PASTOR’S VIEWPOINT

There is something in the Lenten air that is quite life giving. I sense a genuine participation in the life of the parish on different levels and all at the same time. I might be spending more time, liturgical hours, than most of you just because I am a priest/ pastor, and this is a great gift to be grateful for. The celebrations of the daily Masses, the power of the Scrutinies aimed at those to be baptised and fully initiated into the Body of Christ at the coming Easter Vigil, the celebration of the sacrament of Reconciliation at the parish last Wednesday, the sick of the parish unable to be with us physically yet connected by prayer and memories. All this ‘religious’ blend does not interfere with keeping an eye on the Jets. The monastic tradition of ‘lection Divina’ has taken me to the slums of Argentina, learning about Bergoglio before was Francis, and learning about him and being reassured of how God likes to work in the lives of individuals. To admire the work of those priests, who work in mud and fight drug and their pushers, who celebrate Mass in multi purpose rooms and are threatened to be shot at any moment, yet at peace and dedicated to do God’s will as it reveals itself at the very moment of any day. Then with the regular parish business comes the phone call to help out at St. Basil’s Ukrainian parish. The priest invited to present a Lenten mission has the passing flu and cannot fulfill the obligation, can I help? It turned out to be another surprise gift in disguise. The meeting of new dedicated and religious Winnipeggers seeking God and His Will just as I have been doing all these years. Different Rite, same people, same God, same friendship, same daily quest of the living and loving God. As we enter Holy Week with palms and the passion story, we can never forget to keep our awareness on the daily life and ordinary persons on the journey of our common life. The water, the fire and light, the washing of the feet, the veneration of the Cross, the bread and wine of creation…all points to Christ risen in our hearts, in our relationships, travelling through mud and slush, the dry and the wet, the sun and the clouds of another day. The Day of Rest is every day. When Jesus invited the apostles to rest, the crowd was hungry, so they worked all day putting scraps together and all would be fed. No wonder He would say ‘the Father and I are one’ and my Father works always. He also said come to Me all you who labor…and you will find Rest. In other words, every game is a playoff game.

Holy Week

Holy week is the week which

precedes the great Feast of the

Resurrection on Easter Sunday: it

includes the last days of Lent and

the beginning of the Easter

Triduum. During Holy Week, the

Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation

accomplished by Christ in the last days of His life

on earth, beginning with His messianic entrance

into Jerusalem.

Good Friday – Live Streaming

A camera is being installed in the Sanctuary to allow live streaming of the Good Friday service via YouTube. This means that parishioners will be able to view and listen to the event live on the OLPH mobile TV units in the library. In fact, the event will be viewable on any device that can access YouTube. The recording will be deleted from YouTube as soon as possible after the event. Note: Testing of the concept will be done on one or more weekday Masses in advance. Please reach out to Rick Schwab at 204-896-6703 or [email protected] if you have any questions.

Development & Peace Development and Peace—Caritas Canada thanks you for your Share Lent donation. Thanks to your generosity, $5,762.00 was collected in our parish. This sum will help support the actions of our sisters and brothers in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Whatsoever you did to the least of these, You did to Me. Please consider becoming a Share Year Round member of Development and Peace. For more information, please visit the website: www.devp.org

Welcome Baby Bags Thank you to everyone who donated items and monetary gifts for the Welcome Baby Bags last year. We were able to put together 23 Welcome Baby bags for families which were delivered last June. The Christian Family Life committee is starting our Welcome Baby Bag campaign again for this year. The Welcome Baby Bags will be delivered to Thrive (formerly Pregnancy and Family Support Services). Thrive is an agency dedicated to offering services that support pregnant women, foster family life, empower individuals and grow community. The Welcome Baby bags contain receiving blankets, tightly knitted/crocheted or purchased baby hooded sweaters, sleepers, a baby blanket, wash cloths, bibs, onesies, baby toy/rattle, PBA free plastic baby bottles and a small gift for mother. These items can be placed in the marked bin downstairs at the church. Monetary donations to purchase needed items are also accepted and may be put in the collection basket in a separate envelope marked “Baby Bags”. Cheques can be made payable to the Catholic Women’s League. We welcome any donations you can provide. Your generosity is very much appreciated by the families who receive these gifts.
