In which the President attempts to whip up unbridled enthusiasm for the Ault Park Concours. Most likely everyone is aware of the June 9, 2013 Ault Park Concours. And even 356 drivers grudgingly concede that 2013 is the 50th anniversary of the 911’s unveil-ing at the Geneva Auto Show. So it is no surprise that Porsche is the featured mark this year at the 2013 Ault Park Concours. What I am sure you do not know is how much good work long time OVR Member Dave Hall has put into assembling a stellar collection of Porsches to display this year. I drastically understate the case when I tell you about Dave’s success in assembling a great collection in five classes of early 911’s, late 911’s, other Porsches (914/924/924/928 etc.), racing Porsches, and Porsche super cars. And of course this amazing line up is in addition to the 356’s that Carl Isemann and the rest of the 356 faithful have put together. So I am encouraging all members of the faithful to get out to the Park on June 9 to join me in enjoying Dave and Carl’s great success. Now in an attempt to harness this potential mass migration, let me point out that the good folks at Ault Park Concours (special thanks to OVR member Rich Frantz) have set aside a 30 car, first come, first served Porsche Corral close to the entrance for us to conveniently park our P-cars. Look for the parking Corral as you enter the park at the bottom of the hill. However, please keep in mind this Porsche parking Corral is a self-policing perk extended to us by the Ault Park organiz-ers for Porsche car drivers to congregate. If you are driving your Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Vista Cruiser Station Wagon with Wood Paneling that day, Porsche Club member-ship does not extend a parking space to your Oldsmobile, or for that matter your Yugo, Simca, Renault, Fiat or Lada. But if you want to drive your Tatra that day, talk to me and I will get you special dispensation to park in the Porsche Corral. So come early, stay late, all your Porsche friends will be there. If I get there first, I will chalk a blue line on the ground at the entrance. If you get there first, you rub it out.

My wife and I visited the Lane Motor museum in Nashville, TN last month. It’s a great place for anyone who enjoys cars even if the museum only displays one Porsche. They specialize in European vehicles that are technically significant or uniquely different. The range of vehicles is vast, from a 1965 Peel 50 (the smallest passenger car made) to a 1959 LARC-LX amphibious vehicle (weighs in at 194,000 pounds). The LARC-LX was made for the mili-tary. The Peel and most of the other cars are for use on the street. Many of the cars on display were of limited production numbers, some with only one vehicle being made. I’m sure their manufacturers had dreams of mass production. This reminded me of the early days of Porsche 356 production taking place in a sawmill in Austria. In 1948 did Ferdinand Porsche ever think that his company would grow to produce over 140,000 vehicles per year in 2012? That cars with his name on them would be known and sold all over the world? The museum is a good place to reflect on the growth of the automobile industry from its start to present day, consisting of companies like Porsche A.G. One interesting car in the collection is the 1919 Leyat Helico, a car driven by a propeller. A French pilot and engineer was convinced this was the car of the future. On a similar road, I’ve been following the development of the Skycar, a vertical takeoff and landing flying car that you can also drive on the street. This project doesn’t seem much farther along than when I first read about it back in 2001 but the ideas behind it seem brilliant. I guess time will tell if this is the future of personal transportation. At the present time it’s great that we can enjoy our Porsches at the events put on by our Porsche club. Whether it’s dis-playing your car at the Ault Park Concours or exercising it at Mid-Ohio or Kil-Kare speedways, just be glad Dr. Porsche and others worked hard at a sawmill in Austria in 1948.

Have fun with your Porsche this month.

It has come to my attention that some OVR/PCA mem-bers may not be receiving OVR PCA e-blasts. The e-blast is a communications tool that is used by event chairs, board members, and others to provide updates and reminders to the entire membership base concerning club activities and events. E-blasts for all PCA regions are generated through the PCA National e-mail system and unfortunately they may look like spam or junk-mail to some receiving e-mail systems. Last month, May, there were eleven e-blasts sent to the OVR/PCA full member-ship, and so far this month, there have been six. These e-blasts are not to be confused with news that comes in e-mail form from PCA National or from Porsche. The issue was discovered and so far has been isolated to some AOL Time Warner RoadRunner accounts and the lineage extends at least to 2011. Please check your e-mail account to insure that you are receiving OVR/PCA e-blasts. One member has worked through AOL and is still not receiving e-blasts. Another member changed his PCA e-mail address to an alternate address and immediately started receiving e-blasts. In addition to contacting AOL locally, the PCA National Webmaster has been contacted and is taking the lead. If e-blasts sent through the PCA e-mailer to OVR members are being blocked, it is very likely that other regions are having the exact same issue.PCA National is currently beta testing a new e-mailer and it is set to go live after the Parade. It would be helpful to get a count of those who have not been receiving e-blasts. Please let me know by e-mailing me at OVR/[email protected].

IRAC Autocross at Kil-Kare SpeedwayJackie Bergdahl-Autocross Chair

We held the first autocross of the Inter Region Autocross (IRAC) season on the oval at Kil-Kare Raceway in Xenia, Ohio on Saturday, May 11th. There were 20 entrants with half being novices to autocross. The novices were all driving Porsches except for one. As usual, there were some beauti-ful cars at the event. My favorite, driven by Corey Jackowski, was a Cayman in an interesting matte green color, which the proud owner called “candy-apple matte green,” a stainless steel and black spoiler, and cool wheels. It looked fast stand-ing still. We started out with light rain, but the track dried up nicely for our afternoon runs. We had two run groups of ten. There was one 996 that would not always trip the finish timer; the driver claimed an invisible stealth technology was to blame. But other than giving the occasional extra run, the new wire-less timer was easy to set up and use. One Cayman S driver came only to watch, but we quickly talked him into driving. I accepted his promise to pay the entrance fee at the next board meeting. He was in my run group, so I didn’t get to see if he was having fun, but he ran all ten runs and helped pick up the track, so I think that indicates he had a good time. The fastest time of day (FTD) went to a PCA member driving in the X-Class with a Mercedes AMG. It was amazing to see that sedan fly around the course! Mike Tepley from the Mid-Ohio Region had the Porsche FTD for men and I had the FTD for women. The next IRAC autocross event will be hosted by MOR at the Columbus Motor Speedway on June 2nd. IRAC is a great opportunity to meet other regions’ members, try out new driving venues and see beautiful cars being driven skillfully. You need to attend four of seven IRAC events to be included in awards. The awards banquet is following the last event; I list the schedule below. Contact the individual regions if you have questions about a particular event, or you can contact me for general questions.IRAC Schedule 2013Sunday, June 2 Mid-Ohio Region (MOR) at Columbus Motor Speedway, Columbus, OhioSunday, July 7 Miami Valley Region (MVR) at Owens Community College, Perrysburg, OhioSunday, July 21 Northern Ohio Region (NOR) at Lakeland Community College, Kirtland, OhioSunday, August 11 MOR at Columbus Motor Speedway, Columbus, OhioSunday, September 22 NOR at Lakeland Community College, Kirtland, OhioSaturday, October 19 Allegeny Region (AR) at Console Field, Washington, PA

This year, when we couldn’t come up with a car theme location for our annual Wine Tasting event, we decided to give the Little Red Schoolhouse in Indian Hill a try. I’ll admit I was a bit concerned when it looked like our attendance was going to be off. However, as the 55 or so attendees proved, you can still have a great successful event if it is for a good cause, the location is interesting and very well suited, the price is right, there is a great selection of fine wine, and last but not least, a gathering of OVR members and friends.

Our Winemeister Grant Karnes did an outstanding job with the wine selections. We had 8 whites and 15 reds ranging in price from $12 to $65 with all having very good to out-standing Wine Spectator ratings. Most selections were from California but Italy, Germany, Spain, New Zealand and Aus-tralia were also represented. The best bargain was the Wolf Blass Yellow Label 2010 Shiraz at $11.99 which received a WS 88 rating. The Schloss Vollrads 2011 Riesling was a delightful selection for those times when you want some-thing with a mouthful of flavor and just a hint of sweetness. It retails for $19.99 and has an outstanding WS 90 rating. Think you can’t find a highly rated Italian red for under $50? Check out the Ornellaia Le Volte ’09 Toscana IGT. It has a WS 90 rating and retails for $27.99. Many red wine con-noisseurs thought that the $64.99 Chalk Hill 2009 Estate Red was under rated at 92 and, while the $39.99 Kuleto Estate’08 Syrah was an excellent wine, it was maybe over rated at 93. Which just goes to prove that you should drink what you like and just use the experts’ opinions as a guide. The auction was as lively as ever with Frank Albi in great form as auctioneer. Thanks to all who attended and espe-cially those who helped us get rid of the reserve stock that was auctioned off. We should be able to send our charities, both the One Way Farm Children’s Home and the Chil-dren’s Tumor Foundation some nice checks.

Autioneer Frank Albi and Winemeister Grant Karnes.

All in all it turned out to be another fun OVR Wine Tast-ing. The facilities at the Schoolhouse were excellent. A full kitchen allowed us to serve some hot food as well as the usual cheese and crackers. Great Porsche parking was available and we didn’t have to rent tables and chairs. Thanks Grant for chairing a great event.

Spring DE at Mid-Ohio Sports Car CourseGary Nichols- OVR Spring DE Chair Photos by Daniel Mainzer Photography and Wade Huston

OVR’s annual spring DE at Mid-Ohio is now history, and I would first like to thank all of the folks who worked so hard on behalf of the club to make this year’s event a rousing success. For those who arrived to drop off trailers and cars on Thursday afternoon, they were greeted with an unusual sight. In the middle paddock, on the entrance roads, and on the track were around forty Ohio State Highway Patrol cruisers and an equal number of fully uniformed State Troopers. Best of all, none of them were wagging their fingers at any of us! Ohio’s Governor Kasich has put in place a program for every State Trooper in Ohio to attend a half day HPDE at Mid-Ohio, and plans are to continue that program again next year. A few of us were able to talk with some of their driving instructors, and were much impressed with their program and their level of expertise.Friday arrived cold and damp with dreary skies. Instruc-tors and solo students had to take it easy as the tempera-tures never made it out of the forties all day. The only hot spot was sitting in Bruce McKenney’s Honda in the hot pit area. Thanks to Bruce for handling hot pit duties and the black flag station for the entire three days. Mid-Ohio had received a significant amount of rain prior to the event, so drivers were greeted with running water at several loca-tions on track. My thanks to all drivers on Friday for being aware of the poor conditions, as we were able to make it through with only a couple of issues.Tired, cold and worn out, Friday folks met those students arriving for Saturday and Sunday sessions at the event headquarter hotel, the Quality Inn, where all were treated to a pizza party in conjunction with registration and tech inspection. A fine evening of bench racing ensued. Instruc-tors were introduced, and all registrants received mechanic style gloves with the Porsche name and logo embossed on them. Saturday morning found 160+ drivers and instructors anxious to get on track. Hot coffee and hot chocolate were in great demand at garage 7 as the morning temps were in the thirties. After the driver and instructor meetings, the day’s sessions began in earnest. Conditions again were less than optimal, but that did not deter the enthusiasm of the drivers. As the day wore on track conditions improved slightly, and all looked forward to the sunny and warm (finally!) forecast for Sunday. At the close of sessions Saturday, 35 or so hearty students stayed on to participate in a track walk. OVR instructors manned six corners; students were divided into groups, and spent ten minutes at each station, then drove on to the next one. This was well received by all, and we plan to do this again. For once the weatherman got it right. Sunday morning found all staring at clear skies, low wind, with a forecast in the sixties by noon. Cars that had previously not turned

a wheel made their way onto the track, and run sessions were full. The winter coats were put away, and even a few beads of sweat were seen on drivers exiting their cars with big smiles on their faces. The ranks thinned out a bit after lunch, but the hard core stayed until the final checkered flag. It was great to end the weekend on a high note. For all who participated, my thanks on being courteous drivers, and we hope you will return with us again in the fall. We look forward to greeting old friends and making new ones.

Instructor sessions were busy.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay, the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa will host our fun-filled 58th Porsche Parade June 23 through 29, 2013. The Porsche Parade is the PCA’s annual convention. It is a week-long extravaganza of car events, tech sessions, social events and FUN. Whether you like to autocross, rally, tour, or concours, there is plenty to do and see. Attendance is roughly 2000 people, most of whom arrive in their beautiful and much loved Porsche automobile. You must register in advance for Parade as there is no onsite signup. There is a link to register on www.pca.org and parade2013.pca.org. The Porsche Concours d’Elegance gets started early on Monday, June 24th on the beautiful fairways of the Grand Traverse Resort. The Mobil TSD Rally on Tuesday June 25th takes us in and around the beautiful vineyards, orchards, forests and dunes of the area in a rally that’s sure to be remembered. The Michelin Autocross is on Wednesday and Thursday, June 26 and 27 at the nearby Antrim County Airport. The Technical/Historical Quiz will be presented to those who dare on the morning of Friday, June 28.

Porsche Parade 2013: Traverse City, MI. PCA National

As we say in PCA, it’s not just the cars, it’s the food! We host five banquets during the week at the resort. We also have two “open” nights for you to sample the local fare of Traverse City. Other activities include an Art Show, Goodie Store, a 5K run/walk, a Gimmick Rally, an RC contest, and our local Tourmeister has assembled several driving and van/motor coach tours around the Grand Traverse Bay area of Upper Michigan. We end the week with a true Parade of Porsches through the east side of Traverse City and up Old Mission Peninsula. The Parade Tech Academy will be held Friday, June 28th, and once again, we have an exciting mix of our outstanding PCA Technical Committee and outside speakers. Everyone signing up for Parade must pay an entrant fee of $159, which covers the entrant and co-entrant. Additional fees apply for competitive events, banquet tickets and selected other activities. If you have questions regarding Parade, please consult the Parade website at parade2013.pca.org. If you are unable to find your answer there, e-mail Kathleen Behrens, Parade Registrar at [email protected] or call 503.579.3423 (please leave a message).
