Newsletter

Welcome to this, the November 2015 issue ofthe District 201W2 newsletter.

Although I thought that life would slow down abit after our District Convention, the remainderof October and beginning of November hascontinued to be a busy time.

I did however enjoy a more relaxing time attending DG Colin Heap’s District201W1 Convention at the Vines, held the weekend after our DistrictConvention. The main keynote speaker at DG Colin’s Convention wasNational Membership Coordinator, PDG John Muller, who remained in WAfor a few days after the Convention. New Lions for October 2015.Welcome to all our new Lions. We hope you enjoy working andhaving fun with Lions Clubs in 201W2

Congratulations also to PDG Tim Irvine and his team fromthe Atwell Lions Club on their success at the recentDryandra Olympics, with a hard fought victory over teamsfrom the Lions Clubs of Baldivis, Booragoon, Kwinana,Port Kennedy and South Perth, the event being wellorganized by PDG Alan Hawkins.

The Lions Centennial Celebrations continue to gainmomentum, with Multiple District’s “100 Year, 100Stories of Service” campaign, which centres on 100clubs in Australia each providing $1,000 in grantsthrough their Activities Accounts to provide ‘seedfunding’ for 100 projects in their local communities. Each District has been asked to identify at least 5Clubs who may wish to participate in the project, withthe Lions Clubs of Busselton and Margaret River fromthis District having already agreed to do so.

After some 15 months of hard work, the DistrictStrategic Planning Committee, under the outstandingchairmanship of PCC Ambrose Depiazzi, will bepresenting a draft three year Strategic Plan to theNovember Cabinet meeting, for review and approval

by the District Cabinet. This will provide our Districtwith a clear vision and action plan, to ensure ourviability into the future.

Can I please remind Club Secretaries of theimportance of completing their Club’s MonthlyMembership Reports (MMR’s) via the MyLCI website,to save our hard working Cabinet Secretary BevHawkins the time and effort of following up thoseoutstanding Clubs at the end of each month?

In addition, all Clubs should now have submitted theiraudited financial accounts for the 2014/2015 year toCabinet Treasurer Mike Ottmann. Failure to do soplaces the District’s charitable collections licence injeopardy and therefore the ability of all Clubs in theDistrict to raise funds from the general public.

Finally, my saying for the month is

“The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty –Winston Churchill”.

The Lions Club of Manjimup is holding a convention in October 2016.

There will be street stalls, displays in the RSL and Raffles for some reallyamazing prizes along Brockman Street in the Manjimup town centre.

A flag ceremony and memorial service will be held for Lions who havepassed on to the big club in the sky. All friends and family members of ourlost Lions are very welcome to attend.

We will also be holding a dinner and dance to a fabulous live band!

For further details or to book your accommodation go to theDistrict Website 201w2.lions.org.au and click on Convention.

CANCER INSTITUTE RECOGNISES LONGTIME SUPPORT

At a recent lunch the Lions Cancer institute recognised two of the specialists who have for many years

assisted voluntarily with the free skin cancer screening project.

Mr. Robert Fitzpatrick, Plastic Surgeon has assisted at least two screenings per year since 1993.

During that time Robert has travelled into the Goldfields and the Pilbara with the screening unit as well as

many other country WA areas.

Prof. Kurt Gebauer, Dermatologist has assisted since 1999 similarly in country WA and is always available

to answer any questions other team members may have regarding cancerous lesions. Kurt has also provided

letters of support to the South Australian Dermatology Society ensuring that the project expansion into SA

is well received.

Neither of these gentlemen will accept payment even choosing to cover all of their own vehicle expenses

when travelling to and from country screenings.

The Lion Hearing Foundation recently held theirAGM at the Ear Science Institute Australia (ESIA).Following the business meeting, Chairman, LionChristina Smelt introduced the speakers. The first speaker was Lize Coetzee of the ESIA. Lizegrew up in South Africa with a brother who hadprofound hearing loss. She spent many hours athearing clinics with him and when it came to choosingher career, she wanted to become an audiologist. She is now very proud to be the manager of the LionsHearing Clinics in WA, (owned and managed byESIA) as they are an employer of choice and a strongand trusted name in the industry and community. It takes people with hearing loss seven years to dosomething about it and some take even longer. Sogiven the negative impact of hearing loss and thebenefits of treatment in the Clinics, the Lions HearingFoundation Screening Bus does a valuable job ofraising the awareness of hearing loss in WA. Thebus travels far and wide to promote hearing, byproviding free hearing screenings, and educatingpeople about the importance of intervention to dealwith hearing loss. She is also grateful for the support given by theFoundation towards children’s hearing assessmentsand supplying, where needed, personal FM Systems. The Foundation donates over $17,000 per yeartowards these assessments.A new Clinic is opening in Bunbury which will be ahuge bonus as this is the first Clinic outside theMetropolitan area. Together, the Lions HearingClinics and the Lions Hearing Foundation play a vitalrole in improving the hearing and lives of people inWestern Australia.Chairman Chris thanked Lize for her support to theFoundation and looks forward to the ongoingrelationship the between Lions Hearing Clinics andthe ESIA.Our second speaker was Jody Maitland who talkedon her personal experience of cochlear implants inthree generations of her family. Her father, Les, was diagnosed with hearing loss afterhe started school. He was fitted with one hearing aidwhich was attached to a large battery pack that heused to carry in the pocket of his shirt. His familycould not afford to purchase a second hearing aid.Because of this, Les felt that he did not reach his fullpotential and left school as soon as possible and

gained apprenticeship as a carpenter with the PublicWorks Department. He needed to work in a teamenvironment which he did for all of his working life ashe was unable to use a telephone or radio. After years of frustration not being able to hear andongoing problems with hearing aids, Les contactedthe ESIA to be assessed for a cochlear implant. Hereceived his first implant in 2005 and never lookedback. He had his second implant in 2007. He cannow use the telephone, listen to music, hear the clockticking and, more importantly, he can hear his wife, children and grandchildren. His only regret is that hedid not have it done sooner. When Jody was born, her mother always suspectedthere was something wrong with her hearing, butpeople said she would talk when she was ready, andher mother was told she was being paranoid andover-protective. Around the age of three years old,Jody was referred for a hearing test. She was thenfitted with hearing aids and had fortnightly speechtherapy. She had help during her school life from visitingteachers once a week but school was still a struggle.Upon leaving school she found it difficult to gainemployment as she struggled to use a telephone andthis affected her work. In 2004 her son Hayden was born, followed by Blairin 2005. Both boys passed their new-born hearingtests but due to the family history of deafness, theywere referred to the State Child Development Centrefor regular 6 monthly screening. They continued topass these tests until Hayden was 3 years old andBlair 2 years old when they were referred to AustralianHearing and fitted with their first set of hearing aids.During the boys early years Jody was a ‘stay at home’mother as she was profoundly deaf even whenwearing hearing aids. She did not attend play groupsetc as she could not follow conversations. The boyssuffered from lack of social interaction and were notlearning the necessary social skills. This was whenher mother realised that Jody’s hearing loss wasaffecting the children’s upbringing. After much encouragement from her parents, shecontacted the ESIA at the end of 2006 to be assessedfor a cochlear implant. On 16 April 2007, ProfessorAtlas operated and she received bilateral implants, and the world as she knew it would never be thesame.

LIONS HEARING FOUNDATIONANNOUNCES NEW AWARD

She went from 10% hearing to 96% hearing. Shecould hear her boys talking and more importantly, she could hear them from another room. She couldalso use the telephone and be independent insteadof asking other people to make calls for her. With this increased hearing came an increase in self-confidence. She joined a parent mentor group withthe WA Foundation of Deaf Children encouraging andsupporting other families who have deaf children. When Hayden started school in 2008, he also had avisiting teacher for deaf children once a week. FromYear 1 he started using an FM System with hishearing aids. He liked school but even with his FMSystem he struggled to hear his teachers. Last yearwhen he was in year 5, his mother made the decisionto have him assessed for a cochlear implant. On 17 November 2014, Hayden had his date withProfessor Atlas. He received one implant in his rightear as he still has a reasonable amount of hearing inhis left ear. After ‘switch on’ he commenced speechtherapy at the ESIA to help him to learn the newsounds he was hearing. At his six month review hishearing had increased 35%.Hayden can now hear the teachers more clearly andhe often forgets he is wearing it. He has becomemore confident in himself and participates inclassroom discussions which is something he neverdid before. In 2015 the Lions Hearing Foundationnominated him for the Lions Children of CourageAwards which further boosted his confidence. Hehas since had his hair cut very short so that peoplecan see his implant!

I have known the family for almost twelve monthsand the difference in Hayden is huge. When I firstmet him he was still withdrawn and learning to copewith his implant but today he is a confident andoutgoing boy. In the future he will require an implantto his left ear and Blair will also be going that route. We wish them luck and thank Jody for this wonderfulinsight into receiving cochlear implants.

The Lions Hearing Foundation also announced a newAward. This is for Clubs to purchase for a memberwho has excelled during the year in their club. TheBoard unanimously agreed to call this the ‘Lorna andArthur Dodd Award’. Lorna and her late husbandhave been associated with the Foundation more orless since its inception in 1977 and Lorna is still amember of our Board. The Lions Club of Port Kennedy lost a specialmember when Lion Glenda Lillimagi passedaway suddenly a week after our districtconvention. She had attended the conventionthe week before she passed away and was thelife of the Saturday night function (hence thephoto) and had a ball.

Glenda had been a member for 9 years and hadalways helped out on any project we had. Shewould sit for hours selling Xmas cakes or doingXmas wrapping at the Warnbro and WaikikiVillage Shops. She always attended districtconventions and our annual Lions Olympics heldat Dryandra Lions Village. No matter what sportwas being run, she would have a go, includingswinging a golf stick. Glenda had looked afterthe school dux awards for the past 4 years, organising the trophy inscriptions and prizes forthe 7 schools in our area.

Glenda was always a bright and cheerful memberand had travelled to New York and Chicago 7years ago to attend the International Lionsconvention in Chicago for the 90th anniversaryof Lions, where one of our own club memberswas inducted as our District Governor (DarrelMainard). It was a great shock to all memberswhen we learnt Glenda had passed on. She wasloved by all who knew her, including the villagewhere she lived and the Rockingham Red HatLadies group that she was also active with. RIP

Glenda.

Dryandra Challenge Weekend

The 9th Annual Dryandra Challenge Weekend/ ‘Lions Olympics’ was held on the 31st October/ 1st November 2015, with Lions from six (6) clubsparticipating, being the 2014 DefendingChampions Port Kennedy, along with Kwinana,South Perth, Baldivis, Booragoon and Atwell.

This was the first time that the Lions Club of Atwellhad attended the weekend and proved to be avery lively contender, keen to take home the‘Throne of Champions’ Trophy. The weekendwas once again combined with the 2015 AnnualGeneral Meeting of the Lions Dryandra VillageBoard, which was held on the Saturday afternoon.

The event started at midday on Saturday withthe ‘Bocce’ Competition, which saw some verycompetitive competition on the challenging andtesting courts. The Baldivis trio of Kaye, Amandaand Simon stood tall and took the points, despitea good effort from the Atwell 2 Team to knockthem over.

This was followed by the ‘Horse Shoe Tossing’competition, with the Kwinana 2 Team of Trudy,Katrina, Scott and Celia proving too strong forthe Baldivis Team in the final and taking thepoints.

A lunch break was taken before the start of theDryandra Boards AGM, which gave everyone thechance to freshen up and get ready for thecontinuation of the fun and games after the AGM.

The final competition of the day was the great‘Thong Toss’. There was a wide range oftechniques, skills , styles and endeavour shownas everyone tried to get their rubber thong to gothat little bit further. The cabins and spectatorsalike were in danger on several occasions asThongs seem to fly in all directions. Scott madeseveral excursions onto the nearby cabin roof toretrieve the stray Thongs.

The Men’s Competition was very stronglycontested by Simon (Baldivis), Peter (Atwell) andToby (Kwinana), with Simon finally taking the toppoints. In the Ladies Competition, Marie (Atwell),Katrina (Kwinana) and Kaye (Baldivis) set thestandard with Marie finally taking the top pointsby centimetres.

The Saturday evening barbeque get-together inthe Currawong dining room was enjoyed by all, with the Kwinana Lions getting into the spirit of‘Halloween’ and dressing for the part with a ‘treator two’ for everyone. The carved ‘PumpkinHeads’ were very prominent, with a few of thelocal Possums enjoying a treat during the night.

After a good breakfast on the Sunday morning, the lines were formed and the eggs began to flyin the ‘Great Egg Toss’ competition. Each pairwas supplied with a ‘Fresh Egg’ from the cartonto stop any ‘foreign (possibly boiled)’ egg beingsmuggled into the lines. After a promising start, most of the eggs ended on the deck as a treatfor the local wildlife with three (3) pairs leftstanding to fight out for the points. Scott andCelia (Kwinana) were the first to fall, leaving theAtwell pairs of Tanyia / Craig and Marie / PDGTim to fight for bragging rights at their next clubmeeting. Despite their egg hitting the groundon several the Lions Dryandra Village Board ofDirectors set the date for their 2016 AGM at theirnext Board meeting.

Thank you to all the Clubs who competed in 2015and made it such an enjoyable weekend.
