This is the external dimension of my theme for this year, which is “Lions Care Everywhere”. It is Lions doing good deeds for others and performing acts of kindness in the world. There is another dimension to my theme. That is the internal dimension measured by the extent to which you care for your own Club members and families and show a genuine interest in the welfare of your fellow Lions. Both dimensions are equally important. Remember the old saying: “Charity begins at home”. I have been impressed by the Clubs that live up to the theme in both aspects and show love and concern for each other and then as Lions show the same concern for those in need in our community. I overheard one Lion say, “we are kicking amazing goals” and a Club President remarked, “we are punching above our weight”. These were from smaller Clubs that do so much. I salute you. Diversity of projects THE autonomy of our Clubs contributes to the great diversity of service projects and fund raising activities that we enjoy and to very different cultures and meeting styles within our Clubs. Is your Club open to new ideas or closed? When did your Lions Club last visit another Club or invite another Lions Club to visit you? Are you promoting your Club and its projects or hiding in the shadows? New members: are they encouraged to take office or are you recycling experienced Lions? Are you reviewing your projects to ensure their relevance and ongoing interest to your members or are you sticking to the past. Apprentices wanted PROSPECTIVE new members: are you welcoming them warmly and listening to their aspirations or ignoring them? Our capacity to continue our proud record of service depends on one thing – membership. Next time your Club is doing a sausage sizzle or BBQ put up a sign that says, “ Apprentices Wanted”. Why not? It is one way you may start a conversation about Lions Clubs, who we are and what we do that may attract a new Lion into your Club. A Membership Workshop is being held on 8th, 9th and 10th of April. Details are in this edition and I encourage you to check your diary and participate. The last workshop in Shepparton received very good feedback from both new and experienced Lions. Yes you can attend for one, two or three days. Scrub-up those scrappy signs WHEN driving along a highway or stopping at a Lions Park, how conscious are you of the quality of our Lions logo and signs? I see many as I travel around our District. Some are well maintained and others need repair or replacement. Next time you see a sign needing TLC please note it and ask the local Lions Club or send an email. Clean and bright Lions logos look great. Show pride in our Lions badge and logo. This year the number of Clubs investing in new catering equipment, BBQs, trailers and caravans has amazed me. A vast variety of shapes, sizes and colours. Send a photo of Lions in action with a story of your latest catering invention and we will publish the best in the June edition. Don’t forget your training … WE are getting closer to the dates for the training of Incoming Club Officers. Sunday, 15th May in Tatura and Sunday, 29th May in Doncaster. It really is essential to attend if you are taking on a new role in your Club. Please be at one of the sessions. The training of incoming Cabinet Officers is on Sunday, 22nd May. Marysville Caravan &Holiday Park is open again. There is still much to do at the park, but we have some cabins and a fewpowered sites. Come and see how the

I AM annoyed. No, perhaps that is toostrong a word. Let’s just say, I amdisappointed. The reason for my mood stems from

comments I heard at a recent senior Lionstraining course. It happened when we werediscussing the fact that newer Lions areoften not being integrated with the existingolder members of the Club. It is a situationwhich nearly always is mentioned at alllevels of Lions work, but with so manyhigh ranking Lions present, I was anxiousto see the reaction and hopefully to gainsome helpful suggestions.Imagine my thoughts when there was an

immediate answer: “Start a new Club”. Istill find it difficult to believe what I washearing. What a ridiculous solution, made even

more ridiculous when you consider that itcame from a group of senior Lions. Agroup who were so dedicated to the causeof Lionism that their only solution was totake the lazy way out.If you have been a Lion for a few years,

let me ask you this. What was your attitudewhen you first joined your local LionsClub? No doubt you were full ofenthusiasm about the things you could doin your community. You probably felt thatyou were joining a group of men andwomen who not only cared about thecommunity, but were prepared to dosomething about it.

WHAT HAS CHANGED?NEWER members of your Club have thesame potential for drive and enthusiasm, but they bring with them different ideas.Whether you like to admit or not, theworld does not stand still and if we are tocontinue to be a force for good in ourcommunity we cannot serve thatcommunity, based entirely on pastachievements. The solution is to embrace the newer

members and hope that their drive, theirenthusiasm, and their passion will rub offon the rest of the Club, and restore thepride that once was part of our existence. It will be hard work, but the result will be

a respected local Club, with new ideaswhere old and New Lions will both learnthat they have much to gain by workingtogether.Don’t just start a new Club. Rejuvenate

the existing Club by giving truemeaning toWE SERVE.

DEAR FRIENDS,I’m sorry for a group communication,

but don’t have time to contact you allindividually.Thank goodness the predicted death toll

from the Earth Quake has dropped to morelike 200 than the 400 that they thought hadperished. So far there are 150 people in a make shift

mortuary at Burnham Military Camp. AsID is confirmed (very difficult because ofsuch extensive injuries), deceased peopleare being brought to five of theChristchurch Funeral Homes mortuariesfor embalming. (ours is one of them). Wehave 45 funeral personnel from all over NZassisting. They are based at LincolnUniversity campus buildings. This has taken a huge amountof pressure off us all, as weknow a number of the peoplethat have perished, and haveour usual day to day otherresponsibilities.Next of kin families are

contacting the Funeral Homeof their choice and thentransport is arranged for them.It is hard to describe the situation here.

There is so much devastation. We have nowendured over 6,000 after shocks sinceSeptember 2010. There has been anotheraftershock this morning (of about 3) we arenow experts on measuring these! It is theones over 5 that really rattle us! The Quakelast Tuesday was 6.2 but was only 4km deepand only 10km from the city centre. That’swhy so much damage. The Septemberquake was 7.2 but was 30km from the cityand about 40km deep.We have lost so may beautiful and historic

buildings. The face of Christchurch haschanged forever. We have two buildings withlots of people still in/under them. The CTVbuilding collapsed like a pack of cards(despite rubber blocks in foundations) therehas been a fire there and over 50 peopleremain under that including a lot of youngJapanese students from an English languageschool. I know Jo Giles who is still there. Joand I stood for the City Council three yearsago. Her elderly mother is distraught.

Yesterday I heard of a young man whohas lost his wife, his home and his business(words can not describe what this youngman must be going through).Five of our Lions Club members in the

Club I belong to have lost their homes, totalwrite offs. One member has a large wheelybin full of all their china and crystal allsmashed to bits and he is keeping it for theinsurance company. One member’sgranddaughter was driving in the inner cityat the time of the quake, and a man in a carfailed to give way to her at an intersection. He drove around that corner, and his carhas hit by falling masonery off a building, completely squashing the man and the car. This poor girl is completely traumatised.

On a more positive note, thehelp and support of everyone isincredible. All of you have beenin touch with great support. Wehave 400 hundred rescuesquads from all over the worldhere and Australian Police. They have all been applaudedand clapped as they arrived atthe airport. There is still 50% of

the city without power and water. Dairycompanies have been delivering large tanksof water. On Saturday I helped my businesspartner John empty their house in St.Albans (to be demolished).I must stop rambling on. Hope I have not

missed anything important. The mainthing is that our families and we are okayand safe but somewhat shaken up. I was inthe shower when this quake hit. I wasthrown around quite badly but fortunatelymy shower is not large. There is not muchto hang onto in there and I was covered insoap so even the more slippery. Theexperience felt more like that I was in awashing machine! The only damage here atthe Funeral Home was one broken vase. Weare starting to get surface crackseverywhere after so much shaking though(not structural).Thank you all again for your support,

love and best wishes, all really appreciated, especially at this time.

Sincerely, and fond regards to you all.Peter Yearbury

A Friends Group couldappeal to you …FRIENDS of Laleia Inc. (City of Bayside)and Friends of Manatuto Inc. (City ofKingston) are two groups that are run byFriends Groups to assist their specific areasin East Timor. They are very active groupsthat have carried out major projectsduring the last few years and continue todo so.Joining your local Council’s Friends

Group is a great opportunity to assist ournear neighbours to the north of Australiawho played such an important role for ourtroops during WWII.Taken on, as a Club project would earn

project hours for your Club.Friends Groups are small in number, 12

or so main members but have the capacitywith others to raise many thousands ofdollars per year. The Manatuto group hasbuilt a kindergarten at a cost of over$30,000 and is currently paying twoteachers for two years to teach over 50enrolments. The Laleia group has built acommunity Education and LearningCentre and provided six computers forstudents who attend to learn aboutcomputers. The same group has funded10-12 week visits from EastTimor to Bayside. Many Lions

from ourDistrict havehad involvementin East Timor: BillBennett from Vermont South and RobOwers, Colin King and Roger Budd fromWheelers Hill who have been attendingFriends of Vermase meetings in the City ofMonash. PDG Derek Challis often does theguest speaking round. In March, Kevin Bailey the Honorary

Consul in Victoria for East Timor wasinducted at the Lions Club of Moorabbinand was present with his wife Grace. Kevindoubled as the guest speaker – the subjectof course – East Timor. Moorabbin Lionshave shown interest and the Friends ofManatuto were represented at the meetingby their President Lynn Duguid. Lions in Australia generally rely on ALF

and LCIF and completely miss thewonderful hands-on involvementprovided by Friends Groups. Sendingvolunteers to Laleia and other areas for aprescribed length of time (say threemonths) is exciting and makes an immensecontribution where costs can often beborne by the Federal Government throughAusaid funding. Many Lions may gain much satisfaction

through this kind of work, often theseprojects fall outside the realm of LCIF.Contact Tony Carr PDG for furtherinformation.
