Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. (John 15: 5) Jesus reminds us of the importance of staying close to him in this passage. Our life, our help and our hope come from this connec- tion. Without this strong bond to the Lord, we cannot bear abundant fruit in our life. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that the way in which we can be sure of the holiness of a person is through the fruit that they bear. He says, a good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a rotten tree bear good fruit. (Matt 7:18) An example of this good fruit is found in the first reading today. St. Paul is now connected to Christ because of his conversion that happened on the road to Damascus. However, the community is leery of him, they remember the evil he has done and they are afraid of him. He needs to prove himself and he does. The community slowly begins to accept him because they see that he means what he says. He is connected to Christ and he is connected to the Christian community. They begin to trust him be- cause they see his faith is real. A connection to Christ on the vine necessitates a connection to the Church. If we are truly spiritual and holy, it will reflect in the way we live as members of the Church. Pope Francis notes that the Church must reflect the very love and mercy of God: Consequently, wherever the Church is present, the mercy of the Father must be evi- dent. In our parishes, communities, associations and movements, in a word, wherever there are Christians, everyone should find an oasis of mercy. (Misericordiae Vultus, 12) God’s love and mercy are essential fruits that are produced from our life on the vine of Christ. We continue to celebrate First Communions this Sunday. As members of this parish, let’s do our best to reflect the life of Christ in the way we greet our guests and our members who are new to parish life. Communion is the greatest expression of our life on the vine. May our connection to Christ be evident in the way we greet the chil- dren receiving communion and their families who visit with us today. We can be an occasion of grace for these children and their families if we reflect Christ’s mercy and love today. Similarly, we can encounter God’s grace today when we celebrate joyfully the gift of new life that comes to us in Holy Communion. Father Mike

Life on the Vine

In our Gospel reading this Sunday, we hear Jesus tell us, I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. (John 15: 5) Jesus reminds us of the importance of staying close to him in this passage. Our life, our help and our hope come from this connec-tion. They begin to trust him be-cause they see his faith is real. A connection to Christ on the vine necessitates a connection to the Church. If we are truly spiritual and holy, it will reflect in the way we live as members of the Church.
