A vast and fertile land nestled at the foot of a verdant hill, the municipality of Molave was created on June 16, 1948 by virtue of Re-

public Act No. 286 authored by the late Congress-man Juan S. Alano. On June 14, 1949, however, RA 286 was amended by RA 377 establishing its pres-ent location, boundaries and limits of territories.

Its name was tak-en from a hardwood, the Molave tree which abounds in the place

during the early years. It is 37.94 kilometers away from Pagadian City, the provincial cap-

ital of Zamboanga del Sur. Settlers from the distant places of Luzon,

Visayas and Mindanao were attracted to this rich land in the Salug Valley area : Cebuanos, Boholanos, Ilongos, Ilocanos, Leyteños and other ethnic groups. But the Subanens were known to be the early settlers of Molave. Today, Molave is the hub of com-merce a n d t r a d e in the e a s t -e r n p a r t of the p r o v -i n c e a n d m o v -ing at a very r a p i d p a c e towards becoming the most progres-sive municipality of Zamboanga del Sur. Our story however, goes beyond the territories of Molave but it used to be a parcel of this prosperous town. Let me take you further, then. Sev-en kilometers from Molave is a place called Tuburan, which is now a part of Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur. As the name denotes, it has boundless

water source and people have found a haven in this natural spring resort.Molave Vice Mayor Flavio J. Saniel Jr. beams with pride as he shared to us the story behind Eriberta Spring Resort, a very beautiful and precious legacy left by his parents : Flavio Sr. and Eri-

berta – where t h e n a m e of the resort w a s culled. V i c e Mayor Saniel fondly recalls h i s ch i ld-h o o d

days. The youngest in a brood of 8, five of them were born and grew up in Tuburan, where the family owns 7 hectares of land. During that time, there was no road and they had to walk several kilometers just to go to school. He loved the water, so when it was time to take a pick on their share, he chose the water. What he had in mind was a retirement place

- - - just a perfect place to sit back and reminisce the beautiful memo-ries kept inside the heart through the years. A recent visit to Australia made him envision this type of resort, where people would flock during sum-mer because it’s much cooler than staying on the beach. He relentlessly pursued this dream and embarked on the arduous job of transforming Eri-berta, so with an initial investment of P200,000, he opened Eriber-ta Spring Resort to the public in 2003. From that time on, the in-come it earned was invested in the resort for improvements and oth-er amenities. He also planted several varieties of fruit trees in the area in-cluding mahogany and hopes to es-tablish a park very soon. Foreigners are frequent visitors to Eriberta which is a very idyllic place. Add to it the cool and refresh-ing waters, it also has several pools and cottages with prices ranging from 100,200,500 and 700. The are also function halls for small groups as

well as a large one, the Flavio Hall which can accommodate 500 people, so ideal for gatherings, reunions and other similar activities. He gladly relates that there was one time that in just a matter of 16 days, he earned 200 thousand from the resort. He was really amazed at how things turned out! He uses the income earned for further develop-

ment of the resort, which is now fast be-coming a tour-ist attraction and an ideal place for fami-lies and people just wanting to unwind and let go of pressures from work.

He looks forward to his retire-ment years, and surely, he will en-joy staying in this “heaven here on earth” place, enjoying the cool wind and the sound of rippling waterfalls. Add to that a mini-park and myr-iad of colorful fishes in a pond where one could feed them and appreciate the beauty of God’s creations in this place called Eriberta Spring Resort. For all nature-lovers, this is the place where you should be!

Palace says Phl-China energy exploration agreement should serve interests of both nations

M alacañang said that any agreement between China and the Philippines particularly on energy exploration should serve the interests of both nations.

It was reported that the Philippine government is working with China for an oil exploration agree-ment. President Benigno Aquino III leaves for Chi-na Tuesday for a five-day state visit there. “It’s still in the ex-ploratory stage. We don’t know yet kung ano na ang details of the agree-ment. But certainly what we’ll be taking into con-sideration the interests of the parties. Mahalaga ay dapat talagang patas yung agreement to all concerned,” Presidential spokesman Edwin Laci-erda said in a radio inter-view over state-run dzRB Radyo ng Bayan on Satur-day. While the discus-

sions are still exploratory Lacierda said it is a good sign because it shows that both sides have interests for continued dialogue notwithstanding some dis-agreements between the two countries. “Multifaceted po ang relasyon natin with China and it shows that one of the facets of our relation-ship is the trade aspect. When you go to china, it will show our trade, our culture, our business and our ties with China. It’s a good sign,” he said. Aside from energy cooperation between Chi-na and the Philippines, Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Liu Jianchao said this week that Chi-nese businessmen are also

interested in investing in the Philippines particu-larly through the public-private partnership (PPP) being spearheaded by the Aquino administration. Chinese businessmen are following closely the initiative of the PPP and they want to be involved in these projects, Liu said adding they are waiting for detailed announce-ment. President Aquino’s state visit to China could also open up a lot of op-portunities for the Philip-pines, Liu said. China can provide the Philippines both concessional and commercial loans as the Asian giant economy ex-pands its investments in the region. (as)

Malacanang says Phl-Japan relation remains stable

Malacanang assured on Saturday that the Philippine’s relations with Japan remain very stable following the resignation of Japa-nese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.

In an interview over government-run dzRB Radyo Ng Bayan, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said “Our relations with Japan is very stable, we have a very compe-tent and able ambas-sador there at tuloy-tuloy naman po ang ating relations with Japan.” The Aquino gov-ernment, through Philippine Ambassa-dor to Japan Manuel M. Lopez, reassures the Japanese govern-ment that the multi-faceted cooperative relationship between the two countries will continue. “We will just wait

for their next Prime Minister. But apart from the resignation of their Prime Minis-ter, the work contin-ues, the relationship continues and we see no difference or we see no change in the relations between Japan and the Philip-pines.” Lacierda said over the radio. Japanese Prime Minister Kan an-nounced on Friday his resignation as party leader during a meet-ing with members of the ruling Democrat-ic Party of Japan. The party will elect next week a new leader who will take over as prime minister.

Last Friday, the parliament approved two bills. Kan said he believes the two bills -- the deficit-financ-ing bond bill and the new energy promo-tion bill -- will push forward his recon-struction policies. Last March 11, Japan was hit by dev-astating earthquake and tsunami and sub-sequent nuclear cri-sis. The disaster triggered the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl, as cores overheated and spewed radioactive material into sur-rounding areas. (js)

DIPOLOG CITY, Aug. 27 (PIA) - - Twenty one male employees of the Dipolog City Water District (DCWD) have volunteered to donate blood in a blood-letting activity conducted yesterday by the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC)-Zamboanga del Norte chapter.

The activity, which was covered by the Philippine Infor-mation Agency (PIA), aimed to collect blood donations for patients needing blood trans-fusion such as those infected with dengue or hemorrhagic fe-ver. A total of 22 bags of blood were collect-ed in said bloodletting activity as the PIA se-curity guard was also encouraged to donate blood. Red Cross chap-ter administrator Joshua Bicoy dis-closed that his office

PNoy’s supports RH bill, says Popcom chief

DIPOLOG CITY, Aug. 27 - - Commission on Population (POPCOM) Executive Director Tomas Osias told the press in media interview in Dapitan City yes-terday that the Reproductive Health (RH) bill has been one of the priority bills endorsed by President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III to the Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC).

by Franklin P. Gumapon

Osias underscored the importance of pass-ing the bill for the country to have a national policy on population manage-ment and development. Contrary to what the critics of the RH bill are saying, Osias said the bill seeks to save life

and uphold the rights of the couple. Gabriela Partyl-ist representative Emmi de Jesus, on the other hand, said the RH bill will champion the rights of the women as it as-sures them of greater and wider access to health services.

De Jesus appealed to the press to help dis-seminate correct infor-mation about the bill to the public. She said those who are opposed to the bill “have reduced it to the use of contra-ceptives and condoms, when in fact it is not.” Once passed into

a law, the RH will serve as the national policy on population management and development that will redound to the ben-efit of the poor sectors of the society. According to Osias the RH bill is not popu-lation control; it is more of population manage-ment, “giving a breath-ing space to accelerate

economic growth.” He also cited that the country today has around 98.5 million people with a popula-tion growth rate of 2.04 percent per year. “Giv-en this growth rate, 2 million individuals are added to the population each year and this will hamper the government services due to lack of

resources, he said. Popcom chief Osias and Congresswoman de Jesus came over for a policy forum on RP-RH bill with the local chief executives, religious and civic leaders, academe, students and others as participants. (FPG/PIA-Zambo. Norte)

DIPOLOG CITY, Aug. 26 (PIA) - 317 of the more than 10,000 members of the Office of Senior Citizens Association (OSCA) in Dipolog City have already benefited from the government’s social pension program for indigent older persons for the first and second quarter of 2011. Mr. Cris S. Enoy, Oper-ation-in-Charge of OSCA Cen-ter in Dipolog City, said the P500.00 monthly stipend is additional government assis-tance for indigent older per-sons as provided for under Re-public Act 994, known as the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010. The beneficiaries of the program are determined based on the result of the National Household Targeting System Survey which was conducted by the Department of Social Welfare and Development in 2009. According to Enoy, though Dipolog City has 367 slots for the social pension program for 2011, so far, only

317 indigent older persons have received their P500.00 monthly pension. 164 received their pension in the first quar-ter while another 153 benefi-ciaries were added during the second quarter. Enoy admitted that some pensioners have been discovered to be not qualified to avail of the program. He at-tributed this to the wrong data obtained during the conduct of the survey. However, he pointed out that the error has already been corrected as 7 unqualified beneficiaries were already removed from the list of beneficiaries. The program which has 138,960 total target benefi-ciaries for 2011, has a budget

of P870-million, to be shared among the regions. Because of the limited funding, the DSWD has decided to priori-tize those older persons who are 77 years old and above to be given financial assistance for their personal needs such as food and medicine. Meanwhile, a team from the DSWD Regional Office 9, together with representative from Dipolog City Social Wel-fare and Development Of-fice and OSCA are now going around the different barangays in the city to locate the six pensioners who have not yet received their monthly pen-sion for the first two quarters of 2011.(ALT/ATR/PIA9-Zambo Norte)

Military-media partnership indispensable, says Maj Gen. CoballesPAGADIAN CITY, August 27 (PIA) – “The military and media are very important partners in promoting peace and development.”

Thus declared 1st In-fantry Tabak Division Com-mander Maj Gen. Noel A. Coballes during the TABAK Defense Press Corps’ (TDPC) induction ceremony and fel-lowship night at the Officer’s Club House, Tabak Divison headquarters, Camp Major Cesar Sang-an, Pulacan, La-bangan, Zamboanga del Sur on Wednesday. Speaking before offi-cers and members of TDPC, and to the officers and men of the 1st Infantry (TABAK) di-vision, Coballes, the event’s speaker and administering officer said the military and media both have very im-portant roles in promoting peace and development in the country. “Without the partner-ship of the military and me-dia, the AFP’s objective of protecting the people and securing the sovereignty of the state can never be at-tained,” Coballes explained. Coballes was very glad that the officers and men of the 1st Infantry division maintain a harmonious re-lationship with the TDPC . “ We had been working to-gether by providing our peo-ple a good and peaceful en-

vironment,” Coballes happily said. “Let us continue this partnership and share our common desire of dissemi-nating the programs of the government to the people,” Coballes urged. The newly installed TDPC president, Leah D. Agonoy in her speech said the event was a symbol of strength-ened partnership between the AFP and media. Agonoy said the media who serves as the 4th state and watchdog of our society is expected to be fair and unbiased. “The military, with its strengthened thrust to serve and protect the welfare of the people, will stand firm to deliver their duty to all Filipi-nos. With these differences in our duty, let us work on our commonalities. And that is to serve the people,” Ago-noy said. She said the TDPC was created not to defend and protect the military from their misconducts and from the negative issues and con-troversies that come their way. “We were not created to serve as the spokesper-sons of the 1st Infantry Divi-

sion,” she explained. Agonoy assured the public that TDPC will serve as the bridge between the peo-ple and the officers and men of the military saying that “we are here to facilitate the information that you wanted to tell the people through our unbiased judgments on issues. We are here to serve as your partners in delivering the programs of the govern-ment purely for the welfare of the people,” Agonoy said.”Expect our praises on the accomplishments that the 1st Infantry Division will have in the future. Also ex-pect our criticisms on the misconducts of your men while we maintain our bal-anced reports and commen-taries,” Agonoy said. Asst. chief of staff for civil military operations Lt. Col. Samuel L. Leria con-gratulated the officers and members of TDPC for their continued voluntary service to the media-army under-taking. Division public affairs office (DPAO) chief Capt. Arthur L. Part of the core events of the 2011 Kagay-an Festival, the floats depicted Ca-gayan de Oro City, widely known for its moniker, as the “City of boom, blossom and bloom!” It is the seat of the regional center of Northern Mindanao, Mindanao’s largest economy. The day’s event also provided the pre-climax to the city fies-ta, tomorrow, Aug. 28, in honor of St. Augus-tine, the patron saint of the city. The main thor-oughfare, Apolinar Velez and Antonio Luna Sts., in the heart of the city, had to be closed to vehicular traffic to accommodate the civ-ic-military foot parade

Emano with Vice-Mayor Ceasar Ian Ace-nas, and the rest of the Kagawads of Sangguni-ang Panglungsod Ka-gawad (Council mem-bers) were in sight to greet the fiesta crowd. Majority of the floats carried minia-tures of the different buildings and industries reflecting the econom-ic boom taking place in the city, that included the fields of business and commerce, infor-mation and technology (IT), among others. It also carried min-iature infrastructure and road projects, now being implemented by the city government, like the fly-over in Ba-

Also being show-cased by the floats are the different tour-ist and scenic spots of the city, the foremost of which is the White River Rafting. Meanwhile, to-day’s float competition was only one (1) of the core events of the 2011 Kagay-an Festi-val, Cagayan de Oro City’s annual festival of events promoting culi-nary, sports, cultured and trade and tour-ism.
