary Greetham, 90, who lives at North
Hykeham, near Lincoln.
St Andrew’s Church, Epworth
Heritage Pavement Individual members of the community or group
representatives who may be interested in helping
to create the pavement are invited to drop in for a
coffee between 10 am and 12 pm on
Saturday 13th November in St Andrew‘s Church
to discuss. There will also be a chance to talk to
the artists.
Doncaster Athletics Club need to
raise around £20000 in the next 12
months to replace ageing equipment, and to
purchase covers that will prolong the life of the
new equipment which is continually exposed to the
elements. To help us achieve this goal, we are
planning to hold a Grand Christmas Draw and are
seeking your help in creating a prize list that will
make the tickets a "MUST HAVE" item. Could you,
or your business, be prepared to donate anything
that can be added to our prize list? A holiday? A
TV? A Spa Day? A big hamper? Voucher?
A full list of prizes and donators will be published
in the Arrow Magazines with a distribution of
18000 copies. Top prizes and donators will be
printed on the 10,000 tickets. Doncaster AC will
be happy to participate in publicity with
photographs of winners receiving prizes from the
donators. Full details will also be published on our
website www.doncasterathleticclub.com
These prizes could help us raise half of our
required total, and help the large number of
excellent young athletes we have at the club by
maintaining the excellent facilities we have and that
they need, to become our future Olympic
Champions!

A talk on the history and the cur-
rent role of the Yeomen of the
Guard – often mistakenly referred
to as Beefeaters – was given to
members of the Epworth Men’s
Society to mark the start of the
organisation’s 53rd winter pro-
gramme. The talk was given at the Society‘s annual dinner,
held at Belton Pavilion on Monday last week
(October 4), and was attended by about 40 mem-
bers and guests. ―The full title of the organisation is the Yeomen of
the Queen‘s Body Guard of Yeomen of the
Guard,‖ explained speaker Trevor Jones, himself a
serving Yeoman Warden for the past eight years. Mr Jones, of Manse Close, Cantley, in Doncaster,
explained that all Yeomen Wardens are volunteers
and have to be invited to join the Queen‘s body
guard. Their number, he explained, is just over 100
strong and their current role now is purely cere-
monial. He told members of the Society that the Yeomen
were formed following the Battle of Bosworth
Field in 1485, when Richard III was defeated by
Henry Tudor, who went on to become Henry VII
of England. The battle brought an end to the 40
year long War of the Roses between the house of
York and Lancashire.
Mr Jones, who had been a Regimental Sergeant
Major in the Royal Signals, told members of the
Society that the Queen‘s Body Guard of the Yeo-
men of the Guard is now the oldest Royal Body
Guard, and also the oldest military corps now
existing in this or any other country.
He went on to explain that the when Henry VIII
discontinued to use the Tower of London as his
main residence in 1502 a small contingent of Yeo-
men remained and it is they who have the nick-
name of ―Beefeaters‖.
―They are known as the Yeomen Wardens of the
Tower of London and not Yeomen of the Queen‘s
Body Guard,‖ stressed Mr Jones. Anyone interested in finding out more about the
Epworth Men‘s Society is asked to call Ken Bicker-
staff on (01427) 872288.

Epworth Police Report
The Two priorities for this ward are as follows:-
St Andrews Church area Epworth – Youths causing annoyance. There has
been identified recently a return to youths attending this area and causing
nuisance, theft, damage. This area has seen a period of improved quality of
life for both nearby residents and those using the play area and church.
However there has been a return to bad behaviour by a few people. The
Neighbourhood team will patrol and deal with any persons found or
reported to be in the area as they deem appropriate.
Update – Enquiries are being made with regard to crime prevention
possibilities with the Diocese. The new children‘s play area is near
completion.
Belton Playing Fields/Pavillion/Scouth Hut – Youths causing annoyance, arson and criminal damage - We are receiving
numerous calls regarding anti-social behaviour around the pavilion and park area. Damage has been caused and fires
have been set to bins, which is particularly worrying and potentially dangerous. Residents are encouraged to call in
reporting anything suspicious and to note descriptions of those involved and any vehicles up to no good.
Update – Enquiries are being made with regard to crime prevention possibilities.
The next police surgery for the Central Ward will be on Friday 22 October 2010 at 2pm and once again will be held
in the meeting room, School Close in Epworth. For those not familiar with this location it is off MOORFIELD
GROVE, EPWORTH. Please do come along and meet members of the Neighbourhood team who will be in
attendance and discuss with them your concerns about your community and where you live. If you are unable to
attend this meeting and you have any concerns you can alternatively e-mail PC 1839 Tina Starbuck at
[email protected] or PC 1169 Sally Jameson at [email protected] or
Police Community Support officer Stewart Pearson at [email protected] or via the police
contact number for non-emergency which is 0845 6060222 regarding any issue you would like raised.
These dates will also be advertised in the Epworth Bells and Arrow Magazine. We will endeavour to attend on these
dates unless other policing priorities prevent us from doing so.
Police Constable Sally Jameson will be attending the next Neighbourhood Action team meeting for the central ward
of the Isle of Axholme on Tuesday 7th December at the Village Hall, Belton. Members of the public can attend from
18.45 until 19.00 to speak to any of the Neighbourhood Action team members which include your local councillors
and representatives from your community. Alternatively if you cannot attend but wish a matter to be raised you can
contact the officer attending or your local parish councillor who will bring the matter to the meeting for discussion.
PC 1839 Starbuck attends and is actively involved in the Farmwatch scheme covering the south and central wards of
the Isle of Axholme. The scheme was set up with the involvement of local farmers from these wards. This was at the
request of a number of farmers to allow us to meet and discuss issues affecting their farms. The meetings were a
great success; however the last couple of meetings have had a poor turnout. Those farmers who have made the time
for a couple of hours still find it a benefit and PC Starbuck would encourage any farmer who either did attend or who
wishes to attend in the future to make a note of the next meeting in their diary – WEDNESDAY 3rd NOVEMBER
2010 at 8pm at the RED LION HOTEL, EPWORTH. The meeting only lasts at most a couple of hours. If you
require any further details please contact PC Starbuck. The farms within this area do suffer from theft of diesel as well
as poachers so it is vital that the farms work together with the local police to deter this from happening.
A male was evicted from his home by North Lincolnshire Homes after an application had been made through court.
Members from the Neighbourhood team located and dealt with two vehicles containing males and dogs in the
Epworth area and issued a Production notice for vehicle documents for one of the drivers and then the vehicles and
occupants were advised to leave the area.
Neighbourhood staff assisted on Sunday 3 October 2010 with the Isle Half Marathon.
With regards to Westgate Road, Belton and the issues raised concerning vehicles misusing the road. An update so far
has been that roads policing officers tasked to the location to deal with traffic matters, did identify 4 overweight
offenders, and the Casualty Reduction officer has dealt with the matters.
Please be reminded that the Police Station at Epworth is open to the public on Monday‘s and Thursdays between the
hours of 9am and 3pm. If our support officer who facilitates this is otherwise engaged then a notice on our door will
explain this and how to contact police.

The Isle of Axholme Where You Live Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall
The Drainage of the Isle (continued)
The drainage of the Cornish tin mines greatly influenced the drainage of the Isle of Axholme. The introduction of pumping engines brought about a new era in the history of the drainage of the Isle. The first pumping engine was installed at Misterton Soss after the flood of 1828. In 1837 Sir Robert Sheffield installed an engine draining Butterwick South Moor. In 1858 Bull Hassocks pumping station was opened and Dirtness in 1867. At Dirtness the engine was renewed in 1928 and the present electrically driven pumps were installed in 1952. Other pumping stations include Snow Sewer, Candy Farm, Goodcop, Tunnel Pits (one of the newest, built in 1962) and of course Keadby, the key pumping station where most of the Isle’s water is pumped into the Trent. The present six Keadby pumps date from1940 and can lift 102 million gallons a day, through thirteen and a half feet each. The area drained by Keadby pumping station is 93,430 acres. Engineers of the Trent River Board are constantly making improvements to the drainage. In 1972 the Skyers drain west of Epworth Turbary was dug to feed a small pumping station into the South Level Engine Drain’ Some of Vermuyden’s original drains are still in operation with the modification such as: the New River Torne the New Idle Drain from Idle Stop to Dirtness Dutch River to Goole some dry channels from Pilfrey Bridge to Althorpe. Other items that can be seen in connection with the history of drainage include, the old course of the River Idle west of Tunnel Pits the old course of the Don in Eastoft village, and as marked on a two and half one inch to I mile map showing its course along parish boundaries. Vermuyden’s headquarters at Santoft – on the left well set back from the road near the crossroads. Now & Then – Then & Now No. 19 By Anthony Catherall
This month and every month see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today’s images!
Joseph Bottomley the well-known photographer had his premises and studio in the High Street. He took this charming photograph in about 1903-4.
The postcard above is known to collectors as an animated postcard. In other words there are lots to see as your eyes scan over the picture. For example note the person standing in the road in front of the Red Lion. The notices and signs
on the original card outside the printing Works on the floor say ‘Estates’ while above to the right on the wall the sign says
‘Dyers’ and the man with the overall an employee has grey hair. The Pony rider may have come into town to visit Fields the Saddler, the shop to his left at No 11 High Street. Another
employee of the works with his apron and three other gentlemen were retained for the photographer to provide balance.
I took the photograph below on Sunday 13 June 2010. My bicycle leans against the newsagents as a customer leaves.

French Cinderella
European Day of Languages
On 24th September, 25 Year 9 pupils took part in the European Day of
Languages to celebrate the importance of language learning, cultural diversity and
above all, how fun learning a language can be. European Day is a popular event with many
countries taking part across the World.
Pupils took part in a variety of language based activities, including taster sessions in Spanish
and German, as well as quizzes in French.
The European food tasting session proved very popular. Pupils tasted a selection of
European food, including Swiss Gruyere, German Bockwurst and Scottish Haggis!
During the afternoon the group of pupils acted out scenes from Cendrillon (Cinderella in
French).
All staff and pupils taking part in the day were dressed in European themed outfits. Other
staff also got into the spirit, including the office and kitchen staff. Particular thanks to Mrs
Scaife, dressed as Princess Caroline of Monaco and Angie from the canteen, who was
dressed as a typical French man.
Due to the success of this second European Day of Languages, it has now become an
annual event.

The November issue of the Arrow has linked with local businesses to make
the run up to Christmas a cheaper and more pleasurable experience.
Whether you want to start (or in some cases finish) your Christmas shopping; complete DIY jobs,
pamper or treat yourself to a meal out, the Arrow has everything to save you money!
What could be more convenient than the shops that are there on our doorstop? Don‘t pass them by as if
they are somehow second rate. They are not. In fact convenience is only a part of the story as to why
they deserve our support. Here is a little food for thought...Jumping into the car and heading for that out-
of-town super store or shopping mall may seem a good idea. But it can end up a time-wasting, costly and
a frustrating experience. Time, they say, is precious. But how many hours are wasted in traffic jams, just
getting to your destination – and then driving round to find a place to park In the meantime, the pennies
you think you will save turn into pounds of extra expense.
If it‘s a friendly, personal service you are after, then there‘s nothing finer than a shop or business in the
Isle! Or maybe having someone come to you; there are plenty of mobile services out there for you to
enjoy! Such attention is a tradition that has its roots embedded in the history of each village and hamlet in
the area.
The recent economic downturn has also had an impact on the local economy, which is why it is more
important than ever to shop locally and support our local businesses. The growth of our villages in
recent years has seen an increase in facilities and business services. But they can only survive if the people
they are designed to serve support them.
Let’s face it, we’d all miss them if they were not there!
There are 3 pages full of special offers and discounts to help you along the way.

Autumn is the party conference season-and which-
ever-if any- party you are connected with-for the committed and active work-
ers especially this is often at least compulsory listening and reading, if not
compulsory attendance. We know from press coverage that it is both a re-
view of the past year (the past election), with reflective analysis on what went
wrong, and also a look ahead with hints about what will be the future course
of action. The party conference also serves as a forum to encourage and in-
spire.
Harvest is much the same. We give thanks for the past year, for some more
successful than others. I understand that for apple growers the year has been
too good, with an abundance of apples that will drive prices down. For others
it has been not so successful a year. We give thanks both the harvest from the past year, and the seeds
provided for the next round of sowing, cropping and storing. In our own gardens many will save the run-
ner bean and sunflower seeds to give the crop for next year.
So to in our own lives, we have reaped what we have sown, and for next year we will sow what we have
reaped. The decisions we have made, and the actions we have done. Harvest affirms and encourages us in
our appreciation of the world in which we live for while “earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat,
summer and winter, day and night will never fail.” (Genesis 8.22).

Epworth Buddies meet Teacher Delegation from China
We have a group of older children in school who are trained in helping other children in the playground
to find friends if they are on their own or to help solve problems. Last month a group of our Buddies
gave a presentation to a group of teachers from China about their work as playground Buddies in
school to help other children. The children went to the Educational Development Centre in Scunthorpe
to talk to the Chinese delegation. All the visitors were very impressed with the work of the pupils in
helping children resolve falling outs with each other. The children were also very well behaved as well.
Well done to Jordan Jenkinson, Alex Hodson, Sophie Vickers, Cerys Addlesee, Ellis Croxall, Eloise
Rose, Georgia Sitch, Evie Coyne, Hannah Tomlins and Lisa Pickford for taking part. You are all a credit
to the school.
Parents Maths Morning in school
We have recently held a successful morning in school when we invited parents and grandparents to
watch Maths lessons to see how the children learn in this important subject – we know ways of teach-
ing Maths can be a mystery to parents.
Evaluations completed afterwards showed everyone found the morning very helpful and enjoyable. All
parents felt more confident now to help their child with Maths, with 65% a lot more confident. 80% felt
they now knew a lot more about how we teach Maths in school, with the other 20% now knowing a
little more.
Over the year we plan to invite parents in to see other lessons in school.
With best wishes.

While debates continue about whether or not modern mums should be
‘career women’, ‘stay at home mums’ or aim to ‘have it all’ a new
survey reveals whatever work life balance they achieve, over a third of
mums in Doncaster and the Isle of Axholme feel guilty asking for help
in the home.
In the survey commissioned by MOLLY MAID more than 3,000 modern mums were asked about their
work and home-life balance. Shockingly the survey revealed that nearly three quarters of local mums are
the ones responsible for cleaning their home, while only five per cent of their spouses take on this task.
The survey also revealed that given the choice, less than seven per cent of modern mums would work full
time. However, over three quarters currently work three or more days a week, yet over half don‘t take
advantage of time saving services such as online grocery shopping.
All this domestic responsibility also puts a strain on relationships with over a third of women surveyed
stating they do not get enough help with their cleaning and over 82 percent of mums saying that the
running of their household affects their relationship with their partner in a negative way. Family time
suffers too, with a third of mums spending an hour or less of quality family time a day.
Pam Bader OBE, Chief Executive of MOLLY MAID, explained: ―Many mothers have less time to devote to
their families and households due to the pressures of modern living and the results show it can have a
negative affect on family life and relationships. It‘s surprising that even in this day and age women are still
doing the majority of the cleaning.
―It‘s easy to forget all the help that‘s available these days - whether it‘s online shopping, childminders,
gardeners or other services such as those offered by MOLLY MAID. However, services like these should
be regarded as an affordable necessity as they can help give back the precious and irreplaceable family
time, and of course all important ‗me-time‘, mums would otherwise struggle to fit in.‖
Andy and Lynne Crewe who owns the local MOLLY MAID franchise said: ―We were amazed at how many
mums weren‘t using the help available, especially considering the amount of free family time this could give
them. A MOLLY MAID is a great way to get a few extra hours back a week.‖

Remember, Remember the fifth of
November Gunpowder. treason and plot….
There is far more to remember than Guy Fawkes in
November. He is remembered because he failed to
blow up the Houses of Parliament. We have an
opportunity to remember those who didn‘t fail.
They may have died in their attempt to win, but it is
to them we owe the freedom we enjoy today.
Whilst the number of living veterans who survived
the horrors of the ―World Wars‖ decreases, the
number of veterans involved in other conflicts in-
cluding Iraq and Afghanistan increases.
As we remember those who fought all those years
ago, we remember too those who fight wars that in
many ways don‘t effect us because they are so far
away. Yet we know from our television screens,
there are soldiers who have returned badly broken
from the scene of war and many relatives who
mourn the loss of husbands, wives, sons or daugh-
ters. We salute them too.
So at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the
eleventh month, we will remember once again those
who died in the World Wars and those who have
died in conflict or training ever since.
More than that, we gather together again the fol-
lowing Sunday, November 14th in Belton All Saints
Church of England Primary School Hall at 10am for
a Community Service of Remembrance followed by
a March to the War Memorial to join the nation for
a minute‘s silence at 11am and to pledge ourselves
to do everything we can to bring peace on earth.
There are other similar gatherings throughout the
Isle.
Remember, remember the 11th & 14th of
November

News from Belton All Saints CE Primary
Peer Mentoring in school
In school we are eager to encourage pupils to
become active members of our school community.
As part of their personal and social development
programme, Year 6 pupils are involved in the
Buddying Scheme supporting Mid Day supervisors
to ensure younger pupils have safe and happy
lunchtimes. The programme involves them in
discussing bullying and conflict resolution as well as
learning to lead younger pupils in playing games.
Buddies can be clearly identified around school
wearing the red buddy neckers.
This year we have also introduced a Year 4
Playground Partnership scheme with volunteers, this
time wearing green neckers, helping to develop and
maintain friendships on the Year 3/4 playground.
Visit to Yorkshire Wildlife Park
Years 1 & 2 had the first visit out of school this year
with their trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
Linked to their topic on habitats and animals, pupils
had the opportunity to see a range of animals at
close hand. Firm favourites were the meercats,
limurs and wallabies.
Staff from the park talked to pupils about the
animals and they were given the opportunity to feed
and stroke the wallabies.
A wonderful day was had by all and pupils have
since used the trip as a stimulus for work back in
the classroom.
Josie (Y2) reported: ‗….I thought it was excellent
seeing all of the limars running and jumping about
and seeing them run to get their food. I loved
feeding the wallabies it tickled my hand when they
licked the food.‘
Scott commented: ‗…did you know that you can
hear a lion roar from five miles away?‘
Year 5/6 Homework Task
As part of the Y5/6 work on Ancient Greece this
term pupils were set a design and technology
project to complete at home. They were asked to
make a model of the Parthenon in Athens and
pupils, and parents alike, really rose to the
challenge. Fantastic models came into school
constructed from an amazing range of materials and construction kits including card, wood, clay, junk
materials, lego,…… This activity is another example of the ways in which we encourage pupils to learn
through creative subjects; researching, designing, making and evaluating their work. Pupils are currently
voting for their favourite models; however I think they should all be congratulated on their efforts.
Best wishes Sarah Groves Headteacher

Beyond the test Steering
Dear readers
You should hold the steering wheel with your hands at the ‗quarter-to three‘ or ten-to-two position. Steering
movements should be made by feeding the wheel through your hands.
You pass the wheel from one hand to the other at all times.
It sounds complicated, but this is the smoothest, safest and most natural way to control the steering. If you are not
used to steering in this way, your movements may at first feel they lack co-ordination. But it only takes practice to
develop the technique into a fluid, controlled movement. Once perfected you will find it uncomfortable to steer in
any other way.
Driving with one hand on the wheel arises simply through laziness. This gives you poor control at all times, and puts
you at a disadvantage if you need to react quickly. If, on a long drive, you find it tiring to keep both hands in the
correct place, your driving position may need adjustment.
There are many times, of course when one hand has to be taken off the wheel. Apart from changing gear, opening a
window or operating switches are common occasions. Try to do these things when travelling in a straight line and in
quiet traffic situations.
Many people let go of the wheel completely for a brief moment. How can they react if they have to take avoiding
action?
A common mistake after a turn is to let the steering‘s self-centring action spin the wheel straight. While doing this, a
driver has no control at all.
Some people hold the wheel with both hands close together at the top or the bottom. This is neither relaxing nor
appropriate for good control. Your hands should be opposite each other to allow quick steering in ether direction.
Crossing arms must be avoided control is sacrificed since crossing arms prevent more lock being added. Imagine
you misjudge a corner and halfway through you find it tightening unexpectedly. If your arms are already crossed, you
prevent yourself steering any further without a great deal of scrambling with the wheel.
Initially the wheel is turned very gently, and then the rate of rotation is slightly speeded up once the car has settled
into its cornering attitude. Applying this sensitivity means that the passengers hardly feel changes of direction.
Power steering must be treated with respect because it is all too easy for sudden steering movements on a slippery
road to cause the front wheels to break grip and start a skid. Artificial lightness should not be regarded as an
indication that a car‘s road holding is any better.
