IntroductionChallenges in Design and Construction of an Innovative and Sustainable Built Environment is the main theme of the 19th Congress of IABSE.

The economic growth of the global community in combination with the increasing population worldwide results in a higher consumption of all kinds of resources. It is a challenge for the global community to reduce the use of resources and reach a sustainable development and create an environmentally friendly way of life.

Structural and civil engineers have an important role in finding new and innovative solutions that can be used in planning, design and construction of the built environment.

Call for PapersParticipants wishing to present a paper are invited to submit an abstract no longer than 300 words in English, using the template available in September 2015 on the Congress homepage: www.iabse.org/stockholm2016

Abstracts must be received the latest by October 31, 2015.

Note that at least one of the authors of an accepted paper is expected to attend the Congress.

Scientific SessionsScientific Sessions will give an opportunity to present research results, new technical developments, interesting project presentations, lessons learnt and future expectations. For these sessions a paper of six to eight pages in combination with an oral presentation of 10 minutes is expected.

Topic 1Challenges in the development of structures which provide human friendly and traffic efficient solutions for existing cities with remaining flexibility for future changes.

Topic 2Challenges for more cost efficiency in design and construction of the built environment.

Topic 3Challenges in contracts and the procurement process.

Topic 4Challenges for use of modern information and communication technology to our best benefit.

Topic 5Challenges of less disturbance on freight routes during construction and maintenance.

Topic 6Challenges to ensure the safety of temporary structures.

Topic 7Challenges in how to deal with aging infrastructure?

Technical SessionsThere will be Technical Sessions and panel discussions to allow participants to present developments from academia and practice within the context of the global theme. Some topics are presented below. These sessions will start with about three to four short presentations about the specified topic followed directly by a discussion for all attendees to actively participate in. Some topics will be announced in December 2015 as a result and continuation of the IABSE conference in Geneva in 2015.

Abstracts for Technical Sessions shall be submitted according the same time table as abstracts and papers for scientific papers.

Topic AHow to create confidence for new materials, analysis, design, and construction methods.

Topic BBetter use of already known facts; more efficiency in making existing knowledge and results of research into practice.

Topic CStructural safety and risk assessment; comparison of systems in different countries

Topic DHow to develop Product Category Rules (PCR) as a base for Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)?
