Christmas Housekeeping There are two matters
I should be bringing to everybody’s attention before Christmas gets too near. The first concerns the obligation to participate in Mass. Every baptized Catholic who is at least seven and who is able to do so is under a serious obligation to gather with the congregation to celebrate the Eucharist every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation. The Fourth Sunday of Advent is a Sunday. Christmas is a Holy Day of Obligation. The fact that Christmas falls on a Monday this year does not mean that we are somehow freed of the obligation to participate in Mass on the preceding Sunday, and unless we think that God can’t count, we know better than to try to satisfy two obligations by participating in a single Mass.
The fact that the Fourth Sunday of Advent is also Christmas Eve means that we shall have lots of Masses that day—the three Sunday Masses in the morning, and our usual afternoon, evening, and night Masses for Christmas. It will be very difficult to predict how many people will participate in each of these Masses, and even more difficult to guess how many ministers will show up. For that reason, we shall not be having Communion Under Both Kinds at any of the Masses on December 24th or at the morning Mass on December 25th. We’ll return to our usual practice during Christmas week.
