Irish Treasure

Somewhere over the rainbow lies a lovely Emerald Isle,

a place that seems to beckon folks to come and stay a while.

Once you’ve had a taste of it you’ll want to keep going back, for the Irish can provide you

with any treasure that you lack.

One pot of gold is their friendship - they are full of good will and charms, always a smile and a cheery hello

as they welcome you with open arms.

Some of their treasure is scenery the hills, the dales, the moors, winding brooks and rivers

and Dublin’s famous bright colored doors.

Laughter’s a national treasure, so is the twinkle in their eye,

when they start with “This is a true story…” you know it will be a lie!

They laugh at their own sense of humor and it’s absolutely contagious.

Some of the stories they’d have us believe are totally outrageous.

I’ll go back to the end of that rainbow, for there’s lots I’ve not yet seen. God knew what he was doing

when he painted our Ireland green!

Jean Kay

Cindy and Arthur Beresford, volunteer coordinators for the Food on the Corner sandwiches, are very grateful to those who donated strawberry jam and to Doug McLean and his coffee buddies for donating enough cash to buy about 10

more jars. Each month, the sandwiches require about 5 jars of jam (depending on the size of the jar) so we are in continual need of donations.

Luncheon, Friday, February 17th. Although the entertainment

program got changed from disco tunes to tunes from the distant past, we enjoyed the singing of the talented Susan Skemp. She promises to bring us her disco program when she does a return engagement later this year. Lunch was delicious thanks to Adrian. We are grateful to everyone who purchased tickets for the Share the Wealth draw since half the money is given to KinVillage. The happy winners were Jean (left) for 40.00 and Hazel (right) for 42.50. In addition to the three door prizes, a special prize was given to the lovely dancing couple who graciously accepted a bit of teasing from Susan.

Saturday, February 18th - We are so fortunate that Gail

and Doug (Cheek to Cheek) have very talented friends that they persuaded to entertain with them. What a fun night. Laura threw the closest toonie and won a bottle of Screech. You didn’t need a partner to have a good time and the finale was a lot of fun too. Akiko won 150 in the 50/50 draw.

Lion - April 11 - Starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman. A five-year-old Indian boy gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, thousands of kilometers from home. He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.

Queen of Katwe - March 28 - You don’t need to know anything about the game of chess to love this movie. It is a real life story of someone who rose from humble surroundings and worked hard to develop her talent and achieve her goal. It will keep you hooked from beginning to end.

Bridget Jones’ Baby - March 14 - Bridget's focus on single life and her career is interrupted when she finds herself pregnant, but with one hitch ... she can only be fifty percent sure of the identity of her baby's father. This movie, for all its comedic ridiculousness and wild circumstance of the paternity crisis, is a jubilant celebration of women.

Breakfast helps maintain healthy weight. Oatmeal with fresh fruit is a good source of fiber. The best way to e ercise your heart is by walking or dancing! Doctors recommend 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

Certain house chores can count as e ercise! Cashews and almonds are a good way to snack healthy. Salads are an e cellent way to fill up. Yum!

You should read the labels on the foods you buy

Dried fruits make a great snack. Drinking water is the best way to stay hydrated.

Did you know?....soaking your fruit, including berries and grapes, in a large bowl of cold water with a little vinegar for 10 minutes then draining do not rinse will prevent molding and there is no taste transference. I’ve done this and it really does work even on blueberries. I’ve never been able to eat a whole bo in one sitting so it’s nice to know that I can keep them for a few e tra days using this method.

Putting a bit of vinegar on a paper towel then wrapping it over the e posed cheese left in the package will prevent the cheese from molding. I’ve also used this tip with great success.
