    Where dOes The OkTOberfesT happen?

    Munich, June 2012

As I write this, it is a sunny Sunday morning in June. Spring has come early toMunich this year, permitting the rst ew relaxed days in the beergarden as early asMarch. And now the next Oktoberest is not even our months away! Hoorah!

I everything goes well, the Fest will be opened at noon on September 22, 2012, byChristian Ude, Lord Mayor o Munich. He will yell Ozapt is! (It is open!) to thepeople in the Schottenhamel tent. Then the beer star ts fowing or 16 days in a row.

This year, or the rst time, I have prepared this little booklet or you, the visitors othe Oktoberest, to help you getting ready or the Fest. It will give you the hands-onno-rills answers to the most requently asked questions, and introduce you to thesecrets o the original Bavarian Tracht. It will also list the most important Oktober-est songs.

Ater all, the Oktoberest is a lot o un, and it can be even more un when you knowhow to deal with those 16 days o utter madness.

    Cheers,

P.S.: I you have any questions or comments, please eel ree to contact me directlyat [email protected] I promise to answer any serious question to the best o myknowledge.

P.P.S.: I you have a printed version o this booklet, you can still conveniently accessall the links mentioned by visiting the page www.oktoberest-insider.com/linkswhere you will nd all the links.

The Theresienwiese during Oktoberest: You see the street with the beer tents onthe let-hand side, and the street with the un r ides on the right-hand side.

    Mark ZanzigEditorOktoberest-Insider.com

The Oktoberest takes place in Munich, Germany, on the amous Theresien-wiese, which is also called Festwiese by the locals. The big tents are erectedduring the summer. The construction starts in June and takes about three months tobe completed, just in time or the opening ceremony o the Fest. I you want to seean overview o the big tents, please take a look at the maps on pages 44 and 45.

You will nd that the Theresienwiese is not a closed-o area. Basically it can beaccessed rom anywhere. But it is not practical to access it rom anywhere, be-cause there are greens and gentle hills, especially at the western side o the est!(See also question 9 on page 11 on how to get there.)

Next page: A long exposure photo o the Frisbee unride at night.

Expected visitor trac or the Oktoberest 2012. Saturdays are known to be verycrowded. Sundays and bank holidays also attract more visitors than usual.

The Oktoberest begins in September and ends in October (hence the name) onthe rst Sunday in October, or on October 3, whatever is later. It lasts or at least 16days.

So, in good years the Fest will be extended to catch the 3rd October the Day oGerman Unity, a bank holiday on a Monday or Tuesday. This will happen in 2016again (hoorah!).

    The next dates are:

    2012: September 22 October 7

    2013: September 21 October 6 2014: September 20 October 5 2015: September 19 October 4

From recent years we can predict the visitor trac or 2012. This year, the day oGerman Unity takes place in the middle o the second week, so additional visitorsare to be expected around this day. The chart below may help you to make yourdecision when to visit the est.

No. You may enter the estival and the beer tents ree o charge. Sitting down at atable in a tent is ree as well. However, please be prepared to pay or everythingyou are going to consume drinks, ood, souvenirs, and so on.

An exception is the Historical Wiesn, which shows how Oktoberest was celebra-ted in the old times. To access this special area, you have to pay a small ee.

Please note that they usually do accept only cash in the tents, except when youhave vouchers or ood and drinks (see also page 22), or when you have a specialarrangement with the tent.

No. When you are in a tent, please purchase your drinks and ood rom the tent. Then again, it is unlikely that anyone is going to say something about the hal-emptybottle o water or the small smelly sandwich that you have been carrying around allday in the city. But i you intend to drink or eat your own stu within the tent, keep aneye on the waitresses, waiters, and security guys: Ocially it is not allowed!

A typical evening or one person in 2011 was roughly 38 Euro:

    2 beers, or similar drinks @ 9.50 Euro 19.00 Euro1 chicken, or similar ood @ 10.00 Euro 10.00 Euro1 Brezn, or similar ood @ 4.20 Euro 4.20 Euro2 trips on public transport @ 2.30 Euro 4.60 EuroTotal 37.80 Euro

So I suggest to bring at least 40 Euro cash per person per night in 2012, plus theees or the unrides and souvenirs. Who said that the Oktoberest is cheap? ;-)

26,570 seats (about 27% oall seats) are outside o thetents. These can not be usedon rainy and cold days, soeveryone heads or the tents.

The chart is valid just or ne weather (i.e. dry and warm). About one quarter othe seats are made available in the beer gardens, thus any bad weather (rain, lowtemperatures) will impact the availability o ree seats, usually so much that mosttents will be closed early or admission, even on days marked green above. Pleasenote that on days marked red, the Fest will be so crowded that it will be dicult toget a seat even during the noon sessions.

Oktoberest is the busiest t ime or hotels in Munich, so it is a good idea to inquirelong beore the Fest, ideally as soon as you know your trip dates. Be prepared tosee higher prices than usual, and dont be surprised to be asked to pay your roomin advance. Hotels have no problems to sell o their rooms or Oktoberest, so theycan aord to demand pre-payment (and so they do).

In our experience the hotel situation really tightens up during August. All o a sud-den, hotels report very ew ree rooms, i any, even during the weekdays, and theprices tend to increase the closer the Fest actually gets.

As or the area, Id suggest to go or a hotel that is close to main central station(Hauptbahnho). This allows you to conveniently walk to the estival and back

that is, i you can still walk! The city and the region can be easily explored romhere by train. Also, trains to and rom the airport stop here.

Most online hotel services oer a good selection o hotels in Munich, alsoclose to the main central station. Many list the available rooms in real-time,

which is very handy when you are planning your trip.

Here is a selection o popular hotels within walking distance to the est:

    Best Western Atrium Hotel

    Softel Mnchen Bayerpost

    InterCityHotel Mnchen

    Eden Hotel Wol

    Vi Vadi Hotel

    Eurostars Grand Central

    Kings Hotel First Class

Four Points by Sheraton Mnchen Central

    Hotel Regent

    Best Western Hotel Cristal

    Helvetia Hotel Munich City Center

And here are some o the nest hotels in Munich:

    Bayerischer Ho

    Rocco Forte The Charles Hotel

    Hotel Knigsho

Links to these hotels can be ound atwww.oktoberest-insider.com/links

Munich has a big airport with plenty o direct connections to destinations across

the world. It is well connected to the town center by public train or airport busshuttle, so Id book a fight to Munich (MUC). When you can nd a direct fight, its certainly more convenient than a connecting fight via Frankurt (FRA), but thatprobably depends on your budget, and the available fights. (I think it does not re-ally make sense to book a fight to FRA and then go by train to Munich.)

As you can imagine, you can just about orget to park/stay anywhere in the immedi-ate surroundings o the Theresienwiese.

But or the Fest there will be two special areas where you can stay withmotor homes and caravans. These would be your rst choice.

    Messe Riem

Next to the Riem airgrounds, you have a ully equipped camping lot or about1,000 motor homes. You get there via motorway A99 until crossing Munich-East(Kreuz Mnchen-Ost) and then on the A94 to exit Feldkirchen West. When youapproach Munich, just ollow the signs or airgrounds Messe/ICM. Using thesubway you get easily to the est. The ride will take 20-30 minutes. To check oravailability, please call (089) 94 92 89 44.

    Siegenburger Strasse

This area provides space or about 250 motor homes. It is close to the Fest, so youcan take a taxi or even walk rom there (i possible). To check or availability, pleasecall (089) 547 06 70.

Next page: The Hacker-Pschorr tent eatures a stunning cloud decoration.

Bring your kids. The locals bring even their small children (all dressed up in niceTrachtn) to the est to enjoy an exciting aternoon at the est. For younger kids, the un rides are the real attraction and certainly more entertaining than the beerdrinking.

For obvious reasons, young kids or teenagers stay rarely in the evening. However,i they are 16 years or older, there is no problem at all. However, the German lawprohibits to serve strong alcohol to them beer is OK.

Rules and regulations or all ages

Obviously, you should go at least once. (I you come to Munich during Oktoberestbut dont visit the estival well, thats a bit dumb, right?) But how many visits canone endure? Three, ve, ten? Lets see...

Its a good Munich tradition to go at least three times to the est once with youramily, once with your riends, and once with your colleagues. At least, this was trueuntil companies decided that they wont pay or the visit to the estival any more.Consequently, many people dont go to the est with their colleagues any longer.(Tells you something about your colleagues, right?)

For visitors, my recommendation is to aim or two, maybe three visits, ideally dis-tributed over a ull week. Take your time to recover! Remember that Munich and

Bavaria oer plenty o beautiul places to visit (see question 37 on page 32), so youwont get bored when not attending the est one night.

As a side note in 2008 Ive been seven times to the estival! And this was clearlytoo oten. At some point you just dont like the songs any longer, you dont like thehard benches any longer, and you may not even like the beer any longer. (In theollowing years, I went just three times each year, and it was much better!)

eBay is probably the best place to look or second hand Lederhosn (leathertrousers) i you are still at home. When you are already in Munich, you will nd

several (outlet) stores selling Trachten (i.e. Lederhosen, Dirndl, and so on). Theseare new, but you probably will be happy with these, too, as a used Tracht is not somuch cheaper than a new one. So why not go with a new one? See our guide tobuying your new tracht on pages 3437.

All the tents have their own mood, so they are all unique in a way. You should try tosee them all. But the Oktoberest is quite popular with locals and tourists, so thereal question is Where do I get a seat?

Especially on weekends, the Fest really is crowded, and you can consider yoursellucky to get a seat without reservation. On rainy or cold days it is even worse. So iyou get a seat, we suggest to stay in that tent or as long as possible. Chances arehigh that you wont get into other tents, or i you do, you wont get any seats.

Typically the people spread across the tents evenly, so you can take your currenttent as indicator or the other tents. I there is still a lot o spare room in your tent, the other tents will have room, too. And vice versa.

Now, i you have a choice, I recommend theHacker-Pschorrtent, the Schtzenest-halle, the Ochsenbraterei and the Schottenhamel. But these are just my personalavorites.

In the end, the best tent is the tent where you get in, get a table, and have a niceand peaceul day and evening.

    This is the Million-Dollar-question!

The good news: I you are just a small group, two or three people, you probablydo not need a reservation at all. Just try to get into a tent, then wait patiently untilpeople get up and leave. This is dicult, I know. Then snatch that space. Try to nothit the other people trying to do the same. :-)

The bad news: Even i you wanted to get an ocial reservation, it would be next toimpossible to get one. Some tents start to give out reservations as early as Febru-ary every year, and they are typically serving the German/Munich companies andgroups rst. You always can inquire with the tents directly (which we recommend),but do not have too high hopes. In case you want to try your luck, we have put

together a page with the contact inormation or each o the big tents.By the way, i you are staying in one o the premium hotels (ve stars), it is a goodidea to inquire or a table with their reservation department or guest relations. Usu-ally these hotels do have tables reserved or their guests. While you will be chargedor ood and drinks, you at least do have a reservation!

Now, i you are really desperate, you will nd people and companies who re-selltables and reservations through eBay. Be warned: oten these are dramatically over-priced and inocial. So you might be denied access to the tent i you receivedyour reservation through a shady company.

Shady or not, you should never pay (much) more than two beers and one chickenper person. Using current prices, this would be around 30 Euro per person, includ-ing the ood and drink vouchers. Always remember: there is NO entry ee or theest, and there is NO reservation ee! I someone tries to charge you more than twobeer and a chicken, Id denitely recommend to stay away rom the oer, un-less they can tell you exactly why they are so expensive. For example, one reasonmay be that there is more or better ood included, or more beer vouchers. But

you should not pay, say, 100 Euros per person with just one beer and one chickenincluded. (I know, I know. It is tempting to go or this when you are rom overseasand this is your only visit to the Fest in your lie, but still: rather spend the money attheHobruhaus in the town center than give it to scammers.)

Each tent has its own reservation policy (see previous question). Some tents beginas early as January, others begin only in May. You have to get on their waiting list, and then keep ngers crossed.

You see, the tents serve their existing customers rst, i.e. those who attended in theprevious year. And then, i tables are let over, these will be lled rom the wai-ting list. This procedure is basically the same or all the tents.

It is a good idea to inquire with ALL tents and just see what happens. At the end,you have to ork over the money beorehand, or you wont get the reservation, theaccess cards (i necessary) and the beer and ood vouchers. So no harm is doneto anyone i you get preliminary reservation conrmations rom more than one tent(but dont pay them). Always remember: Only your timely payment will nalize therespective reservations.

Tents will be closed whenever too many guests are inside the tent. Then the doorswill be shut, signs will be put up, and a security person controls the door. Atera while, once guests have let the tent, the tent will be re-opened. This is yourchance to get in.

Sometimes you will nd a tent closed during the day (Wegen berllung vor-bergehend geschlossen!) because its already too ull. This happens requentlyduring weekends and public holidays, and on cold or rainy days. In this case youwill either need a reservation, or a good portion o luck. I you have a reservation(or you know someone who has), then go to the entrance or reservations o therespective tent. This is usually somewhere in the back o the tent. In ormer times itwas sucient to just say the name o the person with the reservation, but these daysyou usually need an ocial entrance ticket (tent pass) to get into the tent. I yourcontact is already in, you can try to call him to check whether he can get you in. Butwithout an ocial booking it remains tough.

By the way, you can avoid closed tents by coming early to the estival. I you comein the morning (on weekends), or in the early aternoon (on weekdays), you shouldbe able to get in without problems. Its a good idea to look or tables that do nothave a reservation, so you can stay all day long to the very end.

On weekdays (Monday to Friday) it is no problem at all getting into the morning/noon sessions, except or bank holidays. But typically, the activity begins in theaternoon, starting around 3 pm. So you may get in in the morning, you may get atable in the morning, you may get drunk in the morning, but will it be un?

Even i you may easily get a table during the day, the table is likely to be reservedor the evening session which begins between 4 pm and 6 pm. It is very unlikelythat you can stay at that table or the rest o the day. One option is to ask the wait-resses upon entering specially or the tables that are not reserved. At these tables,

you can stay as long as you wish. Each tent is required to have them, but there arevery ew, and these are the rst ones to ll up.

On weekends it is very dicult to get in at all, let alone to nd space that is ree ornot reserved. Typically they let in only olks with reservations, so you can imaginethat there will be problems, especially i you arrive in larger groups, say ve peopleor more. Having said that, its not impossible to get in, but it is unlikely. It dependson many actors to get in (weather, sta mood, luck). And once in the tent, it de-pends on YOU to nd a place that is not reserved. But honestly more than ourpeople on a Saturday without reservation is next to impossible.

It depends. Ocially you are not allowed to bring more people than you havereservations or. For the evening sessions and the weekend sessions, the tents handout wrist bands or access cards that indicate the day and the session o your reser-vation. For 10 people they hand out 10 wrist bands or access cards. Typically, they

only let in people with the wris t bands or access cards, no matter what. So anyoneunable to present a wrist band or access card will have a hard time waiting at theentrance while you already enjoy your rst ew beers.

On weekdays, however, it is usually not that dicult, especially when the tentsare still open (i.e. when the weather is good). Then the additional olks can justenter the tent through the main entrance, nd your table and join the un. Unless itis totally packed, they will nd some space to order their beer and ood. As seatsaround you become available, try to occupy them. (But do not try to deend themi people with a valid reservation show up. This might get you into trouble.)

Noon sessions during weekdays are peaceul, and you will easily nd a table. Onweekends and bank holidays the tents will be crowded right rom the beginning.

Reserved tables are marked with big signs indicating the name o the reservation, the size o the group, and the date and time when the reservation begins. Usually, reservations are void 30 minutes ater the reservation time.

Yes. They put up signs saying Reservierung or Reserviert at the end o eachtable, along with the time, name, and number o people or that reservation. Usuallythe reservation is void i the announced number o people have not shown up 30minutes ater the reservation time, but this depends on tent policies and the moodo the sta. I really noone shows up, you can occupy the space and start the un.Should the group appear later, they ocially have no rights to claim that space. Thewaitresses will usually be on your side (as you were generating revenue and theother guys did not), but we think that a peaceul co-existence should be possible,so i there is room, let them sneak in, have a beer and a nice chat.

A polite question in German is always welcome and can be a good ice-breaker(especially with the Germans), but a polite question in English is also OK. Thekeyword is polite here. I you are rude or appear to be too drunk, you will almostalways get a no as reply. Also, please do accept a no as there is really no pointin arguing whether there is space let at a table or not.

And here is what you might say in German: Entschuldigung, ist hier wohl noch einPlatz rei ur mich und meine Freunde? (Excuse me, but is there room or me andmy riends here?)

No. Each tent has its own character and caters to a dierent crowd, but they are allmore or less riendly. You might nd that the smaller tents are more riendly though,

as there is less trac, less noise, less stress and less drunkyards.

Tricky. I youve got reservations and vouchers, the tip is sometimes included. Inthis case you do not need to give extra tip, or just i you think the service was extra-ordinary. I tip isnot included, the waitress will tell you what the tip is. In act, its notreally a tip its more like a service ee. It should be not more than 10 to 15% othe beer or ood price. And yes, giving a bit o extra tip will ensure that the waitresswill always serve you in time and in quality. :-)

Yes, the 3rd October is a bank holiday every year (its the day o German unity), andall the weekend rules do apply. Even more so when the 3rd October is a Friday, attracting additional tourists to the town or the long weekend.

Sometimes the 3rd October is the last day o Oktoberest. The Fest is then extend-ed to Monday or Tuesday, eectively adding one or two days to the Fest. In thoseyears, the Fest sees more visitors during the day o the 3rd October. But it is the lastday, and the people will leave rather early. Thus, its typically not a problem to getseats in the late aternoon and evening. Then again, its not that much un, becauseall the waitresses and waiters are really exhausted and just want the Fest to be over.

Oktoberest voucher or grilled chicken with tip included

The tent owners typically give out reservations or tables and seats only in ex-change or guaranteed minimum consumption. The typical minimum per person istwo beers and one grilled chicken, with a minimum o ten people sharing the table. In other words: in order to get a reservation, you will need to buy at least 20 beersand 10 chicken, a value o about 300 Euro.

Now, the tent owners sell the beers and oodin advance, i.e. when the table is be-ing reserved. This ensures that the reservation party will show up. (And should thegroup not show up, heck, the tent owner has sold the beer already. :-)

In exchange or your money you will receive (nice looking) vouchers or ood andbeer. Each tent has its own vouchers, and the design varies slightly every year.

In the tent, you order your beer or ood, and you hand over the vouchers to the

waitress. For ood orders you sometimes have to hand over the voucher rst (thisdepends on the waitress). For beer orders you always hand over the vouchers upondelivery. In some tents the tip is already included in the voucher. Then you have anextra coupon or the tip, jus t like the photo above. In this case, you do not need topay additional tip (but its nice i you do it anyway). I the tip is not included in thevoucher, you will have to tip the waitress with cash, even i you have a voucher orthe beer or ood.

The vouchers are valid throughout the Oktoberest in the respective tent. Pleasenote that they do not qualiy as entry pass, though. I you happen to stay a ewmore days in Munich, you can pay in the tent owners restaurant using some othe vouchers or a limited time typically until the end o October. Youll need toenquire with the tent to get the ull details.

    Lets see.

    1. Most importantly, dont be rude, especially not to the girls. This can get youaster out o a tent than you can say hey!. So, you should know your limits and(try to) not drink too much.

    2. Be early at the est, ideally beore 4 pm, to catch a nice place.

    3. I you have a ormal reservation, be sharply on time. I you come too late, yourseats are likely to be occupied.

    4. Do not dance on the tables. Never ever. This is a hard rule. You may dance onthe benches or as long as you wish, but do not step on the tables. This might

get you removed rom the tent really ast. For tables located in the rst foor, there may be restrictions to prevent people rom alling over the balcony.

    5. Do not take a beerstein or glass withyou (or anything else that does not be-long to you). They are checking bagswhen you leave. I they nd a glass,it is legally speaking thet. Shouldthis happen to you, do not make auss about it. Usually, they just take thebeerstein and let you go, but nothingcan stop them rom calling the police. To avoid any o this, just do not take abeerstein!

    6. Do not smoke inside the tents. Smo-king inside the tents is not permitted. Each tent has outside smoking areas.

    7. Do not wear silly Oktoberest hats. Youwill really look like a tourist.

Do not wear (supposedly) unny Oktober-est hats! They will really make you standout in the crowd as a real tourist whoknows nothing about the Oktoberest.

Traditional Steckerl Fisch (Fish on a stick) at Fischer Vroni.

Meeting your riends in a tent with 7,000 people can be surprisingly dicult: It is re-ally loud! You hardly can understand a word on the mobile phone, so calling is outo question. You better text message each other.

Good orientation points are the band and the main entrance. By describing youractual position in relation to these points, your riends should be able to nd you.You can always ask your waitress or the ocial name o the table and share thisinormation. At the main entrance, there is a tent plan where anyone can lookup aspecic table.

And then there is the problem o getting a table. A group o people without reserva-tion has problems getting in and nding a table. Its not impossible though, espe-

cially when your riends show up over time and the size o your group incrementallygrows. In this case you occupy the table as more guests leave the est. :-)

Local broadcaster TV Mnchenhas the most complete coverage: a live show inGerman every night rom 6 pm to 9 pm. You might as well try Bavarian state broad-caster Bayerischer Rundunk. They run a summary every night. I you want towatch rom abroad, you will want to check whether you can watch the live eeds otheir programs on the Web.

All the beers are ne, depending on your taste. However, theres that old joke...

Ater work, all the brew masters rom the Munich

breweries sit together in a pub. Needless to say,

each brewer orders beer rom his own brand, i.e.

the Lwenbru guy orders Lwenbru, the Hacker-

Pschorr guy orders a Hacker, and so on. Last one to go

is the Augustiner guy. He orders a Coke. Everybody is

stunned, asking Why? Well, he nally says with

a wide grin, i you are not ordering any beers, then I

    wont, too.

You have a good choice o dishes. A must-try is the classic Wiesn-Hendl (grilledchicken), best enjoyed with French Fries. As they are really resh, they denitelyare delicious. The tent owners also have restaurants in or around Munich, and theyserve traditional Bavarian ood there. So they do have the experience, and therereally is no dierence in quality between the various tents. All tents, even the small

ones, have a high volume, so you wont have any bad surprises. You might want to try the ox at the Ochsenbraterei (also oered as Ox Burger). Iyou are looking or traditional Bavarian cuisine, theArmbrustschtzen tent and theFischer-Vroni are the best places to go. Having said that, we really think that all thetents are serving good and resh ood.

All the tents have English menus, so eel ree to ask your waitress or it.

Relaxing ater the rst ew beers

Certainly you should try to not drink too much. But how much is too much? Well,Id say that up to two Mass beers (two liters) are OK. This can typically be handledby normal olks without any serious problems. With three Mass (three liters) youwill quickly approach the borderline. You will probably not eel well the next morn-ing, and i you are not used to these quantities, your day may be a mess. Four ormore Mass beers, and getting home (or in act, getting anywhere) may becomedicult. And the next day will denitely be a mess.

There is one hard rule to avoid major complications: Do not drink Schnaps(shots). Whatever they tell you. However they try to convince you. Just dont do it!Schnaps may send you to the foor within short time, and there is really nothing youcan do about it. I you jus t stick to beer, you probably will be ne (sort o). Yep, Idsay this is really the most important rule o all: No Schnaps!

By the way, there are always olks boasting that they drank ten Mass on a singlenight at the Fest. All o these stories turn out to be pure antasy. In some rare cases, the olks telling you such a errytale may indeed have drunk such unbelievableamounts, but most o it was non-alcoholic beer. You see, i the mood is right and thebeer is fowing, some waitresses silently switch to non-alcoholic beers. Just believeus: Nobody can drink ten liters o beer and walk home. Nobody!

This will not be a problem.

The language sections o the travel guidebook usually contains the German trans-lations or the most impor tant phrases anyway. And lets ace it you dont wantto discuss the history o German literature with the waitress. You want her to bringsome tasty ood, and some beer. :-) Most tents also have English menus, so ask orthem i you are not comortable ordering in German.

By the way, when compiling our list o the most popular Oktoberest songs (seepage 41) we ound out that about two thirds o the songs are German, and onethird is English. So you will be able to sing and dance and have un, even withoutknowing a single word o German!

Anyway, here are the some important phrases:

Excuse me, how do I get to the Oktoberest?Entschuldigung, wie komme ich zum Oktoberest?

Excuse me, is there space or the (two, three, our, ve) o us at your table?Entschuldigung, htten sie wohl Platz r uns (zwei, drei, vier, un)?

(One, two, three, our, ve) chicken, please!(Ein, zwei, drei, vier, un) Wiesn-Hendl, bitte!

There are enough acilities, sort o. But in a tent with thousands o people drinkingthousands o liters o beer, there also is a clear need or the acilities! When the ac-tion has been going on or a while, say at six p.m. during the week, and at two p.m.on weekends, people start to use the washrooms. Depending on your location inthe tent, it can take 3 to 5 minutes to get to the washrooms. And there you will nd aqueue.

For men, this usually means a wait between 5 and 10 minutes in the line.

For women, this usually means a wait between 10 and 20 minutes (!) in the line. Ithats the case, you sometimes see women who really can not hold it any longerrushing to the mens washrooms, or bypassing the entire line o waiting women.

Rarely in ull agreement with the other women, I should add. ;-) The bathrooms arevery sae, so you do not need anyone to join you to protect you. Please rememberthat your group should never completely leave your table! Any empty table will betaken by new guests in no time!

Yes, there are situations where you do not want to get drunk, e.g. with your custom-ers. Its indeed a genuine dilemma: I you do drink the beer like your customers do,you will get seriously drunk and may do or say things you may bitterly regret later.Ater all, your guests are still your customers. Not good. On the other hand, you gothere specically or the beer. So i you do not drink beer (or not much) you will belabeled as spoil-sport, sissy, or Mr. Boring. Not good either.

Heres the solution: As you are going to pay or all the beers and the ood, you grabyour waitress at the very beginning, when you occupy the table. You take her to one

o the main aisles and explain your rules or the evening:

Look, these are my customers. I cant get drunk in ront o them. So,

whatever I say or do, you will get me a beer without alcohol. Even

when I order a round o ve beers or all o us, you will bring our

normal beers and one non-alcoholic beer or me. I am going to pay

or all o us, and dont worry you will get plenty o tip.

Its a win-win situation or all o you. The waitress knows that she has just one con-tact person. She knows that she will get additional tip rom you, and knows that youwill keep an eye on your group which means less trouble or her. Your customersget drunk and believe youre getting drunk as well. And you can drink as much asyou want while keeping all your senses (and have no headache the next day).

The only drawback: It is quite depressing to see the olks around you getting com-ortably drunk while you have to stay sober. So try to keep smiling and try to haveun! Always think about the benets or your business. :-)

First, you do not need a reservation, because as a single person you are muchmore fexible than groups are. Should you encounter a closed tent, you just waita couple o minutes and sneak in once the tent is open again. Even in ront o aclosed tent, a single woman (who is not drunk yet!) can always tell the security guythat her colleagues are inside, and ask politely whether he could make an excep-tion or you, just once, just this time. Be sober and riendly, you know the drill. Hemight actually let you in. :-)

Meeting new people is not a problem. As a woman you will have to actually endo the guys. Pick one o the tables where the guys are not too drunk, with plenty onormal people around (amilies, business guys, younger olks). It is not a good ideato inquire at a large table with just (drunk) males. They certainly will nd a placeor you, no doubt about that, but will you have a un time ater a ew beers? Anyway,

You can avoid getting drunk in ront o your customers by making a smart dealwith your waitress.

visitors to the est come rom everywhere in theworld, with lots o English speakers around. So you have a good chance to meet someone. And the locals like a nice chat, too.

I getting a seat is a problem in a packed tent, just ask the waitress politely or a place. Shewill almost always be able to assign a seat oryou. You will want to avoid the darker cornerso a tent. While you should not eel unsecurethere (security sta is omnipresent), youwill just experience hal o the action (band, people, etc.). A good place is somewherein the middle o the tent, not too close to theband, but not too ar away either.

When asking or a seat at a table as a singlewoman, it is always a good idea to stay closeto the aisle until you are more comortablewith the situation. That will make it easier toget away should the need arise (i.e. when theguys cant behave). Alternatively, try to sit next

to another woman in the group. The mood on a table can change quickly! Its justa matter o another round o beer. In such situations just grab your purse and beerand leave the table. It is not unsae at the estival, but s itting at a table among abunch o drunk guys is not genuine un either.

For a single woman, I do not think that all the tents are equally suitable. Id avoidthe Weinzelt (wine tent) which as the name suggests is not a beer tent. A lot oolder olks can be ound here, so its not that much un anyway. TheKertent is theplace where the German celebreties hang around, but its quite hard to get in, andit is not your typical beer tent either. Gay people tend to like theBrurosl.

Please consider buying a conservative (long)Dirndl, the traditional emale dress oBavaria (see tips on what to wear to Oktoberest on page 37). It looks good and willlet you mingle more easily with the locals.

Beer Serving Hours are 10 am to 10:30 pm on weekdays, and 9 am to 10:30 pm onSaturdays, Sundays and holidays. Just on the opening Saturday they will start beerserving at noon.

At 10:30 pm the band will stop playing, the lights will go on, and the waitresses willstart to clean the tables around you. Typically you will have let by 10:50 pm. Theonly exception to this is the Ker tent which closes at 1 am (last orders at 12:15 am).

Once the big tents close, everybody heads to theKertent rst. They are allo-wed to open longer in the night. As you can imagine, the whole est rushes there,so chances are close to n il to get in. You might be better o trying an hour beoreclosing time, but do you really want to give up the table you have or the chance ogetting into theKer?

But dont worry there are many alternatives in the city:

P1 Certainly one o the best Ater-Wiesn parties in the city, but extremelydicult to get in. Their doormen are known to be very selective. (No snea-kers, Tracht is OK.)

Lenbach My wies avorite place to go with customers ater the Fest. Youcan reserve tables in advance, but do not expect a lot o comor t: It is really, really packed. I you do not have a reservation, it is not as dicult to get in asthe P1.

Here we go. Thats me with my Tracht, consisting o:

Checkered Shirt (plain white is also OK) Leather trousers (with suspenders, without is also OK) O-white Slouch socks (pulled down!) Haerl Shoes (black!) No scar (even i they sell it to you!)

Actually, there is very little you can do wrong. However, i you are opting ormedium length leather trousers, there should be enough leather to ul ly cover theknees when sitting. Otherwise the trousers are considered too short, and you maybecome the laughing stock at the Oktoberest.

A word about the price or a Tracht. The Munich dealers oer complete sets, con-taining the items above (including the dreaded scar). These usually are 199 Eurosincluding taxes. I you want more robust leather trousers, we recommend to havea look at the more expensive ones. You will still receive a discount on the list pricewhen you are buying a complete set. For example, the regular price or my com-bination was 367.90 Euro, but I negotiated or a 35% discount and paid just 239.60Euro.

In any case, please rest assured that when you buy your Tracht in Munich, the salesladies at the stores will help you with the selection o the right items.

And this is Petra showing o one o her many Trachts, consisting o:

Short-sleeved white blouse Traditional dress (the Dirndl) Pinaore Sheer pantyhose Elegant low-heeled loaers

You should be aware o a ew rules or the emale dress:

    1. The knot o the pinaore indicates the status o the woman. Bound on her rightside (just as Petra on the let) means: "I'm Taken". Bound on her let side me-ans: "I'm single and/or available". Cool, eh?

    2. The traditional Dirndl is long and alls down to below mid-cal, just as in thephoto above. They will sell you a shor t Dirndl as well, and as a male I agreethat it looks quite appealing, but this is a tourist item and has nothing to do withthe traditional dress.

    3. The pinaore should end at the same height as the Dirndl itsel. Having a shor-ter or longer pinaore will denitely indicate that you are not one o the locals. Abig no-no. (Petra's pinaore has the correct length, but the camera angle makesit appear to be slightly longer than the Dirndl. It is not.)

    4. The pantyhose should be just a sheer one, maybe tanned, but denitely notblack or weirdly colored.

    5. The shoes should really be low heeled loaers or ballet fats, black or white.High-heeled pumps might be a beautiul sight and a nice surprise or your hus-band, but it's not something you wear as part o a traditional Oktoberest dress.

    6. Some dresses allow you to thread thin silver chains through the ront section.I you have one o these you should denitely wear the silver chains, otherwisethe empty hooks will look just plain weird.

Other than that, it's pretty simple, really. The sales ladies at the stores in Munichwill help you with the selection o the right items anyway.

The original Oktoberest in Munich is home to a very special music-mix, that is per-ormed by proessional olk-bands. The mix consists mostly o super-hits, roughly2/3 o these being German, and 1/3 English. So, yes, there is a good chance thatyou will be able to sing at the Fest, too!

Some o the German songs are typical drinking-songs that noone would liketo hear outside an Oktoberest tent, but still they all are widely known and quitepopular!

One speciality to the est is that every year one new song pops up that has emer-ged rom the summer season. This song quickly captures the audience, and

everyone demands this song to beplayed. (In 2009, or example, itwas 10 Meter geh by Chris Bo-ettcher.) This is then the WiesnHit o that year. Needless to say, that song nds its way into thesongbooks o the coming years aswell, probably or years to stay.

right: There are basically three ways to get to the Theresienwiese by public trans-

port. We recommend to use the suburban train (S-Bahn) and exit at the Hacker-

brcke station. You can easily ollow the masses walking to the main entry o the

Fest. It takes about 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can use the underground system

and take the U4 or U5. Both lines stop at the Theresienwiese station. However,

please be prepared to nd yoursel in a big crowd o people who all want to exit

the station here it can easily take 10 minutes to get rom the station to the sur-

ace! Or, you can use the U3 or U6 and exit either at Goetheplatz or Poccistrae.
