Simryn Gill: My Own Private AngkorSpace B200Reception: Tuesday, March 18, 5:00-8:30PMOn view March 18 - May 1

designLAb is pleased to announce an exhibition featuring work by Simryn Gill. Following Gill’s inclusion in dOCUMENTA (13) and her solo exhibition representing Australia at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013, designLAb presents Gill’s monumental work My Own Private Angkor (2007-2009) – a series of ninety black and white silver gelatin prints – which will be installed in its entirety. This will be the first time the work has been exhibited in Los Angeles following her New York exhibition at Tracy Williams, Ltd. and its inclusion in the Istanbul Biennial in 2011. The exhibition will be on view from March 18 through May 1, 2014.

Simryn Gill’s My Own Private Angkor examines an abandoned Tudor-style housing development from the 1980’s in a small town in Malaysia. Gill has photographed this site in earlier works, Standing Still and Looking for Marcel, and returns again to this subject in this series with a focus on the buildings’ interior spaces shot in black and white film.

My Own Private Angkor captures the effects of changing fortunes and time’s passage on this place, which has been subject to encroachment of flora and fauna, and the ransacking of scrap metal. The photographs

record the unsettling beauty of loss and decay; they also record a modern formalism, evident in the geometric shapes of window panes left behind by thieves who removed the framing, in the repetitiveness of the interiors, and in the serial nature of the work itself.

Gill’s My Own Private Angkor was featerued in Afterall, Summer, 2013 by Anders Kreuger.

Hollywood in Post-War Italy celebrates American culture in Italy through an extraordinary exhibition of 100 rare, Italian-made posters of American films shown in Italy after WWII. Ranging from 1945-1969, the posters were printed in Italy and feature classic films such as Tea and Sympathy (Te’ e simpatia) with Debora Kerr, 1956; Butterfield 8, (Venere in visone) with Elizabeth Taylor, 1960; and The Fortune Cookie (Non per soldi… ma per denaro) with Jack Lemmon, 1966.

When I was a little boy, my mother said to me, “Piccolo Mario, what do you want to be when you grow up?” I shrugged, “I don’t know—I don’t want to play the violin like Poppa.” “Maybe you should be an actor because you like to be on the stage.” My brother said, “Well, maybe you should be a psychiatrist because you’re so crazy.” My father said, “Perhaps you should be a lawyer because you have such a big mouth.” So I combined all three in order to become an interior decorator—an actor to convince my clients that I like their existing furniture, a psychiatrist to figure out what they like and don’t like, and a lawyer to collect the bills! —Mario Buatta

Prince of Chintz Mario Buatta is at it again—this time with his very first monograph. Written by Buatta with Emily Evans Eerdmans, Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration is part autobiography, part design book, and part comedy—the latter being immediately ap-parent from the first paragraph of chapter one (see excerpt at left). Published by Rizzoli and expected to hit bookshelves and accessorize low tables beginning this fall, the book celebrates the internationally acclaimed designer’s impressive career, which dates back to the 1950s when he worked as an assistant in the decorating department at B. Altman & Co.

Buatta chronicles his well-designed life. He introduces himself as a boy who used to rearrange furniture in his family’s English Tudor-style home on Staten Island, NY, and takes us through his journey of becoming and remaining arguably one of the most respected members of the design community today. He shares anecdotes about his personal and professional life; insights into his creative process; the evolution of his signature English Country House style; never-before-seen photographs from his own archive; and images of his instantly recognizable design work, many of which have been featured in the pages of Architectural Digest and other respected shelter publications. He also gives readers a peek inside his extraordinary projects, including Blair House, the Presidential guest quarters in Washington, D.C., the homes of some of his high-profile clients—Barbara Walters and Mariah Carey, to name a few—and a multitude of other New York pied-à-terres.

“He is a legend. And for good reason,” Architectural Digest Editor Emeritus Paige Rense writes of Buatta in her foreward to the book. “For fifty-some years he has designed extraordinary, traditional interiors combin-ing fine design with shelter, comfort, and joy. His color palette cheers, delights, and offers emotional sustenance. It seems impossible to imagine being depressed in a Mario Buatta interior.” “Personally, he also cheers and delights,” she continues. “He is a practical joker. (Look out for gold-plated creepy-crawlies.)” Rense perfectly captures Buatta here—the man, the icon, and the jokester.

SHOWROOM NEWSMicucci, Suite B209MICUCCI ARTE, an intimate contemporary art gallery space dedicated for Italian artists, is pleased to be collaborating with VENINI and exhibit “Venetian Glass Design 1932-1947” by Carlo Scarpa.

The exhibition showcases Carlo Scarpa’s glass pieces still in production and highlights the techniques developed by him. Scarpa was the Artistic Director of VENINI from 1932-1947 and was intimately involved with produc-tion techniques and spent many hours with the master blowers to develop new surface textures, new techniques and colorings. Through the exceptional craftsmanship of the master blowers, he designed and recognized hundreds of significant works in unique and groundbreaking styles.

Throughout his 15-year period directorship, the experiments Scarpa undertook at VENINI radically redefined the possibilities of glass-blowing. All the methods and techniques he developed remind us how motivated he was to research the detailing for interior design elements, just as he was for his breathtaking architectural projects.

MICUCCI ARTE is honored to present 32 sculptural pieces designed by Scarpa and cordially invites you for a private viewing of the solo exhibition.

David Sutherland Showroom, Suite B182Inspired from vineyards around the world, Perennials introduces Uncorked - a fresh collection of 92 skus that add eight free-flowing designs and 20 new colorways to Perennials growing collections. With reversible woven jacquards, linen textures, chenilles and velvets in serene new colorways, Uncorked taps into the casual wine country experience. Also new from Perennials are expanded outdoor trims in dozens of colors and styles, from borders to baubles to tassel tiebacks and high-performance cording.

Holly Hunt, Suite B377A harken back to historical Japanese architecture, the Laredo Cocktail Table suspends a wide, cast glass top above an artistically carved base, creating an intentional airiness and focus on the design. The pieces together are a mix of masculine proportions and rustic finishes, but the lines are precise, and by creating intentional voids in which to view the open space, the table appears lighter in stature.
