- 2 - Our Lady of Victories, Harrington Park/River Vale N.J. What about a Holy Trip?

Discover a shrine or pilgrimage site of a saint. The family can divide the work of researching info about a saint or shrine, finding appropriate prayers and once ready - get on the road! North of here there is a great shrine, The National Shrine of the North American Martyrs, also dedicat-ed as the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs, in Auriesville, New York with a great history of saints. Montreal with great Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal which is connected to the life of one of the greatest saints and devotees to St. Joseph (St. André Bessette). Travelling towards Montreal St. Marguerite d’Youville Sanctuary (near Montreal in Varennes), St. Joseph’s shrine in Sterling NJ, Shrine of Mother Seton in Emmitsburg, or in NYC or in Baltimore. You can head towards Philadelphia with great saints of St. John Neuman, St. Rita, St. Katharine Drexel Tomb at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. There are several Marian shrines: National Basilica of the Immac-ulate Conception in Washington DC (it has many different chapels of Mary inside, and one great thing, beautiful Rosary mosaics with stories from the Old Testament that parallel the mysteries of the Holy Rosary - What a great way to (re)discover the Rosary and to fall in love with it, a great Marian Shrine of Our lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, PA or The National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel located in the mid-Hudson region of New York state, The National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, The shrine of St. Frances Cabrini, or Mother Seton in New York, shrines like St. Gerard Magellan in New-ark. You can also go to the Holy Face monastery on Route 3 or even to Newark Cathedral. The list could go on and on … there are not enough pages in the bulletin to cover the richness that we have with saints. So sorry for all those who laugh at us when we pray to saints. What would we do without all the saints. This kind of vacation idea could be a great source of fun to be together with unexpected adventures and also a great source of blessing for the entire family. Even those parishioners who cannot physically make a trip due to work or family illness can make a spiritual pilgrimage; for example, devote some days or some hours of your day to reading about a shrine of a saint and then praying to that saint.

But despite their differences of nature and moral gravity, contraception and abortion are often closely connected, as fruits of the same tree.

—Pope St. John Paul II from Evangelium Vitae

Fr. Wojciech’s Corner ...

I am writing from my home town - Tczew in Poland. First, greetings and thank you from my mom, she is so grateful for all your prayers. She is doing very well. We are now waiting for the letter for her to be able to apply for a tourist visa to come for my installation. Today is the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. I will participate with her in a special Mass in Mary's honor. It will take place at a Carmelite Monastery in a little town – Gorzedziej where the relics of my patron saint and the main patron of Poland St. Wojciech are kept. I will be able to pray for all of you there and your intentions. What a great help to travel to holy places and be inspired and encouraged by the witness of so many saints. This week we celebrate St. Anne, the mother of THE MOTHER, but also the grandparents of Jesus, Anne and Joachim. Greetings to all our grandparents (Ray Lawlor, Frances Semler … in their old age still full of sap - still green - so wonderful!). Faith in Russia survived thanks to the witness of grandparents. To all grandpas and grandmas, thank you! Last week I wrote to each of the Parish Council members thanking them for their great service and also letting them know that I will initiate a new Parish Council. So many of the former Parish Council members are heads of different parish societies, so I will continue to seek their great input and advice. The new parish council will be composed of members of our parish who are not heads of parish societies, but parish-ioners who love our parish and have a great vision for the future. To all those who will say yes, I already say thank you. This new parish council will be presented during my installation as Pastor on September 21, at 5:00PM Mass presided by Bishop John W. Flesey, to which you are all invited.

Feeding the Homeless As part of our parish commitment to the community and to serving those less fortunate, we will be preparing and serving a lunch meal on Saturday, August 3, at St. John’s Church Soup Kitchen in Newark. This service is sponsored by our Knights of Columbus council. All parish members (men, women and children) are welcome to participate, even if not a current member of the Knights. For more info, contact Bob Tringali 201-768-0648.

Drawing will be Sept. 1 at Maris Stella. Winner need not be present. Please make checks payable to Sisters of Charity.

Catholic Daughters Gladys Heyliger/Mary Carley Scholarship CDA Court 1639 is offering a $1000 scholarship to an 8th grade student entering a Catholic High School in September. For an application, please send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Dr. Marie Woke, 20 Kensington Court, Norwood, NJ 07648.

HOW SHOULD WE DRESS?? People generally have no real problem wearing proper clothing when entering places that demand such attire. Would you ever consider at-tending a formal dinner or a wedding dressed in a tee-shirt and shorts, or a tank top and swimming trunks? Why be rebellious in God’s house?“

CLOTHING BINS July is often remembered for its excessive heat, family picnics and time at the beach. We work very hard and deserve leisure time. Some people, due to the hardships of life, have difficulty enjoying recreation in any form. Catholic Charities reaches out to those who suffer. Please help us to continue our mission by contributing to the clothing bins.

[Fulton] Sheen understood that love does not work like mate-rial things—that is, if I have only ten dollars, and I give it to one person, I can’t give it to anyone else. Love is not subject to this restriction. When we love, it does not prevent us from loving anyone else to the same or even to a greater degree. —Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J. from Finding True Happiness

Pray for Those in the Military St. John Paul II on The Family “The child then must be understood as the maximum expression of the com-munion between man and woman, the reciprocal acceptance and donation that is realized and transcended in a "third," who is that child. The child is God's blessing. He transforms husband and wife into father and mother. Both "go out from themselves" and express themselves beyond themselves in a person, the very fruit of their love. In a special way the ideal expressed in Jesus' priestly prayer can be applied to the family. In this prayer he asks that his unity with the Father involve the disciples (cf. Jn 17:11) and those who believe in their word (cf. Jn 17:20-21). The Christian family, as "domestic Church", is called to real-ize this ideal of perfect communion in a special way.” -John Paul II, “Responsibility for the Promotion of the Family," December 1, 1999.

Still Valid Today - Humanae Vitae The sexual revolution currently raging in the Catholic Church began in the 1960s with a general misunderstanding that sexual acts deliberately closed to life could still somehow remain open to love. Pope St. John Paul II confirmed that frustrating the procreative aspect of sex simultaneously destroys the unitive aspect as well. The conjugal act is natural sexual intercourse between a married heterosex-ual couple that's open to life and love. It's open to procreation and, therefore, to charity. Charity is a divinely infused virtue given to those who obey God's commands, which enables them to love unselfishly. The conjugal act is more than mere sexual stimulation. It's called the marital act as it occurs only within marriage and is a natural act meaning it's open to procreation. Frustrated sexual acts, including contraception and sodomy, aren't procreative or unitive. They're acts of self-love. Saint Paul VI, in paragraph 12 of his 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae (HV), spoke of the "unitive significance and the procreative significance" that are "both inherent to the marriage act." He elaborated, "And if each of these essential qualities, the unitive and the procreative, is preserved, the use of marriage fully retains its sense of true mutual love and its ordination to the supreme responsibility of parenthood." Blocking the procreative or life-giving aspect of sex also blocks the unitive or love-giving aspect of sex as well. Many people wrongly thought they could express love within marriage by contracep-tive sex. This error spread from so-called "safe sex" within marriage to same-sex relationships outside of marriage. Pope John Paul II dispelled this error in his 1984 commentary on HV. In paragraph six he writes, "[T]he conjugal act ... artificially deprived of its procreative capacity, ceases also to be an act of love." The Catechism of the Catholic Church also equates the unitive aspect of the conjugal act with true love. Paragraph 2369 reads, "By safeguarding both these essential aspects, the unitive and the procreative, the conjugal act preserves in its fullness the sense of true mutual love." The Church teaches in canon 1061 in the Code of Canon Law that only a conjugal act consummates a marriage. She further elaborates that contracep-tive sex is not a conjugal or marital act and doesn't, therefore, consummate a marriage.

Mother Teresa said that, “in destroying the power of giving life, through contraception, a husband or wife…destroys the gift of love.” In Washington, DC in 1994 Mother Teresa said that we fight abortion by teach-ing the mother what love really means: "to be willing to give until it hurts … So, the mother who is thinking of abortion, should be helped to love, that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child." Gustave Thibon has said that the true God transforms violence into suffering, while the false god transforms suffering into violence. The woman tempted to have an abortion will transform her suffering into violence unless she allows love to transform her, and make her willing to give herself away. The Eucharist gives both the lesson and the power. Mom is to say "This is my body, my blood, my life, given up for you my child."

THE SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF LA LECHE The Virgin, Mother of the child Jesus, caring for His tender body and nourishing Him during His long months of human weakness, has inspired mothers and future mothers with the miracle of Bethlehem. The Catacombs in Rome during the second century display the Blessed Virgin Mary nourishing baby Jesus. The great museums of art in Europe contain paintings of Our Lady of the Milk and of the Good Delivery, eloquent proof of the devotion of women from all centuries to the nursing Mother of Baby Jesus. In Madrid, there is a statue of the Virgin, Our Lady of the Milk that had been rescued from sacrilegious hands; it was kept in the home of a pious marriage. When it seemed that most likely the mother and the unborn son would die, Our Lady of the Milk heard the desperate pleadings of the husband, and granted her a joyous delivery. Together, the couple spread the news of the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary before Our Lord to other families. Knowing of the intercession of Our Lady of the Milk, King Phillip III of Spain personally built a sanctuary in honor of her maternity. Little after, this devotion became one of the most popular in all of Spain. In the 1620’s the Spanish colonists, as a sign of their love for the nursing Mother of Jesus Christ, established the first sanctuary dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in what is today the United States. It was established in the same place where the first Mass had been celebrated years before, at the Mission ‘Name of God’, in St. Augustine, Florida. The rustic chapel and several others, built after were destroyed by the artillery in the first days of the colony, and later by hurricanes. The actual chapel was built in 1915, and there a replica of the rustic statue is exposed. The altar and the statue from the church of San Luis in Madrid were burnt on March 13, 1936 by the communists during the Spanish civil war. Thousands of Mothers go to the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Milk at St. Augustine to ask for the blessing of maternity, pleading Our Lady of the Milk for her intercession, in order that God may obtain for them a good delivery, as well as joyful and pious children. Several thousand write annually to the Priest director of the sanctuary asking that they be remembered in the Masses and prayers. Also thousands of letters are received testifying to the love of Our Lady of the Milk to her devoted and faithful children.

The Milk Grotto in Bethlehem: A short distance south of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is a shrine called the Milk Grotto, on a street of the same name. An irregular grotto hollowed out of soft white rock, the site is sacred to Christian and Muslim pilgrims alike. According to tradition the Holy Family stopped here during their flight to Egypt. While the Virgin Mary was nursing the baby Jesus, a drop of her milk fell to the ground and the stone on which it fell turned white. Today many women come here to ask for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin for a plentiful supply of milk for their children, as well as for fertility and other birth-related concerns. Scrapings from the white walls are mixed with milk. On the walls there are many pictures, letters and testimonies in thanksgiving for favors and healings granted at this special Grotto. (The powder is available only at the shrine; it may not be ordered from overseas.) Many group tours include this but some do not, which is a shame, since it is very close to Manger Square. If you are traveling with a group try to find out if it is included and if not, perhaps you can get the guide to take you there, since you will be right in that area sometime during any Holy Land tour. There is no official website for the Shrine.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF LA LECHE Beautiful Lady of the Milk, beloved mother of Baby Jesus and my mother, please hear my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows all of my desires, all of my needs. Only to you, Immaculate Virgin has your Divine Son made known the sentiments that fill my soul. Yours is the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Redeemer. Intercede now to Him, my beloved Mother, so that, according to His will, I can be mother of the children the Lord desires to send me. I ask this, O Lady of the Milk, in the name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen. O Lord Jesus Christ, through the intercession of Your gentle Mother, Our Lady of the Milk, who carried you close to her heart during the long months before your birth, I entrust myself into your hands. I implore you deliver me from useless and consuming worries. Accept the sacrifice of my ills and pains, which I join with your sufferings on the cross. Above all, merciful and loving Jesus, protect from all evil this child which you have given me, bestowing upon him the health and vigor that every child needs. Place in my heart and on my lips the prayers of your Mother and mine, our beautiful Lady of the Milk. All of this I ask with the intention that my child and myself can live to adore eternally Your Holy Name. Amen.

Soar Like an Eagle Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks? The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it. The eagle does not escape the storm. It simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm. When the storms of life come upon us, like the eagle, we can rise above them and ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness, tragedy, failure, and disappointment into our lives. What is your greatest challenge right now? Jot it down. And then let it lift you higher. Author Unknown
