The Life of Clare Edna Isobel BlandMarch 16th 1927 - July 23rd 2014

Clare was born in Chiswick on 16th March1927. She grew up and although educated inEngland; She was a trueScot - albeit with anEnglish accent - whichfooled many. Her fatherJames Paterson, aGlaswegian was a chiefengineer in theMerchant Navy and herGrandparents were millowners in the ScottishBorders, at Hawick. Hermother Inez Alice, bornin 1896, as 1 of 3sisters. Married in Turhnam Green Church,Chiswick.

Being a Paterson shebelonged to the Septof Clan MacLarenand wore theMacLaren Kilt. Shewas keen onScotland's Nationalpoet, Rabbie Burns, the Haggis and theGlenmorangiewhisky, an essentialpart of Scotland'snational heritage. Inlater years Glayvawas thoroughly enjoyed.

During the Second World War, she was evacuated tothe West Country, but soon called back to Londonby her mother. There she survived the LondonBlitz, largely by using the London Underground. Many of the houses where she lived weredemolished in the bombing.

Education was at 14 different schools, which wasnot a success and she left the last one at the age of14, to take up shorthand and typing. During thewar years she worked for a company which builtsmall boats, which were employed at Dunkirk. After the war she worked in the City and becamesecretary to the Managing Director of Debenhams. In later years Clare became a Medical Secretary, firstly in Ayr and finally at Stansted Mountfitchet, when the family moved South.

Staying with one of her London work-mates"Paddy" near Cambridge, in the late 1940's,she met Brian Bland at a Tea Dance, at the"Dorothy" in Cambridge.

They were married in 1952, Brian's last year as astudent at Magdalene College. The ReverendShaw-Kew, her uncle, conducted the service atChrist Church in Turnham Green, Chiswick on 5th

July 1952.

A short period at Cambridge, was followed by amove to Sprowston (near Norwich) and there firstBarbara and then Christopher were born. The nextmove was to Tadcaster in Yorkshire where No 3Brian Malcolm was born. With Brian M's chestproblems the family were advised to move to a fogfree area and so moved off to the West of Scotlandto Ayr.Clare worked hard as a Medical Secretary duringthe day and as a Ground Hostess at night atPrestwick Airport, supporting Barbara's educationat Wellington High School for Girls. Friends forlife were established during that time - and lovingties still remain to this day.

Having had 10 happy years north of the Border, thefamily moved back to England to Hatfield Heath in1970. Clare's cousin and family, aunt and unclelived less than 100 yards from this church.

Although working at the Stansted Surgery, she hadmore time to be involved in many things in thisvillage. A keen supporter of Hatfield Heath

Festival, she was involved in a number of "stalls"in these early days.

We needed a church Hall and a large effort wasrequired to raise the money for this enterprisewhich she fully supported. She was a foundermember in establishing the bowls club in 1990 andcontinued to play for many years.

To help with the running of Hatfield Heath UnitedReform Church she became one of it's Elders, a jobshe took on with enthusiasm and savoir-faire. Alsoan active member of the Royal British Legion -Womens' Branch. Clare very much appreciatedhaving a large united family and many goodfriends, who supported her to the end.

July 5th 2014 was her 62nd Wedding Anniversarywhich was celebrated at home with Barbara andBrian (alias Manuel, a character from "FawltyTowers") in charge.

Last year amongst other things wesuccessfully raised enough money to replace ourdraughty, old front door with a new UPVC doubleglazed door. We would like to sincerely thank Coun-cillor Mark Lemon for his help in obtaining the nec-essary funding from UDC for this. We would alsolike to thank all the villagers who supported usthroughout the year – whether donating clothes toour clothing collections, purchasing ChristmasGrand Draw tickets, attending our Easter Fun Day orsupporting our cake stall at Hatfest.

This year we will be focusing on raising enoughmoney to replace the remaining wooden doubledoors at the front of our building.

PROPOSED WORK INHOLY TRINITY CHURCHYARD

Later this autumn, if weather permits, we hope tocarry out some work in part of the churchyard onsome of the un-tended graves. The intention is to fillin the hollows on those graves that have sunk, andgrade off the "humps" on others. If time allows wewill then re-seed with new grass straight away, alternatively that may have to wait until the spring. We will of course take the utmost care not to disturbany headstones, grave surrounds, or specially plantedgraves.Thank you in advance for your understanding whilstthis work is being carried out.Holy Trinity PCC

NIMBYS US? SURELY NOTI am pleased to report that NIMBYism* is aliveand thriving in Hatfield Heath.Evidence of this delightful trait is to be foundeverywhere, including the children’s playgroundwhere someone has thoughtfully left buildersrubble and assorted garden waste and theentrance to Taylors Field which has once againbeen enhanced by black plastic bags and grasscuttings, well that will teach us to wax lyricalabout it being a “rich area for wildlife”!

And, of course, as NIMBYs the depositors’ ofthis miscellaneous detritus would be the first tocomplain if Taylors Field was going to bedeveloped because it might be unsightly ormight affect their property values, we mustn’tblame them they couldn’t help it it’s in theirnature.

So let’s be radical and stop the Garden WasteSkip collection, disband the litter pickers, dismiss the tree warden, dispense withNeighbourhood Watch, forget altruism, let us allbe purely self-interested and just look afterourselves and our own backyards.I’m sure village life will only get better if we do.

*NIMBYism shorthand for Not In My Back YardsyndromeSusanne

After a hard days work it's nice to sit and relax inthe garden (Clipped Hedge). However it has longbeen hindered by a number of dogs living in TheShaw with their incessant barking and howling toeachother back and forth.Being a dog owner for most of my life I knowwhat a noise they can make and make sure it iskept to a minimum so not to disrupt others. However there seems to be some residents whodon't share the same views. Primarily at the frontof The Shaw and towards the back possibly verg-ing into West Hayes, there is regular exchangesbetween 3/4 dogs.Could the owners please make an effort to stopthis continuing, if your dog is prone to barkingalot and you're going out don't leave them out-side, take them on a long walk beforehand.Regards Joe.

Last week saw the first classes of the Hatfield Heathbranch of Sawbridgeworth-based children’s performingarts school, Diverse Performing Arts.

Diverse opened in Sawbridgeworth in October 2011,teaching students aged from 3 to 18 and with its weeklyclasses in singing, dancing and acting proving a hit, principal Ria Whitton (a Sawbridgeworth resident) hasnow opened a second weekly school at the HatfieldHeath Institute.

These new classes take place each Tuesday afternoonfrom 4pm, with the stage 1 class for children inReception, year 1 and year 2 of primary school runningfrom 4-5pm, followed by the stage 2 class for children inschool years 3 to 6 from 5-6.30pm.

Each class is taught by experienced teachers who are alsoprofessional singers and actors who are still active in theprofession.

Ria explained more, saying “As the emphasis at Diverseis upon performing, our classes combine the three mainelements of performing arts, namely singing, dancingand acting, in one class and the children learn not onlytechnique but also how to perform the skills they arelearning.

We believe that this helps to make the classes moreexciting for the children and the regular shows and otherpublic performances which Diverse is asked to providegets them used to performing in front of an audiencefrom a young age. Our Sawbridgeworth pupils alsoperformed in the West End in February and this is anopportunity that we will extend to pupils in HatfieldHeath in the future.”

She continued “There arealso the opportunities toattend the private dance, singing and LAMDA dramaclasses which Diverse runsalongside its Sawbridgeworthclasses”.

Classes can be paid for on aweekly basis and cost £5.50for Stage 1 pupils and £8 forStage 2 pupils. Any pupilwho quotes this article willreceive their first class free.

More information on Diversecan be found atwww.diverseperformingarts.co.uk or by calling Ria on07785 562 529.

The Parish Council are optimistic about the prospectof the village having Superfast Broadband by the endof 2015. This follows an informative meeting withthe Superfast Essex Senior Programme Manager andthe BT Relationship Manager for the East ofEngland. The street cabinet by Pond Lane, which serves thewestern half of the village, is in the currentprogramme for Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) to bedeployed in 2016; however the programme isrunning ahead of schedule and this cabinet may beconnected in late 2015. The street cabinet outside thepolice station, which serves the eastern half of thevillage, is not in the current programme but there isreasonable confidence that it will be included in theextension to the programme resulting from freshinvestment by the Government, Essex CountyCouncil and BT.Superfast Broadband means up to 24Mbit/s (many ofus are getting less than 2Mbit/s at present), what anindividual dwelling will get depends on severalfactors the prime one being distance from the streetcabinet. Generally we may expect a 4Ximprovement.To improve the chances of getting the second cabinetconnected you need to complete theSuperfast Essex survey atwww.superfastessex.org (click on the”Getinvolved” button and the “Complete survey” button).Don’t worry if you think you may have already doneit, the Superfast Essex team can filter outduplications, so do it again.

Slow speed now?If you suffering from slow speed now, go tohttps://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html to check what speed you should expect. If you aregetting significantly lower, complain to your InternetService Provider.(To check what speed you are getting you canconduct a speed test using the tool atwww.thinkbroadband.com ). Note that the wiring

and WiFi connections in your house can also affectthe speed at your computer or TV.

Why would I want Superfast Broadband?More and more services are coming on line thatneed higher speed downloads, currently if you wantto use video on demand or catch-up TV it’s difficultif you have slow speed. You might think you don’tneed it now, but you will almost certainly want it inthe future!

As many of you know, I amincredibly proud to captainthis great cricket club in thisgreat village. However, Ihave never been more proudthan this year! 2014 hasbeen a huge success for us,becoming champions ofDivision 2 of the Herts andEssex League and reachingthe semi final of the LeagueCup. We will move up to the top division nextyear, having only joined theleague (in division 6) in 2007. Itreally is a brilliant achievement. We've benefited hugely by twoMarks this year, who joined us atthe beginning of the season.Mark Taylor and Mark Welbyhave made fantasticcontributions, with ball andbat/wicketkeeping respectively. These two, along with me(another Mark) are experienced, qualified coaches and we will becoaching children next year.Outstanding batting this year hascome from overseas superstarRaji George (4 centuries and 4 fifties), tokenginger Chris Wearden (2 centuries and 3 fifties)and Mark 'fingers' Welby (1 century and 2 fifties). Our bowling attack was the mostfeared in the division. MarkTaylor, Saji George, MichaelCollins, Raji George, JamesBilling and Oscar 'snooze' Nisbetall outstanding. The team spirit and camaraderiehas been excellent, as well as themuch appreciated support fromour many fans! It's a shame theseason is coming to an end, witha long winter ahead of us!Thanks to Teresa Mascall for thebest teas in the league - melons ripened toperfection. Also to my dad Peter Graves for hismany hours preparing the pitch.See you in 2015!

ISSUED BY STOP STANSTED EXPANSION15 September 2014

NEW FLIGHT PATH PROPOSAL DOES NOTGIVE LOCAL RESIDENTS A FAIR

BALANCE OF BENEFITSStop Stansted Expansion (‘SSE’) urged cautionwhen NATS first proposed major operationalchanges to Stansted flight paths in June. We saidthere must be clear and compelling benefits forlocal residents before any changes wereimplemented. It has now become clear that therewould not be any net benefit for local residents interms of reducing the overall noise impact ofaircraft departing from Stansted. If this proposed change to flight paths were to beimplemented, daytime flights from the existingsouth-east (Dover) departure routes would switch tothe existing east (Clacton) departure routes. Thiswould double the number of daytime flights on theClacton route and quadruple the number if Stanstedwere to expand to its maximum permitted capacity.More people would be overflown more intensivelyon the Clacton route (2,400) compared to those whowould benefit from reduced flights on the Doverroute (1,470). And people living under the Doverroute would not benefit from any reduction ofoverflying at night. The NATS proposal would also intensify air trafficin the proximity of Hatfield Forest, a Site of SpecialScientific Interest (SSSI) and the UK’s bestremaining example of a medieval royal huntingforest. Hatfield Forest currently has over 400,000visitors a year.Significant changes to Stansted’s airspace are likelyto come in the next airspace review phasescheduled for 2018/19. Additionally theGovernment is expected to decide next year on afurther runway in the South East. Thesedevelopments are anticipated to involve asignificant redesign of Stansted routes for which noinformation has been made available and thispresent proposal cannot be assessed in the contextof this subsequent significant redesign. The Government says that noise is the primaryconcern for local communities near airports andthat the benefits of noise reduction should be sharedbetween the aviation industry and localcommunities. There are always winners and losers

when flight paths are changed but this particularproposal would overall have an adverse noiseimpact upon the local community living within 20miles of the airport.SSE Chairman Peter Sanders commented: “SSE isnot convinced that this NATS proposal strikes a fairbalance of noise reduction benefits for localcommunities near Stansted. We have thereforerecommended that the proposed changes should – atthe very least – be postponed until they can beassessed in the context of the much more significantairspace redesign planned for 2018/19.”

PRELIMINARY RESPONSE TO STANSTEDAIRPORT’S NEW LONG TERM PLAN

Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) welcomes thepublication last week of Stansted Airport’s new longterm plan, which it describes as its ‘SustainableDevelopment Plan’ (SDP) for Stansted. Importantlythe plan is based on Stansted remaining as a singlerunway airport. The SDP has been published as a draft forconsultation and we believe there is considerablescope for constructive dialogue with the airport.SSE will be submitting a detailed response in duecourse. In the meantime SSE re-iterates the pointsmade in its press release of 28 July – anticipatingthe new plan – seehttp://stopstanstedexpansion.com/press478.html, inparticular:

· It will be a great relief for the vast majorityof local residents that Stansted’s new longterm plan is based on Stansted remaining asa single runway airport but this still leavesscope – within Stansted’s existing planningpermission – for the airport to handle twiceas many passengers and twice as manyflights as it does today.

· Stansted’s current planning permission isfor 35 million passengers per annum (mppa).Since this is only about 50% utilised atpresent, it would be premature to startconsidering anything above 35mppa on theexisting runway.

· SSE would like to see a gradual phasing outof night flights at Stansted and this issue willbe high on our agenda in the consultation onthe SDP.

· Stansted Airport continues to own about270 properties around the airport – acquiredin connection with the now-aborted secondrunway plans. We would like to see thesereturned to private ownership.

PRISONERS OF WAR LOADING HAY

While searching online I came across this colourphoto of POW’S and the story below....Prisoner of War Camp 116 was set up in 1941 tohouse Italian prisoners of war, and from 1943-1944it mainly held German and Austrian prisoners. The POW's were allowed out to work on the nearbyfarms and one local has this memory of it......"The Austrian and German prisoners of war werekept in a camp at Hatfield Heath and sent out daily to'help on the land'.Our first batch were Austrian and they were hardworkers and Mum was so sorry for them she lookedat their ration for the day and promptly invited themto share our food - they even ate with us.The next lot were German and all but one of thosewere also polite, hard workers and they too sharedour food and ate in the kitchen with us.My biggest impression was the way they stoodwhenever Mum got up and would never sit until shetoo sat down”

(Mill Lane Camp, Hatfield Heath) conforms to theso-called ‘Standard’ layout, with the guards’compound consisting of MoWP huts, while theliving huts are all timber Laing huts.
