Times Are-a-Changing It all started when Father Altier got assigned down south to assist Father Kasel and his three parishes with five worship spaces and six Masses. Father Peterson was also helping, but with his sketchy health, who knew how long before Father Altier would not be

able to do the Extraordinary Form Mass at 8:00 AM. The answer came when Father Kasel decided that Pine Island would do an Extraordinary Form at 7:00 AM, and he and Father Altier would take turns saying it. I scoured the Archdiocese to find a priest who could say the Mass at 8:00, but no dice. Game over for that Mass to be said at 8:00 AM. The only way I could use Father Altier or any other priest, for that matter, was to move the Extraordinary Form Mass to 12:30.

So, that is what we did and nobody was happy. 12:30 was a horrible time, but there no other time we could do it. Father Altier could not be there every Sunday, so Father Brenna was a short term fix to help. Attendance dwindled at 12:30. At the end of May, Father Altier finds out that he is being moved to Crystal and Father Brenna informs me that he is done on a regular basis. Meanwhile, I looked at the instructional video on how to do the Extraordinary form Mass and get totally spooked and intimidated at all the rubrics and Latin that I have to commit to memory, thinking, “I can barely say the Mass in English, and I mess up a lot of times with that. If I do the EF, it will take me three hours to finish it.” Of course there are folks encouraging me to learn it. Deacon Rip Riordan worked really hard to get together a plan to help us out, and eventually the three amigos of Fathers Jaspers, Kowalczyk and Hagen, arrive in July.

However, attendance was still dwindling and the time of the Mass was the culprit. The three amigos were open to have the Mass at 11:30 AM, which would mean moving the 10:30 Mass to 10:00, and me hightailing it from Cannon Falls to make it on time. It is doable and was agreeable by Saint Joseph’s Pastoral Council. The only conundrum, besides me being ticketed for speeding, would be when to schedule baptisms. I do encourage folks to have their baby baptized during Mass. Otherwise, between me, Deacon Kevin, and Father Siebenaler, we can figure things out.—TB

Reminder— November 1,

All Saints Day, is a Holy Day of Obligation,

meaning missing it would be the same as missing Sunday Mass. So, see you in Church before you go trick or treating and/or the Vikings game. Or the next day. —TB

Stewards Among Us

Priesthood Sunday

Whenever we interact with our priests, do we see them as human and frail like the rest of humanity? Or on the other hand, do we see them as supermen, able to withstand all the stresses and strains of being human?

I hope you see your priest as very human. Quite possibly, even more human than most of us. Why? Because they not only have their own struggles being human, but they accompany us in our humanness too.

Therefore, this Priesthood Sunday, turn the tables. Attempt to be the listener to the human side of your priest. Do not automatically tell him your troubles; begin by asking him what is going on in his life. Thank him warmly for giving up so much to spend his life in service to others. Try it. You might be surprised to find out your priest is just like you!

My wife is on the shorter side so she has always had a great love for the story of Zacchaeus, the wealthy tax collector that was too small to see Jesus over the crowd so he climbed a tree in order to see better. For many years she was a catechist and loved telling that story to children because by their age alone they were short. My wife and Zacchaeus are proof that good things come in small packages. But Zacchaeus' size is not why Jesus showed him favor. It was his faith in Jesus and his eagerness to serve him.

Climbing a tree is not always a safe way to gain a better vantage point to see. But if you were really moved to see someone very important, you might risk it. Hosting someone in your house that you admire or want desperately to please can be nerve-racking. But the chance to be near that person and show your love makes it all worth it. And it is not an easy commitment to change one's entire life and become a new person. But if you believed that the one asking you was the source of all life, the commitment might be seen as a necessity.

We should pray every day for the desire and excitement of Zacchaeus when it comes to our relationship with Jesus Christ. If we are intentional disciples, we have had an encounter with the Lord much like Zacchaeus. However, our decision to live a stewardship way of life can sometimes be delayed. If we are like Zacchaeus, our sheer love of Christ will propel us to give all we have to him and resolve to live transformed lives of generosity. No matter how small we are it is the enormity of our love for God, and his love for us, that makes all the difference. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS © Liturgical Publications Inc

My husband and I left on Tuesday morning for another routine visit to Rochester, May to find out how to regulate my one year battle with erratic blood pressure. After my routine draw, I met with the doctor whom did not even say good morning, just “I want you to go immediately to the emergency room at St. Mary’s Hospital, they are waiting for you there”. I was admitted for one day of observation. After five room changes, checking in different departments, I was sent to

surgery and ended up with a pacemaker. I cannot tell you how much better I feel. This has answered a year of bad health and deep concern. I am extremely grateful and humbled by the Mayo and more importantly by the Power of God.

I did all I could at home, but the prayers and more prayers from our many friends, family and Church family, God stepped in and said “This will be fixed”. I have never felt this well and getting stronger every day. My heart is overflowing with a sense of gratitude and humble feelings to all of you. This experience has taught me to do whatever I can for myself, but in the end God has always got the upper hand and He will take care of me. Thank You to all for your prayers and well wishes. May God, too, Bless you all. Shirley Alm

THANK YOU for your generous response to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith last weekend on World Mission Sunday. While some go to serve in other countries to develop the Church and serve its people, all of us are called to pray and support the Missions from right where we live. To continue answering this call, download the Missio App which makes it possible for you to meet and support religious Sisters and Brothers, priests and dedicated lay leaders who provide help and hope in some of the world's poorest places. These missionaries provide essential education and health care, social outreach and advocacy, and pastoral service. They address basic human needs, while in every moment offering spiritual comfort and support to the suffering and the marginalized. Join them in mission every day as you joined them this past World Mission Sunday!

Voting guides are available on the bookshelf in the north stairwell at St. Pius V in Cannon Falls and in the entryways at St. Joseph’s in Miesville.

Join Us for an Open House at Saint Thomas Academy!

Time, Talent & Treasure This weekend we ask that you fill out the time, talent & treasure forms. Please prayerfully consider your involvement. Forms are available in the pews or in the main entrances.

Appalachia Christmas Semi The ACCW is again sponsoring the Appalachia Kentucky Christmas Semi to be held at the Hupf Farm. The semi is at our farm through Thursday, November 10. As always we can only accept new items and the need is ever so great. I had the opportunity this fall to go to Kentucky and was so welcomed by the Priests, Sisters and Volunteers. There is a letter and brochure in your church, but if you would like me to e-mail or send you a copy by mail,. please give me a call at 507-263-2705 or e-mail [email protected]. Did you know? HALLOWEEN has its origins in the ancient pagan Celtic and Roman fall festivals which com-memorated the new year and the passing of the dead. Pope Boniface VI set November 1 as All Saint's Day, known as All Hallowsmas, from Middle English Alholowmesse. When November 2 was made All Souls Day 200 years later, the three days' celebration was called Hallowmas. The customs of Halloween, costumes, food and parties evolved over time, some rooted in ancient rites, others in remembrance of those who had died. These pagan feasts were Christianized by new meanings, although today it remains largely a secular holiday. ~Rev. James Gaffney
