Homestead Eucharistic Ministries On the First Friday of every month, a Mass is held at the Homestead nursing home. Volunteers are needed to bring the residents from their room downstairs to where Mass is being celebrated. The time involved would be approximately 1:30-‐3:00. Every Sunday we try to bring communion to the Catholic residents of the Homestead who were once active members and even daily Mass attendees at their home parish. Now if we do not bring communion, the residents mat go a long time before receiving Jesus. If you could with either First Friday or on one Sunday of the month, it would help tremendously. Please call Please call the Parish Office to volunteer or for more details (973)383-‐3566
Sub Tuum Praesidium On September 29, 3028, our Holy Father Pope Francis called on us to pray even more earnestly as we face what he has called, “atime of spiritual turbulence.’ He recommended praying the Rosary every day. He also urged us to pray to St. Michael the Archangel and to say the prayer Sub Tuum Praesidium. This short invocation is said to be the oldest extant prayer asking for the intercession of Our Blessed Mother. At the end of each Mass, we always pray to St. Michael to intercede for us as we face the battle with the power of darkness – Satan. The evil is real in the world and always ready to steer us in the wrong path. Pray for peace, pray for unity, pray that we will embrace each other as brothers and sisters. In addition, it is recommended that we say rosary everyday with the beautiful prayer – Sub Tuum Praesidium Sub Tuum Praesidium We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen
Come Spend Time with Me 9 am -‐‑ 12 Noon
Everyone is invited to spend some time with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. We are presently having the adoration in the Church. This gives more opportunity for people who will want a larger space to pray and to meditate. This will continue hopefully till the end of November. Your hour with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament will repair the evils of the world and bring about peace on earth. During this time of crisis in the Church, please come and pray for peace and unity for the Church. Day and night, Jesus dwells in the Blessed Sacrament because you are the most important person in the world to Him. Remember Christ said, “Come to me all of you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will refresh you…” “Cast all of your anxieties upon the one who cares for you…” My peace is My Gift to you.” (MT 11:28; PT 5:7; JN 14:17).

Remembering the significance of widow’s mite
William Shakespeare’s line remains true about all works of kindness and mercy, in whatever circumstances: “It is twice blessed: it blesses him that gives and him that takes.” Generous giving is the theme of this week's readings. Generous giving reaps its reward when it is done freely and selflessly. In the first reading and the gospel, we witnessed two widows who gave
freely but also ungrudgingly. "In the days of the Biblical stories, the population was divided into fairly rigid social castes. Slaves were the bottom rung, in terms of power and wealth, but among the free persons, the lowest stratum of humanity was the widow." "At that period, a woman only had status in relation to a man. She needed to be a man’s wife, or a father’s daughter, or lacking those connections, the mother to an adult son who could provide care and protection for her. So, a widow, left behind after the death of her husband, if too old to return to her father’s house, and if having no children old enough to provide for her, was a destitute person indeed! This in fact, was before the days of Social Security, or government welfare, or women in the workforce, or housing provided by Habitat for Humanity." Both readings casted the two widows to be our heroes and role models. By giving all they have, both widows did what we will consider today as unthinkable. Saint Paul wrote “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor 9:6-7). And there can be no doubt that the cheerful gift is more acceptable even among people on an everyday level. Thus, the hospitality shown to the famished prophet Elijah by the poor widow of Zarephath, was all the more precious in that it was given with loving respect, and not as a grudging duty. Although she explained that she had only enough for a final meal with her infant son, that she was preparing this “last supper” at the very moment when Elijah arrived. But that never dissuaded Elijah to insist that she should provide food for him with assurance that God will always provide. I don’t think any of us would be very comfortable to ask for such hospitality from someone in their miserable state. The vulnerable widow did not argue but respectfully obeyed Elijah's demand. She did what she could for him and was blessed in the process. And in the gospel, Jesus even explained more about widow's mite. Jesus says, in effect, “Give from the heart.” The widow offered her last bit of money to support the work of God’s priests in the Temple. Her offering to the Temple seemed small to other donors, but it was priceless in value. Both stories of the Widow’s Mite invites us to examine the quality of giving in our lives — not just to Church collections, but to whatever worthy cause attracts our attention and our sympathy. More than once, Jesus spoke about generosity. He not only emphasized the gift be made with a generous heart, but so far as possible in an anonymous, non-fussy way, so that “the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing.” Besides, being present in people’s lives and giving our time can also be more precious than anything else. –Fr. Abuchi
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Know that the greatest service that man can offer to God is to help convert souls.” –St. Rose of Lima
