So one has to wonder: how much o that reserve is let?  The reserve balance is in place to help pay or  various projects, and there are numerous reserves such as ones or potable water, fre protection, sanitary sewer, garbage, roads, cemetery, the Fam- ily Centre, sewer conveyance and general enorce- ment. Each responsibility centre will oten have a certain amount o reserve unds in order to meet some uture or unexpected needs. When unds are drawn rom the fnancial stabilization reserve, it is because there is not a specifc reserve that the project can be allocated to or there may not be sufcient reserve unds in a particular category. “When an expenditure is not in the budget, in the current 2013 budget, it enables the town to carry out a particular project and have it unded out o the fnancial stabilization. Rather than not do a specifc (project) and meet a specifc need, money is set-aside or that specifc purpose, to meet unplanned needs. Not every need can be planned,” said Mel Tiede, director o corporate services or the town.  The fnancial stabilization balance at the end o 2012 was $2,704,000, which is taken rom the audited fnancial statement. The total operating reserves is $5,483,000 - roughly 50 per cent o op - erating reserves. In addition to that, said Tiede, the town has ap- proximately $3 million o capital reserves or a to- tal o almost $8.5 million in reserve balances at the end o 2012. The fnancial stabilization is close to 30 per cent o overall reserves.  The town has an operating budget o $25 mil- lion or 2013, so this reserve is roughly 10 per cent o the yearly budget.  Approximately 95 per cent or more o the needs are met by the operating budget, but there are some things that don’t all within the scope o the  budget. “All expenditures made by a town are to be cov- ered by budget or unded in some way, shape or orm, and i it is not in the budget, it has to come out o reserves because we can’t send out subse- quent tax bills. We can’t go back to the taxpayer and say, ‘By the way, pony up another $100 be- cause we had these unplanned expenses’,” said  Tiede.  The only way the use o the unding could a ect and increase taxes into the next year would be i council chose to shore up the reserve. However, they haven’t done that or a number o years. November is Family Violence Pre- vention Month in Alberta, and theCommunity Crisis Society is busy pre-paring or their annual charity dinner and auction, set or Nov. 2. This year marks the 20th anniver-

sary o the society. It all began whena group o men and women met withthe goal o making a positive contri-

bution to the community. The groupshared the belie that everyone should

be able to live without abuse or thethreat o abuse, and so the society wascreated, dedicated to providing shel-ter, counselling and reerral services to

survivors o abuse.“We really try to make [the shelter]

as homey as possible while they stay here, but we’re so much more than

just a shelter. We run a public educa-tion program and outreach servicesor both adults and children. You don’thave to have stayed here to utilize our support, reerrals and advocacy,” saidExecutive Director Karen Pease.

Pease said the Society’s servicesinclude the 25-bed shelter which in-cludes rooms or amilies to stay to-gether; a 24-hour crisis line; and ser-

vices or men, although that serviceis currently only available in Drum-heller with the hope o expanding into

Strathmore. The annual dinner and auction onNov. 2 will eature both a live and si-lent auction. Some o the items up or

auction include a helicopter ride, andan autographed Calgary Stampeders jersey. Pease said there are also many  beautiul, unique and useul silent auc-tion items available. In addition, two

WestJet tickets to anywhere the airlinefies will be rafed o or $20 each.Pease warns there will only be a lim-ited number o tickets printed or therafe. The goal or this year’s event is to

raise $78,000, which will be used tooset operating costs and to upgradeand update some o the acility needs.

“We are not ully unded or all o our operational needs. That’s why thisevent not only (raises) awareness, butit also helps us continue the level o

service that we have provided,” saidPease. The charity dinner and auction also

allows the Crisis Society the chanceto thank the community while lettingpeople know what the society is up toeach and every year, all while provid-ing an evening o entertainment andgood company. Tickets are on sale or $50 each. To

purchase tickets online, go to www.strathmoreshelter.com and click onevents. Anyone wishing to donate tothe auction can do so by emailing [email protected].

Stay tuned or the Red Rose Cam-paign, which also goes in November. It’s when businesses and churches will

be asked i they would like to display arose in memory o all those who havelost their lives to domestic violence.

Many people might be experiencing morefrequent headaches due to the pain relievers theyare taking. This condition is called medication

overuse headache. The theory is that painsensation is reset and there is a rebound effectbetween doses. The way to stop this is to weanyourself off the drug slowly over a few months. Can be difcult but ironically can result in fewerheadaches.

There are many gourmet salts on the market. They are made differently but chemically theyare all the same. They contain sodium chloride. They are not healthier salts. Some salts makingthat claim substitute potassium or magnesiumfor some of the sodium so that could be called“healthier”.

Municipalities are required by law tohave a balanced budget. I budgeting isdone correctly, there should be a smallsurplus, which has typically happenedeach year. Tiede says that during his time with

the town, council has not shored up thefnancial stabilization reserve. However, the reserve does earn interest becauseit is held in investments. Although mar-ket interest rates are only at about twoper cent, Tiede says any allocated inter-

est earned is put back into the reserves.“The things that they’ve voted or,

taken rom fnancial stabilization, I re-ally have no concern about it becauseit’s a small percentage o our overall budget… and so i we might use sev-eral hundred thousand dollars in a year drawn rom fnancial stabilization, andcouncil votes that the need is needed,it’s a genuine need it should be lookedater,” said Tiede.

“Council is very careul and respon-sible in the way it approves the expen-diture o money.”

The Youth Club o Strathmore andStrathmore FCSS are bringing the frstannual Great Pumpkin Hunt to Kins-men Park on Oct. 26. From 2-4 p.m., ata cost o $5 per child, amilies can huntor a pumpkin.

“I fnd Halloween is a big holiday, i  you want to call it that, or kids so it just adds a little bit more excitementand it’s just something dierent to door the kids in Strathmore,” said Cath-erine Walsh, FCSS coordinator.

“On Oct. 26, they can come fnd their

pumpkin in Kinsmen Park and thenthey will have an opportunity to carveit i they want, and have hot chocolateand goodies.”

For the Youth Club, it was an easy decision to be involved.

“Our reason or doing this is wethought this would be an excellent op-portunity or us to collaborate with thetown and FCSS to provide some am-ily un events. Part o our mandate isto support children, youth and amiliesin our community through aordableprogramming; we are always lookingor new ways to do this,” said Shannon

Zieman, program director or the YouthClub.

“These events not only provide ami-lies with a un activity, but we are uti-lizing adult and youth volunteers in theset-up, delivery and take down or eachevent.” While many people enjoy their jack-

o-lanterns leading up to Halloween, once Nov. 1 rolls around, there is nolonger a use or them. That’s why the Youth Club and FCSS have also part-nered to host the frst Pumpkins in thePark event.

“On Nov. 1 we’re asking that (peo-ple) bring carved pumpkins and drop

them o at Kinsmen Park. We’ll havea designated area at Kinsmen Park or drop o anytime beore 4 p.m. We willget some volunteers together and we’regoing to set them up around the walk-ing path,” said Walsh. The jack-o-lanterns will then be lit or

people to enjoy, and there will again behot chocolate and goodies or anyone who comes out.

“It encourages people to do some-thing with their carved pumpkin be-cause most o the time people justthrow them out. That’s eventually what we’ll do as well, but it allows residents

The Great Pumpkin Huntto put them on display. Some peopleare really craty and artistic and (peo-ple will) have a chance to walk aroundthe park and see the dierent carv-ings,” said Walsh.

“It really is a way to include every-one and have un doing it. I’m hopingthese (events) are the start o a trend.Hopeully we can work together to puton more events and programs that will be accessible to all,” said Zieman.

During the Nov. 1 event, people arealso encouraged to bring a non-perish-able ood item, an unwrapped toy or acash donation or the Strathmore andDistrict Christmas Hamper Society.

The Youth Club o Strathmore is al- ways looking or suggestion o pro-grams or activities people would liketo see, or new event ideas. Anyone withsuggestions or questions can email theclub at [email protected]. Volunteers are needed or the Pump-

kins in the Park event. Anyone wish-ing to help out can contact DahrlyneKnaus at 403-934-9090.

Bad Was For CounCillor

 Here For You Today,

Working for Your Tomorrow

      e      l      e      C      t

x

My volunteer time serving on the various community

boards in Strathmore and my past experience as Town

Councillor have allowed me to see issues from a

community perspective.

As a successful farmer, a professional in the insurance

industry and as a safety instructor, I have acquired

the training and skills that will prove benecial to the

community.

I believe my son and daughter, along with other children

of the Town, are the future of this community. I deeply

believe that the Council of today has to plan for the future

of our children and youths who will take over tomorrow.

As a strong, forward thinker, my approach to Council is

to get things done for the people of Strathmore, to strive

for a strong budget and to keep the cost of living down.

Sometimes the people feel their voice is not heard. I

will strive to make your concerns a priority. I encourage

residents to come out and speak with me during my

campaign so that your concerns are uppermost in my

mind should I be successful in this election.

I would like to see partnerships among our Strathmore

organizations and our rural neighbours resulting in

services we can all enjoy.

To create a stable, strategic road map for the future of our

town, these issues need to be addressed:

Taxes

We are one of the higher tax paying communities around

Calgary. I would suggest that we review the budget and see

if there are areas where we can nd savings which we can

use to pay down our debt load.

Infrastructure

Maintain and improve our current road infrastructure, continue to develop bike paths, and investigate options for

possible water savings.

Planning

We need to continue to develop affordable housing for

our families. Proper planning through our Municipal

Government will decide where construction for homes,

businesses, industries and recreational facilities should go.

Co-operation

Working together, we can make Strathmore a vibrant

community!

I was raised in the Strathmore area and

am a very family oriented individual.

My wife, Chantel, and I have a

wonderful 6 year old daughter, Emma,

and a 19 month old son, Kaiden.

I am employed as a Training Instructor

for a local safety training school.

My volunteer efforts in the community

include:

• Strathmore Agricultural Society:

Vice-President

• Strathmore Lions: Director

• Community Crisis Shelter: Former

Board Chair

I was a Town Council appointed

member on:

• Wheatland Family Community

Support Services

• Wheatland and District Emergency

Medical Services (WADEMSA)

• United Way

• Strathmore Agricultural Society

My experience with Wheatland and

District Emergency Medical Services

Association has given me insight into

what is needed to keep Strathmore the

safe, caring and proactive community

it is today.

I was successfully elected Town

Councillor in 2007.

During that time, I helped accomplish:

• Addition of Wading Pool to Aquatic

Center

• Creation of the Skate Park

• Increased availability of affordable

housing

In 2010, I ran for mayor but could not

run for councillor simultaneously. I am

eager to resume my responsibilities as

councillor, if I am elected.

Letters to the editor

To the Editor Reading the local paper usually starts my day in

a positive way. Not so with the most recent edition where I read that an extensive rejuvenation has beenproposed or the Gleichen Cemetery. I am uncomort-able with technical aspects o the proposal, and withthe timing and presentation as well.

I am a senior and a long time resident o Gleichen.Several immediate relatives are buried in the ceme-tery, as I and some o my amily expect to be. Thus,I was oended by the apparent indierence toward

what I would consider correct protocol in commu-nicating and gathering opinion. In other words, theproposal has reached the stage o undraising beorea signifcant number o concerned people were evenaware that the project was being considered.

“What’s the problem?” you may well ask. The project will correct anomalies, and simpliy maintenance andadministration. There is undoubtedly merit and goodintention in the proposal. However, we shouldn’t haveto fnd out that decisions have been made or us, with-out consultation, in matters as sensitive as this.

On a more practical level, objections can be put or- ward as well. First, as an observer o many cemeteriesover 40 years or so in the feld, I can say that this parto our local culture stands up quite well, comparative-ly speaking. From an aesthetic point o view, anyone

driving by would see no great problem. Individualstructural issues have already been rectifed in many cases by the amilies concerned. In those cases wherethere is unawareness, indierence, or lack o any sur-

viving caretaker, there might be a problem. But this isthe unique nature o old cemeteries (look at photosrom all over the world). So in some cases the relevantauthority might well intervene where necessary; butto undertake an all-inclusive rejuvenation at consider-able expense is not the answer here, in my opinion.

My second pragmatic concern speaks to the matter

o priorities. We in Gleichen ace endemic problems, which while difcult, are not impossible. Aging inra-structure and well-documented social negatives havecontributed, but simple neglect is also an issue. So,resources held in trust or the taxpayer by the county should be used to most equitable advantage, and, inmy opinion, there are issues to be addressed whichare more pressing than the cemetery project.

Finally, just as it is a matter o choice or those who wish to support the project, those who would like toleave their amily plots as they are have an equal rightto choose.

Sincerely, Robert Barstad

Close to 150 residents flled the Strathmore Civic Centreon October 3, to amiliarize themselves with the extensiveline up o candidates running in the 2013 Strathmore mu-nicipal election.

Current Mayor, Steve Grajczyk is acing o against MichaelEll. Current Councillors Bob Sobol, Rocky Blokland, DaveHamilton, John Rempel and Pat Fule are running again,

while new candidates or council are Allan Auger, DougClarke, Mark Giesbrecht, John M. Whieldon and Brad Walls. Telisa Tebbutt and Denise Peterson are the two women can-didates running in this election. Currently, the council hasall male members. The credentials o all candidates range rom local busi-

ness persons, to educators, career proessionals, fnancialexperts and trades persons. Many have been raised or livedin Strathmore or many years and have amilies growing upin the community. Most o them have served with communi-ty service groups and social agencies. Several have a police background. During the orum, they all expressed their loveor the community and desire to give back as a reason or running in the election. The evening started with a one minute madness, with can-

didates admirably trying to dispatch as much inormation as

As a show o support or Small Business Week, the workshop Finders & Keepers: Employee Re-

cruitment Strategies is coming to Strathmore. The workshop is being brought in by a part-

nership with Bow Valley College (BVC), McBrideCareer Group, Community Futures Wild Rose, theStrathmore Chamber o Commerce and Alberta

Works, and is a Calgary Region economic partner-ship.

“Geared specifcally to employers and business-es, this workshop ocuses on recruitment strate-gies and recruitment planning processes,” said TeriMcKinnon, regional lead or education and busi-ness development or Bow Valley College.

“Participants will explore how to customize their

business approach to engage overlooked talentsources to maximize their hiring practices.”

McKinnon said that Alberta Works, Calgary re-gion, oers a number o employer workshops. The

workshops include revision and update o the con-

tent or the workshops, power point presentations, participant handouts and acilitator guides. Alberta

Works encourages local partnership and collabora-tion on the promotion, organization and delivery o these workshops in rural communities, said McKin-non. The workshop takes place on Oct. 22 at 85 Lake-

side Blvd. in BVC. Registration goes rom 3:30 p.m.to 4 p.m., and the workshop will run rom 4 p.m.to 6:30 p.m. with light rereshments to ollow. Toregister, contact McBride Career Group at 403-934-4305 or by email at [email protected].

possible in a one minute time period. The con-tent was airly consistent across the board withcandidates touching on their accomplishments, advocating curbed fnancial spending and taxes, encouraging development o commercial and in-dustrial development, advocating residential de- velopment with upgrades to roads, promising at-tention to senior’s issues, health care and hospitalprotection, and developing recreational activity. This was ollowed by questions delivered rom

the audience. Due to the large amount o content, summaries o answers are as ollows:

CiviC revitalization and taxes: Ell rec-ommended improvement o curb appeal and o-ering tax incentives or business development. Antonisse thought strategic road signs wouldincrease business downtown. Tebbutt advocatedimproving communication use by marketing andusing technological media to promote Strath-more. Clarke proposed graduated scales o taxa-tion or dierent income levels o businesses. So- bol indicated that change would be supported by changing attitudes towards the project. Fule saidincreased residential population and events in thedowntown core would stimulate the downtown. Whieldon disagreed listing denser population sta-tistics indicate greater crime rates. He counteredheritage buildings and a change to commercialtaxation would bring benefts.

City vs town: Candidates that answered whether Strathmore’s should move to city status were proportionally split between the positiveand negative. Grajczyk agreed it should, but de-erred to the majority o voters who didn’t wantit. Ell said the town could grow without beinga city and there were advantages to maintain-ing a warm and riendly town atmosphere. Gies- brecht thought city status had economic devel-opment advantages, which would increase jobsand growth. Peterson said there were pro’s andcon’s that needed to be weighed and a plebisciteshould be conducted on the issue, questioningthings like the cost o policing and providingsocial services. She said Drumheller and Hannatried it and it didn’t produce results. Brad Walls

said keeping traditions and rural roots alive wasimportant to Strathmore residents and the rami-fcations o moving to city status needed to beconsidered. reCreation offiCer vs eConomiC de-

velopment offiCer: There was debate over

which was a more valuable asset. Those currently serving on council supported the recreation of-cer position, based on the signifcantly increasedevents in town that provide something or resi-dents and bring money in or businesses. Ell,Giesbrecht, Auger and Walls said an economicdevelopment ofcer would be eective by hav-ing ocused time to develop business, commercialand industrial growth partnerships.

water and utility Costs: Auger suggest-

ed a second meter or outside watering, so extrasewage ees weren’t charged. Whieldon inormedthe public o a home tracking bud that could beinstalled in pipes to measure sewage use. Rempelindicated that Council should invest back into theresidential irrigation line. Grajczyk said the townhas invested in the plant and the water lines andthere isn’t much that can be done to reduce costs. He said town residents are essentially payingdouble or uture users cost. The town is lockedinto various utility contracts and many thoughtthere were no solutions to high rates. Brad Wallssaid there needs to be some creative thinking toexamine possible solutions and a tax base devel-oped to deer costs.

Collaborate efforts: All candidatesasked said that more collaboration was needed between all levels o community, business, or-ganizations and political entities. Antonisse saiddamaged external relationships could be restored. library expansion:  There was general

support or a library expansion. Gracjczyk saidthey need it, but there is no money. Ell suggest-ed undraising eorts and securing community grants. Blokland said to work with owners o suitable empty buildings downtown and modiy them or the library. Fule agreed with Blokland, but said more money was needed, and could begained through increased provincial unding andincreased per capita unding. Peterson said thereneeded to be a shit in mentality, as literacy wasthe great equalizer and she advocated private-public-political partnerships. Clarke said a new library could be designed as a part o a commu-nity recreation centre, or City hall. Walls said li-

braries build educated amilies, who in turn buildstrong communities. Whieldon also supported thelibrary’s role in child development initiatives.

Several more orums are being planned prior toelection. Watch or announcements in subsequentissues o the Strathmore Times .

At the beginning o this year, the Alberta Leg-islature voted on what will be included in a new time capsule, which will be opened in 100 years.

A variety o items were decided upon, includingpennies and letters written by Alberta students.Crowther Memorial Junior High (CMJHS) studentBrooke Paiha is one o eight students in the prov-ince whose letter was picked or the capsule. OnSept. 25, she was in Edmonton or the time cap-sule ceremony, where she was also chosen to readher letter or the crowd.

“That was really scary because it was broadcast-ed, so I was really nervous,” said Paiha.

“It was actually really exciting; I was pretty ex-cited that I was the only one who got to speakabout my letter.” Alysia Bailey gave the assignment to the stu-

dents asking them to write their letters in our sections. Paiha said it was to be written about what’s happening now, uture predictions, whatthey want and what they hope to happen.

While writing her letter, Paiha thought o all theaspects she wants or her uture and or genera-tions to come.

“There are a lot o issues that people have with just silly things in society right now, like with rac-ism and things like that, that’s still happening; allthose kinds o issues that seem so irrelevant but we have issues with. I just think that we should,in 100 years rom now, be able to walk down thestreet and not have people judge us or what welook like and what we’re wearing,” said Paiha.

Bailey, a language arts and social studies teacher at CMJHS, was excited when she heard the newsthat Paiha’s letter was chosen or the provincialtime capsule.

“I was extremely proud o her. In act, when Igot the notice that her letter was chosen, I went

and ound her in her gym class, then shared theinormation with her and we were both jumpingup and down with excitement,” said Bailey. “It wasn’t until later we ound out she was going toread a portion o her letter at the ofcial ceremo-

Becoming a partof history

ny and that just made the experience even morememorable.

“This was a great opportunity or her,” she add-ed. “Brooke consistently works hard and it was very special to see her get recognized or her cre-ativity and dedication. I am very ortunate to havehad the opportunity to teach her.” Though the letter is being buried anonymous-

ly, Paiha hopes that maybe her uture children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren willhave the opportunity to hear the words she wrote.

“That’s pretty cool or me to think about, it justseems so neat to think that my letter is going to be a part o history. It’s just kind o a neat way to think about it because I really really want my uture grandchildren to be there to open that upand know that I wrote it,” said Paiha. Taylor Peier and Brenna Jolly, who attend

Sarah Thompson Elementary School in Langdon, were also in attendance at the ceremony. Both o their letters are being included in the time cap-sule, and Jolly was also given the opportunity toread rom her letter during the ceremony.

sta Kippin, Rebecca Grudeski, Jason Wilson and Britney Davidson all spokeabout their time at the conerence.

Each were asked the same ques-tion, beginning with explaining whotheir avourite speaker was. For Shay-la Kopp, the speaker that stood outspoke about living in the moment, making good choices and not holding yoursel back.

“I think my avourite speaker would be Phil Boyt because I have heard him beore and he was even better I thinkthis time,” said Kippin.

“I (also) really liked (General) RickHillier, he was a speaker, because Iliked his idea that you can’t just lead, people aren’t just going to ollow you, you have to give them a reason.”

Ian Tyson was Grudeski’s avouritespeaker

“I just really connected to what he was saying. There was a point to bemade that was more relatable to peo-ple,” said Grudeski.

For Wilson, General Rick Hillier was

also his avourite speaker.“I just liked his message … his mes-

sage was inspire somebody and thenonce you have inspired them use their inspiration to motivate yoursel,” said Wilson.

“One o the ones I really liked wasIan Tyson because he just got every- body kind o involved and made itmore personal or you. It made you lis-ten more and understand what he wastrying to say,” said Davidson.

All fve students took a dierent les-son home rom the conerence.

“I did a course on how to organize yearbook. They taught us how youshould get everyone together and how  you should run the meetings … so that was really cool,” said Kopp.

“I learned about dierent styles o leadership, how you don’t have to beloud and standing on a table with amicrophone to lead, which is good or me because I am not that kind o per-son,” said Kippin.

“I think it is more a lot o little thingsthat you do, it’s like whether or not you are willing to help people when you see that they need it.”

Kippin belongs to the Me To We clubat SHS where she is in a leadership po-sition. She eels better prepared now and less anxious about her role withthe club.

Since returning rom P.E.I Grudes-ki says she has begun noticing whenpeople need help, both at school and work, and she tries to help them how-

ever she can. Wilson eels the workshops he at-

tended at the conerence gave himideas on dierent ways the schoolcould become more o a community instead o sticking to cliques.

“I think the conerence just remind-ed me that you don’t have to do bigthings to be a leader. (The) little thingsthat you do, little kind things or oth-ers, you’re being a leader everyday,”said Davidson.

Last year, TELUS promised WheatlandCounty councillors that unburied landlines in the county would be placed ona priority work schedule to bury thelines. To date, the lines still remain un-

buried and continue to be a hazard.“A resident said she was told by TELUSthat it would be 2017 beore the linesare put into the ground,” said Council-lor Berniece Bland. “Skateboarders arecurrently ipping over the lines and itis a saety hazard.”

Other councillors confrmed the linesin their divisions were still not buriedeither. The problem has been ongoingor several decades.

“In any business you have an end to what you start,” said Councillor Ben Armstrong. “Not here….you have to usea brush cutter just to fnd the lines now.

They want the property owners to do itthemselves. They are relying on it.”

Councillor Brenda Knight said, “They

are delaying because technology haschanged.”

She suspects TELUS is hoping every-one will switch to cell service.

However, during last year’s meeting,it was stated there are many areas in

Wheatland County that can’t get celltower transmissions. TELUS promisedthat once booster towers were built, everyone could have phone service viaa cell phone. There are many county residents who use both. They preer tohave a land line as backup, or do not

want to purchase a cell phone. They arepaying or land line service and part o the service includes burial o exposedlines. Councillors did not indicate whataction they would take to readdress the

issue with TELUS.

Cenovus baCks out

of agreement

Wheatland County council approvedimplementing a site penalty clause onprojects, such as the shared road con-struction projects, to prevent situations

like the joint undertaking by the coun-ty and Cenovus, in the Dalum area o RR195.

Cenovus agreed to contribute to therebuilding o the road near their plant, due to increased trafc rom the site.

They are still using the road. However, Dave Churchill, Wheatland

County transportation and inrastruc-ture manager, said that Cenovus has

withdrawn their oer to contribute tothe project.

“We had preapproval or the recon-struction and spent $35,000 on the engi-neering and design specifcations,” saidChurchill.

Churchill said they will put the road work back on the improvement list, but

wanted direction rom council on how to handle the withdrawal.

“It is something they asked or andthey should honour their commitment,|”said Councillor Ben Armstrong.

Churchill recommended implement-ing a site bonus or penalty clause, on

work completed early or delayed, tosimilar shared projects in the uture.

The clause is standard in work contractstendered out by the County, and he sug-gested it be extended to uture shared

work agreements as well. Armstrongsuggested meeting with Cenovus to dis-cuss the issue. Council suggested thatmeasures, such as road bans, may needto be taken to reduce heavy truck trafcon the road until the road can be fxed.

Quality or Quantity

 for sludge results

Wheatland County Councillor Don Vander Velde has been felding questionsabout the quality o the irrigation sludgetaken rom the Carseland lagoon andcontracted to armers or their felds. Hesaid some o the armers are disappoint-

ed with the results o using the product.Farmers have told Vander Velde thecounty product doesn’t seem to give asgood results as the product deliveredrom the Calgro provider out o Calgary, and the county product is not as nutri-ent rich as Calgro’s.

“It is a completely dierent product,”said Churchill.

“We use lagoons and they add extranutrients to their sludge.”

Churchill said the county product isa somewhat lower grade, but resultsmight improve or armers i they in-creased the application cycle.

Cluny effluent ContraCt

A new agreement was signed with a

landowner in Cluny to pay $500 or e-uent that irrigates his land. There pre-

viously was no contract. The new con-tract ensures limits and conditions will

be met and it runs or 20 years with areview every fve years or the term o the agreement. Wheatland County hasthe frst right o reusal i the landowner decides to sell the property.

 disappearing mailbox

Road work has displaced some o theLyalta community mailboxes and resi-dents are worried they have disappearedpermanently. According to Churchillthe boxes have been moved to an area

by the Log Cabin and will be replaced when work has been completed.

In a meeting with Minister Ric McIver, Wheat-land County representatives were told that expect-ed money or water inrastructure projects may becut in hal. While cutbacks were expected, giventhe province’s recent cutbacks to many programallocations, the news is generating speculationon the repercussions or Wheatland County andthe Wheatland Regional Water Partnership. The

Wheatland Regional Water Partnership water li-cense expires in January 2015, and the delay inunding may delay building projects up to three

years. The Standard water treatment plant expansion

is expected to cost about $2.5 million and Glei-chen’s will cost approximately $4 million. While Wheatland County managers said some

aspects o the county water projects could goahead, they didn’t think it would allow or a

backup system i there were operation problems. Alternate measures could be used until the new acilities were in place, such as the use o portableplants or clariying products, settling tanks, ultra-

violet treatment and extra chlorine or the shortterm, but as a long term measure it was deemedunsatisactory. There will be no health issues or processing the water in that manner, but odour and taste may be aected.

“I know there are issues in Gleichen, but the water is sae. The issue is meeting the provincialcodes,” said County Reeve Glenn Koester. “Oneregulation change put orward by Alberta Envi-ronment caused the shutdown o seven plants un-til they met minimal standards.”

Koester said the unding cut leaves the county  with a huge investment obligation and puts ex-tra burdens on the villages. He commented that

Alberta Environment set out the regulations that bumped up the costs o these plants, and whenthe nal bill is presented to the province or im-plementation they reject the unding.

Councillors were not pleased with the cuts.“This is not acceptable,” said Councillor Ken

Sauve. “We need to put pressure on them to getthis done. We can’t go on sitting on the ence. Wehave to push and push hard.”

“Funding is crucial. We have to decide. We werelooking to move on this ve years ago,” said Coun-cillor Ben Armstrong. Wheatland County has been asking or help

with water issues or over a decade.

Planners said they could look or other optionsand unding mechanisms, or ask the Minister or a year grace period on the licensing; so unds can

be generated and the project completed. Council-lor Alice Booth suggested planners look to Fed-eral unding or grants. Councillor Berneice Blandcommented that money should be cut rom lesscritical areas, not essential inrastructure projects.

Council asked sta to set up a meeting withrepresentatives o the Wheatland Regional Wa-ter Partnership. Koester said they needed to nd

ways to move ahead, modiy the plan or petitionthe government or a grace period or concessionson unding.

McIver was also asked about modications onthe Hwy 1 and 24 intersections and WheatlandCouncil was again asked to wait or any action.McIver said he wants to determine i the Calgary

ring road completion will take some o the tracfow and divert it to the 22X. He elt it may easethe current bottleneck that occurs with truck tra-c. He suggested that an additional lane might not

be in the works or 10 to 15 years. Councillors eltthe lane was needed as trucks with B-train trailersdo not currently have enough room to saely turnonto the Highway and crossing the east boundtrac increases delays and risk or accidents. Dar-rell Camplin, Southern Regional TransportationManager told council representatives the accidentstatistics were still low, however installing fashinglights and widening the shoulder lane may be astop gap measure. The suggestion was made thathigh haul trac and pilot cars could be reroutedto improve fow. It was questioned whether traccould be diverted to utilize Glenmore Trail.

Councillors countered that the number o ac-cidents at the Hwy #1 and Hwy #24 intersection was not high, but the severity o accidents occur-ring at the intersection warranted attention. They elt the residents o Langdon would not want theincreased truck trac moving through the Glen-more Trail intersection. There was the option o

blocking o the current access and developing acost share program or six miles o service road.

With the cost o $1 million per mile o road con-struction, it was thought to be a more economicalsolution than the $20 million needed or amend-ing the intersection.

Councillors said they would monitor both situa-tions, prepare more inormation and discuss bothissues with the Minister again.

At the Oct. 1 council meeting, WheatlandCounty council was presented a copy o the2014-2018 Corporate Strategic Plan. Theplan shows a breakdown o goals, and stra-tegic activities to achieve those goals withineach county department.

Plans such as these are used and recom-mended or use by many major organiza-tions to improve eciency and clarity with-in the organization.

“In regards to strategic thinking andplans, I can say this … without strate-gic plans organizations are less likely toachieve their objectives. Our organization’sobjective is to provide services or our citi-zens, which are clearly dened in the planapproved by council. This document is aliving document, and perormance will bemeasured against it throughout the coming years to ensure success,” said WheatlandCounty Chie Administrative Ocer (CAO) Alan Parkin.

The document’s vision statement states itis to provide consistent, accountable, inno-

vative governance. The plan states that Wheatland County is

committed to identiying the needs o thecommunity, while providing services andsustainable long-term growth opportuni-ties that refect our agricultural heritage. In the plan, they hope to provide eectiveand accountable government, response tocustomer needs, show integrity and proes-sionalism, encourage teamwork and orga-nizational development, and increase sta recruitment, promotion and employee re-tention.

Many o the activities remain constantthroughout the years, however there arenew projects dened as well. Parkin saidinitiatives will be made public in council as

the plan evolves.

“In past organizations, I have ensuredthat a monthly update o progress on theplan is included in the council packageand I intend to do the same starting in Feb-ruary o 2014; so that progress is tracked, measured, and reported regularly to coun-cil and all citizens o Wheatland County. This document will guide our sta in mov-ing orward on our plan, but council can

adjust it when the need arises,” said Parkin. Badlands amBulance

turnover complete

Councillor Ben Armstrong advised coun-cil that the Badlands Ambulance ServiceSociety had completed arrangements orthe Alberta Health Services takeover. The$93,691 invested by the municipality or itsadministration was returned to the munici-pality with $1,000 reserved or completiono last minute payments. Any money letover in that buer will be turned over toSTARS. The municipality ound that it wasnot economically easible to continue oper-ating the service. Wheatland and District Emergency Medi-

cal Association Services (WADEMSA) may be acing a similar decision, i Alberta

Health Services does not continue con-tract negotiations in good aith. Another sixmonth extension was given when the con-tract ran out at the end o September. Theextensions present signicant dicultiesor the service. The municipality is makingup the shortall in unding until a new con-tract is signed. County representatives havereservations on how long the municipality can continue to aord to pay $30,000 perquarter to maintain the service. A meet-ing on Oct. 9th held at the county oce isscheduled to review strategies and optionsacing the service.

“We are still hopeul, but have reserva-tions about entering into another six monthextension with them using money rom our

bank account,” said Reeve Glenn Koester.

A near miss accident occurring just beore theintersection o TNSP 252 and RR 265, prompted a Wheatland County ratepayer to call or a our way stop sign. A vehicle with two passengers recently slid through the intersection, while attempting to

brake to a stop that caused the vehicle to rolland enter the ditch. Fire and emergency crewsrom Strathmore Rural and Rockyview County re-sponded. The Wheatland County ratepayer said when he looked at the wreckage, he consideredthe occupants were lucky to be alive. The topic o speed occurring through this par-

ticular intersection has been mentioned severaltimes in county council meetings. The trafc picksup in the summer with people heading to the Ly-alta ball diamonds and community hall. The northand south access have stop signs posted, but theratepayer suggested a our way stop would orcetrafc to slow down. A visual inspection indicatedthat vegetation straddled a landowner’s property and the county road allowance.

“I suggest public works review the intersection

and co-ordinate with the landowner to trim thetrees, increasing visibility to the east and improvethings or the southbound trafc,” said Councillor Ben Armstrong.

Council approved that the intersection beplaced on the public works winter work scheduleand remediation measures be implemented.

 Job SatiSfaction Survey commiSSioned

County administrators want to know how satis-fed county employees are with their workplace.Chie Administrative Ofcer (CAO) Alan Parkinsuggested an independent survey be commis-sioned that will cost about $2,560.

Parkin told council the survey will help providepolicy direction and strengthen organizationaldecisions. The survey will include an observa-tion component that may identiy areas or im-

provement. Having an independent administra-tion o the survey can identiy things that may  be overlooked by someone immersed in the day to day work schedule, provide impartial resultsand encourage open dialogue by sta members.Parkin said the results would be correlated andpresented to council at a later date. Council askedParkin to contact possible assessment providersand bring back the survey package questions or council approval.

Gleichen water tower completed

County sta reported the historic restoration o the Gleichen water tower was complete, exceptor the removal o a ground level utility build-ing. They hope to have volunteers remove the building and clean up the site in the near uture. There was a 50/50 unding split or the project

with $354,000 received in grants and the county providing $312,000. There is a reserve o $40,000still remaining.

 eaGle lake parkinG

Transportation sta reviewed the issue o park-ing and boat unloading on the Eagle Lake accessroad, stating it was possible or the east-west roadto be widened and a parking lot installed on thenorth side with a south entrance point into thelot. Councillors suggested the lot have a slopedgrade that would acilitate loading and unloadingo boats and enough room to turn around vehi-cles with boat trailers. Sta said the project would be delayed six months while they gained approv-al rom Alberta Environment. The unds or theproject will be included in next year’s budget.

broken vote on mdp conSultation coSt

Council was split our votes to three in avour o award Dillon Consulting an additional $1,500or revising the Municipal Development Plan, a-ter the public hearing and passing o the secondreading. The money will come out o the Plan-ning and Development budget to cover the revi-sions, tracked changes and the legal review.

“We asked them to do the work. It wasn’t in-cluded in the original proposal,” said Councillor Ben Armstrong.

“I eel we are giving them more money to do a bad job. I am not in avour o it,” said Councillor  Alice Booth. “I elt it didn’t cover the necessary issues and I was unsatisfed with the product.”

Councillor Brenda Knight took exception to theassumption there would be no changes between

second and third readings, and elt the consul-tants could have anticipated the reviews andshould have included the possibility in the origi-nal proposal.

Parkin said the appropriate time to present con-cerns would be when the consultant was presentto address them.

“We asked or the changes. It cost us $1,500and that’s just the way it is,” said Reeve GlennKoester.

who he discovered later was 15 years o age.It was “love at frst sight,” because 12

years later she became his wie. They  were married in 1924, and had our children, one o whom was Roger,

born in August 1928 in the originalHoly Cross Hospital in Calgary. Someo you may not know that this hospi-tal, ounded in 1891, was originally run by the Grey Nuns Order, an order greatly respected or its work in what

was basically a rontier town.Roger’s ather became a arm helper

in what is now Carseland, then pur-chased his own quarter section in 1914 whenthe town came into existence, 100 years ago next

Following a job interview in Calgary, Roger  was appointed as a social worker in High Prai-rie, Alta. This started his career with the provin-cial government that lasted eight years, beorehe moved back to Carseland, where he had pur-chased three teacherages as an investment. Hemoved into the one that would have providedlodging or a school principal. Now, he was close

to business interests held by members o hisamily and riends, had work that he enjoyed, and had somewhere to live. How many o my readers remember that i you became a tenantarmer with the CPR, you were given a house torent, but could not install any improvements, asthey became available? For example - when elec-

tricity became available in this part o the coun-try, Roger’s parents were not permitted to installit in their house. Instead, they had to continueusing gas or kerosene lamps or lighting.

Lois Hebbes was born in 1939 in Waldheim,Sask., a very strong Mennonite com-munity, which had frst been settledin 1895 and established as a village in1905. Waldheim means “Home in the

Woods.” There were seven children in

years working at the Calgary General Hospital.

Roger and Lois had two very close riends,Marilyn and Eric Dirks, and Lois was Marilyn’s

bridesmaid when she and Eric married. Throughthis couple, Roger and Lois met, and in turn weremarried on May 27, 1978, at the Bethel BaptistChurch in Calgary. They have no children. Roger and Lois have always been very involved withtheir church activities.

Roger’s community activities include servingas chairman o the Carseland Citizens Council, serving on the Ag Board and on the WheatlandRecreation Board.

Improving to a perect 5-0 on the season, the bantam Spartans ootball team took the Rockyview Rage in Cochrane on Oct. 5, by a score o 72-0. TheSpartans have no more games beore the playos

begin at home. They received a oreit win againstOlds this week, as that team olded.

“I think they’re ready now. They’ve come a long way since the beginning o the season. We’ve hada little bit o ups and downs along the way,” said

bantam coach Doug Klauck.Klauck recognized his team’s deense or their

success, a deense that scored our touchdownsagainst the Rage this weekend. Nose tackle GarrettGatto alone had two umble recoveries that he ran

back or touchdowns.“It’s been our deensive play, it’s been really

strong,” he said. “We’ve had our shutouts this sea-son. The last three games have been really tight

where the deense has kept us in the game. It’s been a dierence, allowing the oense to strugglea little bit but still be able to win.”

Peewees continue winning streak   The Strathmore Spartans peewee team continued

their winning streak, taking the Red Deer Steelersthe same day by a score o 40-12. They’ve only lostonce, against Lacombe, in fve games this season.

“They did awesome,” said peewee coach ChuckHolloway. “We ran and passed well. Everything’sactually coming together pretty good.”

Holloway congratulated running back NathanCayouette and receiver Reid Jensen on their play.

The Red Deer Steelers lacked execution againstStrathmore, which ultimately led to their downall.

“As ar as their running game, we pretty much

dominated them on the oensive line. Our deen-sive line was a lot stronger. They just couldn’t getanything to go,” Holloway said.

The peewee Spartans are currently second inleague standings, and are likely to play SylvanLake or one o Red Deer’s teams in the playo’sfrst round. They travel to Drumheller on Oct. 10or an exhibition matchup, and return to play Oldsat home on Oct. 19.

strathmore high sPartans struggle

The Strathmore High School (SHS) Spartansstruggled in their last home game on Oct. 5.

“I they don’t do their assignments, guess what, stu doesn’t happen,” Spartans coach Carl Seaootsaid ater another disappointing loss or the Spar-tans. The team dropped to Medicine Hat’s CrescentHeights High School 69-0.

“Not that I like the score, but I somewhat ex-pected it, just the way the season’s been going.

These guys have been perennially up there in theleague, so they played pretty good,” Seaoot said.“The execution is still hurting us, it’s not like theguys don’t have the talent.” Three Spartans went down in the game with in-

juries.“We were just trying to get through the game or

most o it. Nothing special, we were short on bod-ies at the start, and we were even shorter at theend,” Seaoot said. The team travelled to Chestermere or an exhi-

bition match on Oct. 8 (result not available as o press time), and another on Oct. 15 in Drumheller.

“Hopeully they’ll bounce back or Tuesday’sgame,” Seaoot said.

Still winless through fve games, the SHS Spar-tans have scored 16 points in total, while allowing296 against.

this time against Crescent Heights High School, 69-0 at

Though the Strathmore Spartan girls had defeated the Highwood Mu-

tangs 1-0 on Sept. 26 (their only win on the season), in the wildcard

playoff match on Oct. 3, they fell 7-3 in a back and forth battle. Strath-

more had placed fourth in the league by the end of the season, andhave high hopes for their Grade 10 players next year.

Fourth place Strathmore High School (SHS) Spartans

battled fth place Highwood High School Mustangs in thegirls soccer playos wild card match on Oct. 3. SHS beatHighwood earlier in the season, but the Mustangs wouldcome out on top 7-3 in the back and orth match. High-

wood now goes on to play the frst place team to continueinto the playos.

“We were playing absolutely the best game I’ve seen usplay in the past two years,” Spartans Coach Kaitrin Mc-Donnell said. “It was potentially the last game o the year.

The girls went out there, they wanted it. Unortunately thescore just didn’t go our way. They were playing their heartsout. I couldn’t ask any more o my team.” Trailing 4-2 to the Mustangs at haltime, the Spartan girls

came back with a fghting second hal with strong posses-sion. SHS could not capitalize or shut down Highwood’sspeed into their own end, so Highwood was ultimately more successul at moving the ball up the feld.

“We do have to work on a couple things heading intonext year, absolutely. They were very ast on their eet. We just have to work on getting back,” McDonnell said.

The match was airly rough – a ew girls on both teamsearned bruises on plays.

“Kind o typical or teenage girls. Soccer is an aggres-sive sport. I don’t think people realize how aggressive andphysical it is,” McDonnell said. The team had its frst victory in three years (ironically,

against Highwood on Sept. 26), and have made drastic im-provements in their team play.

“I’ve only been coaching or two seasons, but I am very proud and happy to be coaching these girls or this season.I can’t wait or the next two years, because a lot o my girlsare in Grade 10,” McDonnell said.” It’s going to be awe-some. Next year is going to be 10 times better, especially

because we’re going to be conditioning more.”

Ater a lacklustre eort on the penalty kill against the Sher- wood Park Kings on Oct. 5 – which resulted in a 6-3 loss –the UFA Bisons picked it up deensively the next day againstthe Maple Leas Athletic Club (MLAC) United Cycle MapleLeas, winning 3-2.

In the second period against the Kings, Shane Fraser wasserved a game misconduct or a check rom behind. In thatmajor penalty alone, Sherwood Park scored three power play goals.

“We had a good game going until that happened. They justtook o ater that,” Bisons coach Dan MacDonald said. “Sher- wood Park was very good on the power play, and that’s why they beat us. We have to get better in that department, that’s just the way it is. This season we really haven’t worked on it very much, but we’ll spend some time on it now.”

Strathmore’s own power play was working as well, withall three o their goals against the Kings coming on the manadvantage.

“Special teams is something that’s down the line. Wehaven’t got there yet. But we’ve got some smart players inthose situations. They’re good at it too,” MacDonald said.“Sometimes it changes the momentum, and at this age levelmomentum is a big thing.”

On Oct. 6, the Bisons were tied 1-1 ater the frst period with the Maple Leas. The Leas scored three minutes into

the second, but the Bisons responded 17 seconds later, andonce more near the end o the second on the power play. The Maple Leas couldn’t capitalize in the third.

“The biggest thing is that we played better deensively all

the way around. That was one area we were having difculty  with (against Sherwood Park),” MacDonald said.

Having won the frst two games o the season, MacDonaldthought his team came out thinking they were going to winthem all. Sherwood Park was the head-shaker they needed.

“You need to lose to get better. That was a bit o a wake-up call so that we could reinorce the idea that deense isimportant, and we got to keep playing,” he said. Ater our games, orward Mackenzie Bauer is tied or the

league lead in scoring with seven points. Goalie Carter Semi-nuk is also tied or second, but in save percentage with .898.Seminuk has a 2.50 GAA.

“We got a good perormance rom a lot o guys,” MacDon-ald said, also positively noting on Mason McCarty, Tristan Thompson and Matthew Forchuk. “Our veterans are doing agood job o scoring goals and doing things that they shoulddo, because they have some experience.”

Rookies, however, are impressing MacDonald too.“Clay Murray has played two good games or us. He’s get-

ting better, and I think he’s going to break out and be a goodgoal scorer too. He’s just doing better things all the time,”MacDonald said. “He’s not getting rewarded as much as heshould or his eorts, but he will.”

The junior varsity Strathmore HighSchool (SHS) Spartan boys conqueredHighwood High School’s Mustangs 3-1 athome on the volleyball court, by a scoreo 25-14, 25-17, 24-26 and 25-12 on Oct.2. The team sits 3-0 on the season now, having previously deeated Black Dia-mond and Strathcona Tweedsmuir.

“As the game went on, we started tolet up a bit, and we got a little overcon-fdent; it came back to bite us. But theguys did a good job o reocusing andgetting back to what they did well,”Spartans coach Cole Hintz said. “They

worked really well at hustling and hav-ing each other’s back. There was a lot o

really good plays where guys were run-ning, chasing down balls outside o thecourt and bringing them back. They dida great job.”

Highwood has recently restarted their  volleyball program or the second timein 10 years. The school has had troublepicking up sets, but wanted to attemptleague play again with their skilled play-ers coming up to reasonable size.

“They’re kind o starting rom scratch,”Hintz said.

SHS’s next game is Oct. 16 at homeagainst Foothills Composite High School– this brings a small rest or the JV teamover Thanksgiving.

“I think this break comes at a greattime or us, where we’ve had a little bito experience playing,” Hintz said. “Now

we can spend some time on skill devel-opment and improving individual skills– not having to ocus so much on theteam aspect.”

Playos begin at the end o the Octo- ber; Strathmore eels they can fnish air-ly high in the standings. Last weekend, atan exhibition tournament in Brooks, JV players gained valuable experience play-ing at a tougher varsity level.

“It would be great i we won all o our games,” Hintz said. The JV league,it’s kind o all over; there are teams thatare all junior high kids, there are teams

 where it’s a mix o Grade 10’s and 9’s. Wehave a couple o Grade 11’s on our team

which as been really good or us physi-cally. We have a strong team comparedto some others that we’re going to see.”

Lecavalier named to top 27 AryssAh stAnkevitsch

Times Reporter

Strathmore’s Sarah Lecavalier made itthrough another round o cuts towardher goal o making the U18 Alberta

women’s hockey team, ater a tourna-ment Sept. 27-29. The team went rom 46 to 27, with

Lecavalier - one o two 15-year-olds -making the trim. At the tournament, U18 Alberta played

the University o Alberta (U o A) squadon Saturday and Sunday, and a bantam

AAA team rom Edmonton on Friday.“The rst game we were kind o just

getting our legs under us. We hadn’tseen each other in a couple months. So,

we were kind o iy,” Lecavalier said.

“Obviously they’re older and smarter. But I thought it was a good pace, andI was up there with everyone else. So I

was pretty happy.”Lecavalier thought the U18’s played

well and had a decent amount o shots, though they lost both games to U o A.Lines were changed airly requently among the girls.

“Normally I’m a centre, but I was puton right wing just because there aremore centres than right wings and I’m

younger,” Lecavalier said. “So I said ‘justput me on the right’.”

Next up is the National Women’sU18 Championship, where Lecavalier and Team Alberta will play teams romacross the country. Ater that week o games rom Nov. 6-10 at WinSport inCalgary, the team will make their nalcut o 20.

In terms o what she needs to work

on prior to those games, Lecavalier said, “Just handling the puck along the

boards, getting used to who I’m play-ing with. It’s a huge learning experienceand I’m just glad that I’m there.”

Lecavalier eels completely healthy a-ter battling a ew injuries earlier in the

year. Along with joining U18 Alberta,

Lecavalier plays or the Highwood Raid-ers o the Alberta Major Midget FemaleHockey League, beside U18 teammateHannah Olenyk.

“That’s the major ocus right now be-cause I made my commitment prior toU18 with them. So I’ll go to practicetwice a week and then usually (play)two games every weekend. But our schedules are kind o conficting now,”

Lecavalier said. For instance, this upcoming weekend,

Lecavalier and Olenyk will be missingRaiders games in Grand Prairie.

“We’re staying in Calgary to play, so we can’t be with the team. It’s kind o disappointing but it’s a sacrice youkind o have to make,” Lecavalier said. The most challenging opponent Team

Alberta will have is Ontario, which hastwo teams participating in the tourna-ment.

“Every year, basically, it’s Ontario,”Lecavalier said. “We always watch vid-eos on the previous teams and how they played power play, and penalty kill, andhow we can be eective against them.”

Lecavalier is looking orward to a

possible invitation to join next year’sU18 or Team Canada. However, at 15

years o age, she has more than enoughseasons to potentially join the team.

The Wheatland Chies opened their midget season this weekend on theroad, with two victories in Taber and

Cranbrook, respectively. On Oct. 5, theChies beat the Taber Golden Suns 4-2,and the Cranbrook Ice 6-4 the ollowingday. Coltyn Herman had a hat trick andtwo assists against Cranbrook, while

Taylor Donner scored in both games.“He played good,” Chies coach Devin

Olson said o Donner. “He had a coupleon the second day that he could havecapitalized on, but he kind o got away

with a couple o tap-in goals. He kept working hard, and he ended up gettinga ew points. That line was really good.”

Donner and line mates Coltyn Her-man and Jayse Wilson were the stron-gest against Cranbrook, combining or

nine points. Other goal scorers over the weekend included Blair Roszell, Cody Lassiter, Jayden Smith and Quinton Pep-linski.

“I thought it was a good weekend, es-pecially or the rst two games,” Olson

said. The team travelled over two hoursrom Strathmore to Taber on Saturday, and then another our and a hal toCranbrook ater their game. The boyseventually arrived in Cranbrook at 3a.m., and had a game to play at noonthat day.

“We weren’t too bad, but we only hadtwo practices as a ull team,” Olson said,

who wanted to spend more time on spe-cial teams. “There’s just that kind o littlestu. Then just some o the positionalplaying in our deensive end that needssome work. With our deense, the bigthing is clearing guys in ront o our

goalies so they can see the shot.” With two goalies o very dierent sizes

(Ben Bogstie at 6’5, and Mike Conrad at5’8), Olson said that especially with thelatter, his players really need to makethe puck visible.

Another undeeated AA team is the bantam Wheatland Warriors, who sit 5-0on the season with 10 points. They havethe most goals or in the league with 40;the next team, the Bow Valley Timber-

wolves, have 26. They deeated the Syl- van Lake Lakers 7-1 on Oct. 5.

Joel Krahenbil leads the team withseven goals in ve games, and had a vepoint perormance against Sylvan Lake.Rylan Longmuir contributed two goals, and Brady Skington had a three point

night as well. Kyle Merkosky added an-other goal in the Sylvan Lake victory. The peewee Wheatland Braves lost 5-1

against the Cranbrook Eagles on Oct. 4, with only 13 shots on net. Braves’ goal-ie Kenny Holt-Stewart saved 37 o 42

shots, while Hassan Akl had the team’slone goal in the loss. The next day, the AA Braves tied the

Taber Golden Suns 5-5, with Tarun Fizer scoring the game-tying goal with veminutes let in the third. Fizer also hada power play marker earlier in the night;he leads the team in points and goals.Hassan Akl, Kyle Crnkovic, and KaydenGatz popped in the other markers. The

Wheatland Braves are 1-3-1 on the sea-son.

Hawks gettheir 1stseason win AryssAh stAnkevitsch

Times Reporter

Previously losing to Strathcona

Tweedsmuir and Holy Trinity Academy 3-0, the Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC)Hawks girls varsity volleyball team f-nally notched a win, by deeating High-

wood High School on Sept. 30 with ascore o 3-0 in three straight sets.

“The frst two teams we played arestrong teams and we weren’t as pre-pared or them as we were or High-

wood,” said Hawks coach Darren Periz-zolo. “That’s not to say that Highwoodis a much weaker team, but they were alittle less o a quality caliber opponent.”

Now with one win and two losses, thesenior girls are fnding their groove as ateam moving into the season.

“I think the girls supported each other

quite a bit more during the Highwoodgame,” Perizzolo said. The Hawks played again Oct. 2 against

Oilfelds High School, a team with thesame record as Holy Cross, and knownas a good, deensive, scrappy team.

“Their intensity is usually pretty high, and they’re really good at just gettingthe ball back over the net,” Perizzolosaid. “Depending on what they looklike, we’ll change our game plan, andsee where their weaknesses are and try to exploit that.”

Perizzolo admits that his team couldimprove on their passing to get their system working during games, but it isonly three matches in.

“When we’re in system we’re very

technical and very tactical in terms o  what we run and when we run stu,” hesaid. “Once we get our pass to our set-ter, then we can run our oense. I thinkour oense is probably one o the bestin the league, i we can run it.”

Individually, Perizzolo said he hadn’tseen any one player stand out yet.

“Our setters are doing a really good job o getting the ball to where it needsto go, especially when it isn’t a greatpass,” he said. “They’ve been workingreally hard.”

Over 60 eager little hockey players were on the

ice this weekend to show their stuff. The Timbits

skated on Sept. 21 and 22 and will be placed onfour different teams for the upcoming season.
