10 Principles of NAK LeadershipA NAK MAN has an honorable character that selflessly serves his Brotherhood and Community. A NAKMAN Leads in all facets of his life. He continues to challenge himself and those around him to becomeaccomplished & productive leaders. A NAK MAN Leads and mentors the next generation of leadershipand honors the legacy and knowledge received from their teachers, mentors & brothers.
In your brother’s eyes, your leadership is everything. Your brother’s activities affect Nu AlphaKappa's objectives and it’s wellbeing.
1. “Be” what he is (beliefs and values)
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
2. “Know” what he knows (job, tasks, human nature, etc.)
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
3. “Do” what he does (implement, motivate, and provide direction)
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
12______________________________________________________________________What makes anyone want to follow a leader?
People want to be guided by people they respect, who are ethical and who have a clear sense ofdirection.
A sense of direction is achieved by conveying a strong vision of the future and building consensus in clearplan to achieve it.
The Three Most Important Keys of Leadership:
Studies have shown that trust and confidence in positions of leadership are the most reliable predictors ofmember satisfaction in an organization. Effective communication by leadership in three critical areas isthe key to winning organizational trust and confidence, and involves:
1. Helping brothers understand the leadership’s overall strategy, policies, as well as other ways forinvolvement.2. Helping brothers understand how they can contribute to Nu Alpha Kappa’s dedication to its Pillars.3. Sharing information with brothers on both how NAK is doing and how a brother’s own chapter(undergrad and/or alumni) is doing. Basically, you must be trustworthy and you have to be able tocommunicate a vision of where you are going
The Process of Great Leadership:
1. Inspire a shared vision Next, communicate your vision in words that can be understood by thebrotherhood.2. Challenge the process First, find a process you believe needs to be improved the most.3. Enable others to act Give them the tools, authority and methods to solve problems themselves.4. Model the way When the process gets tough, get your hands dirty. A boss tells others what to do; aleader shows it can be done.

Command respect at all meetings by holding firm to methods of addressing the chair anddiscussing motions. Brothers will respect you for it if responsibility is fully carried out.
1. Description of Committee Work

2. How should committees members be selected?3. Membership should be voluntary.4. Brothers should be in good standing.5. Brothers should be active in chapter6. Have experience with committee work from previous assignments.
1. The Vice President along with the President is responsible for ensuring that committees carry outactivities assigned.
1. To get the brothers on the committee to function and cooperate.2. Seek outside help if needed.3. Help the brothers with the work.4. Share the responsibilities.5. Give a report of accomplishments to the Chapter.6. Give credit to the brothers on committee for work done.7. Attend the appropriate executive committee meetings.8. Some Things That Every Vice President Should Know Never start a meeting without an agenda a list of things to be covered by the meeting. An agenda
lays out a schedule of important items, saves time and maintains the fluidity of a meeting. Always start a meeting on time. If people expect you to start late, you will start late resulting in a
waste of time for you and the people who showed up on time. State the purpose of the meeting at the beginning. Odd as it may seem, brothers of a meeting do
not always know why they are there. Informing them of the purposes help them concentrate onwhat the meeting is to accomplish. Also, it helps in directing their thinking.
Keep the meeting moving. Just as a meeting is seldom any better than its chair, so it is seldom any

more productive than the interest of it participating brother. Interest tags when action tags. Whilechairing a meeting, keep it moving.
Speak clearly. The chair has the agenda and know what it’s all about. If the chair cannot be heard, nothing can be accomplished. Insist in order.
Maintain the platform and manage speakers. No brother is to talk out of turn. This helps limitinterruptions and full transparency of information.
Avoid talking to individuals without talk to the Group/Chapter. Side conversations between the chairand brother disrupt the meeting.
Keep the speaker talking clearly and audibly. If a brother asks for the floor and it given it, it is up tothe chair to see that proper use is made of it.
Sum up what the brother has said and state a decision. Not all brothers will be good at expressingthemselves. It is up to the presiding officer to determine what they have said and whether or not ithas been understood and get the decision of all brothers on the topic.
Stop aimless discussion and circumvention. Form a committee through electing brothers orappointment of brothers.
Keep control of the meeting at all times without stifling free comments. Invite (constructive)criticism and disagreement. Also, ask for support and clarification of issues.
Don’t argue with the speaker. Ask questions if necessary, but remember the chair is supposed tobe neutral. No matter how ardent the feeling, let the group make the decision.
Be aware of the brothers’ comfort of the discussion. Check at the end of the meeting to see if everybrother feels that the particular subjects of the meeting have been adequately covered. It is the dutyof the chair to see that sound and just decisions are reached.
