31˚ Domingo en Tiempo Ordinario 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time November 3rd, 2019 God in Nature The Amazing Octopus Everyone knows what an octopus looks like but very few know exactly how absolutely amazing these creatures truly are. There are approximately 300 recognized species of oc- topus. The octopus is in a class known as cephalopods. This class also includes mollusks such as squids. Octopus live in every ocean of the world. Their sizes range from the smallest (Octopus wolfi) which is shorter than an inch long and weighing less than one (1) gram to the largest (the giant Pacific octopus) that typically grow to sixteen (16) feet long and weigh an excess of 600 pounds! They are widely con- sidered by the scientific community to be the worlds most intelligent invertebrate...and by a wide mar- gin. They are able to use tools such as empty coconut shells as shelter, they can open jars (even while inside of the jar), and even escape from aquarium tanks in order to feed on fish in adjacent tanks. They can also manipulate their bodies to squeeze in and out of extremely small spaces that would normally not accommodate them. Octopuses (not octopi) have three (3) hearts, nine (9) brains and have blue blood cir- culating through their bodies. Octopuses has four pairs of arms; they do not have tentacles. Their arms each contain a small brain which allows them to operate independently of each other. The ninth (9 th ) brain is the largest and operates the nervous system. Octopuses do most of their traveling by crawling or walking on the sea floor, not swimming. When they walk, they shut down the two (2) hearts that provide blood to their vital organs and only operate the largest heart which circulates blood to the rest of the body in an effort to make walking less tiresome. Interestingly enough, their arms also contain light sensitive indicators which allow them to adjust to changes in light. This means that they are able change the color and texture of their entire skin to camouflage themselves in order to evade predators or hunt their prey. For all of the splendor that is the octopus, they happen to live very short lives. Most live only a few years and some species have been known to die after only six months. The octopus is also famous for its ink. They contain large ink sacs inside their bodies. Upon becoming alarmed, they discharge the ink in a powerful jet in one direction while propelling themselves in the opposite direction effectively clouding the water in an effort to confuse their prey. Our God has provided us with so much on this earth to mar- vel at. It is said that we have explored more of Space than we have our very own oceans. Who knows what other marvels God has in store in our very own aquatic basement?

God in Nature The Amazing Octopus

Everyone knows what an octopus looks like but very few

know exactly how absolutely amazing these creatures truly

are. There are approximately 300 recognized species of oc-

topus. The octopus is in a class known as cephalopods.

This class also includes mollusks such as squids. Octopus

live in every ocean of the world. Their sizes range from the

smallest (Octopus wolfi) which is shorter than an inch long

and weighing less than one (1) gram to the largest (the giant

Pacific octopus) that typically grow to sixteen (16) feet long

and weigh an excess of 600 pounds! They are widely con-

sidered by the scientific community to be the world’s most intelligent invertebrate...and by a wide mar-

gin. They are able to use tools such as empty coconut shells as shelter, they can open jars (even while

inside of the jar), and even escape from aquarium tanks in order to feed on fish in adjacent tanks. They

can also manipulate their bodies to squeeze in and out of extremely small spaces that would normally not

accommodate them. Octopuses (not octopi) have three (3) hearts, nine (9) brains and have blue blood cir-

culating through their bodies. Octopuses has four pairs of arms; they do not have tentacles. Their arms

each contain a small brain which allows them to operate independently of each other. The ninth (9th)

brain is the largest and operates the nervous system. Octopuses do most of their traveling by crawling or

walking on the sea floor, not swimming. When they walk, they shut down the two (2) hearts that provide

blood to their vital organs and only operate the largest heart which circulates blood to the rest of the body

in an effort to make walking less tiresome. Interestingly enough, their arms also contain light sensitive

indicators which allow them to adjust to changes in light. This means that they are able change the color

and texture of their entire skin to camouflage themselves in order to evade predators or hunt their prey.

For all of the splendor that is the octopus, they happen to live very short lives. Most live only a few years

and some species have been known to die after only six months. The octopus is also famous for its ink.

They contain large ink sacs inside their bodies. Upon becoming alarmed, they discharge the ink in a

powerful jet in one direction while propelling themselves in the opposite direction effectively clouding

the water in an effort to confuse their prey. Our God has provided us with so much on this earth to mar-

vel at. It is said that we have explored more of Space than we have our very own oceans. Who knows

what other marvels God has in store in our very own aquatic basement?
