Our Challenge
Dear friends,
We don’t actually know who wrote the Book of the Prophet Malachi from which this weekend’s first reading comes. The title “Malachi” comes from chapter 3, verse 1, and means “my messenger.” After the Jewish exiles returned from Babylon, the people did not keep their covenant with God through irreverence and injustice. God’s messenger sends a word of judgment on both the people and on their leaders who were failing to lead the people in righteousness. In our second reading from his letter to the earliest Christian Church in Thessalonika, Greece, St. Paul used his ministry as an example of leadership. He could have used his authority from God and taken a very hard line with these new Christians. Instead he was as gentle with them as a mother cares for her child. In this weekend’s gospel passage, Jesus makes the point that he was not upset by the Law. He was upset by the way the Law was not being acted upon. He faulted the Pharisees not for what they taught, but for the way they lived. If we believe that we are more compassionate than our ancient brothers and sisters, it is often the case that the Christian community resembles a place where the elite are honored and the ordinary ignored. Discerning how to find our place as a child of God within humanity is often difficult. However, Christ is calling his disciples to become servants rather than to strive to be a part of the elite. Christ tells us that in humbling ourselves we are exalted. This is a total reversal of what the world seems to tell us. But as Tolstoy has said, “Jesus Christ teaches men that there is something in them above this life with its hurries, its pleasures and fears. He who understands Christ’s teaching feels like a bird that did not know it has wings and now suddenly realizes that it can fly, can be free and no longer needs to fear.” Have a good week!

Organ Concert by Karol Mossakowski
Thursday, November 9, 2017, 6:30 PM
St. Aloysius Church will host internationally known organist, Karol Mossakowski, in a concert on our parish’s Casavant Organ. Karol Mossakowski is renowned for both his interpretation and improvisation skills. He has shaped his deep musical personnality since the age of three, when he began to study the piano and the organ with his father. After musical studies in Poland with Elżbieta Karolak and Jarosław Tarnawski, he entered the organ, improvisation, and composition classes at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris as a student of Olivier Latry, Michel Bouvard, Thierry Escaich, Philippe Lefebvre et László Fassang. This program will include works by classical German and French composers, and will conclude with an impro-visation on a submitted theme.

RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is in the church at 3:30 p.m. (when the 4:30 p.m. Vigil Mass is sched-uled) on Saturdays, from 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. (when the 8:00 a.m. Mass is sched-uled) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, on re-quest Monday and Wednesday immediately after the 6:00 a.m. Mass (when scheduled), or anytime by appointment with either priest. Please call the Church Office 343-6657 to schedule an appointment.
FUNERALS Please contact the Pastoral Center prior to scheduling with the funeral home. If after hours, follow directions on voicemail.
BAPTISM Please contact the Pastoral Center during early months of pregnancy. Baptismal preparation is required.
SPONSORS Baptism & Confirmation sponsors must be confirmed practicing Catholics in good standing in the Catholic Church, and if not St. Aloysius Parishioners, must provide a letter of good standing from the parish where they are registered.
CONFIRMATION Teens confirm the fall of their junior year of high school. Preparation is required, includ-ing PSR for teens not enrolled in a Catholic school. Adult confirmation is hosted annual-ly for anyone over 18. Please contact the
parish office for more detailed information.
MARRIAGE Couples are asked to contact the priest at the beginning of the period of engagement at least six months prior to the projected date of the marriage.
CARE OF THE SICK Communion is brought to the sick weekly and hospital visits made weekly. Families of the sick are encouraged to notify the parish office.

GIVING TREE For many years St. Aloysius Parish has come together during the Advent Season with our traditional Giving Tree. As our focus turns to Christmas and Christmas shopping, the Giving Tree provides a way for parishioners to help those in need. St. Aloysius parishioners and students have worked to design ornaments that represent each of the particular ministries that make up the Giving Tree. You may choose an ornament from the baskets at the side doors of the church from November 18th through December 17th OR until the ornaments run out.
Please pay particular attention to the items requested and the deadline for your gift to be returned to the church.
You may keep your ornament as a reminder of our parish effort to help those in need. Please remember to pray for all those in need this holiday season. A special prayer is included on the back of the Giving Tree booklets located on the tables along with the ornaments.
Please return your UNWRAPPED gifts by the requested due date (December 10th or December 17th) TO THE DESIGNATED BOXES in the BACK of the church.

Children’s Church is offered to all children in grades Pre-K through 2nd. Available at most 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Masses. Children are given the opportunity to hear the Liturgy of the Word on an age appropriate level. Children will be invited after the Opening Blessing to leave the church with the catechists and will return just before Offertory.
