LENTEN REGULATIONS (from February 26, Ash Wednesday,
to the Paschal Triduum)
ABSTINENCE from meat is to be observed by all
Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash
Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent.
FASTING is to be observed on Ash
Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years
of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound
by this may take only one full meal. Two
smaller meals are permitted if necessary to
maintain strength according to one‘s needs,
but eating solid foods between meals is not
permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well
as abstinence, are prescribed for Good
Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.
Those who are excused from fast and
abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including
individuals suffering from chronic illnesses
such as diabetes. Also excluded are
pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and
individuals who are ill should not
jeopardize their health further by fasting.
The Lyric Opera Stage will be presenting a benefit concert for the Australian Bushfire Relief on March 3rd at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Second Presbyterian Church of Chicago. This concert will feature members of the Lyric Opera Chorus, Michael Black (Lyric Opera Cho-
rus Master) and Noah Lindquist (Pianist). Donations of any amount at the door or advance donations can be made through fundraise.redcross.org.au. All proceeds will benefit the Australian Red Cross. For more information, please con-tact the church office at [email protected].

The Share and Prayer Lanes of Lent
Only 3 days until the start of the Great Lent Race. Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday. Last week I began to talk about the three lanes of Lent, beginning with the Fast Lane. In some respects, the fasting lane is the most objective to control. Our choices for food, for when to eat, for how much to eat and who to eat with, while they may seem difficult, are in truth made up by regular choices and decisions. So while Lent may invite us to reflect on how we approach food, it is still our choice. The other two lanes help us both get into and out of the fast lane. The Prayer Lane (or Pray Lane if you prefer), is also about choice – how much, when, with whom and how is God already part of my life, and what is my relationship with God, the saints and all who inspire me. Key to the prayer lane is making time to be with God. Making time with God (like making time with anyone else) involves listening and talking. Prayer is never only about saying prayers, it is about the one who hears them. And prayer is always a conversation – God always hears up, but do we listen to God. In the prayer lane, we gain perspective on our very selves, the people, world and universe around us as we connect with the creator of all things. And the prayer lane is mostly not what we think it is. Over the years I’ve encountered people who dance their prayer, sing their prayer, draw and paint their prayer, write their prayer, cook their prayer, and so forth. BUT, we don’t just do things and tack a prayer on, we have to be intentional about entering in with a spirit of praying, and open our hearts to God as we do what we do. But, again, that may be a bit focused on what we do. We can also do various activities that we like, or are difficult, or we feel we accomplish with pride, and looking back see that God has been at work there. Again, just as prayer is always conversation, looking back to see what God has accomplished in or through us, is like the listening side of prayer. Another part of the prayer lane – silence. If we find listening hard, we find silence harder. To be before God: who is hearing us pour out our heart without us saying a word, or to be before God: who is pouring out His love into our heart without us hearing a sound, is the supreme act of faith. Because when our hearts really connect with God, it is evident to others, we ourselves are (to ourselves) imperceptibly changed but we begin to live with new vision. So the prayer lane gives us insight to negotiate the fast lane even as we navigate the pray, an ultimately connects with the share lane as well. The Share Lane – what most know as almsgiving – is when God’s touching our heart takes us to action. An “alm” what most know as alms, or alma (as in mater), means love, loving, or charity. It is a gift of love we are inspired to help either someone in need, or a simple desire to show love. The share lane is a confidence builder because it recognizes we have something to give. The more we are in the prayer lane, the more we know this is true. We have been given so much. The Share Lane – knowing that all of us humans are connected one to another (circle of human life) – is realizing the commonality of being human, and living in a world with a vast array of others of every type, shape, color, sensibility, temperament and personality. A canvas would just be a white muslin cloth without an addition of paint, chalk, pencil or other media. But when things begin to come together, a piece of art is created. The human family is God’s artwork. Not only are we given much to share, we ALL have so much we need. The share lane gives us the opportunity to look around at what is around us, what is within us, and what we can do by coming together. As we head down our roadway this Lent – think about how God impacts your life and how much God impacts your life by the influence of others on you and your influence on others. Feel free to jump in the different lanes: Fast, Prayer and Share. Use them separately. Use them together. Use them. There is only one destination for Lent, it is Christ. Getting to Him gets you closer to the entire mystery of God and within the mystery of God, we then better understand each other and build a better world. Blessings on your Lenten journey!

Old St. Mary’s Lifelong Faith Formation Office serves from womb to tomb; babies through the most mature disciples of our parish and beyond. The office prepares families/children for baptisms as well as develops dy-
namic opportunities to grow in faith for whole families, youth and adults. This includes fostering a lifelong journey of prayer, spiritual nourishment, increased understanding of our Catholic faith, religious education of children both in our parish school and Sunday program, as well as adolescents and adults. We are seeking parishioners to sit on the Formation Team Board which will meet once per month for 90 minutes. This is a great opportunity to be creative, to help establish a vision that will shape and guide initiatives for our parish. Enthusiasm breeds enthusiasm! We are seeking committee members who are enthusiastic about our Catholic Faith or desire to be, team members who want to share their enthusiasm, are willing to continue to grow in faith, be creative and encourage others to explore and deepen their faith. Being a part of teams, committee’s and boards is a great way to meet new people, increase your sense of belonging in a parish, and be a part of the shared mission of a parish. Please come out to learn more about the Faith Formation Board and this opportunity on Tuesday, February 25th at 6:30 p.m. in the parish center, on the 2nd floor.

We conclude Black History
month and our acknowledge-
ment of African American “firsts” with The Venerable
Father Augustus Tolton. Augustus Tolton born a slave in Ralls County Missouri, the property of Stephen Elliot and Savilla Elliot on April 1, 1854 as shown on his baptismal certificate. His father’s name was Peter Paul and he was the property of the Hager family who were Catholic. His mother’s name was Martha Jane. She was the property of the Elliot family. When Peter Paul made his interest known in Martha Jane, an agreement was reached between the slave owners, the Elliots and the Hagers. They allowed Martha Jane and Peter Paul to enter a Christian marriage. In addition, it was agreed between the two masters that Peter and Martha would live in a slave cabin on the Elliot farm, Peter would remain the slave and worker of the Hagers; while all children of the union would be the property of the Elliot family. Fr. Tolton’s father left to join the Union Army, his mother fearing slave traders looking to buy children, gathered him and his brother and sister one night and ran away heading for Quincy Illinois to flee the bonds of slavery. Once in Quincy, they attended St. Boniface Church. Martha wanted Augustus to receive an education so she enrolled him in the parish school. There was a parish uprising in the then all-white school. Augustus was taunted and tormented. In less than a month, Martha finally withdrew him from the school. Augustus formal education was very limited, a month at St. Boniface, two months at Colored Public School and three months each winter for three or four years at St. Peter School thanks to the pastor Fr. McGirr. It was discussions with Fr. McGirr that led to Fr. Tolton’s interest in becoming a priest. He applied to be a postulant in the Franciscans but was turned down. While the bishop of the diocese was willing to assume the expenses, there was no seminary in the United States that would accept him. Every response started with words like We are not ready for a Negro student. Finally in 1880, he was accepted as a seminarian at the Propaganda a seminary training priests for work in Mission countries. On Holy Saturday, 1886, he was ordained a priest. When the ship that brought him back to America arrived in New York on July 6, 1886, Augustus Toltan became the first black priest in the United States.

St. James and
Old St. Mary’s
Catholic Relief
Services Chapter
We are excited to announce that St. James Parish and Old St. Mary’s are joining efforts in forming a CRS Chapter making Chicago one of the first cities in the U.S. to lead the way in CRS’ new strategy. CRS is the official international Catholic relief and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which you may know by our Parish Lent tradition of the Rice Bowl. CRS Chapters are part of a new strategy to advance its mission to end global poverty and suffering. The goal of a chapter is to empower its volunteer members to become champions for the mission of global solidarity and lead the way to a more just and peaceful world, inspired by our Gospel call. This is done by encouraging elected officials and media in the U.S. to raise the profile of pivotal global issues such as malnutrition and forced migration. We are looking to add more volunteer members from Old St. Mary’s. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity to serve, please contact Joice Pharris ([email protected]).
