History of The Statue Of the Infant Jesus Of Prague

THE STATUE REDISCOVERED

For seven years the Little Infant remained in the refuse, mutilated, unhonored and forgotten. As long as this state of affairs persisted, a peculiar misfortune seemed to rest on the monastery. Then in 1637, Father Cyril of the Mother of God (the former novice, Brother Cyril), was sent back to Prague. The devotion he had always practiced to the Divine Infant from the days of his novitiate in this monastery was undimmed. On his return from Munich, he searched every place in the house for the statue he loved. At last he discovered his long-lost treasure buried in a pile of rubbish. Filled with joy, he cleaned it as best he could, and obtained the Prior’s permission to put the little Child King back in His old position over the altar, even though it was battered. Father Cyril urged his fellow monks to join in rejoicing at the newly found treasure, and it was a common sight to find him kneeling in rapturous devotion in front of the image. The community renewed its devotion to the Divine Infant. They poured out their troubles before it, offered their fervent prayers, and soon received consolation and help. A new spirit of prayer and zeal pervaded the monastery, and material relief came abundantly and speedily.

From the Desk of Father Ed:

Dear Parishioners, This weekend we get a glimpse at the unfolding of God’s plan to save us. Before God sent the Archangel Gabriel to Mary to ask her to be the Mother of God he sent His Angel to Zechariah, the father of St. John the Baptist. The Angel told him that he was going to have a son even though his wife Elizabeth was barren and the both of them advanced in age. The Angel told Zechariah that John would be great in the sight of God and that he would lead many back to the Lord. The Angel also informed him that John would be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb. This weekend the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. Typically, the Church only celebrates the day that a saint dies and not the day of their birth. The only other time this occurs is the birthday of Mary, the Mother of God because Mary was born without Original Sin (the Immaculate Conception). It is worth exploring as to why the Church has chosen to celebrate the birthday of St. John the Baptist. The reason the Church does not celebrate a saint’s birthday is because their lives are a work in progress. They have to struggle their whole lives, like us, trying to avoid sin and doing good. They accomplish this by cooperating with God’s grace so that by the end of their lives they might achieve a heroic life of holiness and virtue and receive the reward of eternal life. In Luke’s Gospel, this weekend, the Angel of the Lord said that, “he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.” St. Augustine claimed that John was also born without Original Sin and therefore the Church fittingly celebrates his birthday along with the day of his martyrdom (This is a tradition of the Church and not a dogma or pronounced teaching). St. John the Baptist was given the unique role of preparing the way for the coming of our Lord. He lived out in the desert and preached a baptism of repentance. John was both a humble and powerful prophet. Jesus said that there is no man born of a woman greater than John the Baptist. John fearlessly lived out his calling as one of the greatest prophets. St. John the Baptist, the voice of the Lord crying out in the desert, referred to himself as the Best Man at a wedding. With great power, joy, and humility he was faithful to his mission. He died a prophet’s death as a martyr defending the truth about marriage. This weekend we reflect on God’s love for us and His plan to save us as we celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist who was born six months before Jesus. Let us pray for the grace so that we too can be powerful witnesses to the truth filled with joy and humility, and strive each day to become saints.

Kiosk Media Center at the rear of the Church

One of the audio CDs in our Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk is "Mary: the Indespensable Mother of God" by Tim Staples. In this CD, Tim explains the incredible impact that the Church’s understanding of Mary has on our spiritual lives, and the profound way that Marian doctrines and dogmas safeguard what we believe about her Son. Using penetrating insights and humor, Tim shows how correct knowledge of our humble Mother reveals our own identity in Christ, and empowers us to say “Yes” to God! As a bonus, this CD also includes excerpts from St. Joseph: The Patron of the Universal Church by Mark Miravalle. Each CD is just $4.
