Your Executive Board on suggestion of the FinanceCommittee at its September meeting voted to transfer themoney, $1,930.76, in the Memorial Fund to the HoustonGeological Society Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Societyis trustee of the Scholarship Fund (formerly Calvert Fund)which had in excess of $10,000 prior to this transfer and soonshould have the ability to grant a $500 scholarship to aworthy, needy graduate student.
The society will now make donations to the ScholarshipFund in memory of deceased HGS members instead of theMemorial Fund which was not large enough to serve aworkable purpose. The IRS has ruled that all donations to theHGS Scholarship Fund will be tax deductible as charitablecontributions. Your personal donations to this fund will beappreciated and serve a very worthy cause.

Dr. Berg gives a pragmatic approach to his two afternoonlecture series by showing how to both measure and predict(1) size and shape of the reservoir body, (2) nature of thetrapping facies, (3) effectiveness of the trap facies as a barrierto oil migration, and (4) influence of hydrodynamic flow onthe possible oil accumulation. His experience includessubsurface work from 1951-58, for the California Co. andCosden Petroleum Corp. in the Rocky Mountains, and as aDenver consultant from 1959-66. In 1967 Dr. Berg came toTexas A&M University where he was first Professor and thenHead of the Department of Geology, and since 1972 Directorof the Office of University Research. He has become wellknown for his papers on environmental il)terpretation fromsubsurface and small core data, grain size analysis, and oil
. column calculations. Dr. Berg has directed a number ofmaster's and doctor's theses in these fields of investigationand he will draw on this entire background for the benefit ofthis special Continuing Education lecture.
The Continuing Education Committee is pleased toannounce the second program of the 76-77 year is to be givenby Dr. George de Vries Klein entitled "Exploration forTurbidites and Other Deep-Water Sandstones." This coursewas chosen to expose some concepts of clastic depositionnot frequently used in Gulf Coast exploration. The two day,six-hour lecture series will be given on January 19 and 20,1977.

Dr. Fred M. Bullard isProfessor Emeritus ofGeology at the Universityof Texas at Austin where hehas been a member of thefaculty since 1924. From1929-1937, he was Chair-man of the Department ofGeology. In 1945and againin 1954, he was a Distin-guished Lecturer for AAPGand he was in the VisitingScientist program of theAmerican Geophysical Un-ion in the spring of 1966and in 1968-69. He is a
Fellow, Geological Society of America and MineralogicalSociety of America and a member of AAPG, Phi Beta Kappa,Sigma Xi, and Sigma Gamma Epsilon. While on a U.S.Geological Survey expedition to Alaska in 1929 Dr. Bullardsaw, for the first time, an active volcano and becameinterested. Since that time, he has studied volcanoes in manyareas of the world and is a recognized authority onvolcanoes. He has published numerous scientific papers andbulletins. In 1962, he authored a book entitled Vo/canoe, in"[heory, in History, in Eruption. A revision and enlargement ofthis book, underthetitle Vo/canoes of the Earth, published bythe Univ. of Texas Press, is scheduled for release inNovember 1976.
VOLCANOES AND THE ENVIRONMENT (Abstract)

The environmental impact of volcanoes is far reachingand while the destructive effects are the ones commonlyassociated with volcanoes, the overall impact is certainlybeneficial. The destructive effects of volcanic eruptions, suchas lava flows, ash falls, hot avalanches, and mudflows arebriefly reviewed. The most dangerous and least predictableare mudflows, such as the one that destroyed Herculaneumin the 79 A.D; eruption of Vesuvius. Mt. Rainer and othervolcanoes of the Cascades are potential sites for destructivemudflows. The possible entent of such flows, based on pasthistory, is considered.
The major environmental impact of volcanoes is in theireffect on climate and soils. The huge quantity of ash ejectedinto the atmosphere in a major eruption results in a decreasein the solar radiation and a lowering of the temperature. Theunusually cold weather throughout the world in 1816,commonly known as the "year without asummer", coincidedwith the eruption of Tambora Volcano in Indonesia. Theeruption of Krakatoa in 1883 had a noticeable effect on theclimate. Measurements of solar radiation being conducted atthe time of the 1912 eruption of Katmai Volcano proved theeffectiveness of volcanic ash to lower the temperature.

Beginning in the 1880s, a world-wide warming trend setin, which reached a climax in the 1940s, and since that timehas reversed. The role of volcanic dust was examined in aneffort to account for these world-wide temperature changes,and it was concluded that major volcanic eruptions wereresponsible for lowering global temperature. The study wasexpanded to include pollution of the atmosphere by carbondioxide, smoke, dust particles, etc., largely derived from thecombustion of fossil fueJs, petroleum and gas. The resultsshowed that pollution by human activities was minorcompared to the contribution by volcanoes and that volcanicdust is an important factor in world-wide temperaturechanges.
Periodic ash falls from volcanic eruptions maintains thefertility of the soil. A study in Indonesia shows a directrelationship between soil fertility, density of population, andthe location of active volcanoes.

PRINCIPLES OF HYDROCARBON GENERATION ANDAPPLICATION
TO OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION (Abstract)

Petroleum generation in the subsurface involves primari-ly the geothermal (time-temperature) conversion of organicmatter into hydrocarbons. The type of organic matter, itsabundance, and the geothermal history of the sedimentslargely determines the quantity and the type of petroleumhydrocarbons generated in a specific source facies.
Many physical methods have been used to measure thegeothermal history of a sedimentary sequence but by far themost informative, with respect to oil-gas generation, are thegeochemical changes in hydrocarbon type and compositionconcomitant with increasing diagenesis. The chemicalparameters reflecting disgenesis are well documented and,when applied to the exploration process, commonly are usedto evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of sedimentarysections in frontier areas prior to extensive explorationdrilling.
In a complete basin assessment, a comprehensivegeochemical program provides pertinent, basic informationnecessary to delineate organic facies, hydrocarbon sourcefacies, and the types of oil and/or gas which can be expectedwithin prospective reservoir facies.
