Dear Parishioners, In the early 1960's, Monsignor John J. Flanagan, the founding pastor of St. John Brebeuf, embarked on building the present church building to replace what is now the school gymnasium. The impetus behind this building campaign was both to increase the seating capacity of the worship space due to the dramatic population explosion after new development was constructed in Niles and to better reflect the liturgical spirit of Vatican II. Monsignor Flanagan, who retired in 1974 and who went to God on December 31, 1991, oversaw the church construction. He understood the first of the conciliar documents of The Second Vatican Council, convened in 1962 by Blessed Pope John XXIII, Sacrosantum Concilium: Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (SC) which established the general principles for the reform and the promotion of sacred liturgy.

“The Church, therefore, earnestly desires that Christ’s faith-ful, when present at this mystery of faith, should not be there as strangers or silent spectators. On the contrary, through a proper appreciation of the rites and prayers they should par-ticipate knowingly, devoutly, and actively. They should be instructed by God’s word and be refreshed at the table of the Lord’s body; they should give thanks to God by offering the Immaculate Victim, not only through the hands of the priest, but also with him, they should learn to offer themselves too. Through Christ the Mediator, they should be drawn day by day into ever closer union with God and each other, so that finally God may be all in all.” “The Church earnestly desires that all the faithful be led to that full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical cele-brations which is demanded by the very nature of the litur-gy.” Monsignor Flanagan, striving to be faithful to these docu-ments, used the underlying principles and theology of this text to beautifully build the church using simply brick, mor-tar, wood, and glass. In fact, our church, because of his fore-sight, reflects the theology of the most recent document of USCCB published in 2000, Built of Living Stones: Art, Ar-chitecture, and Worship (BLS). His thoughtful implementa-tion of these documents’ has set St. John Brebeuf apart as a special place of prayer and worship. The following is a brief overview of the theology that led to the construction of the church we now enjoy.

Gathering Space or Narthex – “The gathering space helps

believers to make the transition from everyday life to the celebration of the liturgy, and after the liturgy, it helps them return to daily life to live out the mystery that has been celebrated.” (BLS) The enlarged narthex has not only become so central to our community spirit but the place where we put our faith into action. Where else would we be able to have Uncle Pete's Ministry and St. Vincent De Paul collection box for the poor? How could we ever hope to have so many other ministerial/service oriented gatherings?

Baptismal Font – Through the waters of baptism the faithful enter the life of Christ. For this reason the font was placed in the sanctuary where it could be visible and accessible to all who enter the church building. Built of Living Stones: Art, Architecture, and Worship states, “The font is a symbol of both tomb and womb; its power is the power of the triumphant cross; and baptism sets the Christian on the path to life that will never end, the “eighth day” of eternity where Christ’s reign of peace and justice is celebrated.” The faithful therefore leave the Sunday Eucharist filled with hope to live a life of sacrificial service, following the “Way of Christ” and the first disciple’s example, Mary the Mother of God.

The Nave - One of the most unusual aspects about St. John

Brebeuf Church is that it was constructed from the “sky down, not from the ground up.” The design principle is known as “post-tension Steel.” The first step in con-struction involved the erection of four red towers on top of which was placed a large steel ring. The structure was completed from top down. The tower and its upper structure, the stainless steel cross above it, plus the en-tire weight of the ceiling – all are actually pushing down on a point directly underneath the center of the church. This weight is distributed to the flying buttress on the outside of the church. The weight of the tower pushing down is held in check by four gigantic steel cables which are wrapped around the outside of the church. The outer walls are formed of many different types of stone, granite, quartz, marble, sandstone, and limestone. Bound together with mortar, these stones are symbolic of the people who comprise the parish, people of God, bound together by love of God.

The Choir - As stated in The General Instruction of the Ro-

man Missal, “The faithful and the choir should have a place that facilitates their active participation.” The church layout encourages eye contact with one another which emphasizes that “the community worships as a single body unified in faith, not simply as individuals who happen to find themselves in one place..” (BLS) “The ministers of music are most appropriately located in a place where they can be a part of the assembly and have the ability to be heard.” (BLS)

Our Church Tower needs replacement, the church needs tuck-pointing, bathrooms updated, and a new organ, and a resurfaced parking lot. Please consider supporting this worthy cause. Drodzy Parafianie, Na początku lat 60. prałat John J. Flanagan, pastor-założyciel św. Jana Brebeufa, rozpoczął budowę obecnego budynku kościoła, który zastąpił obecnie szkolne gimnazjum. Impulsem tej kampanii budowlanej było zwiększenie pojemności miejsca kultu w związku z dramatyczną eksplozją populacji w Niles, jak i lepsze odzwierciedlenie ducha liturgicznego Vaticanum II. Monsignor Flanagan, który przeszedł na emeryturę w 1974 roku i odszedł do Boga 31 grudnia 1991 roku, nadzorował budowę kościoła. Rozumiał on pierwszy z soborowych dokumentów Soboru Watykańskiego II, zwołanego w 1962 r. Przez błogosławionego papieża Jana XXIII, Sacrosantum Concilium: Konstytucja o świętej liturgii (SC), który ustalił ogólne zasady reformy i promocji świętej liturgii. „Dlatego Kościół żarliwie pragnie, aby wierni Chrystusa, obecni w tej tajemnicy wiary, nie byli tam jako obcy lub milczący widzowie. Przeciwnie, poprzez właściwe zrozumienie obrzędów i modlitw, powinni uczestniczyć, z pobożnością, świadomie i aktywnie. Powinni być Kształtowani słowem Bożym, posilaś się przy stole Ciała Pańskiego ; dziękując Bogu i ofiarując Niepokalaną Ofiarę, nie tylko przez ręce kapłana, ale wraz z Nim uczyć się także ofiarować siebie. Przez pośrednicto Chrystusa powinniśmy z każdym dniem doskonalić się w jedności z Bogiem i sobą nawzajem, aby w końcu Bóg był wszystkim we wsystkich ”. „Kościół gorąco pragnie, aby wszyscy wierni zostali doprowadzeni do pełnego, świadomego i aktywnego uczestnictwa w celebracjach liturgicznych, czego wymaga sama natura liturgii”. Monsignor Flanagan, starając się być wierny tym dokumentom, wykorzystał podstawowe zasady i teologię tego tekstu, aby pięknie zbudować kościół, używając po prostu cegły, zaprawy, drewna i szkła. W rzeczywistości nasz kościół, ze względu na jego dalekowzroczność, odzwierciedla teologię najnowszego dokumentu USCCB opublikowanego w 2000 r., Built of Living Stones: Art, Architecture, and Worship (BLS). Jego przemyślana realizacja tych dokumentów wyróżniła św. Jana Brebeufa jako szczególne miejsce modlitwy i kultu. Zbudowana z żywych kamieni: sztuki, architektury i kultu: „Chrzcielnica jest symbolem zarówno grobowca, jak i łona; płynąca moc jest mocą triumfującego krzyża; a chrzest nadaje chrześcijanom nową drogę życia, które nigdy się nie kończy, „ósmego dnia” wieczności, w którym celebrowane jest panowanie Chrystusa pokoju i sprawiedliwości. Wierni pozostawiają zatem niedzielną Eucharystię pełną nadziei na życie w służbie ofiarnej naśladując „Drogę Chrystusa” i przykład pierwszego ucznia, Maryję, Matkę Bożą.

Nawa główna - jednym z najbardziej niezwykłych aspektów kościoła św. Jana Brebeufa jest to, że został on zbudowany z „nieba w dół, a nie od podstaw”. Zasada projektowania znana jest jako „stal naprężona”. Pierwszy krok w konstrukcja polegała na wzniesieniu czterech czerwonych wież, na których umieszczono duży stalowy pierścień. Konstrukcja została ukończona z góry na dół. Wieża i jej górna konstrukcja, krzyżujący się nad nią stal nierdzewna, plus cały ciężar sufitu - wszystkie właściwie dociskają punkt bezpośrednio pod środkiem kościoła. Ciężar ten rozkłada się na latający przypór na zewnątrz kościoła. Ciężar pchającej wieży jest kontrolowany przez cztery gigantyczne stalowe kable owinięte na zewnątrz kościoła. Ściany zewnętrzne składają się z wielu różnych rodzajów kamienia, granitu, kwarcu, marmuru, piaskowca i wapienia. Związane razem z moździerzem kamienie te symbolizują lud, który stanowi parafię, lud Boży, związany miłością do Boga. Chór - jak stwierdzono w Instrukcji ogólnej mszału rzymskiego: „Wierni i chór powinni mieć miejsce ułatwiające ich aktywny udział”. Układ kościoła zachęca do wzajemnego kontaktu wzrokowego, co podkreśla, że „wspólnota czci jako całość ciało zjednoczone w wierze, nie tylko jako jednostki, które znajdują się w jednym miejscu ... ”(BLS)„ Ministrowie muzyki są najbardziej odpowiednio usytuowani w miejscu, w którym mogą być częścią zgromadzenia i mogą być słyszałem. ”(BLS) Nasza wieża kościoła wymaga wymiany, kościół wymaga wskazania, aktualizacji łazienki i potrzebujemy nowych organów i parkingu. Proszę rozważyć wsparcie tej godnej sprawy. The Gospel predicts end times; our

challenge though is to live faithfully now. St. Vincent often asked this simple question: “What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my place now? Ask yourself “What would Jesus Christ do?” and then put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent d Paul poor box so that those who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving. Christmas Gift-Sharing Program Yes, the stores are getting ready for the Christmas season so that also means that members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be in the Church vestibules this weekend with the Annual Christmas Gift-Sharing Program gift suggestion

forms. Please stop by and pick up a form. If you missed us this weekend, you still have a chance to obtain a gift suggestion form. Next weekend, Nov. 23-24 will be the last weekend the forms will be available. A special note: Be sure to use “Scotch tape” when attaching the name of the person receiving your gift (the top part of the form). Also if you have more than one package, please duplicate the label on each package. ALL GIFTS ARE TO BE RETURNED TO THE CHURCH THE WEEKENDS OF NOV. 30- DEC. 1-2 AND DEC. 8-9.
