First 1000 Days: A Catholic Culture of Life Initiative Sunday November 22, 2015
Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 252 Hunger and poverty also mean poor access to prenatal care, leading to high maternal mortality. Maternal mortality has a precise definition: the death of a woman while pregnant or within six weeks of the end of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the preg-nancy. Most maternal deaths can be prevented when births are attended by skilled health personnel who are regularly supervised and have
the proper equipment and supplies.

Social Justice Ministry Whether believers or not, we are agreed today that the earth is es-sentially a shared inheritance, whose fruits are meant to benefit
everyone. The principle of the subordination of private property to the universal destination of goods and thus the right of everyone to
their use, is a golden rule of social conduct and “the first principle of the whole ethical and social order.”

On Care For Our Common Home, Laudato Si’
Review of Chapter 2, The Gospel of Creation
This document is “addressed to all people of good will.” Genesis Chapter 1 tells of God’s loving creation of the earth out of chaos and God calls it “very good”. God creates humans as capable of self-knowledge and instill with “infinite dignity”, being “first conceived in the heart of God.” All creation is “willed, loved and necessary”. As humans we need to recognize our intertwined relationship with God, all people and the earth. St. Francis of Assisi modeled for us love of all creation which we have a duty to protect. “the gift of the earth with its fruits belongs to everyone.”#80
Action Items“The ultimate destiny of the universe is in the fullness of God, which has already been attained by the risen Christ.” “All creatures are moving forward with us and through us toward a common point of arrival which is God.” p.40Action: Meditate on the direction God is calling you.
“Nature is a constant source of wonder and awe. It is also a continuing revelation of the divine.” p. 41Action: Set aside time to experience the sacredness of nature. Listen to the message sent to you by “paradoxical and silent voice”.
“God has joined us so closely to the world around us that we can feel…the extinction of species as a painful disfigurement.” p. 43Action: Research a species on the brink of extinction or a forest or river on the verge of destruction. Pray for the Holy Spirit to bring wisdom to overcome the greed and change the course of this “rape of the earth”.
“We should be particularly indignant at the enormous inequalities in our midst, whereby we continue to tolerate some considering themselves more worthy than others. We fail to see that some are mired in desperate and degrading poverty, while others have not the faintest idea of what to do with all their possessions.”p.44Action: When you come in contact with a homeless person, remember their innate dignity and greet them with a smile and a friendly word.
A New Zealand bishop “thou shalt not kill” to the fact that “twenty percent of the world’s population consumes resources at a rate that robs the poor nations and future generations of what they need to survive.” p.46Action: Discuss with your family ways to reduce your consumption and be intentional about your purchasing habits.
