foR YoUR safetY & enJoYMentWe would like to highlight the following key safety initiatives that have been put in place so that everyone can have a seriously good and safe time!

1. the campsite opens at 12 noon on Thursday 7th July, and closes on Monday 11th July at 2pm. Car parks will be open from 10am on Thursday and close at 3pm on Monday. Between these times the campsite and car parks will be open 24 hours. The arena will be open from 2pm on Friday and 1.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Please pace yourself across the weekend and on Monday please take your time and care when leaving site – remember campsite/car park open until 3pm.

2. age limit - Oxegen is strictly 17s and over only - ID is required and will be checked rigorously before entry. Please note that under 17s must be accompanied by a guardian or relative over the age of 25 who will sign for and accept responsibility for said person. Under17s who do not comply with this will not be admitted and will not get a refund. Everyone will be expected to provide proof of age regardless of whether you’re blessed with youthful good looks or not; a Passport, Drivers Licence or Garda I.D is accepted. Garda I.D is necessary for over 18s to purchase alcohol. Maxi-mum of two pints purchased at any one time.

getting theRePlease do plan your journey in advance. We strongly recommend that you allow at least an extra 3 hours travel time to and from the venue.

Fans are once again reminded that public transport is by far the best way to travel to Oxegen.

1. it’s gReen! Travel by fans, crew and bands to and from Oxegen is the single biggest source of carbon emissions from the festival. So by choosing public transport, you’ll be doing your bit to help us reduce our carbon emissions further.

2. it’s fast! priority is given to buses both to and from the festival site (including dublin bus, bus eireann and Shuttle Buses to Park & Ride and Naas), so public transport is the way to beat the queues and your quickest way to travel to Punchestown.

3. it’s hassLe fRee! There’s no need to worry about purchasing a car park space, getting stuck in queues or finding a designated driver for the weekend.

4. it’s safeR! Oxegen discourages drink driving and by using public transport, festival goers can remove any doubt that they are able to drive home.

bY bUs Both dublin bus and bus eireann provide bus services to and from the festival, from Dublin to Punchestown. Private operators run services from around the country including Kellys Travel, Marathon Coaches and Coaches to Concerts. Check out our website for their details. Think ahead and book your bus travel now to help ensure speedier boarding for everyone.

On return, all bus services depart from the bus car park near the main entrance. Here, there is also a Transport Office to help with timetables and all other travel related queries.

Page 9: Oxegen Media Guide 2011

16 17

bY tRain Train services are also on offer to ensure festival goers get to and from Punchestown safely. The nearest train station is Sallins & Naas. If you arrive at Dublin mainline stations Heuston or Connolly take the Dublin Bus shuttle to Punchestown via Parnell Square West. Full rail details are available on www.irishrail.ie.

fRee paRk & Ride Our free park and ride initiative has proved hugely popular with fans over the last few years. Once again, the park and ride shuttle bus service will depart from Goffs, off junction 8 of the N7.

If you do not have a premium car park pass simply drive to, or get dropped off at, the Goffs Park and Ride site, and take the shuttle bus to Oxegen. There are no drop off and pick up facilities on the Oxegen site for private cars.

bY caR If you do decide to drive, we encourage you to car pool and fill your car with other friends who are travelling to Oxegen. as an incentive, we’re offering a free car park pass to anyone buying four weekend camping tickets.

Passes are limited and issued on a first come, first served basis. Campers camping in the Red Campsite should choose the Red Car park and those in the Blue Campsite should choose the Blue Car Park.

For those of you not already travelling in groups of four or more, Tripmi.ie provides an independent car pooling service. Simply join their dedicated Oxegen group and find other fans who are travelling to Oxegen from your area and who are interested in car pooling. For more info, visit www.tripmi.ie.

For those travelling by car, the car parks open at 12pm Thursday and close at 3pm on Monday and are open 24hours a day between these times.

Once purchased, a car parking ticket is valid for the full weekend. While exiting and re-entering the car park is permitted, it is discouraged and there is no guarantee that you will get back into the same car park on re-entry.

There will be at least a 90 minute delay exiting on site car parks at end of concert as Public Transport, Coaches and Park and Ride Shuttle Buses will be given priority.

gReen initiatiVes Thanks to the fantastic co-operation of its fans, Oxegen 2010 was the greenest ever, with its carbon footprint an impressive 15% lower than the 2009 festival!

The greatest carbon saving at Oxegen 2010 came through more fans than ever before choosing public transport. Once again we are urging all of you to leave the car at home and take one of the excellent public transport options available.

Again this year the Free Park and Ride will be running from Goffs (off Junction 8, N7) where you can get dropped off and take the short journey to the festival site via shuttle bus free of charge!

For full details on public transport options, see www.oxegen.ie.

bin yOur eMpties bin your empties are a group of artists, creatives, musicians, carpenters, sculptors, fun loving zany festival fans, eco warriors and counter culture cadets!

They’ll be onsite to encourage fans to take responsibility for their own waste at Oxegen. As well as handing out bin bags to help campers recycle, they’ll be manning ‘Bin Your Empty’ stations throughout the campsites. Fans can watch the bye team get all creative with their empty cans as they turn them into some amazing sculptures and other art!

At bye’s Green Theatre, you’ll also have the chance to see how the waste that is recovered is treated as it gets crushed and processed ready for reuse.

Geoff Fitzpatrick from bin your empties says:

“Bin Your Empties were amazed at the incredible buy into the recycling initiative last year, the Oxegen audience were so willing to recycle, with over 2,000 full bags being returned it was one of the best responses we have ever seen. This year our aim is to double that and enable the festival goers themselves remove 4,000 bags of waste from the campsites!”

extreMe green ZOne This year in an attempt to highlight the power of bin your empties the initiative is selecting a green ‘hot-spot’ located right in front of the bin your empties HQ in the Blue Campsite.

They have cordoned off a 200m square and are encouraging fans to keep this space an ‘Extreme Green Zone’. The intention is to encourage Oxegen goers to literally leave no trace - removing all waste and all camping gear so that all that remains is a green clean ‘snooker table patch’ which will leave an interesting green oasis for an ariel photo, demonstrating what can happen when people choose to do things a little differently!

caMping infoOpening at 12 noon on Thursday and closing at 2pm on Monday, the campsites are open 24 hours between times. This section details the range of camping options and facilities available on site over the weekend.

It is recommended that festival goers camp in the campsite that corresponds with their car park pass. The red campsite is more convenient for the red car park and the blue campsite is more convenient for the blue car park. As campsites start filling up, campers will be moved to the next available area.

Campers are not permitted to camp in the car park or in fire lanes; if they do this their belongings will be removed and while we try to take care of your belongings we will not be responsible for them.

iMpRoVeMents on site this YeaR Every year, we talk to fans directly to find out what they want to see at this year’s festival.

Among the improvements that we’ve implemented as a direct result of fan feedback for 2011 are:

• There will be an increased security and Gardai presence in the campsite with a greater number of foot patrols.

• Lots more seating areas around the campsite and in the main arena.

• We’ve reviewed our entrancing procedures to increase the number of lanes in operation at busy times. Queuing times were reduced last year and we’re looking to make it even slicker for 2011.

• Now we have an increased number of FREE mobile phone charging points around the site for 2011.

• An increased number of maps around the site to help you find your way around.

faciLities in the caMpsites free hot showers Get refreshed for the day ahead with the FREE hot showers provided in the Blue Campsite.

campsite bars Oxegen fans rejoice, this year’s festival sees the introduction of campsite bars. Buy your pre-chilled and competitively priced beverages onsite! The bars are situated close to the main entrance of both the Blue and Red campsites. The bars have been introduced as a direct result of feedback from fans.

Just like all the bars in the main arena at Oxegen, the new campsite bars will open their doors for business at 12 noon each day and cease trading at 10pm each night. You can purchase six packs or trays of Heineken, Coors, Fosters and Stonehouse Cider. All products will be pre-chilled.

And, if you purchase Heineken, you can store your beer in the Heineken Campsite Cold Rooms. You can drop your crate into a Cold Room at any time throughout the festival until 2AM, completely free of charge. Please note, you must be over 18 to purchase alcohol and ID will be required.

heineken cold Rooms The Heineken Cold Rooms return to Oxegen after a phenomenal ice cold can experience at the festival last year. They will be located at the entrance to each of the three campsites at Oxegen and free to use for all who arrive with cans of Heineken during the festival weekend.

90 minutes is all that is needed to chill cans to optimum temperature and cans can be collected any time between 12pm and 2am during the festival, ensuring cold cans for the duration of the fun filled weekend. To avoid the hassle of losing tokens, biometric fingerprint scans are used by festival goers to claim their chilled cans of Heineken. If you’ve purchased Heineken on site at the Campsite Bars you can also avail of this service to store it.

For full details of Cold Room locations and all the latest information on Oxegen visit www.heinekenmusic.ie.

pink pamper After the success of the Pink Pamper Salon at last year’s Oxegen it’s back again and comes to the Blue Campsite and for its first year to the Green Campsite. The staff at Mandika Salon in Naas will be glamming the hordes of festival punters at affordable prices throughout the weekend.

If you prefer to come and “do it yourself” straighten irons and hair dryers are available to rent for your convenience. They will provide hair & beauty treatments to ensure you are festival chic over the weekend. If you wish to add a bit of theatre to your look, you can choose from one of the numerous dramatic flash eyelashes available which includes free application or maybe some smoky eyes by the pamper team.

Page 13: Oxegen Media Guide 2011

24 25

The Pink Pamper will be situated beside the showers at the Blue Campsite and beside the showers at the Green Campsite.

Prices start from €10. The salon will be open on from Friday through to Sunday for all your pampering needs. This year no bookings will be taking, it will be a first come first serve basis.

big Yellow trucks big yellow trucks are here to help fans with those heavy treks to the campsite by providing sack trucks for hire in the red and blue car parks and the coach drop off point.

These trucks are specifically designed to carry heavy loads such as all your tents, bags and beer with the minimum of effort. The unique ‘P-Handle’ design even allows for one handed use, leaving you a free hand for whatever you may need it for!

oxegen & the coMMUnitYOxegen would not be possible without the on-going co-operation and support of the local community and various groups from the surrounding area play an invaluable role over the festival weekend. Naas and Ballymore GAA clubs provide stewards for local residences while local Scouts help campers set up their tents on arrival and also aid staff in the recycling of tents and the big clean-up operation at the end.

Throughout its history, Oxegen has, in return, supported the local Kildare economy, charities, sports clubs and societies.

Among the groups to receive a significant donation following last year’s festival were Nas Na Riogh Housing Association, Naas Care Of The Aged and St. Vincent de Paul. The activity around the festival contributes multi millions of euros to the local economy. This generates and sustains local employment with transport operators, accommodation providers, retailers, publicans, restaurants and public service sectors all benefiting.

Allan Shine, CEO of North Kildare Chamber comments: “ The Oxegen festival has become synonymous with Kildare and we are once again delighted to have the festival in Naas. It brings a much needed boost to the local economy, especially the Hospitality Sector. The festival continues to raise funds for local charities and the Chamber congratulates the festival organisers for their efforts. Having this festival in Kildare for 8 years is an excellent achievement and we look forward to another great weekend.”, Shine concluded.

Kildare’s music scene is particularly vibrant and each year Oxegen also gives local bands a chance to play the festival via Kildare County Council’s ‘Platform 5 Battle Of The Bands’ competition. This year’s winners are fox e. and the Good Hands and touchwood.

Annually MCD contributes €70,000 directly to local charities and organisations.

the stoRY so faRWith the unbeatable combination of an unrivalled line-up and an amazing atmosphere, Oxegen is widely regarded as one of the world’s top music festivals.

Oxegen debuted in 2004 and since then Punchestown (Naas, Co.Kildare) has hosted some of the world’s greatest acts and witnessed many unforgettable moments.

It’s a weekend dedicated to great entertainment, where festival-goers can experience everything from the high octane thrills of the festival funfairs to the communal silliness of The Silent Disco.

Over the last few years, we’ve placed the fans at the centre of the Oxegen experience. From choosing the artists they most want to see, to telling us the kind of improvements they want to see on site, our fans have without doubt helped make the festival what it is today.

2004 It all started here! The very first Oxegen came to Punchestown Racecourse in the summer of 2004. The Strokes, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, Muse, Snow Patrol and The Cure were just some of the bands that made our debut year unforgettable! 2004 also began a fine tradition of showcasing the hottest new bands with The Killers and Razorlight among those appearing on The New Bands Stage.

Oxegen 04’s debut was a resounding success and represented a high watermark in Irish festival history.

2005 A sold out crowd reveled in a sun soaked weekend packed with incredible music in 2005. Rock behemoths Green Day, Foo Fighters and Queens Of The Stone Age went down a storm while The Prodigy, Snoop Dogg and LCD Soundsystem underlined the festival’s unrivalled ability to satisfy all musical tastes.

Page 27: Oxegen Media Guide 2011

2006 Our generation witnessed The Who’s first Irish show in over three decades at Oxegen ‘06. Soul legend James Brown played what was to be his last ever performance at an Irish festival and Arctic Monkeys confirmed their reputation as the world’s hottest new band.

Fans welcomed the addition of more toilets and the introduction of hot showers – a first for any Irish festival and a big hit with campers.

2007 Voted one of NME’s top three festivals, Oxegen returned in 07 with a typically impressive line-up and a whole range of new attractions and facilities. Headliners Muse and The Killers delivered stunning shows and other bands to rock Punchestown included Snow Patrol, Scissor Sisters, Daft Punk, Arcade Fire and outstanding new talent in the shape of CSS, Gossip and Klaxons.

The Green Campsite also made its debut in 2007, with a host of luxury camping options available for the discerning camper.

2008 Oxegen 2008 won Best European Festival at The UK Festival Awards. Oxegen became a full on four day event this year - fans could begin their Oxegen experience earlier by camping on Thursday night with three days of music from Friday to Sunday.

Headliners this time out were Kings of Leon, REM and Rage Against the Machine. A new wave of talent graced Punchestown for the first time, including MGMT, Vampire Weekend and Black Kids.

2009 In 2009, the festival raised the bar yet again with a sensational line-up and some brilliant new features on site.

The big talking point in the run up was the hugely anticipated return of Blur. It’ll live long in the memory of anyone who was there, especially the incredible rendition of ‘Tender’ which provoked perhaps the biggest mass singalong ever seen at the festival!

Kings of Leon, The Killers and Snow Patrol also reaffirmed why they’re big favourites with Oxegen fans with equally breath-taking headline sets.

Once again, Oxegen 09 was voted by fans from across Europe as the Best Overseas Festival at the UK Festival Awards.

2010 Oxegen 2010 burst on to the festival scene with its most impressive line-up to date and was awarded Best Line-Up at The European Festival Awards.

Propaganda kicked off things on Thursday night with live DJ sets from the Blue Campsite ensuring that early fans were entertained from the moment they pitched their tents. The Live Stage also broadcast the World Cup Final on the biggest mobile screen in Europe.

Fancy Dress Friday got fans in the party mood and Arcade Fire rounded off the first day on the Main Stage in epic style.

Saturday saw three of the biggest names in music play Oxegen - Jay Z, The Black Eyed Peas and Muse.

Mumford & Sons rousing set packed out the Heineken Green Spheres tent and 30 Seconds to Mars made thirty fans’ dreams come true as they were invited on stage with the band mid-performance.

Eminem’s highly anticipated performance closed the Main Stage on the Sunday and was widely regarded as one of the finest headline sets ever seen at the festival.

Oxegen 2011 has a lot to live up to but we’re well up for the challenge...
