CIVIL_WAR_SOLDIER PHOTOGRAPHS

If you lend your photo of a Civil War veteran for copying, the Department of the Army will send you a free 8 x 10 copy of each one you send. Their goal is to have a likeness of every Civil War soldier. Include information such as name, rank, unit and dates of birth and death. If you write first, they will send a franked label, so you can mall photos without paying postage, or you may use certified mall. Write to: Michael J. Winey, Curator, Dept. of the Army, U.S. Army Military History Institute, Carlisle Barracks, PA 17013-5008. (Genealogical Aids Bulletin, Vol. 18-2, Nov. 1988, Miami Valley Gen. Society, Chapter of Ohio Gen. Society)

NEWS ‘N’ NOTES

Excerpts from the St. Louis Genealogical Society Newsletter, Vol. 21, No. 8

The United Methodist Archives for the entire U.S. are located on the campus of Drew University, Madison, NJ 07940. They will reply to letters directed to P.O. Box 127 (Connecticut Society of Genealogists, Vol. 22, No. 1, June 1989).

The South Carolina Department of Archives and History may close 4-8 months beginning in the Fall or Winter of 1989 for asbestos abatement and building renovation. If you have been planning to take a trip down there you should write or call beforehand: S.C. Dept of Archives & History, P.O. Box 11669, Columbia, SC 29211, Phone 603/734-8577 (S.C. Gen. Society, Spring, 1989).

If you are researching in Iowa, you may like to know that the state conducted censuses in 1856, 1865, 1895, 1905, 1915 and 1925. The Iowa Genealogical Library is in the Clarkson Building, 6000 Douglas, Des Moines, Iowa 50310 (Pioneer Sons and Daughters Gen. Soc.. June 1989).

The Office of History, Presbyterian Church (USA), 425 Lombard St., Philadelphia, PA 19147 has a considerable wealth of material relevant to family name studies. The society has over 20.000 volumes of official manuscript records from American Presbyterian and Reformed local congre-gations and higher judicatories across the country.

The Society's library contains over 200,000 published materials which may be of interest. Many family papers are included. The church records are cataloged by city, followed by name of the congregation, therefore, it is essential to know the proper name of the specific congregation or other organization with which the individual was associated.

While open to the public, the library does not do research for you. If researching records less than 75 years old, you must have the permission of the church whose records you are checking or the appropriate Presbytery if the church is no longer in existence.

ROCKVILLE

Taken from The Kankakee Gazette, March 2, 1876

Feb. 28 - Our hog market beats Chicago all hollow. For instance; at Mr. Raymond's sale on the 17th, two sows were sold for $80.

Mr. Robert Kinkaid has purchased a portion of his brother's estate and goes right to work putting on improvements. He has received several car loads of lumber which will go into a new house and barn. The basement will be built of stone from the quarries of Robinson brothers. Mr. K. is a stiring, wide-awake Pennsylvanian, and a thorough business man. May he meet with that success in his new location he 53 well deserves is the wish of the many friends he has acquired during his short residence in the town.

Mr. George Guilford, our tax collector, is nearing the close of his labors. He reports the majority as paying only their personal tax and postponing their land tax until "the sweet by and by". George thinks this hardly fair, as he does all the work for a small share of the pay.

The marriage of Mr. Jerome Grimes and Miss Ella Kinkaid took place Feb. 22d, at the Kinkaid farm, Rev. Mr. French, of Peotone, officiating. A large number of guests witnessed the ceremony, among whom were Mr. & Mrs. James Kinkaid, Mr. A. Kinkaid, and Miss Ryan of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kinkaid, Mr. and Mrs C. P. Grimes, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Bloom, Mr. and Mrs. John Mann, Mr. and Mrs. Bray, Mr. and Mrs. Vanderwaters, Mrs. Mary A. Grimes, Mr. Isaac Vanderwaters, Miss Ida Vanderwaters, Miss Edith Bloom, Mr. D. Bloom, Miss Florence Mann, Mr. C. Grimes, Miss Ella Grimes, Miss Nettie Grimes, Mr. J. Robinson, and many others. The bride was richly attired in prune silk, and all vied with each other in complimenting and congratulating

the happy couple. In the evening a dance was given in honor of the happy event at the residence of the bridegroom's father, Mr. C. P. Grimes.

Mr. Vanderwaters is manufacturing quite a number of wheel-barrows of his own invention which he will place on trial among the farmers this spring. We understand he has applied for a patent.

Yes, after leaving the Center, John gave an entertainment in district No. 1. J. is evidently a little lame on the "definitions', but will learn his little piece in time. Search the scriptures, John, and you will find that “a prophet hath no honor in his own country".

Talk of happiness, Mr. Straws! why, two mammoth sunflowers would not be a circumstance.
