6 ON OUR DOORSTEP Please remember to mention On Our Doorstep when responding to adverts

With Roe Green Church featured, last issue,in “A Stroll Around Roe Green”, it may be of interest to read more about its history, beliefs and what it does today.

In 1806, Independent Methodism brokeaway from mainstream Methodism for several reasons. Firstly, many members werepoor and couldn’t afford their contributionstowards the Ministers’ pay. Secondly, manyheld Quaker views which do not believe in aseparate clergy and lastly, many followersdid not like the authority exercised by ministers and held their own separate services.

The Manchester Church, who founded theChurch at Roe Green in 1808, belonged tothe last group. This may account for the independent nature of the Church and indeed of Roe Greeners themselves.

The church, as did many nonconformistchurches, promoted Temperance, urging abstention from alcohol. Temperance becamea national issue in Victorian times as alcoholwas seen as blight on families and society.

The Church today still has a no alcohol ruleon its premises, but is far more concernedwith spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, which is after all what a Church is for. Thebig change in the Church happened in the1960’s under the leadership of Dennis Wallwork, the local optician, and David Hill.Dennis had attended a Billy Graham Rally inLondon and came to see the importance ofa personal faith in Jesus Christ.

Today the Church has two part-time Ministers;Sarah Hargreaves, the Youth Minister, andIan Ley the Community Outreach Minister.

Roe Green Church is a family friendlychurch, trying to develop contacts and meetnew people in the area. Sunday Service is at10.45am and includes a separate meetingfor children.

The Church has just joined the Baptist Unionso perhaps it should be known as just “TheChurch on the Green”.

Weddings:How do youmake your biggest day,the Best Day of your life?

It sounds daunting andstressful but “The Wedding” is a very

happy occasion, so planning it should beequally as fun. Enjoy the preparation, and tohelp you here are a few essential planning tips:-

1, Save, Save, Save!Start saving as soon as you get engaged.Although tradition says the bride's parents payfor the wedding, this is frequently untrue fortoday's couples. Set up a regular standingorder to a high interest account, where youknow it won’t be touched.

2. Set a BudgetThis is critical for outlining what you can spend, and ensuring you don’t start married life in debt.Create a detailed spreadsheet of all your itemsto help set out a realistic budget. Set aside acontinency, as there will always be unexpectedexpenses. Work out what you can actuallyafford to spend overall. At this point you mayneed to prioritise what's important to you, cross off anything you don't need and look atalternative ways of doing things. Once youhave a realistic budget, stick to it and alwaysupdate your figures when you get moredetailed quotes and prices.

3. The Planning TeamGood planning is key to the success of your bigproject and leads to a stress-free wedding day.Be realistic about how much time you can spendplanning your wedding and perhaps considerbooking a professional wedding planner. If you choose the DIY route, remember to giveyourself time - a wedding takes time to organise.Buy a wedding planning book to work out aschedule and keep to it.

4. Find Your VenueThe availability and choice of venue for the

ceremony and reception will drive the actualdate of the wedding. Choosing the right oneswill take time. Review reception venues within asensible distance to the ceremony before youconfirm your booking. When both venues havebeen chosen, the whole day will then fall intoplace. If you choose an outdoor venue - berealistic - have a wet weather contingency plan!

5. The Guest ListBe strict when it comes to the guest-list, even ifyou risk causing offense. Extra guests can bumpthe costs up significantly as well as ruin tableplans. And if you've said no children, don'tmake exceptions as this will definitely upset theother parent-guests attending.

6. Delegate and Share the LoadYou only have one pair of hands and areprobably working full time, so ask others tohelp. They'll be thrilled to be involved. It’ll befun and you may save money too.

7. Themes and Colour SchemesFlowers, stationery, table linen and even thewedding cake can all designed to complementone another and co-ordinate your wedding look.If you need ideas, look at the season, or yourwedding month will also offer a variety ofseasonal flowers, which can inspire your scheme.

8. Do Your ResearchPrices and quality of service can vary hugelyand the selection can be overwhelming. Go onreferrals or friends' experiences - these providethe safest choices.

9. Setting the PaceThink about the pace of the day. Ideally, youwould like it to last as long as possible but asuccessful wedding is one that flows and whereyour guests never get bored, hungry or thirsty.

It’s a sad fact that most people who embark on diets give up well before theyachieve their goals, and most of those that do reach their target weight will putit all back on, and more. So how do you give yourself the best chance of success?

1 CHOOSE A TIMESCALEto reach your goal that relies on losingno more than 1.5lbs per week. Thismeans that you won’t have to adopt toorestrictive a diet and will allow for theoccasional treat, special event andsetbacks.

2 GET SOME SUPPORTGet some sort of support. Whether thatis embarking on a weight loss programmewith a friend, joining a local weight lossgroup, or getting professional coaching,it will help you to stay focused and getyou back on track when your motivationhas dipped.

3 PLAN YOUR EATINGPlan your eating. Work out what youneed to have in the house or take withyou on a journey and then shop andprepare accordingly. That way you areless likely to find yourself having tochoose something which works againstyour goals rather than supports them.

4 KEEP A FOOD DIARYMake up your own sheets or use anonline service and record everything youconsume. This helps you to stick to youreating programme and also provides away to discover what may have gonewrong if results don’t turn out asexpected. Keeping a food diary has beenshown to increase weight loss results by50% over time.

5 EXERCISE REGULARLYThat doesn’t necessarily mean long gymsessions or getting up at the crack ofdawn to go for a run! Regular shortbursts of activity built up over time willburn calories and, more importantly, willmake you feel better about yourself andtherefore more likely to eat healthily.

If you would like more help, then why notlisten to this free recording of my best tips forlosing weight? Just go to the webpage below, add in your name and email and I can send itto you straight away. Secrets of Middlewood - Part II

… of Emperors,Kings, Dukesand Earls

It seems hard to believe in the present day,but Worsley in the 19th and early 20thcenturies was a popular social destination, not only for our own royalty , but also forthe crowned heads of Europe.

The magnet for this attraction was the localaristocracy, initially the “Canal Duke”, theDuke of Bridgewater and later his heirs, theEgerton family the Earls of Ellesmere. Suchwas their wealth and prestige, stemmingfrom their ownership of the coal mines andCanal, not to mention vast acreages of land, that they could afford to entertain thehighest in the land in style.

The initial wealth was built by the Duke withhis ambitious development of his assets. However, his original inheritance of WorsleyOld Hall as a residence was considered toosmall and outdated so in 1759, around thetime that his famous canal was built, theDuke ordered the construction of “The BrickHall” - an elegant 3 storey building in the new“Georgian” style, facing south overlookingthe canal, in what is now Middlewood.

The Duke had just a suite of rooms at thenew Hall for when he visited Worsley anddescribed the Hall as his “Steward’s house”.John Gilbert, who administered the Worsleyestates for the Duke, was installed there.

1n 1795, Gilbert died and the administrationand tenancy were passed onto his son until1803 when the old Duke died. The Duke’sWill stipulated that his estates, mines andthe Canal should form the Bridgewater Trustand be administered by a Superintendent

Trustee, Robert Haldane Bradshaw, whothen resided at the Hall until 1833. The Halland all its estates were inherited by LordFrancis Egerton, a distant relation of the“Canal Duke”, and he was “forced to resign”.

In 1837, four years after he inherited theWorsley estates, Lord Francis Egerton arrivedto take up residence. He soon decided boththe Old Hall and Brick Hall lacked the grandeurbefitting his position and commissioned thefamous architect Sir Edward Blore to designa new hall that would celebrate the fashionableVictorian Gothic style and provide for hisambitions to provide hospitality to the greatand the good.

Completed in 1846, the New Hall was almostseven years in the making. It was a vastfour-storey mansion garnished with pinnacles, turrets and towers and surrounded bystables and outbuildings over a spaciouslevelled area. The Brick Hall was then totallydemolished.

The interior of the New Hall was as grand asits exterior. Adorned by the work of fashionableartists of the day, the finest wood carvingsand fittings garnered from other statelyhomes of much longer lineage.

Built on the highest point of land south ofLeigh Road, the Hall was approached by achoice of three drives:- Through a Lodge and great wrought-iron

gates opposite St Mark’s Church (the lattercan now be seen further along Leigh Road)

Via a bridge over Leigh Road from the Old Hall (the piers still exist)

From the Lodge and Kitchen Garden whichstill exist and form the Garden Centre.

One of the glories of the Hall, which havesadly vanished, were its gardens. They sweptdown from the terrace and sloped down toa beautiful lake, complete with an islandand romantic “folly” causeway.

So grand was the Hall and so respected theowners for their hospitality that it enjoyedmany eminent visitors:- Queen Victoria visited in 1851 and 1857 The Prince and Princess of Wales came in

1869 and again in 1909 as King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.

The Crown Prince of Germany and EmpressEugenie were also guests.

In 1914, at the outbreak of war, the Hall wasoffered to the army and used as a hospitalfor officers. The Egerton/Ellesmere familyleft the area permanently and severed thearistocratic link with Worsley.

The Fourth Earl sold the estates in 1923 tothe newly-formed Bridgewater Estates Limited for £3.3m (probably hundreds ofmillions at present-day values!). In the following years the new owners attemptedto sell the Hall, without success.

In the Second World War, used again by themilitary, providing temporary quarters forevacuees from Dunkirk, then as a home forthe 218th Battalion of the LancashireFusiliers until 1942. In 1943, the top floorwas damaged by fire after which it was usedto billet American soldiers awaiting the D-Day landings.

Those were the last occupants as, riddledwith dry rot and undermined by subsidenceby the very mines which had brought its former owners great wealth, it was condemned to demolition.

It was sold for a mere £2,500 to a Mr Littler,a scrap merchant, who began demolition in1946 and completed it in 1949. What became of its precious wood carvings andother riches is not known.

The building itself was razed to the groundbut, there is still much to be found in the“jungle” which has grown over the site.Apart from easily-found remains such as thegarden centre Lodge and Kitchen Garden, there are boundary walls and portals, stoneterraces on which the Hall stood, the Lakeand folly remains and, of course the greatgates on Leigh Road. No doubt the BBC’s“Time Team” could make a great programmeon the “Two Lost Halls of Worsley”
