MISA EN ESPAÑOL
Last Advent, Our Lady of the Lake began the practice of Exposition and extended Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament each Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The Worship Commission promoted this devotion for several reasons: We want to deepen our community’s appreciation of the gift that the Lord gives us in his abiding sacramental Presence in our Church. We are aware of the increased need for prayerful reflection during our pastoral and long-range planning. And we want to facilitate opportu-nities for individuals to draw closer to God by dedicating a Holy Hour to prayer on Fridays, especially in commemoration of the Passion of the Lord.
Participation in Adoration on Fridays was very faithful, although we did have to contend with some icy weather last winter. Then the pandemic broke out and all public services were suspended. This has been a trying time for Catholics who draw so much sustenance from the Eucharist. As people have said over and over, “Watching the Mass on a screen is comforting to us for sure, but it can’t replace being there.”
We have been cautiously expanding access to worship since

public services were once again permitted. Yet, we are all very much aware of the need for continued vigilance and keeping to best practices for ensuring our continued health. Social distancing and mask use have added an awkward dimension to our customary practices in Church, but so far they have been effective in keeping us healthy. For the past six weeks, we have offered Adoration on Wednesday afternoons for an hour and have had modest, but steady participation.

Leader Needed
The Worship Commission is searching for a leader for the
Ministry of Hospitality. The coordi-nator of the Ministry of Hospi-
tality recruits, trains and inspires parishioners to serve as ministers of hospitality so that all who visit our parish find a welcome place
to worship. This would be a great position for a couple to work
together as a team. Please contact the office for more information.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the divine power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen
Mass Intentions:

Dear Friends in Christ!I certainly hope you have had a
chance to begin your Ignatius Examen prayer steps. I promise you will both see and feel the results. Let’s review before I go on, but first a disclaimer: I have simplified the process of the examen so that you can start with the basic steps and grow with the process over time. I have only been practicing examen for six months and am still learning to put all the steps together. Some days, I have a tough time seeing where God has been active in or through me. Some days, forgiveness might not be in the cards until I pray more about the situation. But please persevere and you will come to treasure this personal contact with God each day. It’s important to review where we are.
STEP ONE REVIEW: 1. Did you find time to just write
everything down that makes your heart smile? If not, do this now! My list was four yellow legal pages, both sides long and I am sure yours was just as impressive. I am blessed beyond compare and definitely more than I will ever deserve.
2. When you finished writing, did you feel some peace and gratefulness to God? Boy, did I!
3. Did you pick up the phone and call anyone? (I did)
4. Did you say ‘I love you’ to anyone just for being on your list of blessings? (I did)
5. Did you just plain old feel better when you took the time to consider how fortunate you really are? (I did)
6. Take a minute now and see if you should call someone or check on
NOTES FROM VICKIGod blessed others through you!
2. Do you recognize times during the day where you spoke unkindly or thoughtlessly?
3. Were you kind in your actions all day? Helping others is the epitome of evangelization!
4. How many things you considered blessings are secular (daily planned activities, sports, etc) that might take your focus from God?
5. Was there something today that caused you to miss Mass or to spend time in prayer?
6. Which of your blessings brought peace today?
STEP FOUR: FORGIVENESS. “I ask for the healing touch of the
forgiving God who, with love and respect for me, removes my heart’s burdens.”
1. If you are like me, you will find glaringly obvious things that you should have skipped! A naughty word, a temper flare, an unkind act or word or a mis-placed thought.
a. Acknowledge each one of them and ask forgiveness.
2. Is there something happening frequently that you would like to stop doing?
a. What action steps could you take in gratitude for forgiveness?
3. Forgiveness is forever available through penance, confession with a priest. This is the sacrament that brought me to the Catholic Church because God knows we are human and not perfect.
God and Faith are not complicated. He will always be there, even when you try to push Him away.
STEP FIVE: TRANSITION
I will complete this introduction to the Examen Prayer next time because there is a lot to take in. The final step helps you move on and onto the work of God. By completing the prior steps 1-4, you will understand how to transition to the next day, week, month and year.

EDUCATION COMMISSIONChair: Linda Adams
something you have neglected. This is the best stress relief you will
ever find: You are talking directly to God, you are taking inventory of things you should be aware of, you are given an opportunity to appreciate people you take for granted and IT’S FREE!
STEP TWO REVIEW: 1. Did you figure out why these
blessings are in your life? People, especially, are put on your path deliberately for you to receive their blessings. You may never know for sure what that was, but you can bet that God was working in the background.
2. Was there something that stood out that you had overlooked? I found a name that I had not thought of in a long time. When I contacted her, it was an amazing reunion!
3. Did you remember someone because they had helped you in some way?
4. Were you able to look at a ‘big picture’ of your life and find God there?
5. In what ways do your children bring blessings? Other members of your family?
It really is important to finish these first two steps before moving on. The practice of examen begins when the foundational desire of our hearts is to “seek and find the divine will in the disposition of our lives.”
STEP THREE: A CLOSER LOOK “With my God, I review the day. I
look for the stirrings in my heart and the thoughts that God has given me this day. I look also for those that have not been of God. I review my choices in response to both, and throughout the day in general.”
1. Were you able during the entire day to speak only kind words? If so,
Getting Closer to God
1. Recite the Guardian Angel Prayer!
2. The Story of the Ichthys, or ‘the fish symbol. The letters of ichthys are an acronym for ‘fish’ in the Greek language. Legend has it that Chris-tians would draw half the fish, and if the party they are talking to complete the diagram, then it is a secret code that they, too, believe in Christianity!
the Commander to determine how the morale of his soldiers were. It was always amazing to stand-down from a vigorous field exercise and have mass.
There have been some outstanding Chaplains over the years that have gone above and beyond the call of duty with minis-tering to soldiers. Once such Chaplain was Father Emil J. Kapaun, a Roman Catholic priest and United States Army Captain who served as a chaplain during World War II and the Korean War. Father Kapaun ministered to the dead and dying while performing baptisms, hearing confessions, offering Holy Communion, and celebrating Mass from an improvised altar set up on the front end of a jeep.
Father Kapaun was captured and taken prisoner by Chinese soldiers on November 2, 1950. He along with other soldiers taken prisoners marched 87 miles to a military prison camp in North Korea. Father Kapaun was instrumental with persuading his fellow prisoners to carry the wounded along this journey. At the camp he gave away his own food while raising the morale among the prisoners. He was noted among his fellow prisoners as one who would steal coffee and tea from the guards to distribute to his fellow prisoners.
Father Kapaun developed a blood clot in one of his legs besides having dysentery and pneumonia. Weakened as the months passed, he managed to lead Easter sunrise service on Sunday, March 25, 1951. He finally became so weak that the prison guards took him to a place within the camp called the “hospital”, which was really a place where prisoners were left alone without any help to die. With malnutrition and pneumonia, Father Kapaun died on May 23, 1951 and buried in a mass grave.
He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2013 for his actions in Korea. But more glorious, in 1993, Pope John Paul II declared Father Kapaun “Servant of God”, the first stage on the path to canon-ization.

Many times, over the years you contemplate and recall certain dates in one’s life to include birthdays, anniversaries, etc. This past month I recalled when I first entered the Army as a young private heading off to Basic Combat Training, 21 June 1974, and subsequently becoming a 2nd Lieutenant on 19 May 1979. In both cases, all enlistees and officers must take an oath of office which always begins with, I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.
And with that oath in which you beseech God, you join an organi-zation, the United States Army, founded on 14 June 1775. As you progress through the ranks as an officer or Non-Commissioned Officer, there are certain duties and responsibilities that you undertake that include not only preparing your soldiers for combat but also for their health, safety and wellbeing.
There is one branch of the military that is vital with assisting with the well-being of soldiers. That is the Army Chaplain Corps. Their mission is to provide religious support to America’s Army not only during combat and peacetime but also coordinating/directing a full program of religious ministries that include workshops, pastoral counseling, religious education, and other activ-ities.
I can remember very vividly all the support that the Chaplain Corps provided to the soldiers and their families with assisting in their well-being. It was always amazing while out on maneuvers in which you were tired, hungry, and worn out when suddenly the Battalion/Brigade Chaplain would appear out of no where and bring some encouragement and prayers. The Chaplain was the eyes and ears of
DEACONS’ CORNER
There is an annual Father Kapaun pilgrimage which begins at the Church of the Magdalen in Wichita, Kansas and ends with the Father Kapaun Day Mass at 11:00 am in Pilsen Kansas that my wife Lusica and I participated in June 2017. Pilgrims walk 60 miles over four days while camping at night. The walk includes daily Mass and times for confessions. Every 2-3 miles of the walk there is a pause for Father Kapaun Stations: reflection on different aspects of Fr. Kapaun’s life. Portions of the walk are dedicated to group rosaries and silence, while the rest is great time for discussion and meeting new people.
Servant of God Emil Kapaun stated - “How many times does not Holy Mother Church tell us that our life on this earth is a journey? This earth is not our lasting home. God created us for a higher, a much more perfect home, our home in heaven with the joy of God”.
And as within a soldier’s oath of office, “So help me God”, Servant of God – Father Emil J. Kapaun, fulfilled his oath by making the ultimate sacrifice in support of his soldiers, his fellow prisoners, and inspires all of us for a more perfect home with God!
Blessings – Dcn Jim

continued from front coverWorship Commission, I have decided that we can once again offer the opportunity for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Fridays from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, beginning on Friday, July 10. We want to provide the opportunity for the faithful to pray in the presence of the Lord. Given the situation, many people do not wish to increase the risk of contagion by attending Mass on the weekend. Some have decided that the smaller attendance during weekday Masses would allow them to participate with less risk. Since Adoration would in general have few people attend, Friday Exposition and Adoration would afford one more chance for people to access the grace than comes from being in His Presence.
For Exposition and Adoration to take place, we require people to commit to an hour of Adoration on Fridays. I would never want to obligate anyone to commit. Everyone must make their own decisions based on what is optimal for their own health and the health of others, but I especially put out an appeal to the younger members of our congregation and to those who have no significant health concerns that increase the risk of serious illness from COVID-19.
We have a long way to go in managing the pandemic. That means we monitor our own health, minimize contact with others, and stay home if we may have been exposed. We will continue to enforce the use of masks in church, and we will be vigilant about hand hygiene and sanitizing surfaces. If you wish to participate in Adoration on Fridays, you will need to be able to keep to this protocol.
Again, for us to provide for Exposition and Adoration, we need a minimum of people to commit to the hours between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM. Please email Debbie Noland, the coordinator for Prayer and Devotions, at [email protected]. I know that people still long for the comforting presence of the Eucharist yet still are not able to come in person. Your participation can be offered up for their health, wellbeing, and spiritual good.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, we entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick.
At the foot of the Cross, you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith.
Patroness of the Diocese of Jefferson City, you know what we need.
We are certain of the power of your intercession, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us.
He who taught us to “love one another, as I have loved you” took our sufferings upon Himself and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection.
Bring under your mantel of protection all who provide care for the sick and minister to their needs, as your Son implores us to do for one another.
V. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God.
R. Do not despise our pleas and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
