1 www.performingartsV4.eu PROGRAM PACE.V4 Touring Conference - Transport and Infrastructure in V4 Performing Arts 4 th – 15 th June, 2016 Budapest (HU), Topoľčany (SK), Žilina (SK), Olomouc (CZ), Ostrava (CZ), Katowice (PL), Krakow (PL) The PACE.V4 touring conference– Transport and Infrastructure in V4 Performing Arts offers a non- traditional format of an international meeting from participants in Europe, Asia, the Visegrad Region and the Eastern Partnership countries, and the representatives of scenic arts in seven locations in Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland. The specific feature of the Visegrad region is blending of historical, political and cultural contexts as well as a dense network composed of traditional historical theatre architecture, cultural facilities inherited from the Communist period and new cultural centres founded after 1989. Theatre has always been an important initiator of social and political processes. People and creative achievements give the main source of energy, which fuels the vivid existence of the rich cultural heritage and infrastructure. Therefore the main goal of the conference is to meet and discover their work, conditions and contexts they work in. The conference offers a number of lectures and discussions, which are freely accessible for professionals and the general public (see the attached invitation and the programme below. The language of the conference is English. The acronym PACE.V4 (Performing Arts Central Europe – Visegrad Countries Focus) symbolizes the project of the long-term cooperation in the field of research and promotion of scenic arts from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland. The project PACE V4 Conference – Transport and Infrastructure in V4 Performing Arts is realized by the following institutions: Arts and Theatre Institute (Prague, coordinator), Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute (Warsaw), Theatre Institute (Bratislava), Hungarian Theatre Museum and Institute (Budapest). The conference is realized with the kind support of the International Visegrad Fund. Day ½ 1 / 04 June 15:00 Informal meet and greet at the lobby of Sissi hotel. Promenád by Stereo Akt STEREO Akt is a theatre production workshop based on the continous collaboration of Martin Boross director and Anikó Rácz producer. The essence of our performances is born in the - often silent - interaction of performers and viewers. The collective produces site specific projects and social actions. In the STEREO Akt performances the theatre is an event, the viewer is a participant, and the essence of the event is the encounter of the reality of the viewer and the imagination of the creator. GyulaKaboslive?WhathappenedtotheoldPioneerTheatre?SuchriddlesofHungariantheatrehistorywillbeansweredduringthewalk,givingtheparticipantsauniqueinsightintotheoldtheatrelifeofthecity.TheNationalTheatreThefirstpermanentvenueinBudapestfortheHungarianlanguagetheatrewasbuiltin1837whereAstoriaistoday.OriginallybuiltasPestiMagyarSzínház,itwasrenamedNationalTheatrein1840,andin1908relocatedtoanexistingtheatre(Népszínház)whichstoodatLujzaBlahaSquare,andwasbuiltbythefamousFellnerandHelmerduo.Bothbuildingswereconsequentlydemolished:thefirstonein1913,theNépszínházin1965.ThelocationofafinalhomeforthenewNationalTheatrehasbeenpursuedbyproponentsofHungarianculturewithgreatintensityafterthe1965demolition.ConstructionsofanewbuildingstartedatthedowntownErzsébetsquare,basedonthedesignsofFerencBán,butagovernmentchangestoppedtheconstructions.AcompletelydifferentprojectonadifferentsitewascommissionedbyarchitectMáriaSiklóswhohadearliermadethereconstructionofseveraltheatres(OperaHouse,Vígszínház,Thália,SzolnokSzigligetiTheatre).

Theplanofthebuilding,whichappearsfromadistancetoevoketheColosseum,wasnotmadeforthissite,butforanotherplotwhichturnedouttobeunsuitableforconstruction.However,timewaspressing,andthegovernmentchoseanareafarfromthecitycentre:thesouthernreachesoftheDanubeembankment.TheintentionofthegovernmentatthetimewasthatthisareaofBudapestshouldbecomeanewculturalhubforthecity.Theconstructionwascarriedoutinarecordtimeof15months,openingon15March2002withtheTragedyofManbyImreMadách.Theexternalfacadesboastacavalcadeofhistoriciststylisticelementsembroideredwithrichamountsofsculpturaladornment.Thisrichnessextendsintotheinteriordecorationofthebuildingalso.Thegardenandthestatueparkwerelaterattachedontotheareasurroundingthetheatre.Thetheatrehasaseatingcapacityof619,includingthegrandhallwithafixedprosceniumarchandablackboxstudio.Themainstagehasasurfaceof24x17.90m2and28m(external)height.A15x15mbackstageanda18x15sidestage(ontheleft)areadjacenttothemainstagewitha7mceilingheight.Thegroundareaofthebuildingwiththeopen-airstageis20,844m2.Thestageofthegrandtheatrewasredesignedatalaterphase–itreceivedcomputer-regulatedhydraulicelevatingstagemachinerycomprisingnumerousplatformelements.Thesquareinfrontofthemainentranceendsinaship,toweringaboveapoolofwater,inwhichthereisafragmentofastonefaçadewithatorch:theevocationofthedemolishedNationalTheatreonLujzaBlahaSquare.Onthelawnaroundtherearescatteredsculpturesofgreatactorsfromthesecondhalfofthe20thcentury.Sincethen,thePalaceofArts,acomplexculturalvenue,wasbuildadjacenttotheNationalTheatrein2005,basedontheplansofZoboki,DemeterandCo.Architects.Severallargeofficecomplexesarebeingcontinuouslybuilttowardsthecitycentre,projectswhichalsotrytosomewhatrethinkthepedestrianaccesstotheDanubebank.However,itisquestionableifthedesiredculturalquartierwhichthecityplannershaddreamtof,hasbeenrealizedintheareaalready.GyörgySchwajda,TamásJordán,RóbertAlföldiand,since2012,AttilaVidnyánszkyhavebeenthedirectorsoftheNationalTheatre,strongartisticleaderswhosedirectorshipsmarkederasofdifferentartistictendenciesanddifferentanswersontheroleofanationaltheatreinthe21stcentury.

KOMABázisinDistrict15SinceKOMAwasestablishedin2007,ourfocushasbeenmaximizingtheimpactoftheatreonsocialandindividuallife.In2011,wechoseoneoftheouterdistricts(the15thDistrict)ofBudapestasthecentreforouractivitiessowecouldimplementtheatricalmethodsandobservetheirlong-termimpactonaspecificcommunity.Atfirst,weworkedwithqualifiedactors;then,besidesourclassicaltheatricalactivities,welaunchedacommunitytheatreprojectwithfantasticresults.However,wehadtorealizethatneitherourfinancialnorourhumanresources

aresufficientformaintainingtwodivergentdirectionsofactivities.Therefore,inJanuary2014,wehavedecidedtocontinueasacommunitytheatre.Thelasttwoyearshaveexceededourexpectations.Localcommunitiesrespondedfavourablytothetheatricalmethods,andnewcommunitieshavebeenformed.NotonlyhastheBázis(the“Base”)becomeapartoflocalresidents'lifeasatheatricalcentre–withprogramsoftenorganizedbytheparticipantsthemselves–,but,besidesourunquestionablesocialandeducationalachievements,wemayalsohavehelpedthetraderecognizethatcommunitytheatreisindeed:theatre.Theseexperiencesguideusinproceedingwithourworkin2016andsettingevenmoreambitiousgoalsforourselves.In2016,aplethoraofcommunityeventstakeplaceintheBázisfivedaysaweek,generatedbytheyoungpeoplewhohavesetupbasethere.Participantsundergoradicalchanges:theybecomemoremotivated,conscious,andsociallymature.Weselectnewcontributorsforeachperformancetoensurethatthepositivetakeawayfindsitswaytothewidestpossiblecommunity.Ourprimarytargetgroupstillconsistsofyoungpeoplebetweentheagesof15and30.Theseyouthareopen-mindedandresponsive,buttheyarealsogoingthroughasensitivetransitionalperiod,whentheyneedguidanceandcoherentvalues.Ourgoalisnottobuildapermanenttheatregroupbuttosharetheexperienceofcommunitytheatrewithasmanyparticipantsaspossible.TheBáziscreatesspaceforhobbies,leisuretime,andsocialactivity.KOMALabinvolves14youngpeopleinaweeklyactivityofdramagroup.Itfocusesondevelopingindividualskills:articulatingthoughts,verbalexpression,focus,andcreativity.AtBázisFilmClubevents,moviesareprecededandfollowedbycommunitybuildingactivities,self-awarenesstraining,improvingindividualandgroupcommunication,andexpressingopinions.Zsendülés(“Burgeoning”)isanamalgamofartformsfrommovementtofineartwiththeaimofbringingparticipantsclosertothemselvesthroughtranquillity,creation,andmeditation.Ourstudygroupprovidestutoringbyvolunteerteachersforstudentswithlearningdifficultiesorpreparingthemforthehigherlevelsecondaryschoolexams.Wehavelaunchedanewgroupin2016foryouthwhoabandonedinstitutionalizededucationbetweentheagesof14and16,butnownewimpulsesfromtheBázismadethemrecognizethevalueinlearning,andtheywouldliketograduatefromsecondaryschoolattheageof20-22.Leisureactivities,suchasregulardartsandtabletenniscupsorpartiesarealsoanessentialpartofcommunitybuilding.Intheautumnof2016,weareplanningtolaunchaSOLE(Self-OrganizingLearningEnvironment)program,whichcouldtargetevenyounger(elementary-school)childrenbyteachingthemtousetheInternetwhileprovidingnon-formaleducation.Themotivationgeneratedbytheprogramcouldalsohelpchildrenmeettherequirementsoftheschoolsystem.In2015,weorganizedOPEN,thefirstHungariancommunitytheatrefestival.In2016,weareplanningtoholdthesecondOPENfestivalwithanevenwiderrangeofprograms.Besides,wehopetocontinuesharingourexperiencesandideas,andlaunchingincreasinglyambitiousprojects,suchasjointworkshops,camps,andotherprograms.InMay2016,wewillparticipateinthe3rdBürgerbühnentagung,oneofthemostprestigiousEuropeancommunitytheatreconferencesinKarlsruhe,inpreparationforthe2017festival.Meanwhile,weareintouchwiththecommunitytheatrefacultyoftheStaatsschauspielDresden,whichhasitsownannualrepertoireoffivecommunitytheatreperformances.Since2015,wehavebeencooperatingwiththeCzechNaCuckytheatregroupfromOlomouc:wedevelopedCitygame,apublicboardgame,andwehaveajointprojectintheCreativeEuropeprogrammewiththeparticipationofaDutchtheatregroup.StoryRoombyScallaboucheScallaboucheisauniqueEnglish-speakingtheatrecompanyinBudapestfoundedandmanagedbyAlexisLatham.ThecompanyhasagreedtoproduceaspecialversionofStoryRoom,oneoftheirmostsuccessfulimproshows,toreflectonthethemesofthePACE.V4travelconference.3

ofPeople’sPlayhouse(Népház-játékszín).In1994thetheatretookitspresentname,commemoratingthegreattragedienneMariJászaiin1994,whowasbornnearby,inthevillageofÁszár.ZoltánZubornyákandLászlóHarsányiSulyomwerefurtherleadersofthetheatre.Thebuildingenjoyedarefurbishmentbetween2007and2009,whereitreceivedarchitecturalenlargementsandmechanicaldevelopment.Duringthepastfewyearsover1200actorsplayedonthestageoftheJászaiMariTheatreandthelocalspectatorscouldseeover180ownproductions.Manycontemporaryplaywrightshadtheirsuccessfuldebutonthisstage,acclaimedbybothprofessionalsandthegeneralpublicalike.Thetheatrewishestoworkasaculturalestablishmentwhich,beyondqualityentertainment,alsoputsupthought-provoking,catharticperformanceswhichreflectonourcontemporaryissues.Bytakinguseoftheopportunitiesgivenbythedifferentplayingsites,thetheatremanagestopresentnotonlylarge-scaleproductionwhichappealtothelargermasses,butalsomoreexperimental,moreintimateperformances,orchildren’sshows,whicharestagedinthestudio.Therepertoryofthetheatrethuscomprises:classicaldrama,contemporaryHungariantragi-comedy,comedy,musical,Singspiel,operetta,fairy-taleplay,musicalpuppetshowandothergenres.TatabányaIndustrialSkanzen,theOpen-airMiningMuseumWiththevisittotheminingmuseum,whichisoperatedbytheCityMuseumofTatabánya,wewouldliketoencourageadialoguebetweentheroleofmuseumsandtheatres,asthemajorpublicinstitutionsofcultureandmemoryinacity,andthinkabouttheirdifferentaudiencesandspecialrolesinperformingaspeciallocalidentityofagiventown.TheIndustrialSkanzenofTatabánya,isauniquemuseumfurbishedonthesiteofaformermineshaft.Shaft15wasthelastworkingcoalminingsite,thebuildingsandyardofwhichhostthemuseumtoday.Awidevarietyofminingmachinerycanbeexploredhere,withanoptionaldescentintotheformershaft,seeingtheoriginaltowerwiththemachinehouse.Theoldofficeshostvariousexhibitions,ofminerals,fossils,butthemostexcitingofallismaybethereconstructedminedirector’soffice.IntheoldbathinghallanexhibitionofViktorLois’sindustrialmusicinstrumentscanbefound,titledSoundBath.Theworn-offmainbuildingisalsoquitesurreal,alsofullofcurious,industrialsound-makingmachinery,whichcanbebroughttolifebythevisitors.Ontheyardthereareseveralindustrialsteel-madestatuesondisplay,forinstancetheprototypeofthefamousTurulfalconstatue,whichhasbecomethesymbolofthetown.Themostpopularexhibitofthemuseumisacoupleofsix-apartmentminer’shouses,theso-calledsixdoorhouses,inwhichwecanpeekintothelivesoftheold-timeminersofdifferentsocialclassesfromtheearly1900to1960.Thereisashoemaker’sshopherewithmanyoldshoes,atrulyretrohairdresser’ssalon,aphotoshop,agrocerystoreetc.Inoneofthehousesyoucanseeaneducationhistoryexhibit,furbishedinthestyleofthe1920sand1930s,whiletheotherinthemuchbetterknownperiodfurnitureofthe1960s.Itisagreatexperiencetolookaroundinthemeticulouslyreconstructedclassrooms,tositinoneofthesmallbenches.Eventheall-too-familiarbluenylonschoolcoatsarehangingonthewalls.JurányiIncubatorHouseJurányiIncubatorHousewasopenedinautumnof2012.ThebuildingwasrenovatedbyFÜGEProductionsandtheleaderofFÜGEProductions,ViktóriaKulcsár.ThevenueislocatedontheBudaside,wheretheatrescanbehardlyfound.Thebuildingusedtobeaschoolanditisrentedfromthelocalgovernment.Onnearly6500m²,on5levelsmorethan11theatreanddancecompaniesandseveralotherorganizationshavefoundtheirhome.TheatrecompanieslikeViktorBodó’sSzputnyikShippingCompany,VilmosVajdai’sTÁPTheatre,GyörgyÁrvai’sCollectiveofNaturalArtDisaster,HoppArtCompany,Gólem,OpenCircleAssociation;ordancecompanieslikeTheSymptoms,DudaÉvaDanceCompany,ZéróBalett,KatlanGroupandWorkshopFoundationarerentingofficesand/orrehearsalspaces.Theseandothergroupscanshowtheirproductioninseveralpremises:inabigtheatrehallorinasmallerstudio.Thehouse

OlomoucislocatedintheheartoftheHanáregion.IthasbeenoneofthemostimportantCzechcitiesfromofold.PalackýUniversity,theoldestinMoraviaandsecondoldestintheCzechRepublic,wasfoundedin1573.Theuniversityplaysaveryimportantroleinthelifeofthetown:Withover25,200students,OlomouchasthehighestdensityofuniversitystudentsinCentralEurope.ItisacentreofBaroquearchitecture,musiclifeandaninspiringindependenttheatrescene.MoravianTheatreOlomoucOwingtothreecompaniesanditsownorchestra,thestageseesthedailyalternationofclassicandmodernballetperformances,operasoroperettas,musicalsanddramaincludingfairytalesforchildrenaudiences.TheMoravianTheatreinOlomouchasbeenthetheatrestagesince1920,whereitcontinuedinthe90-yearhistoryofKöniglichesstädtischesTheaterattheUpperSquare.DivadloTramtarieTheTramtarieTheatreisanindependentprofessionaltheatrethathasbeenservingthepublicsince2005andbynowhasbecomeanintegralpartoftheculturalenvironmentofOlomoucandthesurroundingregion.Itoffersafully-fledgedintimatesceneanddeliversaregulartheatreprogramme.3-5newproductionsareintroducedeveryseasonandre-ranregularly,contributingtothetotaloftentofifteenproductionspresentedinOlomouceverymonth.

OndřejSlachistheassistantprofessorattheDepartmentofHumanGeographyandRegionalDevelopmentattheUniversityofOstrava.Hespecializesineconomicgeographywiththeaccentonindustry,oldindustrialtownsandregions,creativebranchesandtheissuesconcerningthedevelopmentofinnercities.HeguaranteedtheupdateoftheconceptforthedevelopmentofcultureinOstrava.

AndrejHarmečkoAndrejgraduatedin2003fromatechnicaluniversityinthefieldofnuclearengineering.HeworkedinresearchforawhileuntilestablishingaShakespearefestivalin2008.In2011hefoundedthefirstindependentculturalcenterinOstrava.AtthemomentheisthedirectorofCooltourCulturalCentre,alsoamemberofartisticboardoftheEuropeanShakespeareFestivalsNetwork,memberofOraclenetworkofculturalmanagers,herepresentsCooltourinTransEuropeHallesNetworkandothernationalorinternationalorganizations.Hebelievesthatcultureisnotonlyartsbutawidespectrumofhumanactivitiesandrelations.
