ADVENT

The first Sunday of Advent is December 3.

This will begin our new church year where we will

change to Lectionary B.

What exactly is Advent? The Merriam-

Webster Dictionary defines Advent as the period

beginning four Sundays before Christmas and ob-

served by some Christians as a season of prayer

and fasting.

Advent Wreath –

www.episcopalchurch.org A circle of greenery, marked by four candles that represents the four Sundays of the season of Advent . An additional candle is lit as each new Sunday is celebrated in Advent. Advent wreaths are used both in churches and in homes for devo-tional purposes. The candles may be blue, pink or lavender, depending on local custom. The colors may represent Peace, Love and Joy. Some advent wreaths include a white candle in the center known as the “Christ Candle,” which is lit on Christmas Eve.

We are entering into this season of prayer, fasting and anticipation. What traditions do you and your family hold/cling to during Advent?

Soup and Shop will soon be upon us!

Jan and her crew are busy making baskets.

If you have any new or very gently used items like

coffees, teas, wine, crackers, lotions, potions, stuff

for a golf basket, movie basket, craft basket, bring

them to Ashton Hall. We are also looking for baked

goods or candies to plate up.

That takes care of the Shop portion. Now

we have the Soup portion. We need pie, pie and

more pie! If you would like to make a pot of soup—

great!

There will be a sign up sheet for soup mak-

ers, pie bakers (or buyers), dishwashers & dryer,

servers, drink table and cashier. Lest we forget—

crackers and or rolls.

Book Club

The second half of "A Lineage of Grace: Five Stories of Unlikely Women Who Changed Eternity" by Francine Rivers will be discussed on Saturday, November 4, at 9AM.

Time permitting discussion of the second book, "Five Women of the English Reformation" by Paul F. M. Zahl, will begin.

Father Jim Davis passed away on October 12. He was St. Mary’s priest from 1956 to 1962. Ashton House was built during his tenure. He was a well liked priest and moved on to the 'new' St. Stephen's in Boise. Services have not yet been scheduled at the this time.

Perhaps during a Sunday Coffee Hour those that remember Father Davis will share their fond memo-ries of him.

Convention 2018

Oh my word!! What a magnificent speaker is our Presiding Bishop Michael Curry! And his Canon Michael is no slouch either! Both know how to grab their audience and not let go. Sandy Sanders, Therese Burgess and Lynne Crabtree had the great privilege to be there Friday through Sunday. On Saturday Rick & Cammi Veenstra joined the trio. On Sunday Kevin and Sara Iwerson were able to hear the Presiding Bishop’s sermon. What an amazing experience! One resolution was passed. We will support the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem with prayer, pil-grimage, letters—more on this later! I promise!

Stewardship

Definition of Stewardship: What I do with all that I have, after I say “I believe.” And Using the gifts God has given us, to do the work God is calling us to do.

Christian stewardship is grateful and responsible use of God's gifts in the light of God's purpose as revealed in Jesus Christ. Christian stewards, em-powered by the Holy Spirit, commit themselves to conscious, purposeful decisions. Both definitions above came from http://archive.episcopalchurch.org/stewardship. Everyone cringes when they hear stewardship. “Here we go again, money, money, money!” Not so and not so fast! Stewardship is time, given to us by God. Good stewards use it wisely. Stewardship is talent, again given by God to be used wisely. Stewardship is treasure, also given by God to be used wisely. Stewardship is temple, you body given by God to be, you guessed it, to be cared for and used wisely. Think about how you are a steward in your church life. Sure you tithe, but do you use your time and talent(s) to help St. Mary’s? Are you aware of the ministries that St. Mary’s has? Take a look on page 8. It has some of the ministries that we do. Don’t see one you like? Fine. Take something you are passionate about and ask Rev. Gretchen

St. Mary’s Academic Achievement Award (AAA)

In order to encourage and challenge the youth in

our immediate church family, we have established

the St. Mary’s Academic Achievement Award. One

hundred dollars will be awarded to any high

school, junior high or middle school student

who receives a 3.5 GPA report card.

For our young people it is vitally important for them

to understand that getting the finest education pos-

sible, and using that knowledge with the guidance

of the Holy Spirit, is their best hope – both for their

future and for the future of mankind.

Requirements: In order to apply for the award the

student must attend St. Mary’s Church and must

have a parent, grandparent or guardian who is a

member of St. Mary’s Church. Report cards should

be submitted to the Priest or to a member of the

vestry….there is no application form. If more than

one student qualifies, multiple awards will be given,

but students may only receive the award once dur-

ing each academic year.

The awards are funded by the L. Dean and Gay

Welch Memorial gifts in keeping with their lifelong

support of education excellence.
