"First World problems" is a phrase that's come into common use. It describes what

we in a country of privilege see as challenges that pale in comparison to the serious,

life-threatening problems of people in other countries. First World problems include

computer crashes that destroy all your documents, a stylist coloring your hair two

shades darker than usual, or having to send French fries back because you ordered

a salad. Yes, some are particularly challenging, but they aren't on the scale ofsurviving war or trying to afford basic daily food.

The Sadducees in today's Gospel are concerned with "First Life" problems.

They're using an earthly issue to challenge Jesus' teaching on resurrection. Jesus

doesn't engage in their game-playing; he says earthly concerns like marriage aren't

the concerns of the "second Life"-the life of resurrection. He doesn't give details

about this life, simply assuring them that God has promised it: "to God, all are

alive."Though we might not test Jesus like the Sadducees tried to, we do have questions

about resurrected life. What will it be like? Who will be there? How will it compare

to life here on earth? We try to imagine life after death with our limited minds, but

resurrected life is beyond our ability to comprehend while we're in our First Life.

We're called to trust in our covenant relationship with God-a relationship that

continues beyond death. Jesus reminds us, *'God is notthe God of the dead, but ofthe living."

We do know one thing about resurrected [ife: We'll be alive with God. And

nothing can be better than that.Janel Esker [email protected]

d e ar PAD Rf,

0(^) I was taught that eulagia are not to be giuen at funeral Masses.\'r3' Well, I'ue been to many Catlwlic funerals, and each included a

eulogy. Did the rule change?

Practice and rules vary from diocese to diocese and

even from parish to parish. However, according to the2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missa[ "At the FuneralMass there should, as a rule, be a short homily, but never

a eulogy of any kind" (382).The Order of Christian Funerals

says the same thing (14\).A homily is a talk about the Scripture readings that puts

the focus onJesus and his work of saving us from sin and

death by his resurrection. A eulory is a talk about thedeceased person-a biography of sorts. This really isn'tappropriate for t Catholic funeral Mass, which is a

celebration of the deceased's eternal life with God rather

than a celebration of his or her earthly life.Tbe arder af Christian Funerals allows a family member

or friend to speak about the deceased after Communion(170). Often referred to es words of rentem*brance, the idea is

for one person to speak for no more than a few minutes

about how the deceased person lived his or her faith.A better place for a traditional eulogy and for family and

friends to celebrate the life of the deceased person is at the

wake or at a postfuneral gathering.Fr. John Hamrogue, CSsR stt [email protected]
