To truly know what the word “HALLOWEEN” means - indicates to us clearly its true meaning. It is something of the responsibility of Catholics in English-speaking countries to restore Halloween to its truly Christian significance. It comes to us from English as spoken in the Middle Ages: 'HALOWEN' or 'HALWEN' which means literally: to make holy, to sanctify; and as well: to reverence, to honor as sacred, to venerate. The very root of the word reminds us that Halloween is the 'holy-evening'; it is the eve (the vigil) of the feast of All Saints - 'All-Hallows' (celebrated November 1st). The Feast of All Saints and the corresponding, and was a Vigil of All Saints, the thirty first of October before the first of November. Thus, it is a day of preparation for the glorious feast on which we honor and vener-ate all the men, the women, and the children who through the merits of the Holy Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ have attained to the eternal bliss of paradise in heaven. The souls that have made it to heaven and the Feast of All Saints, as the Church has been teaching over the centuries, is not just of Canonized Saints (those proclaimed by the Church) but of all those who’ve reached Heaven the un-Canonized Saints (those known only to God). November 2nd, we remember the “Poor Souls” - for those who are still suffering in Purgatory and those on Earth who are still awaiting our full entry into Heaven. At the end of the third century and the beginning of the fourth the most vicious of all persecutions occurred, that of the emperor Diocletian (284-305). The number of martyr saints be-came so many that in some places it was impossible to commemorate even the most significant of them. The need for a common feast of all martyr saints was becoming evident. This common feast of All Martyrs became a reality as early as the middle of the fourth century – 350 AD. Since Pope Boniface IV in 609 AD, the Catholic Church has had an annual celebration in honor of all the Holy Martyrs of the Church. In 732 Pope Gregory III assigned the date November 1 for an annual celebration as a “Feast in Honor of All Saints” when he consecrated the “All Saints Chapel” in St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Gregory IV extended the observance of the “Feast of All Saints” to all of the Catholic Church around 835. The common day meaning of “Halloween” symbolizes what has happened in once Catholic countries thanks, in large measure, to the rise of anti-Catholic Protestantism in the six-teenth century. The birthday of Protestantism is October 31st, 1517. On that day Martin Luther nailed his ninety-five theses (protests against the Church - as he called them) to the door of the castle of Wittenberg, Germany. Among these theses, Luther denied the Church’s right to give absolution from sins in the Name of Christ. Not coincidentally, the followers of Martin Luther not only dropped the Feast of All Saints; they denied it from the very beginning, they denied the veneration of saints and called it superstition. It is Protestant heresy to honor the saints. Logically then, the Vigil of All Saints became a day of mockery, a mockery of the veneration of Saints, or invoking their interces-sion in Heaven with God. It is a principle of both Martin Luther and Protestantism that there are no saints in Heaven. Three years

later Luther was condemned by Pope Leo X as a heretic. And before Luther’s death in 1546, something like one-third of Europe was lost to the Catholic Church. And it all began on Halloween, October 31st, 1517. Therefore, since the middle of the sixteenth century the Vigil of the Solemn Feast of All Saints (All Hallows Eve) has now became a day of fun and prankish trickery. In protest and mockery against the Catholic Church and its teachings, the once solemn Vigil of All Saints, became a time of wonton revelry and pagan superstitions celebrated against the Veneration of the Saints of the Catholic Church. Halloween has now become so built into our national culture that it is simply taken for granted. Almost nobody knows or seems to care about this return of a pagan custom into what was once a Christian nation. Our responsibility is to do whatever we can to restore Halloween. Restore Halloween to its Catholic place in the Church’s calendar. How? Know the Saints. It is our Catholic responsibility: Know the Saints who we do believe in and to promote the writings of the Saints. We need the Saints! This is one of the two reasons why the Church canonizes Saints: One is to assure us that, one like us – baptized and following Jesus’ teachings, has and is a canonized saint and is infallibly in Heaven and, secondly, that we might, read, learn on how the saints thought, how they lived and imitate their virtues. We need the Saints. Know them. Promote them. Publicize their lives. Make the Saints known, invoked and imitat-ed by others. Use the occasion of Halloween (the Vigil of All the Saints) to restore the “Feast of All Saints” and the devotion to the Saints (the canonized – proclaimed and the un-canonized – known only to God) to their place in our lives and in our Catholic Church. To restore the true understanding of Halloween, I would suggest that we remember that we are celebrating the lives of the Saints – the followers of Jesus. Avoid any and all suggestions to evil, to the devil, to monsters, and the “end of the world”. Avoid any costumes or celebrations that glorify death, violence, mayhem, and destruction. Avoid zombies, the “undead”, vampires, werewolves, and other horror movie monsters and animals. Avoid inflicting harm and pain – through “pranks and tricks” on Halloween. To restore a more Catholic understanding of Halloween, remember the honorable celebration of “El Dia de los Muertos”. “The Day of the Dead” in the Hispanic culture is a day of remembrance of those who have gone before us in faith and are awaiting the Day of Resurrection. It is the day to visit the cemetery and shared our memories of those family members who have died. Remember also those other brother and sisters of our Catholic Faith that have died and are proclaimed as already enjoying the glories of heaven – the Saints! Remember that “indeed for God’s faithful people – God’s people of Faith, life is changed not ended, and when this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal dwelling place is made ready for them in heaven”. Death is not the end but the beginning of the “promised immortality to come”! To truly celebrate Halloween – Celebrate the Saints! All the Saints!

Para conocer verdaderamente lo que la palabra "Halloween" significa - nos indica claramente su verdadero signifi-cado. Es algo de la responsabilidad de los católicos en países de habla inglesa restaurar Halloween a su significado verdaderamente cristiano. Viene de Inglés como fine hablado en la Edad Media: 'halowen' o 'HALWEN ", que significa literalmente: hacer santo, para santificar; y así: a la reverencia, en honor a tan sagrado, para venerar. La raíz de la palabra nos recuerda que Halloween es el 'santo-noche'; es la víspera (la vigilia) de la fiesta de Todos los San-tos - 'Todos los Santos' (que se celebra 1 de noviembre). El día de Todos los Santos y la correspondiente, y fue una Vigilia de Todos los Santos, el treinta y uno de octubre, antes de la primera de noviembre. Por lo tanto, se trata de un día de la preparación para la fiesta gloriosa en la que honramos y veneramos a todos los hom-bres, las mujeres y los niños que por los méritos de la Santa Cruz de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo han alcanzado la dicha eterna del paraíso en cielo. Las almas que han llegado al cielo y la Fiesta de Todos los Santos, como la Iglesia ha estado enseñando a lo largo de los siglos, no es sólo de los Santos canonizados (los proclamados por la Igle-sia) sino de todos aquellos que han llegado al cielo de la Santos No canonizados (aquellos que sólo Dios conoce). 2 de noviembre, se recuerda a las "pobres almas" - para aquellos que todavía están sufriendo en el Purgatorio y las de la Tierra que aún están a la es-pera de nuestra plena entrada en el cielo. A finales del siglo III y el comienzo de la cuarta, el más vicioso de todas las persecuciones ocurrio, la del emperador Diocleciano (284-305). El número de santos mártires llegó a ser tantos que en algunos lugares era imposible conmemorar incluso el más significa-tivo de ellos. La necesidad de una fiesta común de todos los Santos Mártires se hacía evidente. Esta fiesta común de todos los mártires se convirtió en una realidad tan pronto como a mediados del siglo IV - 350 AD. Dado que el Papa Bonifacio IV en el año 609 AD, la Iglesia Católica ha tenido una celebración anual en honor de todos los Santos Mártires de la Iglesia. En el año 732 el Papa Gregorio III le asigna la fecha de 1 de noviembre para una celebración anual como una "fiesta en honor de Todos los Santos" cuando se consagró la "Capilla de Todos los Santos" en la basílica de San Ped-ro. El Papa Gregorio IV extendió la celebración de la "Fiesta de Todos los Santos" a toda la Católica Iglesia en torno a 835. Es herejía protestante honor a los santos. Lógicamen-te, la Vigilia de Todos los Santos se convirtió en un día de burla, unan burla de la veneración de los Santos, o invocar su intercesión en el cielo con Dios. Es un principio fundamental de ambos Martín Luther y Juan Calvino y el protestantismo que no hay santos en el

Cielo. Tres años más tarde, Luther fue condenado por el Papa León X como hereje: Y antes de la muerte de Lutero en 1546, algo así como un tercio de Europa se perdió a la Iglesia Católica. Es nuestra responsabilidad católica: Conocer los Santos a quien nosotros creemos y promover la doctrina de los Santos. Necesitamos los Santos! Esta es una de las dos razones por las cuales la Iglesia canoniza Santos: Uno es para asegurarnos de que, uno como nosotros - bautizados y siguiendo las enseñanzas de Jesús, tiene y es un santo canonizado y es infalible en el cielo y, en segundo lugar, para que evedamos, leer, aprender sobre cómo pen-saban los santos, cómo vivían y imita ciertamente sus virtudes. Necesitamos los Santos. Conocerlos, promover los vidas dar a conocen sus. Hacer los Santos conocidos invocados e imitados e imitados por los demás. Aprovechar la ocasión de Halloween (la Vigilia de Todos los Santos) para restaurar la "Fiesta de Todos los Santos" y la devoción a los santos (los canonizados - proclamado y la desclasificación canonizado - conocido sólo por Dios) a su lugar en nuestras vidas y en nuestra Iglesia Católica. Para restaurar la verdadera comprensión de Halloween, yo sugeriría que recordemos que estamos celebrando la vida de los santos - los seguidores de Jesús. Evitar cualquier y todas las sugerencias al mal, al diablo, a los monstruos, y el "fin del mundo". Evitar cualquier trajes o celebra-ciones que glorifican la muerte, la violencia, el caos y la destrucción. Evitar zombies, el "los no-muertos", vampiros, disfrazes hombres lobo y de monstruos de la película de terror y animales. Evitar in-fligir daño y el dolor - a través de "bromas y trucos" en Halloween. Para restaurar una comprensión más católica de Halloween, recordar al honorable celebración de "El Día de los Muertos". "El día de los muertos" en la cultura hispana es un día para recuerdan los que han precedido en la fe y están a la espera del día de la Resurrección. Es el día para visitar el cementerio y compartido nuestros recuerdos de aquellos miembros de la familia que han muerto. Recuerda también a los otros hermanos y hermanas de nuestra Fe Católica que han muerto y se proclaman disfrutar de las glorias del cielo - los Santos! Recuerde que "de hecho, para los fieles de Dios - Las personas de fe de Dios, la vida se cambia no ha termi-nado, y cuando este cuerpo terrenal se convierte en polvo, una mo-rada eterna se prepara para ellos en el cielo". La muerte no es el fin sino el comienzo de la "inmortalidad prometida y venidera"! Para celebrar verdaderamente Halloween - ¡Celebre los Santos! ¡Todos los Santos!

Adult Confirmation The Adult Confirmation Mass will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 10:30am at the Corpus Christi Cathedral. In addition to the sacramental catechesis provided by the parish, each candidate should attend a one-day retreat. The Diocesan Retreat will be held on November 11, 2017 from 8am-12pm at Our Lady of Corpus Christi Chapel 1200 Lantana, Corpus Christi, TX.

Candidates for Adult Confirmation: Candidates who are 18 years old (cannot be in High School) and older. Candidates cannot be in a cohabitating relationship or irregular marriage. Confirmation must be delayed until this situation is rectified.

Guidelines for Sponsors: The sponsor is to be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church, at least sixteen years of age and have received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Individuals who are in irregular marriages, in a cohabitating relationship, or not practicing Catholics cannot be sponsors. Parents cannot be sponsors. Confirmación para Adultos La Misa de Confirmación para Adultos se llevará a cabo el sábado 9 de diciembre de 2016 a las 10:30 a.m. en la Catedral de Corpus Christi. Además de la catequesis sacramental provista por la parroquia, cada candidato debe asistir a un retiro de un día. El Retiro Diocesano se llevará a cabo el 11 de noviembre de 2017 de 8 a.m. a 12 p.m. en la Capilla 1200 de Our Lady of Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi, TX. Candidatos para la confirmación de adultos: Candidatos que tienen 18 años (no están en la escuela secundaria) y mayores de edad. Los candidatos no pueden estar en una relación de cohabitación o matrimonio irregular. La confirmación no se llevará a cabo hasta que esta situación se rectifique. Pautas para patrocinadores:

El patrocinador debe ser un católico practicante con la Iglesia, al menos dieciséis años y que haya recibido los sacramentos del Bautismo, la Eucaristía y la Confirmación. Los individuos que están en matrimonios irregulares, en una relación de cohabitación o no practican su fe católica no pueden ser patrocinadores. Los padres no pueden ser patrocinadores.
