FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT PAGE 2

PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

We begin a new Liturgical Year today. It is a time for a new beginning in all the areas of our life. Let us ask God to help us truly celebrate all the mysteries of

the life of Christ, open to all the graces coming to us. Advent calls us to cele-brate the coming of God to us. The Lord visits us, always, He wants to be one

with us now and forever.

“You must be prepared… for at an hour you do not expect… the Son of Man will come…” Matthew

We prepare ourselves for the visits of God by spending time in prayer and serv-ing our brothers and sisters. During the next two weekends, we will be doing

our in-pew call to support our Capital Campaign, Called to Renew. We will ask all to make a 5 year pledge to support the renewal of all our facilities, so our parish may continue to minister to all for many years. God give us a generous heart, as we prepare to celebrate the gift He has given us, the child Jesus, Our

Savior.

“Show us, Lord your love… and grant us your salvation…” Psalm 85

Children in sports are at risk for head injuries

Sports are a great way for children to burn off energy, learn about teamwork, and stay active and healthy. But some sports come with risks, including head injuries. Football is an especially high-risk sport for these types of injuries, given the nature of the game. If your child wants to play contact sports, make sure he or she does so safely. Provide proper safety equipment that fits. Check helmets and protective gear periodically to ensure that all are still working. Talk to coaches and referees about regular safe-ty checks for fields and team equipment as well.

For more information about “Sports and Head Injuries,” vis-it http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

Our parish and school have endowed us with

wonderful spiritual blessings. Many of us have received the sacraments of Bap sm, First Communion, and Confir-ma on. Others have exchanged wed-ding vows, and some have bid farewell to a loved one here in the comfort of our spiritual home. Our parish plays a vital role throughout our lives. Just as we now benefit from the generosity of those who came before us, we, too, are “called to renew” our Church to ensure future genera ons can encounter Christ and have a conducive place to worship and receive a Catholic educa on. Therefore, I am pleased to announce the par cipa on of our parish’s Called to Renew campaign and invite you to consider God’s many blessings in your life, our parish, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. I hope you will join me in suppor ng this historic campaign, and I thank you for your faithful support of our parish.

First Sunday of Advent

We are called to reflect the light of God’s love through the ways in which we live our lives. Imagine the impact if each of us took this call to heart, every day, at home, work, or school, in our parish, in the world. “All nations shall stream toward it,” toward the love that only comes from God. Yet, we must admit that much of the time we fail to be beacons of God’s light. We fall asleep, compla-cent, preferring to go the easy route, which often leads to darkness rather than the radiance of Christ’s light. As we begin the season of Advent, Saint Paul admonishes us to throw off the works of darkness, to awaken to the call of light and love. In today’s Gospel, Jesus too tells us to stay awake, to be prepared to greet the Lord of light as people of the light.

ICYMI Those who use social media or read news reports online are familiar with ICYMI, which is shorthand for “in case you missed it.” We might think of today’s readings as an “in case you missed it” announcement for these early days of Advent. We often think of Advent as the season that precedes Christmas, all about waiting and longing for the coming of the Christ child, which it is. Yet in the ear-ly weeks of Advent, we focus on the return of Christ at the end of time, and how we are called to be prepared for it. Most of us do not spend much time thinking about the end of time or the prospect of Christ’s return in glory. We may not want to admit to ourselves that our actions or attitudes are far from the ways in which we know we should conduct ourselves as Christian people. Or maybe we are uncomfortable with the whole idea of final judg-ment. It makes us squirm, so we adopt an attitude of “out of sight, out of mind,” and go about our daily lives with-out much thought or reflection on who we are called to be as disciples of our Lord.

HIT THE RESET BUTTON Advent is the beginning of a new liturgical year and can be a time for us to embrace the light of God’s love more deeply. If we realize that we are failing to live as we know we ought, let this season be a time to reset our com-mitment to living and growing as people of faith. While much of these next few weeks will be consumed by our preparations for Christmas, it is good for us to also take some time to take stock and commend our hearts and lives to Christ. Let us “stay awake” to Christ’s higher purposes, not out of a sense of dread or fear of judgment, but rather in anticipation of the advent, or coming, of our Lord Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Retirement Fund for Religious

Sunday, December 8, 2019

Today, hundreds of religious communities lack adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Most ministered in Catholic schools, hospitals, parishes, and social ser-vice agencies, usually for little or no pay. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious offers vital sup-port for necessities, such as medications and nursing care. Please be generous. Envelopes are at the door.
