WHO WE ARE

08 13MARINE CORPS COMMUNITY SERVICES // IWAKUNI, JAPAN

Well it ’s that time of year again, the weather is shif ting to cooler temperatures and the holidays are quickly approaching. We had a variety of wonder ful events over the past month to include the Color Run, the Special Olympics, Navy Ball, October Festival, the Fall Bazaar and every kid’s favorite the Mini Ball; I think everyone really enjoyed these activities. Please accept special thanks from the CO and myself to all of you that made these events a success. November is also going to be a busy month as we muster our resources to celebrate the Marine Corps Bir thday.

This year’s celebration on November 6, 7 and 8 marks the 239th bir thday of the Marine Corps. We have one major change to this year’s ball, the Uniform Pageant will take place on the Parade Deck on November 5, so please come out and enjoy the show. This annual celebration provides the oppor tunity to reflect on Corps Values and Marine Corps history. The Ball is also a great time to strut those Dress Blues and for the ladies to dress up and be pampered for an evening.

On November 27, Thanksgiving will allow the community to spend quality time with one another over traditional and delicious food. If you’re not the savviest of cooks, but still want to enjoy a per fectly prepared holiday meal, we’ve got you covered. Club Iwakuni will of fer Holiday Meals to Go, and KFC will of fer full Holiday Turkey Meals. You also have the oppor tunity to avoid doing dishes altogether by visiting the Thanksgiving Day Buf fet at Club Iwakuni.

With the approaching holidays comes the oppor tunity to indulge in many tempting treats and lavish meals. Avoid get ting out of shape by at tending Semper Fit’s Turkey Burn to quickly manage any additional calories consumed over Thanksgiving. The Jingle Bell Jog will be another oppor tunity to display your holiday spirit , eat lots of great free food and get a good workout while you’re at it .

Mark your calendars for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, which will take place on November 29. This tradition allows the community to enjoy free hot cocoa, cider and cookies while spreading holiday cheer. Oh and for the kids don’t forget the visit by Santa who will be paying us a visit with a big Ho, Ho, Ho! Per formances from the local community and prizes are yet another draw to this annual event that brings our community together to view the illumination of the tree.

The holidays are a great oppor tunity to bring our community together in a time of joy and function as a family. I hope each and every one of you takes advantage of our many activities, which can help bat tle holiday blues and make our community even stronger. Have a safe and happy holidays

Holiday Side Dish:

Hard Squash Ruby Crowns

Hard Squash

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

With the holiday season right around the

corner, we begin to think of the warm

“comfort” foods that we often ate at holiday

and family gatherings. Squash was always

a part of these gatherings, whether it was

spaghetti squash, butternut or acorn,

squash always made its way to our table!

Readily available at the commissary or out

in town, here are some tips for purchasing

and preparing hard squash that will help

you get the most for your money:

Selection: Choose hard-shelled squashes with no nicks or signs of spoilage or mold. Tan butternut should show no tinge of green. Green acorns should have some orange color. Hard squashes will keep in a cool (not refrigerated) place for up to 3 weeks.

Preparation: Peel and seed butternut squash. Cut acorn squashes in halves lengthwise. Scrape out seeds and fibers with a spoon.

This dish is both easy to make and rather healthy. Try it this holiday season as a side dish for anytime you may be entertaining.

INGREDIENTS:

Acorn Squash 3 each

Butternut Squash ¾ pound

Cranberries, Fresh 1½ cups

Raspberry Jam 3 tablespoons

Honey 1 tablespoon

Butter 4 teaspoons

Salt and White Pepper to Taste

METHOD:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Cut acorn squash in half and remove seeds. Dice butternut squash into ¼ inch cubes.

3. Blanch butternut in boiling salted water for 2 minutes, or until tender. Drain. Bake acorn squash 30 minutes or until tender.

4. In a separate pot, sauté cranberries until they start to pop, 2 – 3 minutes. Drain and combine with butternut.

5. In a small sauté pan heat the jam and honey until they bubble. To these, add butter, salt and white pepper.

6. Combine the butternut and jam mixture; spoon into the cooked acorn squash halves. Place stuffed squash halves in casserole dish or sheet pan and bake 15 minutes.

7. Enjoy!

“QUOTABLE QUOTES”

I went into a McDonald’s yesterday and said, “I’d like some fries.” The girl at the counter said, “Would you like

If you're looking for turkey and stuffing in the Japanese supermarkets this November, you won't find it. The American style of the holiday isn't celebrated in Japan. You won't see paper pin-ups of harvest baskets taped to store windows or gold and brown colored decorations. But Japan does have its own version of the holiday.

Called Labor Thanksgiving Day (Kinro kansha no hi (勤労感謝の日)), it is celebrated on November 23. While America's holiday is rather vague in what you are thankful for (good health, having a job, and so on), the Japanese version is a bit more specific: the purpose is to give thanks to the workers and celebrate labor and production.

Much like the origins of the American holiday, Japan's Thanksgiving originally began as a harvest celebration that started as far back as the 660s BC. It was to celebrate the farmers and workers who brought in the year's bountiful crops. The Emperor would then sample the first rice of the year, and dedicate it to the gods.

When Japan's constitution changed after World War II to expand on human rights, the modern version of the ancient festival was invented. Although it doesn't have the pomp and circumstance of the American Thanksgiving (as well as the feasts), events and small celebrations are held throughout the country. It isn't uncommon for school children to give drawings or small tokens of thanks to the staff at the local police box for keeping them safe.

Because it is a national holiday, many of the government services and schools are closed, although most businesses are open.

Culture Day (Bunka no Hi (文化の日)), is a national holiday held on November 3 to promote culture and celebrate the arts and academic endeavors. There are usually museum and art exhibits, parades, and award ceremonies for artists and scholars. Scientific achievements are often announced on this day as well. The Emperor also awards the Order Of Culture, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Imperial Family. It is given to individuals who have made significant advancements in science, art, or culture. The Apollo 11 astronauts were given this award when they returned from their successful mission to the moon.

While these two holidays may be light on festivities, they are a great opportunity for Japanese and American friends to exchange insights into one another's culture and traditions. It's easy to get lost in the food aspect of Thanksgiving, but it is a good chance to

show your Japanese friends what you are thankful for.

Culture Day would be a good time to reflect on the positive things your country has done to advance humanity.

Don't forget to give a kind word to a store employee or co-worker on November 23. I'm sure they will appreciate it.

TUN TAVERNREVISITING 1775

by Nikki Bennett

Page 22: November 2014 Preview

Marines all over the world celebrate November 10 as the birthday of the Marine Corps. They toast the place where it all started: the Tun

Tavern in Philadelphia, a name which is forever linked with the Corps. But few know the history of the humble meeting place where the first Marine recruitment was held.Samuel Carpenter was born in England in 1649. His father, the Sheriff of Horsham, was murdered when Samuel was in his early twenties. Not long after this tragedy the young Samuel became a Quaker and moved to Barbados, where he built up a small fortune. As a Quaker, however, (and somewhat ironically) he was fined more than once for refusing to send men with arms for military service. He left Barbados, settled in Philadelphia, and eventually became a Deputy Governor of colonial Pennsylvania.Since he was immeasurably wealthy, he bought a lot that stretched for several blocks, ending at what was then called Ton Alley. He built several warehous-es and a wharf on this lot. The wharf (appropriately named "Carpenter's Wharf") was the first of its kind in Philadelphia and later expanded into what is known today as "Penn's Landing."Mr. Carpenter also built a mansion for himself and his family, and several other buildings including, in 1685, the Tun Tavern brew house ("tun" being the old English word for a container of beer.) The Tun Tavern is tradi-tionally known as the first brew house in Philadelphia, and was famed for its excellent selection of beer and ale.

Known for its hospitality and food ("Peggy Mulligan's Red Hot Beef Steak Club" was the name of the restau-rant added in the 1740's) the Tun Tavern became a meet-ing place for several groups. The St. George Society, the Grand Lodge of the Masonic Temple, St. John's No. 1 Lodge and the St. Andrews Society all held meetings at the tavern. Benjamin Franklin used it as his recruiting station for the Pennsylvania Militia. The 1st and 2nd Continental Congress even met there from time to time. The Tun Tavern was such a well-known meeting place that, when the Continental Congress decided to form the Continental Marines (now known as the US Marine Corps), it seemed perfectly reasonable to everyone that recruitment for the Marines should be set up there as well. On November 10, 1775, Robert Mulligan, the then proprietor of the establishment, was commissioned by an act of Congress to raise the first two battalions of Marines. Recruitment was held at the tavern, and the rest is history. Today, Marines around the world cel-ebrate the birthday and birthplace of the Marine Corps on November 10 remembering its humble beginnings in a tavern on a wharf in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, in 1781 the tavern burned down and was not rebuilt. Interstate 95 now covers the area where the Tun Tavern once proudly stood, but its likeness still graces countless Marine Corps balls, and visitors to the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Virginia can even dine in a replica of the Tun Tavern, built right into the museum itself.

PROFESSIONAL MILITARY EDUCATION

Education is the process by which knowledge is attained in order to develop analytical skills and critical thinking capability to enable

Marines to adapt quickly in any environment; as defined per MCO 1553.4B.Unlike any other Professional Military Education has multiple meanings as one can attest but as defined it is the reference that identifies an in-depth breakdown of enlisted and officer PME requirements. There are other objectives through commands aboard MCAS Iwakuni via local PME programs. Every command has the responsibility to afford and provide PME opportunities to its Marines of note each commander has his own philosophy on what they deem for their prescribed mission essential tasks list. The Marine Corps PME program consists of resident instruction, distance education, professional self-study, and the Marine Corps Professional Reading Program. Everyone has different PME requirements and variances within its respective Training and Readiness Manual, military occupational specialty road maps, and various PME that TECOM provides. My interpretation and belief is that the Marine Corps requires its Marines to take Professional Military Education of note officers are required to complete Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS) and Command and Staff College (CSC) distance education programs to instill and assist with a self-paced concept on the methodology, curriculum and warfighting philosophy.

All Marines should strive to accept responsibility and must be willing to take leadership opportunities within the unit and develop subordinates. It is critical to grow personally and professionally. Through attending and completing PME one gains experience by executing the objectives which attribute and will provide and form the basis of those key staff roles and responsibilities. Most importantly the Marines contributions to the force at all levels in the command and overall growing to be versatile when being assigned to any unit within the MAGTF.Amongst services and support aboard MCAS Iwakuni, there are plenty of resources available that are provided to support commands PME requirements. These are just a few:• Marine Corps Community Services charters buses

for rent to conduct PMEs.• Station Motor Transpor t Division can be

coordinated via units’ chain of command by formal request.

• Marine & Family Services Center at Bldg. #411 hosts events and has volunteers that provide other forms of PME to the individual military member and sections depending on the number to facilitate.

These opportunities should be exploited and are a great support group in making an experience easier for any unit’s transportation to and from your destination.

In concert this is a positive in order to provide those guidelines. It's a Marines responsibility to ensure that they adhere and apply the fundamentals and principles of professional military education and their success measured by leadership inputs with profound results. Continued process improvement and application will challenge the values of one’s technical competence, excellence, respect, loyalty, duty, courage, and personal integrity on practicing, being good stewards and applying ourselves professionally to these programs. Through knowledge we gain understanding, by applying ourselves we gain experience; a quote from Genghis Khan, “Without the vision of a goal, a man cannot manage his own life, much less the lives of others…The ancients had a saying: Unity of purpose is a fortune in affliction.” Have a vision on what Professional Military Education can do for you in order to affect and educate others. In summary, it is important that we are all studious and exploit continued education through our military careers regardless of rank, years in service and or status. This will assist us in attaining sound military judgment and goals set forth by the Marine Corps PME program. We are military professionals with distinct characteristics but must possess a thorough knowledge in the art and science of war first and foremost. We must embrace our contributions, by completing, instilling, teaching, and providing our Marines with the necessary decision making tools so that they can succeed us as leaders and continue to improve our Corps for years to come in any situation whether in garrison, pre-deployment training and during wartime contingencies!

M.C. Perry Elementary will

Matthew Adams, a sixth grader in Mrs. Elder’s class, sums up the excitement that M.C. Perry students feel about the Book-It reading program from Pizza Hut. “Ever heard of the Book-It program? If not, let me explain! If you’re a student at M. C. Perry Elementary School and if you read at least two books a month around your lexile level, at the end of the month, you’ll get a FREE personal pan pizza coupon!! That’s right!! Free!! Not for Burger King!! Not for Taco Bell!! But for Pizza Hut with your choice of toppings on it!! So if you have no money in your pocket and you want some pizza, get some books and start reading!”

M.C. Perry Elementary begins the Pizza Hut Book- It program in October. The program runs from October 1- March 31. Classroom teachers will send home a letter as soon

as materials arrive. This is the third year for M.C. Perry kindergarten through sixth grade students to participate. The school is proud to be the first elementary school in the Pacific to participate in this incentive program. Pizza Hut Book-It has been in the States since 1984. This is an exciting 30 year mark of the company supporting literacy.

The Book –It website, www.bookitprogram.com/parents/, states the only way to get better at reading is to do it. The Pizza Hut Book- It! Program motivates children to read more by rewarding them for their reading accomplishments. It can be used to enhance programs that teach children how to read, support comprehension and intervention programs, and encourage parents to spend more time reading with their children at home.

Parents, please make the commitment to read to or with your kids daily for at least 20 minutes. This will set the stage for them to read because they want to, not because they have to. If children develop an intrinsic motivation to read they will become lifelong readers. The following is from an unknown source, but gives a great mathematical perspective to the value of reading each night:

WHY CAN’T I SKIP MY 20 MINUTES OF READING

TONIGHT?LET’S FIGURE IT OUT, MATHEMATICALLY!

Student A reads 20 minutes five nights of every week.

Student B reads only 4 minutes a night or not at all.

STEP 1: MULTIPLY MINUTES A NIGHT X 5 TIMES EACH WEEK

Student A reads 20 minutes X 5 times a week = 100 minutes a week.

Student B reads 4 minutes X 5 times a week = 20 minutes a week.

STEP 2: MULTIPLY MINUTES A WEEK TIMES 4 WEEKS EACH MONTH

Student A reads 400 minutes a month.

Student B reads 80 minutes per month or less.

STEP 3: MULTIPLY MINUTES A MONTH X 9 MONTHS IN A SCHOOL YEAR

Student A reads 3600 minutes a school year.

Student B reads 720 minutes or less in a school year.

Student A practices reading the equivalent of 10 whole school days a year.

Student B gets the equivalent of only 2 school days or less of reading practice.

BY THE END OF 6TH GRADE IF STUDENT A & STUDENT B

MAINTAIN THE SAME READING HABITS:Student A will have read the equivalent

of 60 whole school days.

Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 days of school or less.

SOME QUESTIONS TO PONDER:Which student would you expect to

read better?

Which student would you expect to know more?

Which student would you expect to write more?

HOPEFULLY THIS INFORMATION WILL ENCOURAGE FAMILIES TO MAKE READING NIGHTLY A

PRIORITY!

ACCORDING TO SOME OTHER M.C. PERRY STUDENTS BOOK-IT IS A TOP-NOTCH PROGRAM!

HAPPY READING!

SOPHIA Third Grader in Mrs. Pruitt’s class “It was fun to make reports about the book I read and do diagrams. I did this for two years and it is a lot of fun. My favorite part was when you get your ticket to buy a pizza!

TARA Fourth Grader in Mrs. Wilson’s class “Book-It is fun because you choose different books and your own style each time. You get to read a lot of books, if you love reading like me!”

RYAN Fifth Grader in Mrs. Waugh’s class “I already really like to read. Reading is spontaneously awesome. The Book-It pizza certificate is another fantastic reason to read!”

PEARL Sixth Grader in Mrs. Elder’s class “I enjoy the Book-It program. I love to read, but this gives me extra motivation. other kids love it too, because how could they not? Free pizza is always good, right?”

If you are interested in additional information to help your child with reading, please contact one of Perry’s literacy support specialists: Teena Livengood at [email protected] or Mary Whiteside at [email protected].

M.C. Perry Elementary would like to thank Pizza Hut and Mr. Buyes for their support!

THE MINUTES READ OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL ARE WHAT MAKE THE

DIFFERENCE.

“I'm thankful for the wonderful people and culture of

Japan, and the roads for bike riding in Iwakuni, which

are among the best I've experienced in the world.”

-Chris Sandmel

“We are thankful for the extremely

gracious and helpful Japanese locals

who are always ready to lend a hand

or give directions when they see

us looking lost off base! They have

shown more kindness to us than any

other culture we've experienced.”

- Stephanie Wasson

“Iwakuni is by far the best place I’ve ever lived. I am

thankful for the opportunity to live in a country that

is clean, safe, quiet, and rich in culture, tradition and

history. My husband and I live “out in town”, in a

wonderful neighborhood that contains a yochien, a

junior high school, and a quaint little shrine in a grove

of camphor trees. It’s a very peaceful place to visit and

enjoy nature. Our Japanese friends and neighbors

are hard-working, honest, and eager to help out

when needed. Also, I never cease to marvel at this

incredibly beautiful country, a perfect blend of rugged

mountains, picturesque farmlands, awe-inspiring

seascapes, and bustling, modern cities. And, I’m quite

impressed with Japan’s public transportation system!”

- Jenna West, Resident since 1997

“That there are people here willing to answer all your questions before you arrive and then welcome you with open arms once you’re here!”

- Angie Rhinehart

“I'm thankful

for all of the

amazing people

I have met here,

and for the

opportunity to

grow up and

live in a place

as beautiful as

Iwakuni.”

- Linda Cordes

“I am thankful for the wonderful culture of Japan and having the opportunity to be stationed here. I love it here! The Japanese people are incredibly gracious, the food is delicious, and the countryside is amazing.”

- Christina Rodenbeck Waugh

“It's amazing that people

from our community

share their favorite travel

spots with us so we can

explore Japan as well.

With the language and

especially the writing

barrier here in Asia it's

not easy to find out

about where to go. But

the Iwakuni Explorer

helps making the best of

our time here and see as

much as possible.”

- Tasha Rockman

“I'm thankful for the kindness of the Japanese people.”

- Hope Baker-Carter

“Thankful to experience the Japanese culture.”

- Victor Zelaya

“I'm grateful for the community spouses, most importantly those that have made this an easier transition making us feel like family!”

- Arlie Miller

“Me and my family live in Iwakuni

Japan for a little over one year

and one of the things that we

enjoy the most are the Japanese

peoples. How respectful they

are and willing to go out of their

way to help. Also Iwakuni is an

incredible safe area and with

3 little girls We can not ask for

more!”

- The Tarquinii Family

“I am thankful for the “family” connections we have made over our years here in Iwakuni. We have developed some great friends for life. I am thankful for the amazing opportunity to live and experience daily an amazing culture, especially the food! Even after living in Iwakuni for almost 7 years, I still get astonished at this truly wonderful country.”

- Deanna O'Neal

“I'm thankful for Hyla Melloy Ernst. Her and her

husband, Adam, have contributed with many

insightful blogs/posts for Iwakuni Explorer

that help people get out and enjoy Japan. She

is also active with the Girl Scouts. She truly is a

blessing! I am very proud to call her my friend.”

the person or not. Love this base.”

- Heather Payne

“I'm thankful for the opportunity to experience the Kintai area, shopping in Hiroshima and the Peace Park Memorials.”

-Shelby Thomason

“I'm thankful for medical home port

branch Iwakuni. I'm new here, so

I don't have too much to form my

opinion from just yet, but so far they

have gone above and beyond for my

kiddos. They never make you feel like

an inconvenience, they are prompt

and thorough and loving. They have

even made balloon animals for my

worried toddler in urgent care. It's just

comfortable there, a far cry different

than where we just came from, and

that's a welcome relief! “

translation with my doctor. But on top of that she taught me everything about

pregnancy and delivery. Every single time when I had a question I will always call

her or go visit her at her office she always receive me with open hands.”

-Diana Marquez

“I am thankful

for my amazing

“I am thankful for the opportunity I received to work for MCCS

Iwakuni which allows me to provide for and see my family

smile everyday as well as helping the single marines live life

while in this beautiful country.“

- Paul Anthony Torres

“I am thankful for the many programs aboard the base

offered to Marines/Sailors and their families. There is always

something going on. While being here for only 3 months

my family has done so much in that short time, for the next

three years our schedule is booked full. We are also grateful

for all the support and kindness from everyone that has

been stationed here for some time. Landing here and being

thrown into everything was stressful. Having all my questions

answered and anyone readily available and willing to help in

anyway they can is a blessing.”

- Amie Dean

“I am thankful

that there

are so many

playgrounds and

places to play

here.”

- Xan Guthrie

“ I am thankful for all of the things I can do on base since I turned 10.”

- Jeremiah Puma

“Thankful for

nice Japanese

people I have

met and the new

experience of

sushi.”

- Charles Corneille

“I recently broke my leg in three places on a Mt. Fuji trip.

Tiffany and Jumbo from ODR were caring and helpful to help

get down from between the 9 and 91/2 station. Thank you for

good friends like Julie Boucher who stayed with me in the rain

waiting for assistance. She is down to earth and such a lovely

friend. She took care of my son for the remainder of the trip.

Thank God for Alex Roloff and Liz Pham who invited me to

stay with them in Yokosuka for a week as I was seeing doctors.

They were awaiting the birth of their beautiful daughter, but

allowed me into their lives at such a private time. Yes, their

baby arrived as I was there. I am continued to be blessed by

my M.C. Perry Elementary family as I return to teaching in

a full leg cast. My family has been blessed with meals and

offers for help, if needed. This is a wonderful community and

I am thankful to live in Iwakuni! I am ready to pay it forward.

Our family is also thankful for Hope Carter, Zane Presley, and

others who are dedicated to our Boy Scout Troops.”
