“When We Pray”

2

Peace , Fr. Walter

As we continue to deepen our spiritual lives, it might be useful to explore when we should pray. Why useful? Sometimes people limit their praying to when they are present in church, or when someone is sick, especially themselves, or when some other trouble happens. What is interesting here is that even if somebody prays at those particular moments, they are saying to themselves that they do realize that prayer is important. If on some level of their being this truth is believed, then why not pray at other times too? For example, why not pray over meals, and not just at home but even at a restaurant? By doing this I am reminding myself that God never ceases to nourish me. God is always nourishing me! Take one more step and perhaps I can use such a moment to remind myself that life is sacred. My life is sacred! Talk about an upgraded perception, considering all the other ways I might view life in this world, e.g., dangerous, boring, indifferently, judgmentally, and so on. Now, by praying over something as basic as at my meal; this moment I am transcending all of my other basic ways of perceiving the world, by now reminding myself that, besides all the other ways I might look on life, I must admit that I recognize that life is sacred, too. Presuming that I am firm in this level of awareness, why not experiment at actually recognizing the sacred in all aspects of my life. Personally I have developed a sacred habit of praying for anyone I read about in the paper, who has died, whether naturally, or because of a crime, or because of some disaster. I offer a prayer for them and for their families. In like fashion, it is a good idea to offer a silent prayer for coworkers when at my place of work. Silent prayer for any purpose or for anyone is in itself ideal, in fact. I may not be going through-out the world preaching the Gospel as it says in Scripture to do, but I am closer to that by bring-ing God’s Presence into all aspects of my life, starting by bringing God’s Presence into me! Of course, what I am really doing is reminding myself, by my prayer that God is indeed within me for God always-is-within-me, just as God is everywhere. This type of prayer is powerful. The Apostles only received Christ’s command to convert the world once they converted themselves, and transformed themselves inside out, as it were. People who met them were basically meeting Christ, in turn leading to their own conversion. If Christ is not in one’s own heart, manifesting in Christ-like behavior, why would anyone else be interested? But in fact other people during the time of the Apostles were interested! That says a great deal about the people who preached to them, not only in terms of what was being said, but most especially in terms of the speakers themselves. Remember, originally the Good News was delivered orally. It was not written down for some time yet. So the original message was what was said, as well as who was saying it. Ultimately, in developing the habit of praying always, we are in effect imitating Christ who lived al-ways in the Presence of His Father, and spoke only the Father’s Words. And since we are called to be other Christ’s in the world, it seems only natural that we too should live always in the Presence of God. After all, He is our Father too! Praying throughout our day is a good place to start. And being completely transformed is a good place to end, as it is where we learn what it means to be born again. Really born again!

“...I saw Our Lady visiting souls in Purgatory. The souls call her “The Star of the Sea.” She brings them refreshment. I wanted to talk with them some more, but my Guardian Angel beckoned me to leave. We went out of that prison of suffering. I heard an interi-or voice which said, “My Mercy does not want this, but justice demands it. Since that time, I am in clos-er communion with the suffering souls.” (Diary, 20)

The following is from one of our parishioners… “As a cancer survivor, I have attended Finding Strength and Hope Through the Way of the Cross: A Journey with Cancer. The stations were incredibly moving and allowed me to relate my journey with cancer to the journey Jesus had with the cross. Though I was the one diagnosed with cancer, my family, friends, and caregivers also connected with the stations.” Linda Bronsteader

“It has been our privilege to present these Stations of the Cross more than 20 times at churches throughout the Chicago and Joliet dioceses. I hope you will join us in prayer at Our Lady of Peace on November 14.” Alice Brown

HALLOWEEN EVENTS Halloween at Our Lady of Peace School is very eventful. The picture above shows the 8th graders doing their annual show for the parents. They later did a show for the students and staff. As you can tell, there was a jungle theme this year. Before the Halloween show, the entire school paraded through the gym in their Halloween out-fits for all of the parents and grandparents to see. Also, this week, we had the Halloween Raffle. Raffle tickets and treats have been sold before school and during lunch periods since October 24th and sales ended on Halloween Day. Again, the history behind the Halloween Raffle dates back many years. The 8th graders and their par-ents helped put together a fantastic raffle week. This year, many donations for the smaller raffle prizes came from all of the grade levels. This was a huge help to the success of the raffle. VETERAN’S DAY MASS Our Lady of Peace School honored veterans from our school, parish, and the community on Fri-day, November 3rd. Thank you to all veterans for all that you do or have done to protect us and our freedoms that we love.

Bear the yoke. Be a servant Count back 17 weeks. In Matthew 11 on the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus said, “my yoke is easy and my burden light.” This burden is the Covenant, the loving relationship of God and People. Jesus loves the Law and those who faithfully keep it. But he has no patience and no praise for those who go to extremes- the proud, the

pushy, the puffed up. He has no patience for the extreme of acting more for show than for goodness and right. He detests preaching goodness while not practicing it. ~Whose example will I follow? ~How will I lay to heart goodness and right

behavior? ~How can I be humble? How will I serve?

A farewell Mass in Bishop Siegel’s honor

will be held at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, Joliet, on

Sunday, November 26, at 11am. Refreshments will be served after

Mass and all are welcome.

Golden Hands Dinner My heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make this October Golden Hands dinner suc-cessful. A special thank you to OLOP and OLMC REO children - what a tremendous help, as well as OLOP school kids who volunteered. The seniors were extremely pleased with the attitude, helpfulness and how courteous all the children were. They are still talking about

them. The REO, school and parents should be very proud of their children - I know that I am. Thank you to all the volunteers and Knights of Columbus in setting up and taking down of tables and chairs. Without the help of everyone this event would not have happened. I was

told more than once on that Sunday that this was the best Golden Hands. God bless all of you. Dodie Przybycien
