Cover design: The flags that grace Twister Circle are symbolic of more than just our love of state and country. In addition, the town of Oldenburg’s flag joins the Indi-ana State and US flags on the main pole. These are sur-rounded by flags from all the countries of origin of our many international students who have chosen to study at OA over the years. And most appropriate for this publication, these flags have all recently been replaced with new versions courtesy of two generous donations.

From the President

Oldenburg Academy is living just such an abundant life! As we reflect upon the 2014-15 school year, our hearts are overflowing with the many reasons why we are inspired, humbled, and

thankful. Over 1,500 individual donors and volunteers generously shared their time, talent and treasure to make this past year another record-

breaking one: over $540,000 in support of the Academy. Throughout this magazine,

we will highlight each of the major opportunities where alumni, parents, faculty/staff, neighbors, board members, businesses, Sisters of St. Francis and students have collaboratively made a contribution to OA’s ability to sustain and grow our mission. After reading these powerful stories, I believe you will join me in sharing the pride and optimism that the Academy has been and always will be, “So worth it”.

Overall, the Academy is fiscally strong and healthy. We ended the year in an operationally positive cash flow situation despite a challenging investment year. We were able to address a significant number of deferred maintenance items, including the upgrading of our technology infrastructure, wireless access points, and phone system, and still provide our teachers a much deserved raise. Health care and energy costs continue to rise but so does the creativity and generosity of our Board of Trustees and Advancement Office staff which facilitated another record-smashing Dinner Auction and the launch of a new “car/cash raffle”.

Our enrollment took an upward swing last year and in this current year we now have the largest enrollment since the 1990’s! Students from twenty-five different elementary schools are discovering the OA difference. Our tuition ($8200) remains in the lower third in the tri-state region and students continue to receive free admission to all plays, concerts, and games, a free yearbook, and most importantly, small, rigorous classes with the best teachers in the state! The Indiana Choice program and the funds raised through our Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) last year provided almost $250,000 in tuition assistance for 88 of our students. In addition, our named scholarships, multi-student and employee discounts, and general tuition assistance gave

an additional $176,000 in aid to 79 families. An OA education is truly within everyone’s reach!

Organizations such as the athletic boosters (OASIS) and the Alumni Association (OAAA), as well as our amazing “gently used goods” retail store, Twice Blessed, continue to be instrumental in generating funds for school facilities, student scholarships, and overall operating needs. We also find great encouragement in the support we received from local foundations that awarded OA over $42,000 this past year for a variety of special projects.

The vibrant support of our local business community is another measure of our success. Annual business sponsorships plus the support of major events such as the Dinner Auction and Pro-Am Golf Outing remind us that our mission extends far beyond our campus. Our students graduate highly skilled and ready to take on the challenges of life with character, integrity, and dedication. Area businesses know this and look forward to hiring our grads one day.

Special memorial gifts, planned estate gifts, and anonymous gifts also brought the Academy additional financial support and an opportunity to gratefully remember those whose lives reflected our motto of “virtue, honor and education.” This legacy continues far beyond what Mother Teresa Hackelmeier could ever have imagined!

And last, but certainly never least, our sponsorship from the Sisters of St. Francis is a gift of immeasurable worth. Their lives of dedicated service continue to inspire each student and staff member. The ability to “live and work” together on this beautiful campus, daily acknowledging our shared history and common mission, empowers every day. We are blessed to pray together, sometime eat lunch together, and receive their assistance in classrooms and offices. This is the 21st century OA family!

Meister Eckhart once said: “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was “Thank you,’ that would suffice.” And so we sincerely pray this for each of you; may you know how deeply your support is appreciated and how richly blessed OA is because of your support.

Wishing you peace and all good. Thank you.

Meet the Board of Trustees

Susan is an architect at Susan Glaser Designs and is a 1980 OA Alumni. She is mother to OA students Lucy ‘09, Chase ‘12, Ivy ‘15, and Margaret ‘17. “I have a strong

attachment to Oldenburg Academy. Both my mother and my grandmother attended school here, so it is a family tradition. The most valuable thing that I received from my education here was my work ethic. I remember being more prepared than my friends who entered college with me and my daughter has had the same experience. I am on the Oldenburg Academy board because I see it as the highest and best use of my time in regards to helping the mission of OA.”

“Grateful for the lifelong friends and educational opportunities that ICA offered me as a student, I appreciate the role that the Sisters of St. Francis, Board of Trustees, faculty and staff continue to play

in the growth and development of OA students. Providing avenues for fostering the rich diversity of gifts possessed by the OA students and teachers is satisfying. It is gratifying to observe the numerous ways in which OA students, faculty, staff and board members use their talents and skills in the service of others. In the tradition of Franciscan hospitality, giving is the key to living.”

Bob ia a Nurse Anesthetist at Margaret Mary Health in Batesville. He is the father of OA alum Matty ‘15 and current OA students Nathan ‘17 and Hannah ‘19.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the students, faculty, and staff at Oldenburg Academy. At this time, I will be happy with what we have -- dedicated faculty, wonderful students, parents and Franciscan Sisters willing to support a worthy cause. This is not happenstance. There is much dedication and energy put forth by many. Let’s keep up the work to make Oldenburg Academy ‘So Worth It.’”

“My service on the Oldenburg Academy’s Board is important to me. I grew up on a farm near Oldenburg and I appreciate the value of hard work, the importance of

faith and family and the gift of a quality education. Oldenburg Academy is a living demonstration of those values. I believe my education at the Academy has contributed immensely to my success in adulthood, and I would like nothing better than for every young person who wants an OA education to have the same opportunity. It was and is ‘so worth it.’”

A gift to Oldenburg Academy through the State of Indiana Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) is a unique opportunity to support tuition assistance at OA. Donations to the SGO fund not only benefit the students who receive the tuition assistance but also permit the donor to receive a substantial 50% tax credit as a result of their donation. This giving opportunity allows the donor to multiply their gift and magnify our blessings by making an OA education possible for even more students.

For more information: www.oldenburgacademy.org/giving-to-an-sgo

SGOAn SGO is a not for profit that collects donations that

are given back to the school the donor designates.

These donations are distributed to assist students who may not otherwise be able to consider an OA education.

How it works…

Say you made a past donation of $300

Therefore, $1000 donation through an SGO will have a similar

out of pocket cost.

Donations made to an SGO are elegible for a 50% IN state tax credit.

Then, a federal deduction on the remainder of the gift.

but, You are actually providing $1,000 to OA!

You can donate any amount to an SGO… Hundreds to Thousands!

Payments can be made by…

OASIS

I am honored to be highlighting OASIS for the OA Newsletter. OASIS is the acronym for the Oldenburg Academy Students In Sports, the Oldenburg Academy sports boosters committee. With athletics an integral part of the high school experience for most OA students, OASIS helps to reduce the associated costs through fund raising events.

OASIS fundraisers are managed by parents, coaches, and students. Annual fundraisers include: chicken dinners, Super Bowl Sunday breakfast, catering the Batesville Casket Picnic, concessions at the Oldenburg Freudenfest, Xavier games and the Romweber Fear Factory, Ford Drive 4 UR School, a mattress sale, SEI Boys Basketball Coaches Dinner, and the Ammann - Brinkmoeller Hall Of Fame. Other fundraisers such as manning a concession stand at Reds games and the Oldenburg Firemen’s Fest have been retired, but were instrumental in purchasing the bus that transports student athletes to and from events.

By the numbers, last year OASIS netted $23,000 which was

an increase of 32% over 2014. And 2014 saw a 48% net

increase over 2013. Last year over $16,000 was used specifically for sports support. Monies raised last year purchased: team uniforms

for girls soccer, cheerleading, boys basketball, girls golf shirts, and boys tennis bags, coaches’ sports-wear, performance improvement

equipment, achievement honors and awards, and netting for baseball and softball. This year we have already purchased the new HOF

plaques and begun the leveling of the soccer field and softball field. And in the past, OASIS has also assisted in purchasing gym seating,

lighting and sound system as well as the gym floor refinishing.

Equally important, there is a friend-raising aspect to OASIS. Lasting friendships have been made by parents meeting other parents: spending a little time together, manning a concession stand or attending the monthly meetings. Parents get to know students by serving together at Superbowl Sunday Breakfast and at Freudenfest.

Come join us at our monthly meetings normally the first Wednesday of the month at 6:00 PM in the OA student lounge. We are always looking for new fundraisers to further reduce the cost of athletics at OA. There’s a lot to do, but we have a great time doing it.

Now, more than ever, is the time for OASIS to provide for our student athletes. Please volunteer to help at these events and do everything you can to spread the good news of OA academics, athletics, OASIS, and Jesus!

twice Blessed

Twice Blessed Resale Store is a not for profit resale store whose primary aim is to help support OA’s tuition assistance fund and to help the school’s overall budget to keep tuition affordable for as many area

families as possible. In just 9 years, Twice Blessed has raised

almost $200,000!

Twice Blessed also provides assistance to many local families in need outside the Academy: household fire victims, individuals in financial need, as well as people referred to us by local churches.

In addition, the store provides assistance to Safe Passage, a local shelter for battered

women. Every new client is given a chance to ‘shop for free’ at the store to get essential clothing and other items when they first arrive.

Also, Twice Blessed provides donations to local church rummage sales. St. Louis School, Holy Family Church, and the Ripley Co. Free Store are where clothing, shoes, toys and household items that have not sold are donated.

Through the tireless efforts of store manager Barbara Abplanalp Nolting ‘72 and her cheerful and helpful staff and volunteers, the community and the Academy are indeed, “twice blessed”.

RafflesThe car/cash raffle was introduced in March 2015. The $100 tickets were sold by many hard working volunteers from March until July 2015. Congratulations to winner Tom Fowler of Greensburg who chose to take the cash payout instead of the car!

The Lucky Buck Raffle was introduced in 1993 to help provide funds needed for the classrooms, the athletic department and music and art departments. Sale of the weekly drawing tickets provide a great opportunity for everyone to work together (students, parents, faculty, staff and board members). However, student sales play a substantial role in the success

of the fundraiser as they account for 84% of tickets sold.

Oldenburg Academy opened the fall sports season with 3 home matches (boys and girls soccer and volleyball) on August 18. These were the first games that OA students and our guest teams had use of the refurbished locker rooms. OA is very grateful to Tom and Sandra Ammann, nephew of Sr. Mary Ammann, OSF, the former teacher, coach and first Athletic Director of the Academy, whose memorial donation has made this upgrading possible. New lockers and shelving, motion sensor lighting, upgraded flooring, and fresh paint and decals all contribute to the appealing, renewed look. The special dedication included a blessing by Sr. Margie Niemer, OSF, OA Board of Trustee member and representative of the Sisters of St. Francis Leadership Council.

Oldenburg Academy is blessed to have several Sisters of St. Francis who volunteer to make our school a better place. They help in our offices every weekday, or several days a week, most weeks of the year. Their volunteer time, combined, averages approximately almost 100 hours a week. While they do the typical office jobs of filing, proofreading, preparing deposits, making copies, making phone calls, keeping accurate records, etc., they are a blessing to us in many other ways too.

These sisters spend time with our students through adopt-a-sis, they share their faith and love of our Lord, they are always smiling; and pray for us too. They are also an inspiration that their age never slows them down. They enjoy being busy and helping our school and our students.

We are grateful for their dedication, their words of wisdom and the many hours they spend with us.

The Academy Fund is Oldenburg Academy’s campaign for annual giving. While tuition allows us to do what we are asked to do – educate our students, the Academy Fund affords us the opportunity to do what we aspire to do - which is to enhance the educational experience by providing resources to more fully integrate best practices and innovative opportunities identified through our continuous improvement model.

The list below recognizes and honors our many generous donors who have made contributions from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015 to the Academy Fund. These gifts have helped OA remain in a strong position to continue providing the highest quality, faith-based secondary education to our students. It is with a grateful heart that we thank each and every donor listed and promise our ongoing prayers of gratitude and remembrance.

A Gift to OA ... So Worth It!

In Memory:A donation to the Academy Fund can be made to celebrate the joy of a birthday, wedding, anniversary, graduation or special occasion. In addition, it is also one of the most meaningful ways to pay tribute or remembrance to someone who has had a positive impact on your life. These memorials and honorariums are special gifts with dual recipients - the person you are honoring and the students of Oldenburg Academy.

Lisa Brinkmoeller Holstrom ‘80,

Vice President

Donna Mitchell Hamblin ‘65,

SecretaryAfter Oldenburg, I graduated from the Evening College of the University of Cincinnati with a BS in Administrative Management with a minor in Journalism in 1974. I joined The Procter & Gamble Company in 1977 and retired from IT in 2001. My husband and I have three children and six grandchild between us. We moved to Moores Hill in 2006. I am an Associate of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, and enjoy attending their seminars and gatherings. I volunteer at the Batesville Food pantry every Wednesday and am a parishioner of Holy Family Church where I am a greeter at the 5:30 pm Mass on Saturday.

Mary Kay Kunkel ‘79, Treasurer

After graduating I pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education K- 12, followed by a Master’s of Education K-8. I have been teaching in public school systems since 1984, with a ten year break to raise my three children. Fourteen of those years I taught 4th grade English/Language Arts (ELA), and served as the English Department Chair, at the School for Creative and Performing Arts. Hearing the hallways filled with instruments and singing voices always reminded me of my days at “ICA” in the music building. Most recently, I am serving as an ELA Instructional Coach in Cincinnati

Public Schools.

I am currently a member of Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, ASCD. Additionally, I was nominated for and accepted into Delta Kappa Gamma Society, which promotes excellence in education and the professional and personal growth of women educators.

My reason for reconnecting with the Academy is the importance of personal history and the rekindling of friendships started while at the Academy. I welcome this additional opportunity to serve.

Meet the New Officers

Nita Mauer ‘82, President

After graduating from ICA, I continued my Franciscan-based education at Marian College (now Marian University). I am currently an HR professional working in a global transit company whose North America base is in Cincinnati. I have been afforded the opportunity to chair our Wellness Committee for our corporate office. I have experience in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. My most recent board experience was as Program Chair for the Greater Cincinnati Human Resource Association. My strong reconnection with the Academy occurred through my involvement in establishing holly’s rOAd to education, an annual 5K supporting the Holly Bruns Scholarship at the Academy. This has energized me to seek an office in the Alumni Association to further serve my Academy family. Outside of work and volunteer activities, I enjoy gardening, playing guitar and spending time with family and friends.

After her time at Oldenburg and Hermana Carmen, Lisa started on an educational path to her doctorate, with 2 degrees in Spanish. In Cincinnati, she became an advocate for Latino health and education, serving on the Cincinnati Community Action Agency Board among other volunteer efforts. Lisa is currently the Senior Assistant Dean in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Cincinnati, ensuring that all students get the support they need to reach the graduation stage. Lisa and her husband Phil are empty-nesters, living in Cincinnati with their dog Griffey (named after Senior, not Junior). Their children, Holly and Will, live in Austin, Texas and Cincinnati respectively. Lisa can be reached at [email protected].

Alumni Relations Liaison

Over the course of the Homecoming Weekend, the Oldenburg Academy Alumni

Alumni News

From the Alumni Office

Association was proud to welcome our alumni back to our school.

The success of Homecoming and other alumni events throughout the year is due to the hard work and dedication of the Alumni Board members. Over the past four years Pam Decker Vonderhaar ’64 and Liz Hartman Stenger ‘71 have served as president and vice president respectively. Acting as a team with Jane Bedel Walke ’76, treasurer, and Bertie Hartman Schmidt ’64, secretary, they have teamed together to grow the Alumni Scholarship Fund, organize alumni events, and promote the alumni association. We thank them for

their service these last four years. Their efforts to promote the Academy and support her alumni are testaments to their devotion to our school. Thank you for giving back to our school and your graduates.

Now the Alumni Association turns a page in our 114-year history. We are happy to welcome the newly elected board members: Nita Mauer ’82, president; Lisa Brinkmoeller Holstrom ‘80, vice president; Mary Kay Kunkel ’79, treasurer; and Donna Mitchell Hamblin ’65, secretary. We look forward to supporting you and your work in the coming years; All Hail to our loved alma mater!

Hello OA!

I would like to start by thanking everyone for their warm welcome and support over the past three months. Oldenburg Academy has been an enjoyable and refreshing start to my 18th year in education.

Life at OA

The older I get the more I firmly believe that one of the main components of education is to build strong positive relationships with the students, parents and the community that supports the school. This is what I have strived to do over the past 17 years and will continue to do during my time here at OA.

After a great Fall season I am looking forward to the Winter sports and all the excitement that comes with them!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have and again thank you for all the support!

Wishing you all the best,

Brian A. McFeeAthletic Director/Dean of Student Life

The first class of inductees are 47 individuals who were previously identified as recipients of the Ammann-Brinkmoeller Award and/or recognized upon graduation from the Academy from 1980 – 1997 as superior athletes. This reimagined athletic hall of fame presents an opportunity to honor these outstanding individuals and create a structure for new members to be added annually. This Athletic Hall of Fame is named for Sr. Mary Ammann, OSF who was the first Athletic Director at the Academy and Mrs. Pat Brinkmoeller who was an early and highly successful coach and teacher. Together, these visionary women were responsible for bringing a competitive, IHSAA sanctioned athletic program to ICA/OA.
