continued - Why Do We Complicate Things?

Most important points from last week: “core values don’t change. Critical success factors change from time to time as our strategic objectives change.” Leaders, visionaries, and geniuses usually have a very clear sense of pur-pose, and they draw their direction from their purpose. They don’t allow their tempers and appetites and impulses to blow them off course or to direct their daily affairs. They allow a deep sense of purpose and conviction to guide their actions and passions. They know what factors are most likely to guarantee their success, and they focus on those factors. I remember the first time I heard the story about Jesus going into a village and healing all the people who were sick and hurting. The next morning, he woke before dawn and went alone to a quiet place to pray and regain his strength. Later Peter came running to him and said, “Everyone in the village is looking for you.” Most people would go down into the village square, allowing themselves to be showered with gifts and praise, basking in the their glory. Most people would be shaking hands, kissing babies, and signing autographs. But not Jesus. He had a very clear sense of who he was and the mission before him. So he told Peter and the others, “Let us go to the other villages, so that I may speak there also. It is for this that I have come.” Now, that is a statement of purpose and clarity. Get clear about who you are and who your are not, about what you do and what you don’t do. The sooner you get clear on these things the sooner your life will begin to simplify and flourish because of the clarity that simplicity will bring. We complicate our lives because we don’t have a clear sense of what our core values and strategic anchors are. (A strategic anchor is something that you determine is critical for your success, some-thing you want to be true about you.) Another reason we complicate our lives is that we are scared of missing out on something. We complicate our lives with clutter, congestion and confusion so that we don’t face the question “What am I here for?”. It is a difficult question, not one we can settle in an afternoon sitting around with some trusted friends. It takes time and a variety of experiences, and it requires that we listen vigilantly to our inner voice. It is that inner voice of conscience that tells us who we are in GOD’S eyes. We complicate our lives to avoid the real challenges of our inner life. We need to take the time of get clear about these things - purpose, identity, desires, values- so that we can see with great clarity what matters most in our everyday lives. Clarity and simplicity are best friends.

Catholic Social Teaching

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Gospel continues the lesson from last Sunday. Comfort and wealth made the rich man blind to poor Lazarus lying on his doorstep and also blind to he own need for God. Before God we are all as poor and needy as Lazarus. Since God has given us love, grace and mercy so freely are we not called to give to the materially poor the material gifts God has given us? 26to Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario El Evangelio de hoy continúa la lección del domingo pasado.
