Why Rewards?Funny I was thinking as I sat down to write this that usually I would prefer to be writing a “letter to the editor” as opposed to a letter “ from the editor.” With an area as vibrant as Cy-Fair it is challenging to choose items on which to focus.
We hope you enjoy our feature article on our very own Danielle Bradbery. We had a great time visiting with Danielle at her homecoming at Community Of Faith in Hockley. This is not only a feel good story for all of us here in Cy-Fair but a incredible journey for Danielle that is obviously just beginning.
Our goal of connecting the community continues to grow. The total of non-profit groups in Cy-Fair can be viewed at www.cyfair.ourblok.com. There are now a total of 135 city wide. Businesses have agreed to buy into the concept and now all we need is you! By joining the program you can choose which charity you would like to help. Patrick. Upon having his photo taken with Danielle, Dan quipped, “This will be my most popular post on Facebook!” Adults, teens and children were captivated by Danielle’s performance.
Community of Faith member Robyn Despain brought her daughter Faith (8) to the event. Sitting on her mother’s shoulders in her pink cowboy hat and boots, Faith couldn’t quit smiling at the chance to see her idol in person. Megan (18), Ashley (17), Mikayla (17) and Maddie (15) brought visiting Australian Helen (15) to see Danielle. When asked why they were there, the girls replied, “She’s got a great voice and she is our age; we can relate to her. We really hope to meet her.” Their wishes came true back stage after the performance when they were allowed to get an autograph and have their photo taken with Danielle. When we caught up with the girls afterward, they were more than impressed with Danielle, “She’s so pretty! And so real. We are so glad we came!”
Leading up to the event, OurBlok took to Facebook to ask people what they would ask Danielle if they were given the chance:
When you were in LA, did you all stay together? Were you guys in a hotel or a house?
Yeah, we stayed all together in a hotel, the Marriott. So we were together all the time.
So you are in Nashville recording?
Yeah, I mean, I already went.

Hometown Girl Takes Center StageFor this young lady who turned seventeen in July, the last six months have been a whirlwind.
At just sixteen, Danielle Bradbery would become the youngest competitor in the history of The Voice and would go on to win it all. And win big!
The CyRanch student was known for her beautiful smile and for being painfully shy. Best friend Haley Haines tells OurBlok, “I had no idea she had a voice like that. One day I heard her singing and I asked her, “You can sing?!?” Danielle just said, “Yeah.” Haley goes on to tell us that she knew Danielle could make it big one day; IF she could get her to sing in front of others. “We would be with a group of our friends and I would ask Danielle to sing. She would just shy away. I always tried to get her to sing in front of people.”
All of that would change one Spring 2013 day when Danielle’s mother, Gloria Martinez told her they were going to Dallas to audition for The Voice. Scared, but a huge fan of The Voice, Danielle prayed for the courage to go through with it. And ‘go through with it’ she did. Danielle was consistently at the top of the iTunes chart (one voting method) and remained a front-runner in the competition from day one.
OurBlok was at Danielle’s Official Homecoming at the Community of Faith Church. The energy in the Fellowship Hall was electric. Over 200 people from across Houston gathered to watch Danielle sing “Jesus, Take the Wheel”, receive a “Key to the Community”

Are you going back out?
Um, probably, but I’m not sure exactly when.
The last few months you have been in LA. Did you homeschool?
I’ve been homeschooling (for kids who travel) l since I got out of regular school, it made it a lot easier with my schedule. So ever since then, I’ve been doing online school.
So you think you’ll be doing that in the fall or coming back to CyRanch?
That’s kind of up in the air right now. We’re not sure how things are gonna work, but we’re choosing whether to stay (with online school) or go back to regular school.
Are you being able to do anything fun right now or is it all work, work, work?
Well, right now I’m home; I’m getting every chance I can to hang out with my friends and be at home.
One of our Facebook fans wanted to know if you got to choose the wardrobe you wore on the show?
Well, I had clothes myself that I would bring to them and they would pick things from there every now and then. It was mostly theirs, they provided clothes.
It looks, even now, like you were able to incorporate your style.
Yeah, yeah.
Did your parents stay with you in LA?
My mom was with me wherever I went. I’m a minor, so she had to be with me everywhere.
One of the sweet little girls in the church named Faith wanted to know what your favorite song is?
Hmm… well, I don’t really have my favorite, but out of all the Carrie Underwood songs, I think I

would have to choose… <laughs>
What about whenever you’re feeling down? Is there something you like to put on to cheer you up?
I love Blake Shelton’s “Home”.
Now, you got to meet a bunch of people. Who have you not met that you want to?
My idol, Carrie Underwood <laughs>. I still haven’t gotten to meet her.
So if you had an opportunity to sing with her on stage?
Oh wait, if I had to? Oh yeah! I’d love to! <laughs>
If she said, “What song would you like to sing with me on stage?”
Um, I don’t know why, I love “Two Black Cadillacs”, so that would be kind of crazy and exciting performance to do.
You spent a lot of time with the Swon Brothers, your closest friends on the show, if they came to CyFair where would you take them?
I would probably take them to Shogun.
Do you think you would have won if you would have chosen Adam as your coach?
We will never know. I wasn’t really planning on winning or thinking about it. So it just came ‘like that’ <snaps> so I don’t know.
If you could pick a favorite charity, what type of charity would you be passionate about?
Soon, I’m going to the Children’s Hospital, so that would be it. I love little kids and that would be cool to go there.
We are very proud of this talented young lady from CyFair. What you see is what you get, folks. She is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. Adam Skinner had just turned twelve when he was tragically killed in a car accident on July 8, 1999. A clever boy, Adam was known for this common sense and generous spirit. Active in team sports, choir and the Boy Scouts of America, Adam left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.
Determined that Adam’s legacy live on, his parents Jeff and Jan Skinner, founded the Adam Jackson Skinner Memorial Scholarship shortly after his death. The Skinners wanted the scholarship to be given to a student who emulates some of Adam’s traits and interests; someone who is outgoing, optimistic and extremely energetic. One who possesses a team spirit and is active in choir, high school drama, debate or Boy Scouts of America.
Since that first year, the Adam Jackson Skinner Memorial Scholarship has grown through donations from friends and family on holidays and Adam’s birthday, and through corporate and private donations. In recent years, a large portion has been donated from the proceeds of the annual FORE Cy-Fair Houston Golf Tournament (see advertisement in this issue for information on the 2013 event).
The Skinners feel that Adam would be proud of the success of the scholarship. “This scholarship was such a perfect thing to do. It’s very rewarding to give a scholarship to a graduating high school senior boy from any of the CFISD high schools, to help him get to college!” says Jan Skinner.
In teaming up with the Cypress-Fairbanks Educational Foundation (CFEF), the Skinners are assured that the Adam Jackson Skinner Memorial Scholarship will continue to impact students for years to come.

When you walk through the door of the Tea For Two Tearoom & Gift Shop, it feels like you have stepped back to a time when the food was elegant and the service was welcoming. You are immediately greeted with the aroma of the scented candle burning at the entrance and a smile from the personable staff. As you look around, you will see friends lunching or mothers with their daughters; many of whom are wearing one of the hats and jewelry the Tearoom keeps on hand for their littlest patrons. Drinking pink lemonade from their own little tea pots, the smiles are indicative of the memories that are being made.
When owner Linda Becker sees this, she is reminded of the very reason she opened the Tearoom back in 1998. Wanting to create a memory for her own daughter, she traveled across Houston to a tearoom in Humble for her mother/daughter luncheon. At the time, Linda was working in Downtown Houston and dreamed of being able to be at home to see her children off to school

in the morning and to pick them up in the afternoons. At the luncheon, she decided to take her mother’s recipes and open the Tea For Two Tearoom near her home in Copperfield. At that time, the Tearoom was only open from 11am-2p m Monday thru Saturday. This allowed Linda the freedom to do what she loved and still be a present mother to her children. Her staff came on board for the same reasons; and many have stayed with her through the years.
In 2003, Linda opened her second location in Lakewood offering the same freshly made recipes for which the Two For Tea Tearoom had become known. Freshly baked desserts complimented the quiche, crepes, soups and sandwiches offered at the Tearoom. Right around 2010, Linda’s (now) college age daughter came home from school and convinced her mother to add a gift shop to the Tearooms. Here, Linda offers specialty
dips, coffees and teas alongside the Drake line of warmers, crosses and Circle E candles. The Tearoom also carries neat little trinkets and clothing from Mud Pies and tea sets for little girls.

Take Home Meals; freshly made dinners that are ready to heat and eat. They also expanded their hours to 11am-6pm Monday thru Friday and Saturday 11am-2pm to allow customers time to pick up the meals on their way home from work. The Tearoom also expanded their line of take home desserts. Baked daily in the Lakewood location, cakes, pies, cupcakes, petit fours, cake truffles and more are available daily.
Linda still spends her days in the kitchen at each restaurant and still feels that same reverie when she sees mothers and daughters sharing “tea” over their meal. While her business has expanded to include parties, dinners and catering, these luncheons mean the most to her and remind her of a special afternoon when she and her daughter made their own special memory.
