Wheat in Uzbekistan (2012)
• Area: 1.4 million ha• Production: 6.5 million t• Productivity: 4.7 t/ha
Source: FAO, 2013
CONSTRAINTS OF WHEAT PRODUCTION IN UZBEKISTAN
• Yellow Rust
• Leaf rust
• Terminal heat stress
• Salinity
• Low soil organic matter content
• Weed problem (costs causing less use of herbicides)
• Sun pest
WHEAT BREEDING OBJECTIVES
• High and stable grain yield• Good bread-making quality• Earliness• Plant height (90-100 cm) • Resistance to diseases • Winter hardiness• Drought resistance• Heat tolerance• Salt tolerance• Resistance to lodging

Uzbekistan hosted International Winter Wheat Travelling seminar (20 – 25 May 2013)
Around 50 scientists from 11 countries participated
Summary
• More than 100 new lines resistant to stripe rust were identified in international nurseries evaluated under severe epidemics (inoculated and natural) in Uzbekistan in 2013
• Ten stripe rust resistant lines, superior for grain yield, and with acceptable quality and agronomic traits are being evaluated in 2014
• One candidate cultivar was identified for submission to State Variety Test Commission in 2014
