    Message from Fr. Joe

This weekend we begin a new Liturgical Year with the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of the season in which Christians throughout the whole world prepare for

the celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus. Yes, Advent is a season of preparation, waiting, and HOPE… hope for the birth of Christ and hope for the second coming and glorious return of the Lord in the fullness of time.

My dear parishioners, during this pandemic we need this gift of hope that only Christ can give. Our hope in Christ gives us the blessed assurance that all the struggles

we are experiencing during these trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic will one day

come to pass. This is our prayer, this is our wish and this is our hope.

And so, on this First Sunday of Advent as we light the first candle of the Ad-vent Wreath that signifies our “Hope” in the coming of Christ, let us also “Hope” and ask

the Lord to heal those who are sick and affected with the pandemic. Let us also “Hope”

and pray that this pandemic will come to an end so that we can move on with our lives

    without fear and isolation.

Lastly, may we ask Christ for the Light of Hope to be upon us so that we too can bring that Light of Hope to those who are lost and to those who live in darkness.

Today’s readings remind us that waiting for the Lord is not a

passive exercise. Isaiah prays that God “might meet us doing

right,” rejecting our sinful ways. Jesus warns his disciples that

they must keep watch, because, like servants not knowing when

the lord of the house will return, we don’t want to be asleep

when we should be ready to receive him. Paul assures the Co-

rinthians that they “are not lacking in any spiritual gift” as they

wait. Let the word of God inspire us to prepare our hearts for

    his arrival.

    Look for God During Advent

Try to prepare for, reconnect with, and center on

    the expected Savior during Advent.

    The Advent Wreath

Traditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a

circle of evergreen branches into which four candles are

inserted, representing the four weeks of Advent. Ideally,

three candles are purple and one is rose, but white can-

    dles can also be used.

The purple candles symbolize the prayer, penance,

and preparatory sacrifices and good works undertaken at

this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, also

known as Gaudete Sunday when the priest wears rose

vestments during Mass. Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday

of rejoicing, because we are at the midpoint of Advent,

when our preparations are half over and we are close to

    Christmas.

On the first Sunday of Advent the appropriate Advent

prayer can be said as the candle is lit each day of the

week, followed by the blessing before meals, if you use

the wreath at meal time. The second Sunday two purple

candles are lit; the third Sunday, two purple and one

rose; and all candles are lit on the fourth Sunday.

    Prayer for Lighting

    The First Advent Candle

In the darkness we light a flame of hope. May it shine not only

upon our Advent Wreath but within each of our hearts as well.

Hope is the flower that blooms from the ground of faith. And

so with joy we keep the tradition of ages past as we encircle

our Advent Wreath with love and prayerful expectation. May

this Advent Season bring us a new birth of hope in the ancient

    promises of God. Amen.

    Hope

give a child according to their age and needs.

There will be a drop off box available in the Parish Of-

fice Parking Lot starting on Wednesday, December 9th

through Friday December 11th from 9:00 AM to 3:00

PM, weather permitting. No gifts will be accepted after

Bishop O’Connell: Proposed legislation targets most vulnerable human life

Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M., Bishop of Trenton

The proposed New Jersey “Reproductive Freedom Act” (S3030 / A4848) is another legislative attempt to advance and expand the state’s “abortion agenda” in service to the widespread “culture of death” by eliminating the few remaining state

regulations intended to protect the life and health of pregnant mothers.

New Jersey already has some of the most permissive abortion legislation in the country. The “Reproductive Freedom

Act,” if passed, would guarantee a woman’s right to an abortion anywhere in the State of New Jersey. That is the “freedom” it

    seeks to legislate.

Eleanor Roosevelt once wrote, “Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes great

responsibility.” The freedom to deliberately terminate at will and with full legal protection the life of an unborn child in the

womb brings with it a responsibility, an accountability, that is difficult to imagine, let alone justify.

The State of New Jersey has already legislated its disregard for human life from conception to natural death many times,

last year approving the “Death with Dignity Act” to help accelerate the end of life. The current proposed legislation, under the

guise of “reproductive freedom,” shifts that disregard to the earliest, most vulnerable stages of human life in the womb.

How many such deaths has that “freedom” brought in the United States since Roe v. Wade? How many more deaths will

this legislation bring about in New Jersey? With the freedom to terminate innocent human life in the womb, who bears respon-

    sibility? Whose life is next?

    November 19, 2020

    Please oppose

    “Reproductive Freedom Act”

On October 5th, the New Jersey Bishops released a statement rejecting the recent announcement of New Jersey to enact

a “Reproductive Freedom Act.” This legislation would make abortion legal in all nine months of pregnancy, remove any con-

science protection laws for the doctors and nurses involved and make it mandatory for all New Jersey insurance companies to

cover the abortions. The Bishops, in their statement said, “We urge all Catholics and people of good will to reject this pro-

posed legislative initiative in our State and to contact your State Legislators to vigorously express opposition to its passage.”

To reach our State Legislators call or email them asking them to vigorously oppose its passage.

    Pope Francis’ Prayer to Mary

    During Coronavirus Pandemic

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a

sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust

ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at

the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping

your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman

People, know what we need, and we are sure

you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy

and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine

Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by

Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our

sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection.

    Amen.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not

disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every

    danger, O glorious blessed Virgin.

    PRAYER FOR HEALING AND

    PROTECTION AMIDST COVID-19 CRISIS

Lord Jesus, at your command, the sick were made well! Come to

our aid now, in the midst of the Global spread of the Corona Virus,

that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the Virus. May they regain their

strength. Heal us from our fear, which prevents us from working

together and with one another. Heal us from our pride, which can

make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Stay by our side in this time of uncertainty, sorrow and fear. Be

with those who died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in

peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As

they worry or grieve, defend them from illness and despair.

Be with the medical professionals who seek to heal and put

themselves at risk in the process. Be with the leaders of all nations,

give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the

    wellbeing of everyone.

Lord, stay with us as some of us mourn, as many of us try to

endure, persist, struggle and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give

    us your peace.

Lord Jesus Christ, heal us and protect us. Amen

    www.ourladyqop.org or Facebook

Lord, when did I see you sick?

The message from the lips of Jesus is clear, “Amen I say to you, when-

ever you did this for the least of My brethren, you did it for

    Me.” (Matthew 25:40)

We often reflect on how we might reach out to others in the love of

God. Virtua Health is inviting you to find out opportunities we offer to

touch the lives of our Catholic patients who are sick and hospitalized.

We currently have a phone call ministry in which you will be able to

do just that. As part of this ministry you would reach out by phone and

offer a listening ear and, if they are open to it, lend support, pray, or

even lead the patient in a Spiritual Communion prayer. We provide

    training for you.

to make phone calls and to be there for others, please contact Chaplain
