WELCOMEIt’s been a very fast 5 years with so muchhappening in film in Offaly. In 2014, we welcomenumerous overseas visitors to the Festival fromas far away as the USA, Denmark and the UK,thanks in part to funding from the CommunityTourism Diaspora Fund, a three-way partner-ship between Fáilte Ireland, IPB Insurance and Offaly County Council. This year we havehad close to 600 entries to our Short FilmCompetition from 52 countries. There’s nodoubt that the word is out there about OFFline!We welcome the addition of a new partner toour Festival, access>CINEMA, who willdistribute The Best Irish Short Film selected atOFFline to all film clubs in Ireland (over 80 intotal). We strive to be an inclusive Festival andto that end we’ve partnered with Laois OffalyFamilies For Autism for our first SensoryScreening taking place in IMC Tullamore. Wehave specially selected films for youth audiences(although scheduled during school, all arewelcome!). We’re also catering for new mammiesand daddies out there with Film Babes in BirrLibrary, just one of a selection of eventshappening in Offaly libraries during the Festival.

There is a range of workshops and screeningsto choose from too; from Sand Animation toSFX Halloween Make-Up, to the Big Bear LiveSound Effects Brunch! Some local schools areeven getting involved in the sand animation inthe weeks leading up to the Festival. As always,the Filmmaking Challenge will see groups ofvisiting professionals create a 10-minutemasterpiece in the space of 3 days - with the

final result ready for your enjoy-ment on Sundayafternoon at Birr Theatre. So come along to thenumerous venues through-out the town - The Edit Shed, Spinners on Castle Street, BirrTheatre & Arts Centre, The Chestnut (OfficialFestival Club), Tin Jug Studio and MarketSquare over the 5 days of the Festival. You’re in for a treat!

FILMMAKING CHALLENGE JURYGARRET DALYGarret Daly has over 20 years experience in film andtelevision production. His film and documentary work hasscreened on all the major Irish broadcasters and on variousinternational networks, and has gained critical acclaimworldwide. His short film ‘Bogman’ premiered at OFFline in 2011. Garret’s first feature film, ‘A Nightingale Falling’,co-directed with Martina McGlynn, premiered at the GalwayFilm Fleadh, and was so popular that a second screeningwas required. It received the Best Independent FeatureAward at the 2014 Underground Cinema Festival, and wasreleased in Irish cinemas nationwide in September.

PADDY O’CONNORFilmmaker Paddy O’Connor has made numerousdocumentaries including the award-winning ‘The Gamble’,part of the RTÉ True Lives series. Other RTÉ screeneddocumentaries, include ‘The Hill’ and ‘Jolly Fine BoatingWeather’. Paddy has been a member of the Galway FilmFleadh’s selection committee for all short drama and shortdocumentaries for the past seven years. He alsoprogrammes the Wild Cards & On the Box strands forGalway Film Fleadh.

NIALL MURPHYNiall Murphy is the Founder and Managing Editor ofScannáin, a website launched in 2009, dedicated to filmnews and reviews, with a distinctly Irish focus. Scannáin has received four nominations at the 2014 Irish Web Awards,Best Daily Web Only Publication, Best Entertainment, BestResponsive Design, and Most Useful Website in Ireland!

BEST IRISH SHORT JURYKAREN WALLKaren Wall joined access>CINEMA, the resourceorganisation for regional cultural cinema exhibition inIreland as DVD Programme Coordinator in 2012. PreviouslyKaren had worked in the Irish Film Institute in variousguises from Projectionist and Print Transport Coordinator toFestival Facilitator and Access Officer in the Film Archive.Having studied Film and Television Production and IrishHeritage Studies, Karen is now completing an OpenHonours Degree with the Open University focusing onBusiness Studies and Sociology.

MANCHÁN MAGANManchán Magan is a writer and documentary maker. His many travel documentaries for RTE, TG4, the TravelChannel and the History Channel, focus on issues of world

culture and globalisation and his programmes are shown in25 territories. Manchán has written numerous books abouthis travels and two novels. He also writes regularly for TheIrish Times and has written for The Guardian, The LA Timesand The Washington Post.

MATTHEW McATEERBirr native Dr. Matthew McAteer was the recipient of the Radharc Archive Scholarship, a four year partnershipbetween the Radharc Trust, the Irish Film Archive andUniversity College Dublin. Matthew is currently adaptinginto a book his Ph.D. thesis on ‘Radharc’, a long-runningRTÉ series produced by Catholic priests, and he teachesfilm studies in UCD's School of English, Drama and Film.

ALICE BLACKAlice Black is the Head of Cinema at Dundee ContemporaryArts (DCA), an internationally recognised contemporary artsvenue in the North-East of Scotland which runs an award-winning daily cinema programme and two major filmfestivals: Discovery: Scotland's Film Festival for YoungerAudiences and Dundead Horror Film Festival. A filmprogrammer for 20 years, she has previously worked forMoMA and the French Embassy in New York, as well asaccess>CINEMA and the Irish Film Institute in Ireland.

IAN FRANCISIan Francis gave invaluable advice to the OFFline team priorto the Festival being established and we’re delighted towelcome Ian to OFFline to celebrate our first 5 years. Ian has clocked up 15 years putting on film events inBirmingham and beyond. In 2006, he co-founded FlatpackFilm Festival with partner Pip McKnight. Flatpack is amixture of films, performances, contraptions and surprises,and has been described as “magnificently eclectic” (TimeOut), “joyously inventive” (The Guardian) and “the UK’s mostcreatively curated film festival” (The Independent).

EUGENE O’BRIENEdenderry native Eugene O’Brien has been a good friend to OFFline. Eugene’s play ‘Eden’ won an Irish Times Awardfor Best New Play in 2001. ‘Eden’ was staged in the AbbeyTheatre, Dublin, London's West End and also on Broadwayand was brought to the big screen in 2008. Eugene’stelevision credits include the award-winning series ‘Pure Mule’.More recently, Eugene appeared in ‘A Grand Experience’, a feature-length documentary about The Grand Canal.Eugene also co-wrote ‘Food Guide to Love’, a romanticcomedy which was released in Irish cinemas in May 2014.

Coming from a familydevastated by cancer and frustrated with thepharmaceutical "cancer industry", Michaelbegan researching alternative cannabinoidtreatments being used to fight and cure cancerto great effect around the world today. Hisresearch took him to Israel to meet worldrenowned organic chemist Professor RaphaelMechoulam. Inspired by the work of ProfessorMechoulam, Michael set about growing his owncrop of cannabis in his garden shed, which hethen distilled into a cannabis oil and began to
