We’ll leave Westlake on Friday, January 15, heading down to San Juan Capistrano, where we will have a gourmet lunch at the old train depot. After lunch, we go naval, taking a tour of the U.S.S. Midway, a retired aircraft carrier, which has been converted into a floating museum in San Diego Harbor.

We will be staying at the beautiful Grand Hyatt Regency Hotel & Spa right on Mission Bay. The hotel has been recently renovated to the tune of $65-million. A luxurious spa awaits, in addition to the magnificent grounds and views. There are a variety of eating choices available at or near the hotel.

Saturday, January 16, we head up to the quaint old gold-mining town of Julian. We will be driving the mountain roads, taking in the beauty of the January landscape. (Snow has been known to fall here in the winter, but the roads are always cleared up into the town).

After lunch at a local saloon and barbecue spot, we take a different route back that will lead us into La Jolla, the jewel of San Diego. You’ll be able to walk around town and eat dinner here on your own, or head back to the hotel, where the Hyatt has graciously provided a free shuttle for the evening to take us to and from the downtown San Diego area.

Sunday is a free day to enjoy the many tourist attractions of San Diego. Group rates will be available for the Zoo, Sea World, Wild Animal Park, or you may just roam around on your own to see Old Town, Seaport Village, Horton Plaza Shopping Plaza, or avail yourself of the Spa at the Hyatt.

That evening will be a real treat. We’ll be eating dinner at the Corvette Diner. We may be in the Porsche Club, but this place is a true throwback to the hamburger joints of the ‘50s, complete with entertaining servers, rude waitresses, dancing to Neil Sedaka and the Shirelles, and thick chocolate malts.

The cost for this weekend adventure is $180 per couple ($90 single), excluding the cost of the hotel, which you must reserve on your own. The price includes the activity fee, lunches on Friday and Saturday, dinner on Sunday, and the U.S.S. Midway tour.

To make reservations at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay, call 888-421-1442. Tell them you are with the Porsche group that has reserved a block of rooms for January 15-18. Rates range from $125-$225 depending on your selected accommodations. Parking is DIY, and it is included! Do not forget to make your hotel reservations!

Make checks payable to PCA/SBR and send to: Nancy Maletz, 2896 Woodflower St., Thousand Oaks, CA 91362. If you have questions, please contact Nancy at [email protected]

the Getty Villa in Malibu. Stroll the grounds of this beautiful recreation of a 2000-year-old country house in Italy. It houses about 44,000 works of art from the museum’s extensive collection of Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities with more than 1200 on display. View them on your own or take the guided tour. The $25 cost includes a box lunch and your activity fee. R.S.V.P. to Jeff or Rosalee soon at [email protected].

It’s time to reserve your spot at the annual Holiday Party on Saturday, December 19th at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Ventura. A big “thank you” to all those who volunteered at the Ventura Show this year, including our faithful crew who manned the Goodie Store all weekend. We met many nice folks, sold lots of merchandise and managed to recruit a few new members to the region. World Class Motoring was very appreciative of all the help you provided in the parking lots, and they plan an even bigger show next year.

Lastly, as we enter the holiday season, let’s take time to reflect on and give thanks for the many blessings we have received throughout the year. Susan and I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, and hope that you will be able to spend time with friends and family.

R & S Gruppes Visit On The Way To Ventura

By John Alfenito

Story & Photos by John Alfenito

The coincidence of our October Breakfast and the first day of the 2009 Ventura Show brought us a host of special guests and vintage 911s. Several members of the “R Gruppe” and

the “Early S Registry” organized their Ventura Show weekend to begin with a trip to Camarillo for breakfast with SBR.

Quite early, before most of our members arrived, the colorful early Porsches began assembling and took their places on the tarmac and lawn. When the meeting convened, 132 members and guests were on hand with 89 Porsches in attendance. It was quite a crowd.

President Dave Stone welcomed the dignitaries and guests, saluting the two early 911 groups from Los Angeles, acknowledging how much we all enjoyed seeing their large contingent of unique cars.

Next, Dave related the story of how SBR’s newly appointed Archivist, James Oldham, was recently involved in a very serious accident on PCH. The good news is James is okay. The bad news is, his beloved Ferrari was “totaled” by a driver who turned left in front of him, leaving James no option but a major collision. James thanked the members of the club for their warmth and support. He is quite

sad to have lost his Ferrari, but told us he’s “in the market for another one.”

Activities Co-Chair Oscar Briones promoted the upcoming calendar of SBR events. He introduced Jeffrey Merrick who

detailed the Malibu Getty Villa Tour coming up November 15. Bill Sampson plugged next week’s 33rd Annual Concours d’Elegance in Santa Barbara. Steve Kaller and Beverly Brovsky, who had been signing up members for the Casa Pacifica Kids’ Play Day, set for October 17, outlined the details of that event.

Nancy Maletz, who has organized a Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend trip to San Diego in January, urged those interested in this adventure to sign up soon. 2010’s San Diego Getaway has many sight-seeing activities planned, as well as bargain rates at a Mission Bay luxury hotel. Details are on Page 2 of this issue.

As our many visitors headed off for The Ventura Show, we concluded the meeting with several of us set to join a large group of SBR volunteers already working the Porsche gathering at the Fair Grounds. Another successful and enjoyable breakfast came to a close. =

fathers. It was a terrific event made even more special by the beautiful Porsches and their generous owners. Dave thanked all the participants for their quick response and willingness to help. SBR saved the day!

Membership Chair Janice Herndon welcomed prospective members, new members, and guests, as well as reminding everyone about the availablity of magnetic name badges from The Goodie Store.

Activitities Co-Chair Oscar Briones plugged the Holiday Party in December and the San Diego Getaway Weekend scheduled for January. More about both events elsewhere in this edition.

Michael Brovsky promoted the upcoming Casa Pacificia Play Day, scheduled for the following weekend. He reminded everyone to R.S.V.P. so that they’d have an accurate count for lunch. With more than 70 members signed up for a fun day with the Casa Pacifica kids, this event was sure to be a success.

Finally, Jeffrey & Rosalee Merrick detailed the upcoming Getty Villa Tour in Malibu. They indicated there was still some room for more folks to join the already 60+ members already signed up.

As the meeting adjourned, many were headed back to the confines of their garages to complete final preparations for the SBR concours which would follow in less than 24 hours. =

You could sense the pre-concours excitement in the air as a smaller-than-usual group of 42 participants, driving 27 Porsches, sat down for our October Santa Barbara

breakfast. Those of us attending felt a slight disadvantage, knowing that many of “the usual suspects” were in their garages, dusting and buffing their Porsches for our 33rd Annual Concours d’Elegance, which would occur the next day.

President Dave Stone welcomed the dignitaries and guests, with a special tip-of-the-hat to Archivist James Oldham, who had survived a serious accident on PCH last month. Sadly, James’s Ferrari did not survive the collision.

Dave informed the crowd that the previous evening Santa Barbara Region had come to the aid of Santa Barbara High School as it celebrated its homecoming. In prior years, the SBHS Homecoming Court had been chauffered into the football stadium by the local Corvette Club. This year, when the Corvette Club was unable to attend, SBR was contacted and several volunteers with Cabriolets stepped up. Walt Branscome brought

his 2005 Speed Yellow Boxster. Steve Mascagno arrived in his slant-nosed, turbo-look 1985 Black Cabriolet. Dick Douglass volunteered with his 1965 White 356 Cabriolet. Fritz Olenberger and his special edition 2008 Orange Boxster S was there. Mark Hermann brought his 1957 Black 356 Cabriolot. And Amil Garcia stepped up to pilot Dan Lindsay’s 2006 Blue Turquoise Carrera S (pictorial coverage on Page 32). Each Porsche drove a Homecoming Princess around the running track to the main bleacher area, where the young women were met by their

This year’s Gimmick Rally was planned and hosted by Doreen Pankow & Ted Lighthizer, two young at heart

retirees with nothing better to do than get together with 42 of their SBR Porsche buddies for driving, competitive games-manship, and some good food and con-versation. A “gimmick rally” consists of a set of clues uniquely designed to baffle drivers and their hapless navigators while they negotiate a simple, defined route. As one member said, “It’s like doing a crossword puzzle on the road.”

The calendar read Fall but the tempera-tures were triple-digit as driver check-in was done by Ted Lighthizer, while Oscar Briones secured the release forms. Do-reen Pankow, absent at the driver check-in, was hard at work at Arroyo Verde Park, Ventura, securing the necessary picnic tables and eating space for the group’s catered barbecue lunch.

Twenty-two Porsches drove the event with models ranging from Bill & Rose-mary Sampson’s classic 356-C Coupe to Jeff Parker & Becky Lundberg’s almost new 2007 GT3. Nick & Olga Liakas in their white 996 Turbo provided “lead car” guid-ance, while Mike Turek and Janice Hern-don drove Mike’s beautiful silver 993 in the “sweep car” role, in case anyone ex-perienced any breakdown issues. We are pleased to report no mechanical prob-lems or traffic citations visited this year’s rally - unlike last year.

We started up and over the Malibu hills enjoying uphill twisties along with stun-

ning views of the Santa Monica Mountain Range via famous Mulholland Drive. We passed Paramount Ranch where many of Hollywood’s Westerns of the 40’s and 50’s were filmed. It’s a cool place to visit and still has the Hollywood western town stage-fronts with an information center manned by the U.S. Parks Service to pro-vide historical information on the ranch and its adjacent area. The Paramount Ranch was also the site of a sports-car road racing track used to make racing films in the 50s. The area’s rich history, numerous landmarks, and local roads provided over a dozen questions for the group, most of which were answered correctly. At Kanan-Dume Road, the rally route headed south

toward the cool, sparkling blue water of the Pacific Ocean, a welcome relief from the triple-digit heat of the day. We were now on PCH heading toward Malibu with numerous questions on the beaches and stops along this beautiful section of Cali-fornia’s coastline. We continued up PCH passing Pt. Mugu and the Naval Air Sta-tion, then through the back roads of Ox-nard along Harbor Boulevard onward to Arroyo Verde Park.

Around noon, the rally had made its way to Day Road (the final question) and the entrance to Arroyo Verde Park in Ven-tura. After parking all the Porsches In a Le Mans start formation, we all sat down for a delicious barbecue lunch with all

the fixings. The caterer for this event was Aaron Johnson’s Q-Time Barbeque in Ojai, (805) 798-2138.

After lunch, it was time to grade the group’s answers, and find out who the lucky winners would be. This year, we had a podium finish for the top three teams with the most correct answers in our 75-question quiz.

Bill & Rosemary Sampson placed first with 64 correct, and took home a $100 gift certificate from Performance Prod-ucts. With 61 correct in second place, Jeff Parker & Becky Lundberg won a $75 certificate. Third place, also with 61 right, was awarded to George Mearce & Diana Wissman, who received a $50 gift certifi-cate. Tie-breaker questions were needed to determine second and third. The final question: “What is the correct spelling of Porsche’s new four-door sedan?” The an-swer, of course, was “Panamera.” Perfor-mance Products, a long time advertiser in Der Auspuff and provider of quality OEM and Performance parts for Porsche vehi-cles, was very generous to provide prizes for our winners. Additional sponsorship of this year’s rally was provided by Rus-nak Auto Group in Westlake Village. Think

of them when service or a new Porsche is needed.

Some of our newer members also par-ticipated in their first SBR event: Mary Ann Pare with her brother Danny Farrell, George Mearce with Diana Wissman, and Phil & Linda Reese, who also recently re-joined PCA/SBR. Phil was president of our region in the mid-‘70s when there were fewer than 100 members. When Phil & Linda returned for our 45th Anniversary Celebration in July, they were amazed at how large it had grown. The Reeses went out and purchased a new 997 Cabriolet and rejoined the club!

If you would like to organize and host a future SBR event, please contact Ted & Doreen at [email protected] They will be 2010’s Activities Co-Chairs and look forward to providing fun and inter-esting events with your help. An addition-al source of SBR information is the club’s website www.pcasb.org, where you can find back issues of Der Auspuff and com-plete information on upcoming events. President: At the last minute when the Corvette Club was unable to assist Santa Barbara High School at their homecoming event on October 9, the Santa Barbara Region drove in to save the day. Six SBR volunteer cabriolet and Boxster drivers transported the Homecoming Princesses around the track in style that night. A big thank you goes to drivers Walt Branscome, Dick Douglass, Amil Garcia, Mark Hermann (Tom’s son), Steve Mascagno and Fritz Olenberger. Ray Jordan took photos as did Dan Lindsay, who also provided one of the cars. Thank you Janice Herndon for coordinating the event. This was an excellent example of how our region supports the community.

Plans are progressing for the Holiday Party. Hors d’oeuvres, menu, and table linens have been selected. Nick Liakas has volunteered to provide music for dining

and dancing. John Alfenito is working on a DVD of the year’s events to add to the program.

Old Business: A big thank you goes to all who helped out at the Ventura Show this year. World Class Motoring was very appreciative of the help and the Goodie Store sold $986 in merchandise. Plus, three new SBR members were signed up.

The Detail Clinic was well attended by 35 eager people. Thank you Santa Barbara Auto Group for hosting the event at your facility and providing lunch.

An activities meeting was held to discuss and finalize upcoming events for 2010. The new year’s schedule is coming together.

Lavaggio Auto Detailing, a Der Auspuff advertiser, had their Grand Opening with many SBR members in attendance. We wish them much luck with their new endeavor.

New Business: The club will be contacting the Red Cross to discuss the possibility of partnering with them in using the Lake Sherwood Country Club as our 2010 concours venue.

December 12th is the date for the televised check presentation to the Unity Shoppe, one of our 2009 charities.

A motion was made and passed to authorize $500 to buy gifts to be used as raffle prizes at this year’s Holiday Party with all proceeds donated to charity.

Meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.

33rd Annual Concours d’Elegance By The SeaOctober 11, 2009 • Santa Barbara City College

By Bill Sampson

At zero- dark-thirty on Sunday morning, they crept in on silent feet, albeit with throaty exhaust

notes. Well before dawn, Porsches of all descriptions and their dutiful custodians gathered to prepare the concours field at Santa Barbara City College for the 33rd Annual Concours d’Elegance by the Sea, presented by the Santa Barbara Region of the Porsche Club of America. Under the direction of overseer, Dave “Bagel Boy” Mosesson, region members responded to the call of duty and ably registered, parked, and hosted 40 judged, 27 displayed Porsches and one soccer mom van (a Cayenne S).

By 8:00 a.m. participants were busy cleaning and preparing their vehicles for judging, which commenced at 10:00 a.m. The Porsche marque was represented by everything from a 1956 Speedster, owned by the same person for 42 years, to a 2004 Carrera GT with 21st century technology and power to match. Chief Judge Carolyn Ewbank had her crew of 22 on the “green” shortly after the appointed hour. A critical but kindly eye was cast upon the imperfections of our favorite automobiles.

Shortly after the supply of morning coffee and bagels was exhausted, leading region member and esteemed salesperson Walt Branscome of event sponsor Santa Barbara Auto Group arrived with not only a display of new cars, but with additional refreshments and items donated by that dealership for the silent auction. Income from that auction augmented that from

two raffles. The grand prize for the day, in one of the raffles, was a two -day performance driving course at the Porsche North America track in Alabama donated by PCNA. Ticket sales were fast and furious. A variety of items were available in the second raffle, although what could possibly match the first? Proceeds from this sale as well as this event and others will be donated to the region’s 2009 designated charities: Unity Shoppe and Casa Pacifica.

Somehow your author learned not only what a “playlist” is, but how to prepare one on an absolutely tiny and totally mysterious electronic device. Thanks to sound equipment donated and run by region member Des Warren, an eclectic assortment of music from that list was played throughout the day, interrupted only by announcements from the chair. We in Santa Barbara like to think that music helps keep our cars cleaner.

By mid-afternoon, the Angels had completed their

well-deserved comeback against the hated Red Sox, and, better yet, the judging crew had completed its appointed rounds. The judges were recognized and applauded for the donation of their time and skills, and presented with customized

gifts. All the hard-working volunteers, led by the hardest worker, Jeanette Bassett, were also thanked for their hours of service.

The climax, of course, was the presentation of class winners and division Best of Show awards. The smiles brightened the somewhat overcast afternoon. [Author’s note: we denizens of coastal California love the overcast. It is

lovely beneath it, keeping the wind and traffic manageable. But, I digress.] The division winners had the biggest smiles and retired from the “stage” with crystal appropriate to the effort required to emerge victorious in such a contest. A contest new to this event was a People’s Choice Award for the best display. The

PSDS-bound John McNair

region encouraged entrants to display with their cars trophies won, restoration photo books, period correct automobilia, original stickers, anything that told an extra story about the car and/or its owner that would not cost points when the car was judged. Ballots were distributed to all who brought either a judged or displayed car. The proud winner was Ron Cook for his beautiful Irish Green 1968 912 Targa - a mostly original car in astounding condition. A final but most important transaction remained. In what is surely poetic justice, the person who undoubtedly most wanted the high performance driving course held the winning ticket. John McNair may well have started working with wife Jeanne

on reservations for Birmingham before leaving their stations at The Goodie Store.

President Dave Stone thanked the many who made a wonderful day possible, and we headed home, glad once again to be in marvelous vehicles in such a beautiful area. =

The Launch ofThe Porsche Panamera

Under cover

The historical Porsche lineup

The Santa Barbara Auto Group unveiled the new Panamera on October 18, 2009 at the Polo Grounds in Carpinteria. The gala event was promoted as a unique opportunity in

a glamorous setting for a “hands on” experience, coupled with a national polo championship match to follow the rollout. While more than 100 SBR members were in attendance, arriving in the expected outstanding collection of 56 Porsche models, not one polo pony made an appearance as the match was scrubbed due to wet ground conditions.

Walt Branscome and other members of the SBAG team hosted the event and were extremely cordial and hospitable, as always. The 56 Porsches were parked on the lush lawn facing the entrance to the clubhouse, and the guests were greeted with gifts. Greetings among the SBR members were exchanged, and the crowd proceeded to the patio that overlooks the manicured lawns of the main polo field.

To our collective delight, champagne toasts preceded a delicious lunch. At the conclusion of the meal, a parade of heritage Porsche models was announced and everyone’s attention focused on the slow moving vehicles that entered on the south end of the lawn. Kent Bodin led the procession in his 356, followed by Bob Roe in his 911 SC and Janice Herndon in her 911 Carrera. The fourth Porsche in the lineup was the star of the show, the new Panamera.

The model on display was the Panamera 4S; the S and Turbo are also now available. The crowd’s reaction was one of delight and admiration. After a brief introduction, our members were invited to experience the new 4-door sedan firsthand. Dozens seized on the opportunity to sample its interior luxury and exterior resemblance to Porsches past. There were lots of questions posed to Walt and his associates, and interest in the Panamera was significant. Conversations were focused on the clear design allegiance to Porsche history, the engineering achievements and mechanical specifications of the newest family member. The overwhelming reaction was one of great acceptance.

It was a wonderful way to spend a beautiful afternoon – great food, great cars and great friends. We offer a special thanks to the Santa Barbara Auto Group and to Walt Branscome for making it all happen. =

Imagine that you could give to children, who have no families, a day of joy and friendship. On a beautiful Southern California day, close to 100 members of the Santa Barbara Region

experienced such an event with the children of Casa Pacifica. Casa Pacifica in Camarillo is a Children’s Crisis Care Shelter

providing hope and help for those from ages one to eighteen. SBR selected Casa Pacifica and the Santa Barbara Unity Shoppe as our designated charities for 2009. The region has been raising money all year through raffles, silent auctions, and pancake breakfasts to benefit our charities. We also went door-to-door, asking businesses to donate clothing, toys, electronics and items that we could give as presents to these children for this event. On October 17, our members gladly and enthusiastically participated in a day of sharing with and giving to 43 children residing at Casa Pacifica.

Our caravan of Porsches invaded the sprawling Casa Pacifica complex and we encircled the playground area. Immediately, several of the kids expressed extreme interest in the properties of the various Porsche models. Sue Kinsling and Dave Mosesson displayed and explained the operation of their turbos, while Rich Shaw discussed the mid-ship placement of the engine in his Boxster.

We organized a BBQ lunch for close to 200 children, staff, and club members. Mike & Karen Turek, along with Mike Pomerantz, staffed the BBQ pit, overcoming initial problems lighting the grill. They cooked for a couple of hours over the high heat, preparing hot dogs and hamburgers for everyone. Toni Briones, Doreen

Pankow, Susan Stone and Olga Liakas laid out all the trimmings, and hosted the arriving hungry residents and visitors.

Louw & Charmaine Jacobs and their children brought wood cutouts and tools to build 25 birdhouses. The children provided the labor and the paint, and the Jacobs’ craft project was the big hit of the day. There was also face and nail painting. Paige Kinsling handled the face art, and Anita Banke brought Beanie Babies for the children. Victoria Lundberg, Becky Lundberg, and Devon & Micaela Parker made bracelets with the kids and also did scratch-off art.

Lunch was served at 11:30 a.m., and it was heartwarming to see the smiles on the residents’ faces as we all gathered together at the numerous picnic tables. There was lots of conversation among Casa Pacifica staff, their wards and our members. When lunch was over, it was time for music.

Entertainment was at first provided by a few of the children, who, one at a time, took the microphone and sang their favorite songs. The status of the performers significantly improved as internationally known singers/songwriters/performers arrived with their families to join our efforts. Grammy winner and Academy Award nominee Stephen Bishop sang his songs “On and On” and the theme from the movie “Tootsie.” David Palmer (of the Rod Stewart band) brought his daughter, Paris, who helped the children make bracelets and key rings.

The Santa Barbara Region’s R.U.F. Committee has visited and enjoyed many entertaining, educational

and historic sites during its four-year existence. Every once in a while, it is pleasantly surprised when one of its destinations turns out to be a real gem. This was certainly the case on September 17, 2009 when 14 members traveled to Lompoc to “discover” one such gem: The Lompoc Valley Historical Society.

The group departed from the Sears parking lot in Santa Barbara at 9:45 a.m. and headed north on Hwy 101 towards Buellton. The pleasant drive along Santa Rosa Road provided magnificent views of all the established and newly planted vineyards as well as several walnut groves. The day’s destination was in the heart of what is now downtown Lompoc district, and after about a one-hour drive time the R.U.F.ians arrived in their eight gleaming Porsches.

The Lompoc Valley Historical Society was founded on September 5, 1964. The Society is located in the Fabing-McKay-Spanne House located at 207 North L Street. The home is fully furnished in the style of the early 1900s. When one first steps into the formal parlor, one is whisked back to a simpler time and place, before the existence of television, radio, cell phones, iPods, game-boys, etc. The house and its contents reflect a time of enlightenment and creativity - a time of simple dignity and pleasures.

The Victorian house (built in 1875) and its adjacent four museum buildings (housing the Society’s offices, a blacksmith shop, the

reference library, and the carriage house) were bought for $15,000.00 (financed by a 10-year loan that was repaid in eight years) by the Society in 1968. A gallery on the lower floor of the Lompoc Museum is also maintained by the Society.

R.U.F.ians Find Gem In LompocBy Nicolas Liakas

Photos by Nicolas Liakas

Carolyn Strobell of the Society acted as our docent. The tour of the house was punctuated with personal recollections and oral history passed down from her ancestors. Carolyn is the sixth generation of her family to be born, raised and reside in Lompoc. Her insight was priceless. She took time to describe

the exceptional collection of furniture, clothing, china, appliances, tools, and assorted other items all of which date to the turn of the last century. Of special interest to many in attendance was the large collection of dolls and their

accessories. All of the above are impeccably maintained and preserved by Carolyn and her associates.

The tour of the house and the four adjoining museums was followed by a picnic lunch on the patio nestled between the aforesaid structures. The docents had prepared coffee,

cookies, and pitchers of water for the diners. The crowning touch was the cake baked by our own Anita Banke that everyone wolfed down as dessert.

Yet another great R.U.F. day-long adventure came to an end as half the group headed south on the 101 while the other half traveled over the Harris Grade to Los Alamos and then Foxen Cyn Road towards Santa Barbara. It was day filled with great drives and fabulous history lessons. =

Everyone who participated left knowing they did something much more important than donating money: we donated ourselves to these children. Natalie, who lives at Casa Pacifica wrote, “You believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. You saved my life.” These are the most wonderful children. We were truly honored to have the chance to spend the day with them, just to say, “We care about you.”

I personally want to thank everyone who participated in this day, especially Michael & Beverly Brovsky, who helped me so much in bringing this day together. For me personally, this is a day to be thankful for and to always remember.

Editor’s Note: Our region is blessed with so many members who care about our community, and who provide generous physical and fiscal support to those in need. The Casa Pacifica event would not have been so successful were it not for the extremely generous support and sponsorship of Michael & Beverly Brovsky and Steve & Janet Kaller. We thank them for their dedication. =

...the last word

This story begins with an email from a Santa Barbara High School Junior requesting our help with their homecoming celebration scheduled a week away. For the past several

years, SBHS had been assisted by the local Corvette Club, whose members had driven the princesses around the track in their cars for presentation to the crowd at the homecoming game. But, at the last minute, the Corvette Club informed the school that they could not assist them this year.

After a pleasant conversation with a very nice young lady representing the school, we decided that SBR would lend a hand. Six volunteers were quickly recruited, and Membership Chair Janice Herndon, acting as liaison and event coordinator, ensured the vehicles and drivers arrived on time and at the proper spot. Ray Jordan volunteered to take the photos to document the event.

The parade of lovely princesses riding in six beautiful Porsches was a sight to behold. The announcer described each car and named our region’s drivers. As the cars stopped in front of the grandstands, the young ladies were escorted onto the field by their proud fathers. Ashley Contreras, who was driven by Walt Branscome, was named Homecoming Queen. I’m told the princesses thoroughly enjoyed their lap around the field in those beautiful cars.

Thanks to our drivers for a job well done. They were: Walt Branscome, Dick Douglass, Amil Garcia, Mark Hermann, Steve Mascagno and Fritz Olenberger. Special thanks also go to Ray Jordan and Dan Lindsay for the photos you see, and to Janice Herndon for her exceptional job coordinating this special event. Your willingness to assist the students of Santa Barbara High School on such short notice was very much appreciated by everyone involved. SBR saved the day! =
