OMD Scholars have already demonstrated their motivation to succeed, investing their time to be great professionals. These are people you should pay attention to.

One Million Degrees Scholars have a strong work ethic and a fierce desire to succeed. They are highly motivated community college students from low-income communities pursuing degrees in challenging fields including healthcare, education, medical technology, and computer science.

OMD Scholars receive support in four critical areas: personal, academic, financial, and professional. They develop the job readiness skills that make them great employees. They learn to value team work, create actionable goals from feedback they receive, and take accountability for their own success. They also receive professional coaching along the way to help ensure they graduate with the skills needed to excel in their chosen fields.

ONE MILLION DEGREES

Sixty-five percent of Illinois’ public college students attend community college, but only one in four will graduate with a degree within three years. OMD is changing that. OMD Scholars are graduating from community college at a rate double the state average and transferring to four-year colleges and universities or entering the workforce in high-demand fields.

Oak Street Health

works closely with

each intern on areas

of improvement, and

finds that the skills

learned as part of

OMD transfer well to

Oak Street Health’s

rigorous standards.

Oak Street Health operates 20 clinics in Chicago, Indiana, and Michigan tailored to the unique needs of people with Medicare. Nine OMD Scholars pursuing degrees at Chicago community colleges in business, pre-med, nursing, social work, and dental hygiene were part of its summer internship program this year.

Oak Street Health’s model is based on personal contact with local residents who often need assistance navigating the Medicare system. Interns learn the basics of Medicare, including eligibility requirements, before they go into the clinic territories to conduct well-being checks on the residents. If a resident is interested and eligible, interns manage the doctor, nurse practitioner, and physician assistant schedules across the 20 clinics.

Alicia Thomas, Director of Community Outreach at Oak Street Health, found that the skills acquired through OMD transfer well to their rigorous standards. “The OMD Scholar interns who attend Chicago’s community colleges are mature and focused,” she said. “They have the necessary soft skills to do the job, plus the ability to be coached and take initiative.”

Ms. Thomas also finds that the interns’ involvement with OMD has positive effects on their work performance. “We’re finding that interns who have support

from someone outside of Oak Street Health do well in the program. OMD also holds them accountable.”

Oak Street Health’s goal is to find interested and qualified interns who can remain at Oak Street Health beyond the internship program. “We look at the internship as a three-month interview. If they’ve already graduated, they may be offered a full-time position, or if they’re still in school, we’ll accommodate their schedules so that they can work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, while attending classes.”

Because of this year’s success with OMD Scholars, Ms. Thomas plans to continue their partnership with OMD next year.

Guillermo CuelloScholar Spotlight

Guillermo Cuello, a 19-year-old business major attending Wilbur Wright College, sees his internship at Oak Street Health as a pathway to his future.

“I want to work for a company that has good values and makes a positive impact on the community and society as a whole,” he said. “When I learned about the internship at Oak Street Health, I researched the company and found it to be the type of company I was looking for in my career.”

As an Oak Street Health intern, he works in the community conducting well-being checks on residents within the clinic territories, making calls to patients, and scheduling appointments. “You get satisfaction knowing that you helped someone who may not have had it otherwise.”

OMD helps Guillermo develop both academically and professionally, providing tutoring

and assistance with writing when he needs it. The OMD program prepared him not only for the interview process to obtain the internship at Oak Street Health, but how to excel on the job.

“Guillermo is a very impressive intern,” said Alicia Thomas, Director of Community Outreach, Oak Street Health. “He consistently performs well and has represented the company in Chicago, Rockford, and Indianapolis, where he is serving on a special team. He takes direction well, completes 100% of his tasks on a daily basis, follows up with his patients, and is always in a great mood.”

“Without OMD, I wouldn’t have the opportunities I have now,” he said. “I see people who have the same struggles I went through and I tell them it may take them longer to do some things, but anything is possible if you work at it.”
